Historic Mah Laqa Bai Chanda complex falls on bad times; Govt should wake up to its upkeep

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The tomb of Mah Laqa Bai Chanda, a courtesan, poet and a philanthropist who lived between 1768 and 1824, has once again become victim of vagaries of time.

A young Mah Laqa Bai Chanda had shifted to Hyderabad from Aurangabad. She was brought to Hyderabad by her mother Raj Kanwar Bai during the times of the Second Nizam, Nizam Ali Khan also known as Sikander Jah.  Chanda was a baby with a ‘moon like face’ grew into multi-talented woman. She became a singer, dancer, courtesan and poet. She was also well versed in art of warfare and accompanied the Nizam on a few expeditions. Because of her beautiful looks and talents she had sway over the Nizam and at least three of his highest ranking nobles, all at the same time.  She was granted large tracts of land that stretched from Maula Ali up to Vidya Nagar. The Arts College building of the Osmania University is said to have been built over her jagir.

The tomb complex after remaining neglected for decades was restored between 2010 and 2011 through the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. This was the first constructive intervention of the US embassy and subsequently by the US Consulate General in Hyderabad.  The fund was small—only Rs 40 lakh–as compared to the magnitude of the project and had no follow up provision when it was given.

    MS Education Academy

Its renovated version was opened for public. The renovation was so good that the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage acknowledged it by a citation.

Soon after the renovation the then AP Government decided to declare it a protected monument and the Department of State Archeology was appointed a caretaker.

But for some unknown reasons the government stopped paying for the monthly salary to the caretaker.  A few months later it cancelled his appointment altogether.

A recent visit to the tomb complex revealed that it has fallen on bad times one more time. There is no maintenance of the complex.  After this writer went around looking at the condition of complex a person in civilian clothes came in. In an informal chat he said that he is the watchman and looks after the upkeep of the garden areas within the complex. He also does the cleaning of the floor around the graves of Chanda and her mother.

That chowkidar had nothing to do with the worsening condition of the complex which is not visited by any government officials in long years.

    20230204 131718

Asked why the building on the southern side is locked out he said he has no idea about it.  But some visitors to the mosque that is located within the complex revealed that some Shia community leaders had laid claim to complex and had occupied that area.  The police intervened, cleared the place of those persons and locked it up. It happened a few years ago and since then that portion of the complex remains out of public reach.

“Under the US Ambassador’s Fund, we received about Rs 40 lakh for the restoration work. As it did not cover the garden and mosque, we are trying to rope in other interested organisations for the same,” said Sajjad Shahid, secretary, Centre for Deccan Studies (CDS) that has spearheaded this restoration project had told this writer at that time.

“CDS decided to take it up because we were drawn by the historicity  and poetry of Mah Laqa Bai and the brilliant architecture of the structure,” had said Scott Kugle, an American historian who was also associated with the restoration project. Kugle had added, “The tomb should be promoted by the state tourism department as a must-see destination of Hyderabad.

Shahid who is associated with several restoration projects in the city including the Seven Tombs in the vicinity of Golconda Fort said since the government of Telangana is trying to work on many historical projects it should devise means to keep the structures intact.  “Since Mah Luqa Bai Chanda complex is one of the distinct projects, it should be revived and open for public,” he said.

  • COVID-19 survivers at 5 times higher risk of cardiac death: Telangana IMA

COVID-19 survivers at 5 times higher risk of cardiac death: Telangana IMA

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Indian Medical Association estimated that youngsters who suffered COVID-19 infection last year are prone to a five times higher risk of death by cardiac arrest.

With an alarming increase in the number of sudden death cases being reported in Telangana, the situation begs further analysis and close scrutiny of these unfortunate events.

According to one estimate by the IMA, the mechanism by which COVID-19 causes these deaths is multifactorial.

Altered lifestyle, increased stress and reduced preventive checks also contributed to these excess deaths that are unlikely to be related to the COVID-19 vaccines given the present evidence and
    temporal sequence of events.

However, further research on the matter may help alleviate the fears of the public, said their press note.

Two kinds of sudden cardiac deaths

    • Deaths following an acute heart attack are predominant ones that are witnessed in slightly elder subgroups and in those with traditional coronary risk factors and they follow an acute heart attack.
    • Sudden deaths due to causes other than heart attack are rare instances in previously healthy individuals without any coronary risk factors.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome, Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, and congenital coronary anomalies are some of the causes behind such events.

While the first group is amenable to detection by traditional preventive cardiac tests like ECG, ECHO and TMT, and can be avoided to a considerable extent by cardio-protective behaviour, the second group needs different detection algorithms like long-term ECG monitoring, electrophysiological testing, and genetic testing in individuals with higher risk.

IMA advises individuals to follow the guidance

Individuals above 30 years are encouraged to get their blood pressure, blood sugar and fasting lipid profile checked.

Those above 40 years may get an annual cardiac check-up done which should include an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and an exercise tolerance (treadmill) test.

This may be done from an earlier age if there are coronary risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, smoking, family history of heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, lack of proper sleep and increased psychological stress.

Following preventive cardiac behaviour which entails eating healthy, exercising regularly, maintaining ideal body weight, avoiding smoking and moderating alcohol consumption, reducing stress, sleeping for a minimum of six to eight hours and detecting and controlling hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol are advised to avoid heart attacks.

Citizens are encouraged to learn bystander CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED usage and encourage others to learn CPR as well.

Avoid strenuous activity in an inebriated state, and slowly get back (and not rush) to previous exercise levels following viral infections.

People are advised not to panic looking at the hyped-up deaths being documented in the media reports. It is important to realize that these are not homogenous events and there are many different and sometimes unknown causes for these unfortunate deaths.

People are advised not to follow crash diets which may lead to sudden changes in metabolism.

IMA urges the government to take preventive measures:

To hasten the CPR training sessions as stated by the health minister with a goal to empower at least 50 percent of the adult population with this skill by the end of 2024.

To install the public access defibrillators as promised by the IT minister KTR to enhance their numbers and reach, the instructions from these defibrillators should be in local languages.

To include CPR as the curriculum in higher secondary school education so that children are equipped with this essential life skill.

To gather data and collect statistics about sudden cardiac arrests and keep the same in the public domain for constructive discussion and understanding.

To allocate funds for research into the reasons regarding these deaths, especially in the young and to coordinate and publish clinical studies with a view to reducing sudden deaths.

To advise the public to allow a post-mortem examination of the suddenly departed.

To reduce the panic among the public by sharing genuine information regarding heart diseases and heart health and to quell false information.

To constitute “Sudden Death Investigation Committees” with the help of IMA doctors to probe into each sudden death to reduce panic due to the perceived causes of sudden deaths.

Saudi Arabia: No limit on number of times pilgrims can perform Umrah

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) said there is no maximum or minimum limit on the number of times for a piligrim to perform Umrah in the kingdom, local media reported.

“However, it is mandatory to comply with the directive to take an appointment for the specific time for performing the pilgrimage,” the Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Haj and Umrah said while replying to queries.

The ministry stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines for making an appointment to perform the pilgrimage.

The ministry said that whoever arrived in the Kingdom on a visit, tourist or work visa can perform Umrah.

The pilgrim can also change the means of transportation he used for his arrival while leaving the kingdom.

In January 2023, Saudi Arabia launched a stopover transit visa that allows the holder to perform Umrah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque, and attend various events across the kingdom. The four-day transit visa is valid for 90 days.

In recent months, Saudi Arabia has unveiled a range of facilities for Muslims wishing to come to the country to perform the Umrah.

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah for Muslims, which can be performed at any time of the year. It consists of performing rituals in the Masjid Al Haram. In other words, one performs Umrah to rid the soul of past sins.

  • F1 2023 | Here are the Sky and TV8 TV times of the Bahrain GP

F1 2023 | Here are the Sky and TV8 TV times of the Bahrain GP

    [ad_1]

The time to hide, try, experiment and compare is over. Finally it’s getting serious. The 2023 Formula 1 World Championship kicks off this weekend in Sakhir with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Sakhir track is once again a great protagonist after hosting the first and only Formula 1 pre-season test last weekend. The drivers and teams will be able to count on the data collected to arrive ready and try to extrapolate the maximum possible potential from their respective single-seaters.

At this point in the season it was only possible to make assumptions. The only certainty – even if not absolute in terms of advantage over rivals – is Red Bull Racing. Right from the first kilometres, the RB19 seemed ready to give its best both on the fast lap and, above all, on the race pace.

Tire management that is already of the highest level which, at least in part, seems to lead to an advantage over Ferrari, ahead of its rivals. The questions will be precisely the following: how much advantage will Red Bull have? Will they be able to change things already from Sakhir?

    Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes F1 W14

Photo by: Zak Mauger / Motorsport Images

And then, of course, impossible to forget Mercedes. Toto Wolff’s team has decided to pursue a single-seater design and structural philosophy very similar to that of last season, but the Austrian manager himself stated that we will see the W14 change significantly, a symptom that the road taken was not the one right.

Even more confusion, if possible, regarding the center group. Alpine is perhaps the team that has most hidden itself in terms of performance, but both of its pilots have spoken of the A523 in a more than positive way. The surprise could instead be Aston Martin, which with Fernando Alonso is aiming for fourth place and, why not, on occasion even tripping one of the three top teams unexpectedly.

  • How many times did Parliament discuss conduct of Speaker, SC asks Uddhav faction

How many times did Parliament discuss conduct of Speaker, SC asks Uddhav faction

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday shot a volley of questions at the Uddhav Thackeray faction, asking how many times did the Parliament discuss a review of the conduct of the Speaker, why is that question raised before the court, and also, why should the court change rules just because one or two Speakers went astray.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Uddhav Thackeray faction, submitted before a five-judge constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, that “your lordships have great confidence in the constitutional office of the Speaker but do they discharge this confidence?”

At this, the Chief Justice replied: “You also have that confidence when you say that the Speaker has to decide the disqualification petitions… that is not dependent on who is the Speaker, Mr Sibal”. He added that the constitutional authority of the Speaker to decide is not based on who the Speaker is.

Sibal said the a Speaker who appoints the whip and Leader of the Opposition without reference to the political party, “you think he can decide in my favour, there is no way!”

The Chief Justice said: “The first Speaker in defiance of legislative rules gave two days’ notice… this is the way everybody is behaving. There are two options: either you debunk the authority of the Speaker or.. in a democracy you value the office of the institution… denigrating constitutional offices including the office of the Speaker.”

When Sibal said they are denigrating themselves, the bench — also comprising Justices M.R. Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and P.S. Narasimha — said: “It is a race to the bottom then.”

Justice Narasimha told Sibal: “Legislators, parliamentarians…. decided upon the Speaker to be the tribunal.. it is parliamentarians’ decision, the Tenth Schedule. Therefore, the court is only interpreting that…”

Sibal referred to the decision of the apex court on 27 June last year, where the court granted interim relief to Shinde faction by extending the time to file responses to the disqualification notices. It later, on June 29, gave the go-ahead to a floor test called by the Governor.

Justice Narasimha orally observed: “On one hand if the Speaker is with you, you would say it is a constitutional authority. What is wrong with it… if you have some difficulty, you mean, not you. Look at the way Speakers have behaved. For us, as long as the constitution bench judgment is there, we will go by the fact that the Speaker is the tribunal.”

The bench further added that the Speaker is the presiding officer as per Tenth Schedule and “we will not go back on the decision, that is the final decision, as far as we are concerned”.

Sibal replied by that logic, the June 27 order could not have been passed, and that is what led to what way we are today.

Justice Kohli said that if one or two Speakers have gone astray, would the court be inclined to debunk the whole procedure as laid down and the Tenth Schedule?

To this, Sibal said: My intention is not that, I have been telling what is happening.” Justice Kohli said then it is a conundrum. Sibal said: “Yes, it is a conundrum, a constitutional conundrum and somebody has to sort it out.”

At this juncture, justice Narasimha said: “Another question, every time this question is raised before the court. I would want to ask you how many times did the parliamentarians raise this question in the Parliament saying let us actually amend the Constitution.”

“How many times did the discussion take place in the Parliament to review the conduct of the Speaker. Why is that question raised before the court, which is not a forum for consideration. how many times parties have sat down together and decided this is not working?” he asked.

“Once Kihoto Hollohan was rendered then,” Sibal said referring to the apex court verdict in the 1992 case, upholding the sweeping discretion available to the Speaker in deciding cases of disqualification of MLAs.

Justice Narasimha replied: “Why, it only upheld the Tenth Schedule. It is your making, the Tenth Schedule. This will take us nowhere, Mr Sibal. Frankly, unless there is an amendment to the Constitution, there is a reference, a direct challenge…”

The top court made these observations while dealing with Maharashtra political crisis triggered due to rebellion in the Shiv Sena. It will continue to hear the matter on Wednesday.

On February 17, the apex court had declined to make immediate reference to a seven-judge bench the reconsideration of its 2016 Nabam Rebia judgment, which restricted the power of the Speaker to examine disqualification petitions against MLAs if a resolution for his removal is pending.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India said the issue of reference will be decided only with the merits of the case and fixed the matter for hearing on merits on February 21.

  • ‘A Holy Conspiracy’ presents true picture of our times, says Naseeruddin Shah

‘A Holy Conspiracy’ presents true picture of our times, says Naseeruddin Shah

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah on Saturday said his latest film “A Holy Conspiracy” depicts the true situation of the society plagued by toxicity.

Directed by Saibal Mitra, the courtroom drama explores the subject of constitutional right to differ in religious beliefs.

It is adapted from the American play “Inherit the Wind” that was inspired by the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial in Tennessee, USA, wherein a school teacher was prosecuted for teaching evolution theory in a church-funded school.

Speaking at a session during ‘MOSAIC: Judte-Judte (unite) JNU!’ festival in Jawaharlal Nehru University here, the actor said he read the play in the 1970s and ever since wanted to be a part of its adaptation in any form.

“‘Inherit the Wind’ is a play that I read in the mid-70s and it was a great piece of writing and I wanted to do it on the stage but couldn’t… It picturised the toxicity in which we are living today and the dependence on superstition where we are beginning to mistake mythology for history. I felt I certainly should be a part of this movie,” Shah said.

In “A Holy Conspiracy”, a science teacher is suspended from his Christian missionary school, and imprisoned on false charges, when he refuses to teach the Biblical story of creation before Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.

The story then follows the courtroom battle between a reclusive lawyer Anton De Souza (Shah) and his old ally Reverend Basanta Kumar Chatterjee, played by late cinema legend Soumitra Chatterjee.

Shah said as an actor he aims to capture life as it is through his work and “A Holy Conspiracy” ticked all the boxes.

“I felt this is a significant film because it is trying to portray a true picture of the times and that’s the kind of cinema I believe is significant. This is why I consider documentaries more significant than feature films. Documentaries can capture life as it is which no other form can do.

“Cinema is a combination of all the other art forms. It’s a mix of theatre, photography, painting, architecture, sculpture, music and choreography. It has assimilated all these forms… So I said yes to this without any hesitation. This is a film that might be seen 50 or 100 years later and will give a true picture of what the situation of our country was like in our time,” the 72-year-old actor said.

So keen was the actor to be a part of the project that he would have said yes to any role in the film.

“I felt a responsibility to definitely be a part of this film. I would have appeared in any capacity Saibal wanted me. I have played many great roles and I’m not hungry for them anymore. I’m not thirsty for roles. I want to be part of films that I will enjoy and which will be remembered,” he added.

Shah said when he starts working on a film, he never thinks about how the final outcome.

“When I’m in the middle of a job I don’t think about how this is going to turn out. I just try to concentrate on what I’m supposed to do,” he added.

As an artiste, Shah said he doesn’t believe that an actor should lose himself in a role.

“There are many senior actors who would say ‘I was so lost in my performance that I didn’t notice anything’. I think that kind of talk is nonsense. If you get lost, you should not be acting. You should be alert to everything.

“So I just concentrate on what I’m supposed to do. Whether a film turns out good is not in my hands. There is no way to predict how a film will turn out when you read a script. That is entirely up to the maker.”

Another reason for saying yes to “A Holy Conspiracy” was the opportunity to collaborate with Chatterjee. The movie was shot before the legendary actor’s demise in November 2020 at the age of 85.

“I was also looking forward to working with Soumitra Chatterjee. I have to admit I greatly envied him. He appeared in great movies like ‘Apu Sansar’ and many others with Satyajit Ray.

“When I did meet him, he was extremely nice and civil. He appreciated my work and everything but he wasn’t in the best of health at that time,” Shah said.

Director Mitra said though “A Holy Conspiracy” was released in India in July last year, the team could not publicise the movie much to bring the audience to the theatres.

“There are people who want it to come on OTT and everything but we don’t have any place on OTT. Some executives told me that they liked the movie but they can’t take the film on their platform. So I don’t know, someday we will find this film on YouTube. It is for the people,” Mitra said.
