SRINAGAR: The government of Jammu and Kashmir is all set to construct a massive amusement park in Srinagar after taking proper references from global and national theme parks.
The Disneyland type amusement park will be spread over 100 acres and will act as a boon for tourism sector in Kashmir
News18 has reported that the Jammu and Kashmir government wants to hire an international renowned consultancy firm to advice it for development of a theme amusement park in Srinagar. The consultant will do a tour of theme parks managed globally by the likes of Disney, Universal and Ramoji, and study the best practices.
The vision behind this is “to catalyse growth in tourism sector and attract tourists from across the globe,” the document accessed by News 18 says.
The site is expected to be the prime location of 100 acres in Srinagar’s Tattoo Ground. JK Directorate of Industries and Commerce will undertake the project and may set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for it, News 18 reported.
The document says the selected consultant in order to gather an understanding of the best practices being adopted by the theme parks across national as well as the global level would prepare a ‘Theme Park Benchmarking Study Report’. For preparing this report, references may be taken from the global and national theme parks.
“To undertake this exercise and prepare a comprehensive study report a team comprising of government officials and a team of three consultants would visit two global and two national theme parks,” the document says.

Most of us have watched James Bond films. And we have also heard the iconic theme tune that introduces Bond to the audience. The tune is full of suspense and foreboding. But not many people know that the memorable tune has its origins in a work of fiction connected with Indian culture. The man who first wrote the tune was a British composer, musician and singer named Monty Norman. He wrote the tune for the very first Bond film titled Dr. No and thereafter it was used, sometimes with slight variations, in every James Bond film.
As the Bond films grew in popularity throughout the world, the tune became one of the most recognised themes on the planet. What makes the James Bond theme so appealing is its ability to evoke a sense of excitement and danger. The pounding rhythm and gradually soaring melody create a sense of excitement and anticipation, hinting at the fast paced action sequences that are to follow on the screen.
Monty Norman has said that the James Bond tune was inspired by “Good Sign, Bad Sign”, a song that he himself composed for a musical stage adaptation of V.S. Naipaul’s novel A House For Mr. Biswas. The novel was set among the Indian community in Trinidad. In brief, the story was about a man named Mohun Biswas, an Indian living in Trinidad, who has married into a wealthy family but ends up being dominated by his in-laws.
When Monty Norman was approached to compose a song for the stage show of the novel, the composer decided to rely heavily on an Indian theme and ambience. Since the story was about the Indian community settled in Trinidad, he composed a tune with a very heavy Indian influence and sound complete with sitar and tabla. The song was titled Good Sign, Bad Sign.
Later, when Monty Norman was roped in to compose the theme for the first James Bond film, he suddenly had a bright idea of presenting the same tune with a few minor changes.
But even after the changes, Monty Norman’s tune sounded too Indian and the producers felt that it may not be appreciated by a worldwide audience. So they requested another composer named John Barry Prendergast to rearrange the tune. So John Barry made a few more changes and it clicked. It was then included as the theme in the first Bond film titled Dr.No starring Sean Connery and Ursula Andress. The film became a blockbuster and Connery shot to fame as the master spy James Bond, secret agent 007.
After the runaway success of Dr.No, Barry was hired to compose and perform eleven of the next fourteen James Bond films and he did so with great success. So that is how a tune which was originally based on Indian ragas became one of the most popular theme tunes in the Hollywood film industry and was also recognised and welcomed by millions of James Bond fans across the world.
Floriculture Department discusses modalities with SAKURA
Srinagar, Feb 28 (GNS): The summer capital ‘Srinagar’ would soon have a splendid Cherry Theme Garden on the pattern of Japanese Sakura with all the modalities being finalised in this regard.
This was revealed during a virtual meeting of officers of Floriculture Department with the Japanese authorities and Union Ministry of External Affairs.
Professor A K Chawla Advisor (Japan) East Asia Division MEA mediated the meeting.
The meeting had elaborate deliberation on various issues regarding the project like procurement of planting material from Japan and technical guidance.
“Cherry Theme Garden’ is a Rs 10 crore project, an extension plan for Tulip Garden, Srinagar to make it more attractive and magnificent for the visitors. The project is being facilitated by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
While highlighting broad contours of the project, Commissioner Secretary Floriculture, Skeikh Fayaz Ahmad, said that there will be requirement of about 2500 cherry trees in the first instance and certain varieties have been identified that will suit our place. He said that the department will be preferably exporting plants in a phased manner to ascertain the behaviour of the plants and later go for expansion.
He also informed that a 3-member team of officers will visit Japan to get a first hand experience of the plants and will make sure the best plant material is exported for the Cherry Theme Garden in Srinagar.
Commissioner Secretary added that Jammu and Kashmir has huge potential for floriculture activities with modern farming technologies as game changer for J&K’s economy.
President Sakai International Interchange Association, Tadashi Nishiyama (Japanese Sakura Expert) while answering various queries, suggested that the government of Jammu and Kashmir should send them variety wise total number of plant material required for the proposed garden. He also assured to provide all possible technical help in this regard.(GNS)
