‘I have not threatened anyone…’: BJP leader on hatching plot to kill Kharge

Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Manikanta Rathod on Saturday termed the allegations made by the Congress as “false” after the grand old party alleged that a plot is being hatched to murder their party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and his entire family.
While talking to reporters, Rathod said, “I was very surprised. Congress is scared of losing the election. So that’s why they’re making such false allegations. I have registered a complaint against Congress.”
“The videos that are being circulated by Congress on social media are false and I have not threatened anyone,” he added.

Congress on Saturday alleged that a “sinister and “ugly plot” is being “hatched” by the BJP to “kill” its party President Mallikarjun Kharge and his family.
At a press conference in Bengaluru today the Congress played an audio clip, claiming that the BJP candidate from Chittapur Manikanth Rathod used derogatory language for Kharge and could be heard talking about eliminating him and his family.
“BJP leaders are now hatching a plot to murder Mallikarjun Kharge and his family members. This is now clear from the recording of BJP’s candidate from Chittapur who also happens to be the blue-eyed boy of PM Modi and chief minister Bommai,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.
“I know the prime minister will remain mute, and so will Karnataka police and the Election Commission of India. But people of Karnataka will not remain mute and will give a befitting reply” he said.
Pawan Khera was also present at the Congress briefing.

As per a Congress statement, “the brazen hatred of the BJP towards Kannadigas is manifesting itself into a ‘Murder Plot’ to kill Karnataka’s Son of the Soil, Kharge”.
It added: “The Prime Minister and the BJP leadership remain “mute” as “assassination plot” brews”.
Manikanth Rathod Rathod was arrested on November 13, 2022, for allegedly threatening Priyank Kharge, who is the Congress candidate in Chittapur, with murder and was later, released on bail.
In a media conference then, he had openly expressed his readiness to shoot down Priyank Kharge.
“Intimidated by the all-round blessing of Kannadigas being showered on the Congress Party and facing a complete rout in the ensuing assembly elections, BJP and its leadership are now resorting to hatching a “murder plot” to kill AICC President, Mallikarjun Kharge, his wife and the entire family. This is clear from the audio recording of BJP Candidate from Chittapur, Manikanta Rathod, who also happens to be the ‘blue-eyed boy’ of PM Narendra Modi and PM Basavaraj Bommai,” read the Congress statement.
“On May 2, BJP MLA and General Secretary, Madan Dilawar wished “death” for Mallikarjun Kharge and said “Congress President is 80 years old; God can take him away any time”. Now BJP leaders are openly plotting the assassination of Mallikarjun Kharge, his wife and the entire family,” the Congress Party alleged in the statement.
As per the Congress statement, the frustration and desperation of the BJP and its leadership have now reached dangerous proportions.
“Instead of presenting a vision of development for Karnataka, the pathetic state of the BJP is that they coin one ugly polarising issue a day to somehow save their skins from answering for the 40 per cent Corruption. Even these abusive and divisive tactics of the BJP are sinking without a trace. Now, they are using assassination plots as their last weapon in their armoury,” alleged the Congress.
As per the Congress statement, “Of course, PM Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Karnataka Police and the Election Commission will play “mute” on this sinister conspiracy to kill AICC President and his family”.
“The only befitting reply by 6.5 crore Kannadigas to this nefarious and sinister murder plot is to decimate this murderous thought process of the BJP in the ensuing state elections,” read the Congress statement.

Vital supplies dwindle, healthcare system threatened in Sudan amid unrest: UN

Khartoum: Amid the ongoing unrest in Sudan, people are running out of food, fuel and other vital supplies, and the healthcare system is in danger of collapse, UN humanitarians said.
“We desperately need a humanitarian pause so that wounded and sick civilians can reach hospitals,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
“People in the capital Khartoum have been unable to safely leave their homes to buy food and other essentials for days now.”

OCHA reported on a severely hampered relief-response system and called for a halt to attacks against aid workers and looting of humanitarian facilities, reports Xinhua news agency.
It said that humanitarian actors must be able to carry out their work safely, and aid agencies must be able to move staff and replenish critical supplies safely.
“We are worried that Sudan’s health care system could completely collapse,” the UN humanitarians said. “Hospitals need additional staff, supplies, and blood.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) listed 16 hospitals across Sudan, including capital Khartoum, were forced to shut down due to attacks.
A further 16 hospitals, including in Darfur states, could close soon due to staff fatigue and lack of supplies, said the WHO.

The fighting that erupted on the morning of April 15 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Kharotum has so far killed about 270 people and injured more than 2,600 others, with gunfire and explosions still heard across the capital city.
The violence, which is a result of a bloody tussle for power between Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF head Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, has also spread to other areas in the country, including in Darfur to the west.
As a result of the unrest, thousands of civilians have fled Khartoum and foreign nations are trying to evacuate their citizens, amid a sixth day of fierce fighting.
“We condemn all attacks on health personnel, facilities and ambulances — which are putting more lives at risk,” said OCHA.
“They are flagrant violations of international law, and they must stop now.”

Islamabad: The US threatened to bomb Pakistan “back to the Stone Age” after the 9/11 terror attacks if then President General Pervez Musharraf did not cooperate with America’s war on Afghanistan.
In his memoir ‘In the Line of Fire’, Musharraf wrote that the threat was delivered by the tough-talking assistant secretary of state, Richard Armitage, in conversations with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief who was in Washington on a visit at the time of the 9/11 attack.
“In what has to be most undiplomatic statement ever made, Armitage added to what Colin Powell had said to me and told the (ISI) director general not only that we had to decide whether we were with America or with the terrorists, but that if we chose the terrorists, then we should be prepared to be bombed back to the Stone Age,” Musharraf wrote, explaining the situation he faced after the twin tower attack.
He said this was a shockingly barefaced threat, but it was obvious that the United States had decided to hit back, and hit back hard.
Defending his move to join the US-led War on Terror in Afghanistan, Musharraf said that his “decision was based on the well-being of my people and the best interest of my country.” “I war-gamed the United States as an adversary. There would be violent and angry reactions if we didn’t support the United States. Thus the question was: if we do not join them, can we confront them and withstand the onslaught? The answer was no, we could not…” he wrote.
He said, however, the benefits of supporting the United States were many.
Armitage later disputed the language used, but he did not deny that Pakistan was put on notice to help America’s war effort.
Gen Musharraf wrote in his book that on September 13, 2001, the US ambassador to Pakistan, Wendy Chamberlain, brought him a set of seven demands, including blanket overflight and landing rights.

Musharraf said that he balked at some of the US demands such as turning over border posts and bases to US forces.
“How could we allow the United States blanket overflight and landing rights without jeopardizing our strategic assets? I offered only a narrow flight corridor that was far from any sensitive areas,” he wrote.
Pakistan abandoned its support for the Taliban government in Kabul and allowed US overflights of Pakistan.

Putin has never threatened me, Germany’s Scholz says

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Russian President Vladimir Putin has never threatened him or Germany, following claims by Boris Johnson that Putin threatened the former U.K. prime minister with a missile strike.
“Putin didn’t threaten me or Germany” in the phone conversations the chancellor has had with the Russian leader, Scholz told German newspaper Bild in an interview published Sunday.
In a British documentary that aired last week, Johnson revealed that Putin threatened him in a long phone call in February 2022 just before Russia invaded Ukraine. “He said ‘Boris, I don’t want to hurt you but, with a missile, it would only take a minute’ — something like that,” Boris said in the documentary, referring to Putin.
Johnson said he took the Russian leader’s threat to be “playing along” with attempts to get him to negotiate over Ukraine. The Kremlin has denied any threat.
Pushed in the Bild interview on whether Scholz had also received similar threats during phone calls with the Russian leader, the chancellor said “no.”
In his phone calls with Putin, “I make it very clear to Putin that Russia has sole responsibility for the war,” Scholz said. “In our telephone conversations, our very different positions on the war in Ukraine become very clear,” he said.
The chancellor also denied that Germany’s decision to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine was a threat to Russia.
He said that Germany is delivering battle tanks to Ukraine, along with other allies including the U.S., so that Kyiv “can defend itself.”

“This joint approach prevents an escalation of the war,” Scholz said.
Scholz’s comments come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that “the situation is getting tougher” on the front lines of the war in the east of the country. Moscow is throwing in “more and more of its forces to break our defenses. Now, it is very difficult in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, near Lyman, and other directions,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address late Saturday.
The U.K. Ministry of Defense said on Sunday that Bakhmut “is increasingly isolated” following Russian advances in the area. “The two main roads into the city for Ukrainian defenders are likely now both threatened by direct fire, following the Russian advances,” the ministry said in a tweet.
As battles rage in eastern Ukraine, an early mediator between Russia and Ukraine at the start of the war — former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett who served for just six months last year — revealed that Putin early in the invasion had promised not to kill Zelenskyy. In an interview with the Associated Press published Sunday, Bennett said that during a visit to Moscow in March 2022 he asked Putin if the Kremlin was planning to try to kill the Ukrainian leader.
“He said ‘I won’t kill Zelenskyy.’ I then said to him ‘I have to understand that you’re giving me your word that you won’t kill Zelenskyy.’ He said ‘I’m not going to kill Zelenskyy,’” Bennett told the AP. Bennett said that after his meeting, he called Zelenskyy to inform him of Putin’s comments.
The Kremlin has previously denied Ukrainian claims that Russia intended to assassinate Zelenskyy.

Lawsuit threatened as nonprofit reconfigures African American studies course rejected in Florida

“If the governor allows the College Board to present AP African American studies in classrooms across the state of Florida, then we will feel no need to file this historic lawsuit,” Crump told reporters at the Capitol. “However, if he rejects the free flow of ideas and suppresses African American studies, then we’re prepared to take this controversy all the way to the United States Supreme Court.”
As the latest crackdown on how race is taught in Florida’s schools, state education officials earlier this month rejected the College Board’s African American studies course that is being offered at more than 60 schools across the country as a pilot program, contending that it “significantly lacks educational value.”
DeSantis said that he supports denying high school students access to the course because its lessons delve too far into political agendas, broaching topics such as queer studies and abolishing prisons. But the decision by Florida’s Department of Education faced swift backlash in the state and beyond, drawing criticism from academics, advocacy groups and liberal policymakers including the Biden administration, which said that blocking the course was “incomprehensible.”
On the heels of issues raised by the DeSantis administration, the College Board, responsible for administering standardized tests like the SATs, on Tuesday signaled it will release an updated “official” framework for the African American studies course on Feb. 1. The organization, after developing the course for a decade, said in a statement that the new-look course “incorporates” feedback gathered throughout the pilot phase.
College Board has not explained, however, if that feedback includes scrapping the lessons flagged by Florida officials, such as pieces on “Black Queer Studies,” advocacy for reparations, activism and intersectionality, which is a piece of critical race theory.
Florida’s education department counted the organization’s statement as a win regardless, one that officials claim will benefit students across the country. The state will review the updated program and gauge if the prohibited lessons are removed to ensure that the organization is not using “an academic course as a gateway for indoctrination and a political agenda,” according to the Florida Department of Education.
“We are glad the College Board has recognized that the originally submitted course curriculum is problematic, and we are encouraged to see the College Board express a willingness to amend,” Alex Lanfranconi, director of communications for the Florida Department of Education, said in a statement. “AP courses are standardized nationwide, and as a result of Florida’s strong stance against identity politics and indoctrination, students across the country will consequentially have access to an historically accurate, unbiased course.”
Florida’s decision to block the course follows a concerted effort by state Republicans to regulate how race is taught in local classrooms. Under DeSantis, the state Education Department has rejected math textbooks over “impermissible” content, including teachings on critical race theory — something that Florida banned in education, along with the 1619 Project, through official action by its Board of Education.

At the rally Wednesday in Tallahassee, Crump announced his intentions to possibly sue the DeSantis administration on behalf of three Leon County students who would be unable to take the African American studies course. He was joined by Democratic lawmakers and supporters who labeled the course rejection a “relentless political witch hunt” and called for Florida to make more efforts to lead lessons about African American history.
Crump, who received a degree from Florida State University in Tallahassee, has previously represented the families of George Floyd and Trayvon Martin.
Florida law requires public schools to teach students about the history of African Americans, including the “enslavement experience,” and steer them to develop an “understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping on individual freedoms.” But the College Board lessons, according to DeSantis, are “wrong side of the line for Florida standards.”
“By rejecting the African American history pilot program, Ron DeSantis has clearly demonstrated that he wants to dictate whose story does and doesn’t belong,” said House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa). “Are we really OK with Ron DeSantis deciding what’s acceptable for America’s students across the country about Black history?”

Allahabad HC grants bail to man who threatened to demolish Gyanvapi

Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has approved the anticipatory bail plea of Vishwa Hindu Sena general secretary, Digvijay Choubey, who had threatened to demolish the disputed Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi.
Besides approving the bail plea, the court also invoked a ban on his arrest. Digvijay Choubey had threatened to “make the condition of Gyanvapi like Babri”.
However, the anticipatory bail has been granted until the police file the chargesheet.
The bail plea was heard by Justice Subhash Chand Sharma.
In August 2022, Choubey had announced to perform religious rituals on the disputed premises. He also threatened to demolish the disputed premises. He was arrested after a case was filed against him at the Bhelupur police station in Varanasi.
