IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals overcome Hardik fifty, Shami four-fer to beat Gujarat Titans by 5 runs

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Delhi Capitals overcame Hardik Pandya’s fighting unbeaten fifty (59 not out) and Mohammed Shami’s four-fer (4-11) to beat Gujarat Titans by five runs in Match No. 44 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Tuesday.

Despite the win, Delhi Capitals stayed at the bottom of the points table but they have kept themselves alive in the tournament with three victories in nine matches. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans, who have six wins in nine matches, are at the top of the points table despite the loss.

Seasoned pacer Shami’s sensational four-fer helped Gujarat Titans restrict Delhi Capitals to 130/8 in 20 overs despite a fighting fifty from Aman Hakim Khan (51 off 44). Apart from Shami, Mohit Sharma (2-33) and Rashid Khan (1-28) were the other wicket-takers for Titans while Axar Patel (27 off 30) and Ripal Patel (23 off 13) were the other main contributors with the bat after Aman.

    MS Education Academy

Chasing a low total, Delhi Capitals also had a poor start as they lost three wickets inside the Power-play and scored just 31 runs. It was Khaleel Ahmed, who drew the first blood for Delhi Capitals by getting Wriddhiman Saha caught behind for a duck in the last delivery of the very first over of the innings.

Skipper Hardik Pandya walked into the middle to give company to Shubman Gill, who started well by hitting a boundary off Ishant Sharma. However, Anrich Nortje was introduced in the attack soon and he dismissed Gill, who timed the ball straight to the cover fielder.

Vijay Shankar has been in good form this season and Gujarat had high hopes for him but Ishant bowled a brilliant knuckleball to get rid of the Tamil Nadu batter, leaving Titans in a precarious position at 26-3 after 4.6 overs.

Defending champions Gujarat needed a partnership to rebuild their innings but new man David Miller tried to play a cute paddle sweep off Kuldeep Yadav but was bowled, adding misery to his team’s position.

Gujarat Titans were 32/4 when Miller got out and Hardik was watching his batting partners going back to the pavilion one after another. The skipper needed some support and it came from Abhinav Manohar.

The duo of Hardik and Abhinav played cautiously against spin twins Kuldeep and Axar Patel, who were bowling nicely to keep things in control for Delhi. After bowling a few overs of spin, Warner went back to his pacers and they also bowled well, giving few boundaries here and there as the required run rate was going up with each passing over.

Hardik and Abhinav continued to grind out runs while Warner was bringing in the bowling changes in search of breakthroughs and not letting the batters settle down as Gujarat Titans were 71/4 after 14 overs.

With the required run rate increasingly sharp, Hardik decided to free his arms and got a few boundaries to get his fifty in 44 balls but Abhinav was not able to find boundaries and his struggle was ended by Khaleel Ahmed in the first ball of the 18th over.

Khaleel executed his slower ones and yorkers to perfection and gave just four runs in his over, making things tougher for Gujarat.

Anrich Nortje came to bowl the 19th over with Gujarat needing 33 runs in 12 balls. The pacer conceded just 3 runs in the first three balls but Tewatia had other plans and he hit Nortje for three consecutive sixes, to bring the equation in Gujarat’s favour.

With 12 runs needed off 6 balls for Gujarat to win, experienced Ishant had the big task in hand but he held his nerves well. The pacer gave just three runs in the first three balls with Hardik facing two of them and then removed the dangerous Tewatia in the fourth ball to keep Delhi Capitals in the game.

Rashid Khan scored just 2 runs in the fifth delivery and Ishant finished it well to give one run in the last ball to restrict Gujarat to 125/6 in 20 overs and win it for Delhi.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bat first and were off to a horrific start, losing five wickets inside the Power-play. The horror show started in the very first ball of the innings when Phil Salt toe-ended a swinging delivery bowled by Shami to cover, where David Miller took a simple catch.

Thereafter, confusion between Priyam Garg and David Warner resulted in the Delhi Capitals’ skipper getting run out with Rashid Khan dislodging the bails at the non-striker’s end, on a no-ball. Rilee Rossow, who came into the playing XI for Mitchell Marsh, also couldn’t do much as a classic swing delivery from Shami dismissed the South African batter.

Continuing his sensational show, Shami bowled another beauty to Manish Pandey to remove him with Saha taking a stunning catch behind the wicket. In the last delivery of the same over, the duo once again combined to dismiss Priyam Garg, who failed to negotiate the slightly late movement, leaving Delhi Capitals struggling at 23-5 at the end of 5 overs.

Shami, who was extracting the juice available in the pitch due to wet weather around, had the chance of getting the fifer but Axar Patel and Aman Hakim Khan, negotiated his last over well. However, Shami, who bowled all his four overs on the trot, single-handedly had Delhi on the mat by the end of the seventh over.

From there on, Axar and Aman rebuilt the Delhi innings as they rotated the strike nicely and got the odd boundary and six against the Gujarat bowlers. The pair added a sedate fifty-run stand for the sixth wicket but Mohit Sharma was once again incisive in the middle overs and ended that partnership, by taking the huge wicket of Axar.

Delhi were 73-6 after 14 overs when Axar got out and they needed something miraculous from their lower-order batter to post a competitive total. The likes of Aman Khan and Ripal Patel showed some intent and hit Mohit Sharma and Josh Little for a few timely boundaries and sixes, giving some impetus to the Capitals’ innings.

Aman smashed Mohit for a six to complete his half-century in 41 balls as Delhi looked to get the desired finish. In the penultimate over of the innings, Ripal welcomed Rashid Khan with a six but the leg-spinner removed Aman Khan later in the over with Abhinav Manohar taking a good catch at the deep.

Mohit Sharma dismissed Ripal Patel to get his 100th IPL wicket and bowled an excellent last over to keep Delhi Capitals to 130-8 in 20 overs, which was enough in the end.

    Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals 130/8 in 20 overs (Aman Hakim Khan 51, Axar Patel 27; Md Shami 4-11, Mohit Sharma 2-33) beat Gujarat Titans 125/6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 59 not out, Abhinav Manohar 26; Ishant Sharma 2-23, Khaleel Ahmed 2-24) by 5 runs.

BuzzFeed News’ business model turned to dust because they were always at the whim of mercurial tech titans | James Hennessy

    [ad_1]

The announcement of the demise of BuzzFeed News last week felt unlike the cavalcade of media closures and layoffs of the past decade. In a sense, it represented the death of an entire era.

BuzzFeed News, launched in 2011, imagined a format which would marry the intense virality and relentless social media focus of digital native publications with the serious reporting of major mastheads. The bet was that the site’s endless fountain of Harry Potter quizzes, viral news stories, celebrity gossip and pop culture gifs could subsidise a serious news operation, which would in turn lend real credibility to BuzzFeed as a whole.

The timing was perfect. Legacy media, already shaky after the financial crisis, was increasingly finding itself at the mercy of Facebook and Google, who had reshaped content distribution and the ad industry in their favour. Digital-only upstarts such as BuzzFeed, Mashable and Business Insider had built themselves to take advantage of those same trends and had secured a dominant share of millennial eyeballs as a result.

Suddenly, BuzzFeed News and a legion of imitators – buoyed by venture capital investment and the seemingly bottomless Facebook audience spigot – were making significant plays into the world of real news reporting; breaking stories left and right and adroitly packaging them for an extremely online audience. In those heady days, you could even imagine I Can Haz Cheeseburger opening a national security desk.

It’s difficult to understate the panic BuzzFeed’s foray into hard news inaugurated among the media old guard. In 2014, The New York Times distributed a “dire” internal report sounding the warning bell about the paper’s struggles to adapt to journalism’s digital revolution, which mentioned BuzzFeed two dozen times. (True to form, the existence of this report was first detailed by BuzzFeed.) Even the most storied news brands found themselves following the BuzzFeed playbook for distribution. Even the NYT was doing listicles!

Over the years, the cracks in BuzzFeed’s model started to show. The grand vision of a serious news organisation precariously balanced on top of a viral content shop was always a challenging one, and the company found it increasingly difficult to build a sustainable business. The venture capital injections weren’t enough, and it didn’t help that BuzzFeed’s advertisers were much happier to see their content run alongside the fun quizzes than, say, the Kevin Spacey exposé.

Another problem was talent. While BuzzFeed served as an incubator for some incandescently skilled young reporters with both a keen eye for the online world and classic reporting chops, it became clear to the old publications that they could simply… poach them. And so they did: the past few years has seen a generation of wunderkinds graduate from the BuzzFeed News universe into the old-school news businesses it once planned to topple.

But the bigger story here is one largely outside BuzzFeed’s control. It, alongside the tranche of other digital media startups of its era, threw in its lot vigorously with Facebook. It heartily embraced the new distribution model which had so frightened old-school publishers, surfing the waves of traffic generated by Facebook and other social apps such as Snapchat – which at one point evinced similar ambitions towards being a news platform.

This worked extremely well right up until it didn’t. While Mark Zuckerberg once saw news content as an excellent way to juice Facebook’s platform credibility and user engagement, escalating scandals eventually turned it into a serious political liability. The axe came down. As the Warren Buffet saying goes: only when the tide goes out do you learn who has been swimming naked. BuzzFeed needed Facebook far more than Facebook needed BuzzFeed.

BuzzFeed News is ultimately a casualty of that lopsided relationship. It never built a subscriptions business to account for the decline in social media traffic, and its model made less and less sense in an industry that was turning away from social media advertising dollars towards paywalls and good-old-fashioned direct monetary relationships with readers.

It’s quite likely we will remember BuzzFeed News and its ilk not as the revolutionary disrupters of the industry they were once thought to be, but as a decade-long intermission to the whim of the famously mercurial tech titans who briefly offered them patronage.

But that’s the nature of the news business. What BuzzFeed News did very successfully was change the way news was reported for the digital age, and it quite successfully bridged the gap between what was happening in real life and what was happening online. It helped train a generation of journalists who innately understood how those two worlds could speak to one another, and the reverberations of that understanding will be felt through the media for some time to come.

That will be BuzzFeed News’ ultimate legacy, even as its business model turns to dust.

Belafonte is gone, Poitier went before him. They were the titans who uplifted our world | Candace Allen

    [ad_1]

The ping today of a WhatsApp message and my heart wrenching at the news. Harry Belafonte. Gone.

Not that he hadn’t earned his rest at 96, but this was an incandescent beacon of most everything that can be good and right in a man – intelligence, closely considered and courageous political activism, guided by an unwavering moral compass that paused for neither breath nor age, encased in a package of heart-stopping beauty and grace.

Those seductive eyes and husky voice. In his earliest days, undulating hips tightly clad in what were sometimes known as calypso pants, shiny things that triggered dreams. Open-collared shirt clung to smooth muscular chest and the entertainment world hardly knowing what hit it when audiences of every race and class fell panting to his feet and all of it subversive vehicle for changing hearts and minds. Glorying himself but always us as well.

The world must always treasure and celebrate such a gift; and the poignancy of losing him, but 15 months after Sidney Poitier’s passing? Those of us of a certain age, particularly of the African diaspora, will be needing to take a moment to steady ourselves, for these two titans bestrode and uplifted our world. Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier, best friends and occasional competitors, born nine days apart, pioneers in challenging and changing dominant attitudes towards Black men by steadfastly refusing to embody either beast or fool: by being themselves and declaring what we all were/could be.

They were Harry and Sidney to us all, family members of whom we were beyond proud, loving them for what they did for us and for the joyous love they had for one another. Having assistant-directed several of his films, I was privileged to know Sidney’s intelligent dignity chased by a mischievous humour fairly well, but Harry’s fire was a more distanced legend to me.

He was known for his legendary support of Martin Luther King and what we all just call the Movement. But my aunt recalled this ambitious young buck luring fellow cast members to his cabin with promises of free food to try out his nightclub act, them all thinking him a bit full of himself, but reasonably talented.

Soon the world was simply wild about Harry and how he worked to circulate and elevate the breadth of African diasporic talent and culture. Talent like Miriam Makeba. Shattering walls in television and films. Encountering resistance but neither stopping nor caving.

I caught the occasional glimpse of Harry and Sidney together. One caramel in colour, the other ebony. Both tall. Comfortable in their skins and with what the world demanded of them. Never shirking before our need for them to always be their very best. Continually taking all breaths away.

I was only eye to eye with Harry once. When was it? One loses track. Six years ago, maybe seven. Some time before I’d written a novel on the Black female trumpet player Valaida Snow. Harry’s youngest daughter, Shari, had expressed interest in acquiring rights. Nothing had come of it, but then I heard that Harry himself would like to meet at his art-filled office in Hell’s Kitchen.

For two hours I was led through my tale by those probing eyes and that whispering voice, walking stick by his side but charisma undimmed, and I felt myself truly blessed to be in the presence of a king: one who will now rest with our deepest gratitude and profound love.

IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans win toss, elect to bowl first against Delhi Capitals

New Delhi: Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against Delhi Capitals in Match Seven of IPL 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Capitals are playing their first home game of the season after 2019 while the Titans are featuring in their first away match of the tournament, with the pitch described to be a flat one with a slight tinge of grass.

After winning the toss, Pandya said South Africa batter David Miller and uncapped India batter B. Sai Sudharsan come in for injured Kane Williamson, who is ruled out of the tournament, and all-rounder Vijay Shankar.

    MS Education Academy

“Not sure how the wicket is going to play. Obviously losing Kane — we’re gutted. Especially for him. As a team, we can manage but are gutted for him. Not much talking in our team. Just about keeping things simple and focusing on controllable. Pitch looks fantastic. Dew might kick in later.”

Delhi skipper David Warner said young wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel will make his IPL debut, with Anrich Nortje coming in for Rovman Powell, along with Khaleel Ahmed and Chetan Sakariya relegated to impact player substitutes.

“Just bat better, bowl better and field better than the opposition. Have to come out with positive intent and post a good total. It’s awesome. What a good turnout it is tonight. Hopefully, we can make it our fortress.”

    Playing XIs:

Delhi Capitals: Prithvi Shaw, David Warner (c), Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel, Abishek Porel (wk), Aman Khan, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje and Mukesh Kumar

Substitutes: Chetan Sakariya, Khaleel Ahmed, Manish Pandey, Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell

Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya (c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Josh Little, Yash Dayal and Alzarri Joseph.

Substitutes: R. Sai Kishore, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Abhinav Manohar, K.S. Bharat

IPL 2023: CSK captain MS Dhoni may miss opening match against Gujarat Titans, here’s why – Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Chennai Super Kings captain attended the IPL captain’s meet in Ahmedabad on Thursday and seemed to be in good spirits.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings, is questionable for Friday’s first game of the Indian Premier League 2023 against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad owing to a soreness in his left knee, according to The Indian Express.

According to the source, Dhoni is experiencing pain and does not want to risk further injury because of the team’s current lack of wicketkeepers. When asked for comment, though, the franchise declined.

Meanwhile, Dhoni was present at the captain’s meet held at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier that day. Rohit Sharma, captain of the Mumbai Indians, was absent due to sickness.

Dhoni has been putting in a lot of work in Chepauk in preparation for the IPL. The 41-year-old still seemed to be in peak physical condition.

It would be intriguing to watch who takes charge of the team if Dhoni is unable to play on Friday. Ben Stokes should be considered for the captaincy. In seven games last year, Ravindra Jadeja was the captain.

At CSK’s training session on Thursday, Dhoni reportedly did not bat at nets but instead spoke with Gujarat Titans coach Gary Kirsten, with whom he won the ODI World Cup in 2011.

It has also been learned that the decision on whether or not to include Dhoni in the starting Eleven will be made on the morning of the game. Devon Conway might maintain wickets if he makes the starting eleven. Either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will wear the gloves if the New Zealand international is left off.

Dhoni’s left knee, it has been said, has been giving him trouble over the last few days. During CSK’s intra-squad encounter on Monday, Dhoni was reluctant to step out to bat and was spotted sitting with a knee cap.

As he attempted to go for a two, he would hobble and struggle to get there.
