Mississippi man charged with threatening to kill U.S. senator

Sappington went to the Hickory Flat residence of George Wicker, the senator’s cousin, on April 26, according to FBI special agent Jason Nixon’s testimony.
“Sappington reportedly said he intended to kill Roger Wicker because of his involvement in an incident (Sappington) had with law enforcement back in 2014,” Nixon said.
In February 2014, Sappington was arrested for the aggravated assault of his brother. He tried to flee and was bitten by a police dog. Authorities later transported him to a trauma center hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, to treat injuries he sustained during his arrest, the Daily Journal reported.
He objected to being taken over state lines without a hearing and felt that he was kidnapped, FBI special agent Matthew Shanahan wrote in an affidavit.
More recently, Sappington was released from prison in November for the theft of property worth more than $10,000. He tried unsuccessfully to retain an attorney for his objections to how his 2014 arrest transpired, the newspaper reported.
Wicker has represented Mississippi in the United States Senate since 2007.

Man jailed for threatening British Indian ex-minister Priti Patel
[ad_1]
London: A 65-year-old man has been jailed for five months for mailing a threatening letter to former Home Secretary Priti Patel after admitting to sending a grossly offensive letter to the Indian-origin ex-minister at a hearing.
Pooneeraj Canakiah was sentenced by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London last week.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in England said the letter, which was addressed to Patel and had the words “personal letter” handwritten upon it, was opened by a member of her staff on January 22 last year when she was still the Home Secretary.

Patel did not see the letter personally, and forensic testing was used to trace the writer.
“The content of the letter was grossly offensive and abusive. Canakiah thought that he would not be caught, however, forensic analysis proved that he wrote the letter,” said Senior Crown Prosecutor Lauren Doshi, from the Complex Casework Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service in London South.
“This conviction and sentence sends a clear message, that threats of this nature are taken very seriously and will not be tolerated. The CPS will not hesitate to prosecute such offences whenever our legal test is met,” she said.
The forensic tests revealed that a letter to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) had been written by Canakiah on top of the paper used for the letter to Patel.
Analysis of indentations in the paper revealed Canakiah’s name and address, and further analysis of the handwriting on the envelope and letter proved that he was the author.
When interviewed by the police, Canakiah – a healthcare sector worker from east London – denied having written the letter but eventually pleaded guilty to one offence of sending a letter conveying an indecent or offensive message in March last year.

Cong tweets video of Nadda’s remarks in Karnataka, accuses him of ‘threatening’ voters
[ad_1]
New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday tweeted a video clip of BJP chief J P Nadda’s remarks in Karnataka, and accused him of “threatening” the voters and calling his comments a “blatant attack on democracy”.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted a video clip of Nadda addressing an election gathering in Karnataka, to attack the BJP
“Karnataka mein vikas ki ganga behti rahe esliye main kamal ke nishan par vote maangne aaya hoon. Karnataka mein vikas chalta rahe, nirantar chalta rahe, ye chunav ka mudda hai. Jo Modi ji ka aashirvaad hai usse kahin Karnataka vanchit na ho jaye esliye mera aapse nivedan hai ki aapne kamal ko jitana hai aur Karnataka ke vikas ko aage badhana hai (Vote for the lotus symbol to ensure the river of development continues to flow in Karnataka. Development continues in a constant manner in the state is an issue in the elections. So that the state is not devoid of Modi ji’s blessings, I appeal to you to vote for the lotus symbol and take forward development),” Nadda is heard saying in the video clip.

Tagging the clip, Ramesh said in a tweet in Hindi, “There should be a limit to devotion too, Nadda ji. Why are you threatening and scaring the people of Karnataka?”
With the blessings of the people of Karnataka, a Congress government is going to be formed, Ramesh asserted.
The Congress from its official Twitter handle also tweeted a portion of the clip to hit out at the BJP.
“BJP President J P Nadda threatens to withhold constitutional rights from the people of Karnataka if they don’t vote for the corrupt 40% BJP government,” the Congress said in a tweet.
“This is a blatant attack on democracy and shows how the BJP plans to treat the Kannadigas,” the party alleged.
“We are not subjects of a Raja but citizens of a federal country governed by the constitution,” the Congress said.
The assembly polls will be held on May 10 and the results will be announced on May 13. The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in the southern state.

Antilia case: Threatening ‘most strongly guarded family’ unthinkable, says Waze
[ad_1]
Mumbai: Industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his kin are the “most strongly guarded private family of India” and “threatening” them with “unexplodable” explosives is one of the “silliest” things to do and under no circumstance he can think of committing such a crime, former policeman Sachin Waze has said in his fresh bail plea filed before a Mumbai court in the Antilia bomb scare case.
Waze, currently lodged in jail, is a key accused in the case of recovery of an explosives -laden SUV from near Ambani’s house, Antilia, in February 2021, and the subsequent murder of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran, whose vehicle was used in the crime.
He has moved the bail application before a special NIA (National Investigation Agency) court, saying the entire case against him “is based on bald allegations with inadmissible material” that cannot be relied upon at any stage to prosecute him.

The court asked the prosecution to file its reply on Waze’s plea and adjourned the matter to April 26.
His plea said as a citizen of India, Waze has the highest regards for Ambani and his family members for their contribution in growth of the Indian economy.
As a police officer, the applicant (Waze) is fully aware that the Ambanis are the “most strongly guarded private family” of India, thus “threatening” them that, too, with certain “unexplodable” low-quality explosives coupled with irrelevant anonymous note is one of the most silly things one could ever do, the bail plea said.
Under no circumstances the applicant could even think of committing such a “silly” crime, it added.
There was no material on record in form of statement to suggest anyone, including the Ambani family members, was in fear of death as alleged by the prosecution, said the former assistant police inspector (API), who was dismissed from service in May 2021 after his arrest.
Even if the prosecution’s case is assumed to be true without admitting the same, such an activity would not amount to an “act of terror” as contemplated under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act), Waze’s application claimed.
The former API is currently in judicial custody and lodged at Taloja jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai.
On February 25, 2021, an explosives-laden SUV was found near industrialist Ambani’s residence in south Mumbai. Hiran, who had said he was in possession of the SUV before it was allegedly stolen, was found dead in a creek in neighbouring Thane on March 5, 2021.
Besides Waze, a few more police officials and some private individuals are named as accused in the high-profile case.

Caller threatening to kill Salman Khan on April 30 detained by Mumbai police
[ad_1]
Mumbai: The Mumbai police have tracked and detained a person who threatened “to kill Bollywood megastar Salman Khan on April 30”, top officials said here on Tuesday.
On Monday evening, the Mumbai police control room received a call from one unidentified person who conveyed a terse message: “On (April) 30, I shall kill Salman Khan. You can inform him,” and disconnected.
When the police control room staff called him back on the mobile number, he identified himself as ‘Rocky bhai’, a ‘gaushala rakshak’, speaking from Jodhpur in Rajasthan.

Swinging into action, several police teams fanned out to track and identify the caller, who was traced to Dolkhamb village in Thane, nearly 50 km north of Mumbai.
A police team reached there and attempted to catch him, but with the help of his friends, he managed to escape on a motorcycle.
After a chase of some distance, the police team managed to intercept him and subjected him to questioning.
He admitted to having made the threat call to the actor, and thereafter, he was handed over to the Azad Maidan police station in Mumbai, which detained him and is investigating further.
The caller is reportedly said to be a minor hailing from Rajasthan and his identity has not yet been revealed, and police suspect it may be a prank.

“Beating up, threatening people to sign documents…” Chhattisgarh CM
[ad_1]
Raipur: Coming down heavily on Enforcement Directorate for conducting searches at several locations in the State, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday alleged that people are being beaten up and threatened to sign documents.
“They (ED) are beating up people and pressurizing them to sign documents and threaten them(Maarpit Kar Rahe Hain… Maar Maar Kar Likhwa Rahe Hain…Dastkhat Karwa Rahe Hain),” CM Baghel alleged.
The scathing attack by Baghel comes at a time when Enforcement Directorate have been conducting searches at several locations in Raipur, including at the office belonging to Congress leader Ram Gopal Agarwal.

The Congress leader said that they raided 50 places in a month. “How much money and property were seized from it?” CM Baghel asked further.
He also questioned the Central probe agency to come clean on whether the crackdown is being done with an anti-corruption motive or political motive.
“We are against corruption and there should be a probe. But let them [ED] decide whether they are raiding for the purpose of arrest or with a political motive behind?” he told reporters here.
ED on Tuesday reportedly carried out search operations at separate locations in Raipur at the office belonging to a Congress leader Ram Gopal Agarwal at Gore Parisar under Civil Lines police station and residence of industrialist Kamal Sarda at Shankar Nagar in mining and alleged coal levy scam.
CRPF personnel remained present at both locations as the ED officials conducted raids.
He also informed that he has written to Home Minister Amit Shah aprising about the people being threatened by ED officials and had also mentioned it during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier on Tuesday Baghel took a swipe at said the Centre by saying that it seems that ED has no office in BJP-ruled states.
“Industrialists, businessmen, transporters, MLAs, officers, farmers — there is no section left which has not been raided by ED. But it seems there is no ED office in MP, UP, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Karnataka. As long as there was Uddhav Thackeray’s Government in Maharashtra, central agencies were active there. When there was a change of Government there, the agencies became of no use there,” Baghel had said.

Climate change threatening tea sector globally: ITA
[ad_1]

Climate change threatening tea sector globally: ITA (Representative image) Kolkata: Leading planters body Indian Tea Association (ITA) said climate change is threatening the industry globally which is resulting in lower yields and rise in production costs.
A spokesman of ITA said climate change is also threatening the long-term viability of tea industry, which is also causing increasing pest infestations making pesticide residue management surfacing as a major challenge.
To mitigate this, ITA said that the industry needs to adopt a multi-faceted to address the climate change issue by way of sustainable farming practices and reduction in carbon footprint.
In this context, the association maintained the industry involving all the stakeholders to invest in research to come out with mitigating solutions.
There has also been a decline in rainfall and increase in temperature in the tea cultivating regions for the last several years, ITA said.
According to the association, future projections indicate a substantial reduction in suitability in tea cultivation in areas where the crop is grown.
The other major area where work is needed to be done by the industry is that optimisation in the use of chemical fertilisers and greater use of renewable energy.
In the latest data compiled by Tea Board, production in January 2023 in the country was 13.43 million kilogramme as against 16.22 million kilogramme in the same month of last calendar year.

House GOP infighting is threatening their ability to get bills out the door
[ad_1]

Senior Republicans say they ultimately have the votes to pass both the energy and education bills on the floor. But that’s only after an aggressive whip operation by McCarthy’s leadership team, including Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), to assuage concerns about the flood of amendments.
That kind of last-minute scrambling to lock down votes is likely to be the norm for Republican leadership over the next two years, as the party fights to tether its disparate wings together on broad promises the GOP focused on in its push to reclaim the House majority. And none of it will be easy, given that the party has just four votes to spare on any measure coming to the floor — not to mention a Democratic caucus eager to exploit the fissures across the aisle.
Republicans’ worries are particularly acute when it comes to the education measure they have dubbed the “parents’ bill of rights.” A bloc of House moderates, for example, privately raised alarms about a proposed amendment to the education bill from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) that would effectively gut the Department of Education, banning it from handling “any office or program related to elementary or secondary education.”
But just before the bill came to the floor on Thursday, Massie’s amendment got tweaked to mollify those moderates’ concerns.
The GOP’s balancing act doesn’t apply only to amendments. House Republicans are facing headwinds on another major priority: how to frame their underlying bill designed to address boosting security at the U.S.-Mexico border.
On one side, there’s Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who’s pushing a bill to severely restrict migration into the U.S. But on the other side are Reps. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), Mario Diaz Balart (R-Fla.) and their allies — who are more moderate on the issue and fear Roy’s bill could ultimately bar asylum claims.
Roy and Gonzales’ feud has appeared to devolve from policy disagreements to personal grudges, enough so that GOP leadership has spoken to both Texans to try to smooth other matters, according to one senior House Republican who was granted anonymity to speak freely about internal conversations.
And with that border bill in flux, so too is the Judiciary Committee’s long-anticipated hearing on it.
Roy, who sits on Judiciary, said he still expects the panel to take up his bill next week.
“There have been some conversations about figuring out timing. But look, the bill’s been ready. It continues to be ready. We ought to bring it up next week,” Roy said in an interview. While he declined to speak about his conversations with Gonzales, he said he believed GOP leaders would ultimately back him.
“I expect leadership to get fully behind it, and do what they need to do,” Roy said. “I expect we’ll vote on it next week. This is why leadership gets paid the big bucks. It’s their game now.”
While Roy and Gonzales have seemingly hit pause on their recent Twitter brawling, Republicans are skeptical that the two have closed the gap on their policy differences.
“I don’t think it changed anything. I mean, they are on different ends of the spectrum,” the senior House Republican said, adding that one possible solution getting discussed is to pursue “separate bills, and see which one has more support.”
Gonzales indicated that his colleague was correct, declining to confirm that leadership has intervened in his dispute with Roy and responding: “I try not to waste my time with people that try to waste my time.”
“Look, I have spent a lot of time being a reasonable actor in this whole deal. And I’m dealing with people that aren’t reasonable actors,” Gonzales added. “So guess what? The rules of the game have changed and the border security package that’s in Homeland Security has a long way to go before it gets my support.”
This undesirable option comes as the timeline to move on border policy is narrowing, with Republicans saying they need to start moving. The more pressing matter, though, is the GOP’s education bill, which will hit the floor later Thursday.
Days before that floor debate, McCarthy and his leadership team privately fielded concerns from multiple conference members about possible “poison pill” amendments, such as those relating to LGBTQ students or banning books. Some of those Republicans were under pressure from groups like the National Education Association, the nation’s largest teachers union, which opposes the “parents’ bill of rights” proposal and supports some centrist GOP lawmakers.
Another House Republican, this one closely allied with leadership, said members threatened a potential “jail break” before leadership addressed worries among various members had that the bill would disrupt the principle of federalism. This GOP member said leadership “substantially” reduced members’ concerns, particularly by telling them that the bill was designed to give parents information about theoretical rights rather than to directly interfere in local matters.
“Leadership has been aggressive in beating back the substantial concerns members had about federalism,” this Republican said, also addressing internal discussions candidly on condition of anonymity.
As the vote nears, GOP leaders believe they have resolved many of their internal concerns with the roughly 20 amendments from both parties that are expected to receive floor votes.
Still, Republicans will be watching a pair of amendments closely, both from Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.): One states that parents must be informed if a school’s athletic programs allow transgender girls to play on a gender identity-aligned sports team, while the other requires parents to be informed if a transgender girl is allowed to use gender identity-aligned bathrooms.
