Manchester United keep WSL title bid on track with late win at Aston Villa

    [ad_1]

In the best traditions of Fergie-time, substitute Millie Turner headed home the latest possible winning goal to help Manchester United stretch their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League to six points.

The centre-back converted Katie Zelem’s much-disputed free-kick three minutes into added time to keep United’s dreams of a league and FA Cup double alive.

Marc Skinner had reckoned it was good to play ahead of title rivals – on the proviso United won. With Manchester City playing Leicester on Sunday and the Champions League semi-finalists, Chelsea and Arsenal, not in WSL action this weekend, this was United’s opportunity to put down their marker.

They may have played one more game than City – and three more than Chelsea, whom they lead by seven points – but the nature of this United comeback could yet power them to their first top-flight title.

Rachel Daly twice gave Villa the lead with superb finishes in the first half, against the meanest defence in the division, yet it was the shot she crashed against the crossbar at 2-1 early in the second half that will stick in the England player’s craw.

Skinner, the United manager, admitted Villa were the better side, especially in the first half, but invoked the club’s traditions under Sir Alex Ferguson in being able to win right at the death.

“It reinforces that we can do that,” he said. “It reinforces that the great Manchester United men’s teams never gave up until way into … well, it’s called ‘Fergie time’ for a reason, right? For me it shows much more about our mentality and it’s a massive sign of what we can achieve.”

Villa dominated United, especially with crosses into the box in the first half, with Lucy Staniforth particularly productive. Up against her former club, the midfielder’s corner invited Daly to time her run superbly and flash her header into the far corner. It was an outstanding, old-fashioned type of centre-forward’s goal.

Leah Galton equalised after Ona Batlle accelerated down the right flank to deliver such a fine low cross that the winger did not have to break stride to sidefoot in her ninth goal of the season.

United’s kept trying to play out from the back but Villa never gave them time, and Skinner admitted they should have played over the press more. “They were all over us, first half,” he said.

This was a cracking game, the tempo unrelenting. Anna Patten, the Villa centre-back, headed another Staniforth corner against the crossbar and United looked set to lose for only a second time in 19 games.

Yet at the other end, Hannah Hampton made a great reaction save from Galton and, just before half-time, Hayley Ladd was unfortunate to have a goal chalked off after Hampton, running into Galton, was adjudged to have been fouled.

By that stage Daly had moved level top of the WSL scorers with Bunny Shaw on 18. Maz Pacheco crossed low from the left and Daly was allowed enough time to sidefoot an expert low shot into the far corner with her left foot.

She so nearly completed her hat-trick on the hour. After a period of sustained United pressure, Villa counterattacked in devastating fashion. Nobbs played a reverse pass for Kenza Dali to cross for Daly to shoot against the bar.

How United made them pay. Within two minutes, Hannah Blundell crossed from the left wing and Nikita Parris, left unmarked, headed home the equaliser. With Russo heading over and United using all five substitutes, it seemed like their pressure was not going to pay. But then up stepped Turner.

It was a debatable decision for Maz Pacheco’s foul on Vilde Boe Risa. “It’s a tough one to take,” Villa manager, Carla Ward, said. “The lineswoman’s a yard away and there’s 20 seconds left and she says it’s no foul. The ref’s 30 yards away and says it’s a foul. We’ve had some big calls go against us. Something’s got to change. But my players have been absolutely outstanding.”

  • Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

    [ad_1]

After eight years, 85 Tests, 76 wins and 3,411 points scored, England’s head coach Simon Middleton takes charge of his final match on Saturday. It should be quite a finale, with a world-record crowd for a women’s game in excess of 53,000 expected at Twickenham as the Red Roses go head-to-head with France in a winner-takes-all Six Nations decider.

The record currently stands at 42,579, set at the World Cup final at Eden Park in November. The attendance is also sure to smash the current Women’s Six Nations record, set last weekend with 18,604 watching France v Wales at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.

To more than double the record shows the progress not only the tournament is making, but the entire sport. The Twickenham crowd figure will hopefully act as a springboard for more avenues of progress and it will be a boost to the hopes of the Rugby Football Union who want to sell out Twickenham for the World Cup final in 2025.

Middleton – for whom a 53,000 attendance must have seemed unimaginable when he took the job in 2015 – has said the number of tickets sold has exceeded expectation and England’s vice-captain Zoe Aldcroft told the Guardian: “It shows how much the game has come on, to have a standalone match at Twickenham. For them to think we would sell that amount of tickets, even though we have gone over the amount they thought they would sell, it’s just amazing.

“I think my heart is going to be absolutely pumping. It is the adrenaline it will bring and obviously most of the crowd will be behind England so I think that is something we really have to take confidence in and put on a good performance because that is what they are coming to see. We want to make it a good event so it can happen again and again in the future.”

The crowd will be treated to a tight match if recent history is anything to go by. England came out 13-7 winners the last time the teams met in October at the World Cup and the Red Roses defeated France 24-12 in last year’s Six Nations. England have generally had the upper hand of late, however – the last time France beat their old rivals was in the 2018 Women’s Six Nations, coming out 18-17 winners, and the loss was the last time England were defeated in the competition. The Red Roses have been on a 23-match Six Nations winning run since. England have also been handed a boost ahead of the match with their captain Marlie Packer, the prop Hannah Botterman and No 8 Poppy Cleall ruled fit.

And while England will be favourites to win their fifth successive Women’s Six Nations, France could upset the Twickenham party. England’s biggest weakness, arguably, is their handling. They have made 69 handling errors in the 2023 tournament so far and they were exploited against Wales. The Red Roses’ mistakes in the first half saw Wales score points first and they held England from scoring until the 26th minute.

France could exploit the same weakness this weekend and if effective, England may not be able to rely on a rolling maul or an Abby Dow wonder try with France’s defence impressive in the tournament thus far. Les Bleues have conceded 29 points with only England conceding fewer. France will also have extra motivation to get the trophy win with one of their stalwarts retiring – the fly-half Jessy Trémoulière starts at 10 for her last ever match. The 30-year-old has won two Six Nations titles, finished third in three World Cups and was named Women’s 15s player of the decade by World Rugby in 2020.

England’s attack coach, Scott Bemand, is also leaving his role after the tournament alongside Middleton, for whom victory would mean a sixth Women’s Six Nations title. Middleton was the assistant coach when England won the 2014 World Cup and took over from Gary Street as head coach the following year. While Middleton did not manage to get his hands on the World Cup as head coach, losing in the 2017 and 2022 finals to New Zealand, he has overseen huge changes to the women’s game during his tenure.

    skip past newsletter promotion

In 2019, the Rugby Football Union introduced professional contracts for the first time which Middleton called a “massive opportunity” when they were awarded. Since professionalism was introduced to the team they have won every Six Nations, Middleton became the first women’s coach to be named World Rugby Coach of the Year and England set a new world record after going 30 games unbeaten.

Aldcroft spoke on the impact Middleton has had, not only on England but on the game more widely. “For us, for England, Midds has been absolutely huge,” the Gloucester-Hartpury player said. “The standards that he sets for the team and the drive that he gives us is unbelievable. It can only be from him how much we have achieved over the last few years. So he has been amazing for England rugby and women’s rugby in general.”

Middleton told BBC Sport this week: “There was always going to be an evolution process but hopefully I’ve been able to accelerate it. I’ve been clear on what I want for the squad and that is to try and get the very best support around them. Where the game is now is massively important to me and I’m very proud of the fact that we’re so in the public domain now, everyone wants to cover us and come and see us.”

Pep Guardiola admits Manchester City will be scared before Arsenal title clash

    [ad_1]

Pep Guardiola has admitted he and his players will be scared before Manchester City’s title showdown with Arsenal on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola is vastly experienced and one of the most decorated managers in history, with 30 major trophies, but says he will still feel anxious before facing the leaders.

“I manage well but it is a good sign, being a little bit nervous,” he said. “So the people in society, the teenagers, all of them are psychologists for mental health because they don’t accept that being nervous is part of our lives, being anxious is part of our lives, being scared is part of our lives, and nothing happens. We don’t have to be perfect. When we educate our kids, they have to be perfect for Instagram and TikTok and this kind of thing – they have to be a genius.”

Guardiola relishes the apprehension that characterises his match buildup. “When I feel that feeling I know it’s normal,” he said. “The problem would be if I didn’t have that feeling. I like to live this kind of adrenaline … but in the end I sleep quite well. That is not a problem.”

His team will also be nervous. The manager said: “They have experience, too. Everyone has to find his own meditation to prepare himself for what they need, either with music or whatever they need to prepare for the game. But the team is ready for a big battle – I know how difficult it will be.”

Arsenal have taken only three points from the previous possible nine, reducing their advantage to five points. City, who have two matches in hand, will retain the Premier League title if they win their remaining eight games. They are unbeaten in 16 matches but Guardiola insisted he would prefer Arsenal to be in better form.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“After three games dropping points it will be much, much more difficult,” he said. “I would have preferred it if they had come here with better results than the last three.”

City knocked Bayern Munich out of the Champions League 4-1 on aggregate last week but Guardiola thinks they will have to be better to defeat first Arsenal and then their semi-final opponents, Real Madrid.

“I don’t know if the [performance in the] games against Bayern will be enough to win tomorrow or to get to the final of the Champions League,” the manager said. “In some departments, we have to improve.”

Nathan Aké is ruled out with a hamstring injury so Aymeric Laporte may replace him at left-back.

Education Department unveils Title IX transgender sports eligibility rule

    [ad_1]

    transgender athletes 81774

When asked about how the rule would interact with state laws, a senior administration official said “the federal civil rights law is the law of the land.” Schools that choose to enforce categorical bans on transgender students from playing sports would risk losing federal funds.

“Every student should be able to have the full experience of attending school in America, including participating in athletics, free from discrimination,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “Being on a sports team is an important part of the school experience for students of all ages.”

The administration’s rule also comes as House Republicans are expected to imminently bring their restrictive transgender sports bill — H.R. 734 (118) — to the floor for a vote. Dozens of women’s rights and gender justice advocates have been urging the Biden administration to quickly release the rule to combat this legislation and an onslaught of legislation in the states. But they wanted the White House to ensure all transgender students can fully participate in sports.

While the proposal is billed as a compromise, the rule may not go far enough for advocates on behalf of transgender students nor those who say allowing transgender students to play on sports teams compromises competition in women’s sports. The Education Department said the proposal takes into consideration “the importance of minimizing harms to students whose participation on teams consistent with their gender identity would be limited or denied.”

But the rule includes flexibility for schools to develop team eligibility criteria so long as it does not impose sweeping bans or is premised on the “disapproval of transgender students or a desire to harm a particular student.” A school must be able to show that its eligibility requirements “serve important educational objectives, such as ensuring fairness in competition or preventing sports-related injury.”

Additionally, the department acknowledged sports governing bodies vary in their participation criteria, and that school athletic teams vary in their level of competition and that there are differences when it comes to grade level.

The Education Department emphasized that under its proposed rule, “elementary school students would generally be able to participate on school sports teams consistent with their gender identity where considerations may be different for competitive high school and college teams.”

The department said the rule, which was promised last June, was created with input received during its public hearing, during which the Office for Civil Rights received more than 280 live comments and roughly 30,000 written comments.

The agency proposed Title IX regulation will be open for public comment for 30 days from the date of publication in the Federal Register. The department also said it is expecting to publish its final Title IX rule on addressing sexual misconduct in May.

Sensing trouble, the government has launched an awareness campaign to motivate people to follow Covid Appropriate Behavior (CAB).

“Infections are quite common. It is because of various circulating viruses. These include Influenza A, Influenza B, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus). People should avoid gatherings. They should also follow CAB,” said Professor Muhammad Salim Khan, head, Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Srinagar.

Dr. Khan said people should preferably wear masks in crowded settings. “Symptoms are mild. There is no need to panic. But one needs to be alert. Wearing masks is advisable. People going outdoors or in crowded places should wear masks. People also need to follow hand hygiene and cough etiquette,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir government has gone into overdrive and decided to ramp up testing. Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) wrote to Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) to increase COVID-19 testing.

“In continuation to the letter regarding COVID-19 testing, it has been observed that there is no increase in the COVID-19 testing rate. Furthermore, there hasn’t been any increase in the proportion of testing of RT-PCR which should be the benchmark of a minimum 80 percent of total COVID-19 testing. You are directed to increase the rate of COVID-19 testing, the proportion of RT-PCR testing and ensure the establishment of flu clinics at all the health institutions as per the guidelines issued by MoHFW,” the letter said.

DHSK has also directed officers to carry out an awareness campaign so that people follow CAB. “We have to follow CAB. We have been issuing appeals from time to time. The campaign is going on social media. Director Health came on the air. CMOs and DHOs are appealing to people through various mediums that they need to follow protocols,” said Dr. Mir Mushtaq, spokesman of DHSK.

Officials said there have been no hospitalizations so far in Kashmir. The government said they have enough beds available to meet any exigency.

“We have no hospitalizations so far. We have adequate facilities available. Even in the peak of Covid, we did not have any bed shortage. We are self-sufficient. We are on alert. There is nothing to panic about,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Nasir-ul Islam Saturday said that Rs 65 have been fixed as the Sadaqa-Al-Fitr per person this Ramdhan while as there is no harm in paying more depending upon the financial capacity of the person.

Will Markram be able guide SRH to a second IPL title?

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad would be banking on the leadership skills of their new skipper, South African Aiden Markram, and the cricketing acumen of coach Brian Lara to break the jinx of finishing in the lower rung over the last couple of editions, when the latest IPL season commences on March 31.

Markram, who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 title, is the third captaincy change in three years for the Hyderabad franchise, and will have a big job at hand to guide the side to success after it finished last in 2021 and eighth among 10 teams last year.

Having won the title in 2016, SRH’s biggest issue has been their captaincy, with Australian opener David Warner and charismatic New Zealand batter Kane Williamson having to pay the price for the team’s debacle in the last two editions.
