I miscarried, while my best friend had a healthy baby. Is it time to move on from the friendship?

    [ad_1]

After many years of waiting for the “right time” and then trying to conceive, my best friend and I fell pregnant at almost exactly the same time. I miscarried at 11 weeks, while she went on to have a healthy baby.

I had to distance myself from my friend, as her growing bump was such a cruel reminder of my loss. I felt immensely guilty about it, because obviously she had done nothing wrong. At the time I thought she understood, but when I felt ready to reconnect after the baby was born, she made some comments that showed perhaps she didn’t get it at all. There was an accusation that I had abandoned her. It also felt like a very selfish comment, because in all that time she had never checked in with me to see if I was OK, and I also could have done with a friend.

I think too much has changed now for us to reconcile. She has her baby, and I’m moving away. And yet, the situation haunts me. I feel so sad that a 20-year friendship has been lost over life events that were no one’s fault. I fear that speaking to her could end up creating further upset and another bout of depression for me, as it did the last time. Is it time to just let it go and move on?

Eleanor says: First of all I’m so sorry for your loss. Any grief feels like it draws a curtain between you and the rest of the world, but this is especially true when a big part of the grief is for what could have been. It gets even harder to connect with people through mourning: harder to share memories of what you’re missing, harder to know the loss feels as concrete to them as it does to you. The isolation of the grief you’re experiencing makes it even more difficult to feel isolated from a friend as well.

It sounds like part of the problem is you don’t feel properly understood. An event that’s become such a big part of your life and emotional landscape doesn’t seem to take up the right amount of space in how she understands you; like the map you have of yourself and the map she has of you don’t match. That makes it really difficult to have a friendship. It’s hard to connect when you’re not even really seeing each other.

These kinds of mismatches happen in all kinds of relationships, over all kinds of loss – someone who loves us just does not clock how big something is to us, how much it still affects us, how near to the surface it always is.

The issue is, the reason we got into the mismatch is the same reason it’s unlikely to resolve on its own. The whole problem is that something just hasn’t occurred to someone in the right kind of way – it isn’t occupying their attention. So unless they get a new reason to see it, there’s not much reason to expect they suddenly will. Really there are only two options: speak to her, giving her that new reason to see what you’re feeling, or decide what to do if this never changes. It can be oddly emancipating to spend some time with the realisation that those are the only ways forward. To get to grips with the fact that she’s very unlikely to see it on her own.

I understand the fear that a conversation will just cause further upset, but on the other hand, it might be a huge relief to feel some of the connectedness and visibility you’ve been missing. You’ve described this to me in such a matter of fact, compassionate way. This is no one’s fault; she did nothing wrong; you felt guilty for needing to distance yourself; but now you feel so sad at the thought of losing her.

I have to imagine there’s a way to talk to her that comes from that place, instead of devolving into who abandoned who (you could just set aside the fact that she didn’t check in on you either). It could instead be sharing something, from a place of vulnerability, that you’d like your close friend to understand: of course you were thrilled for her journey with motherhood, but it was painful to be reminded of your own.

Often the people we love don’t realise how things are for us. If we’re lucky, though, that’s something they want to fix as much as we do.

Freezer removed from Banksy domestic violence artwork for second time

    [ad_1]

A Banksy artwork in Margate has been taken apart for a second time, after its first removal by the local council before being returned again.

On Thursday morning, people visiting the mural found the chest freezer, which was part of the artwork, missing. This was despite it having been returned by Thanet district council on Wednesday.

The artwork, called Valentine’s Day mascara, appears to be on the theme of violence against women and girls.

It depicts a caricature image of a stereotypical 1950s housewife, wearing yellow washing-up gloves and a blue apron, pushing her husband into a freezer. The woman is shown to be smiling despite having a swollen eye and a missing tooth.

The piece – first seen on Tuesday – used a real freezer, which was deemed to be a safety hazard by the council. It had said it would return “once it has been made safe”.

A statement read: “A fridge freezer which is believed to have been part of the installation has been removed by council operatives on the grounds of safety as it was on public land.”

It added: “We will be contacting the owner of the property to discuss the options to preserve the artwork for the district.”

The mural has been given a top valuation of £2m by an expert, but only when the freezer is included.

But after the council returned the freezer, it has been removed for a second time. It is understood the fridge has been taken back into storage for safe keeping, this time by a gallery that was called in by the owners of the property to help preserve the artwork.

Julian Usher, the chief executive of Red Eight Gallery, told ITV News: “The only reason we’re taking it away is purely from a security perspective. We can’t have 24-hour security guards standing there, they were there until the Perspex was put up.”

He added: “Now that’s up that’ll protect the piece, hopefully, from vandals or anyone marking or tagging the wall. The chest freezer is now back into storage and then we’re looking into, with the owner, what they want to do with it ultimately.

“Whether we can find something just to replace it in the meantime, which doesn’t matter if it goes missing, that is what we’re still looking into.”

  • The time George Santos tried to raise crazy money to host a simple rally for Trump

The time George Santos tried to raise crazy money to host a simple rally for Trump

    [ad_1]

    202301 santos magazine francis 23

Santos was defensive about the unusually high price tag for a local event.

“Understand that I’m not here for personal gains or for any kind of financial gains,” he said in a spring 2019 video message to the group posted on its Facebook page. “All monies raised are solely for structuring this movement slash organization.”

Santos was only able to pull in $645 out of a $20,000 goal. It’s unclear what happened to the funds.

While Santos was ultimately unsuccessful in raising $20,000 for the Trump group, his extravagant asks drew questions about whether he was out for personal, financial gain. The episode has echoes of other fundraising efforts that have made Santos the target of state and federal prosecutors. The Federal Election Commission is probing questionable campaign expenses including nearly $11,000 spent on rent for his Long Island home and the FBI is investigating claims that he absconded with $3,000 in donations meant for a disabled U.S. Navy veteran’s dying service dog.

Santos was a fringe player in 2019. He’s now a national political figure — but not for anything he’s accomplished. Instead, the Republican congressman who was elected in November in a swing district on Long Island, is best known for largely inventing his campaign biography. He has resisted calls for his resignation, saying his resume was only embellished, although he did step away from committee assignments citing the “ongoing attention surrounding both my personal and campaign financial investigations.”

Naysa Woomer, Santos’ communications director, said she could not comment on any campaign or personal matters, and calls to Santos’ personal attorney were not returned.

In spring 2019, a year before his first, unsuccessful run for Congress, Santos became a founding member of United for Trump, a grassroots group supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection. At a March 23 rally at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Santos was filmed holding a “Gays for Trump” sign.

By March 25, Santos set up a GoFundMe account that other United for Trump members pushed to the group to raise money for a future “Northeast tour” of Trump rallies.

He posted a video in the United for Trump Facebook group to introduce himself to other members that month.

Santos had a few specific asks: He said he wanted to establish an LLC with an accountant, at a cost of $500 to $750. United for Trump also needed a lawyer — “to keep in our back pocket and just to retain” — for $2,500.

In the March video, Santos alluded to “a lot of confusion as to what we are raising money for,” acknowledging it can cost less than $100 to get permits for rallies. But, he explained, United for Trump would be different than what members were used to, calling it “an organization to actually give power.”

In May 2019, Santos was listed in a Facebook post as the group’s “president” using part of his full legal name, George Anthony Devolder. Other United for Trump committee members included Joseph, who organized central New York rallies for a group called ACT for America, described as a “national anti-Muslim hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Joseph said she met Santos when he introduced himself to her at the March Trump Tower rally and that he “seemed like a sweet kid.”

“In grassroots, we accept everyone who wants to join and do a little work,” she said, adding that after the New York City rally, most of United for Trump’s other events envisioned for that year “didn’t get off the ground.”

Joseph said she was preoccupied with other things and began fading away from the group around the time Santos became its president, and said she didn’t remember the group getting very far with organizing events while she was involved.

In July 2019, Santos did help organize a counterprotest to an Impeach Trump rally in Buffalo — an event that turned violent.

Rus Thompson, a longtime conservative activist from Buffalo, was the lead organizer of the counter-rally. He had no recollection of Santos attending the event. The New York congressman should “never have been elected,” Thompson said in a recent telephone interview.

United for Trump planned to hold another Erie County rally at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on August 3, 2019, according to administrator posts in the group’s Facebook page.

Santos had asked United for Trump members to help raise six-figures for the August event.

“Need your help. The est. cost to bring the pro-Trump rally to Buffalo with credible speakers is $20,000,” according to a call for donations that went out in the Facebook group.

Thompson questioned the $20,000 price tag for Buffalo speakers.

“I never paid speakers,” he said.

Planning for the August Buffalo rally was the last time Santos seemed to be involved with United for Trump. In October 2019, he announced his 2020 candidacy for Congress at a Queens Village Republican Club dinner. His biography for the event doesn’t mention United for Trump.

Thompson said he didn’t remember an event happening in Buffalo around that time. The location Santos proposed, he said, didn’t make sense.

“That’s really expensive and not set up for a rally,” Thompson said. “Car or boat show, yes, but political rally? No.”

Dr Mehta enquired from the executing agencies about the bottlenecks affecting the pace of their work. He instantly passed on directions to the concerned government departments for taking the measures to address them. He made out that both the executing agencies and different government departments should work in coordination with each other and held regular deliberations for resolving issues without wasting time. He asked them to own these significant national projects and show eagerness in seeing them completed well on time. He fixed timelines for each of the road project for its completion.

The Principal Secretary, PWD, Shailendra Kumar provided details of progress made so far in constructing different National Highways. • Opinion | The First Time America Was Attacked by Balloons

Opinion | The First Time America Was Attacked by Balloons

    [ad_1]

    united states aerial objects 93749

Today, the history of the Fu-Go balloons holds three important lessons for the leaders of China and the United States as they navigate the current crisis.

First, there is something about unseen, high-altitude objects that invites a degree of alarm out of proportion to their direct harm for national security. Like the Fu-Go balloons, initial indications suggest that the military value of China’s spy balloons is minimal. But their impact on public perception and alarm has been hard to overstate.

Witness the reaction of Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, where the balloon was first spotted, who said, “We think we know what they were going to collect, but we don’t know. That scares the hell out of me.” Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, meanwhile, ripped Defense officials at a hearing for not acting when the balloon was above her state: “It’s like this administration doesn’t think that Alaska is any part of the rest of the country!” Beijing — or any other nation tempted to release high-altitude objects into American airspace — must understand this special sensitivity and take any measures necessary to avoid repeat spy balloon incursions.

A second lesson is that balloons can be surprisingly stealthy weapons. It took U.S. authorities several months to piece together Japan’s balloon bomb plot. China’s high-altitude balloons, meanwhile, appear to have exploited what a senior Air Force officer called a “domain awareness gap” — meaning the balloons passed through holes in America’s existing air defenses. Such gaps are especially concerning if, as in the 1940s, they create new avenues for adversaries to attack U.S. territory.

China, which possesses far more sophisticated weaponry than balloons, including hypersonic missiles, has little reason to exploit these gaps to mount an actual attack — but terrorists or rogue states might. That is of no less concern to national security experts. At a minimum, the prospect of weaponization is likely to increase the risk of confrontation, whether between the U.S. and China or another aerial adversary, in the event of any future airborne incursions. Leaders on all sides must redouble their efforts to strengthen crisis communication channels to defuse any future incidents as quickly as possible.

A third, final and much happier lesson of the Fu-Go balloons is that crisis and conflict can eventually be transformed into cooperation and even comity. Indeed, the story of the Fu-Go balloon bombs had a surprisingly happy ending, thanks to the actions of individual Americans and Japanese who worked to transform wartime tragedy into postwar partnership. In the 1980s, residents of Bly, Ore., which suffered the only casualties caused by the balloon bombs, began a correspondence with Japanese citizens involved in producing the bombs. The former American and Japanese antagonists even held a poignant in-person meeting in Bly after the war.

We must hope that a similar ending emerges from this latest crisis in U.S.-China relations. Fortunately, both sides have an opportunity to ensure that it does. Though blighted by the balloon incident, China recently re-opened itself to foreigners without onerous quarantine and Covid testing requirements for the first time in almost three years. This long overdue opening should be cause for celebration and a resumption of frayed people-to-people ties. In the coming months, large numbers of American businesspeople, researchers, students, journalists and others are likely to travel to China once again. Leaders in both Washington and Beijing must create the space for this exchange to thrive, whatever differences exist between the two governments. China, for its part, must start by preventing any further aerial incursions into U.S. airspace.

More than anything, the history of the Fu-Go balloons shows that when tensions are as high as they are between the U.S. and China, countries must use people-to-people ties to better ground their rocky relationship — or risk subjecting the world to far greater turbulence.
