Thomas’ longtime friend acknowledges — but defends — Harlan Crow tuition payments

The real estate magnate footed the $6,000-per-month bill for Hidden Lake Academy, a private school in Georgia, for one year, the ProPublica report said, and then paid for tuition at another boarding school in Virginia. It’s unclear how much Crow put down, but if he paid for all four years at the two schools, the bill would be more than $150,000, the report found.

“Let’s be clear about what is supposedly scandalous now: Justice Thomas and his wife devoted twelve years of their lives to taking in and caring for a beloved child — who was not their own — just as Justice Thomas’s grandparents had done for him,” Paoletta said in the statement.

Paoletta called the fresh accusations of wrongdoing by the justice “malicious,” and said that “this story is another attempt to manufacture a scandal about Justice Thomas.”

The ProPublica report included a statement from Crow’s office in response to their questions: “Harlan Crow has long been passionate about the importance of quality education and giving back to those less fortunate, especially at-risk youth,” the statement said. “It’s disappointing that those with partisan political interests would try to turn helping at-risk youth with tuition assistance into something nefarious or political.”

Thomas’ ties with Crow have come under a microscope ever since ProPublica reported last month that Crow had financed luxury vacations for the justice for over two decades, which Thomas did not report.

  • Dem secretaries of state tap former Beasley manager as new committee executive director

Dem secretaries of state tap former Beasley manager as new committee executive director

    [ad_1]

    230503 travis brimm courtesy

Brimm last managed North Carolina Democrat Cheri Beasley’s 2022 Senate run, and also worked for then-presidential candidate Joe Biden as North Carolina state director for the 2020 primaries. He has also previously managed other congressional races in and outside the Tar Heel State, and worked at the DCCC.

Secretary of state races received an unprecedented amount of attention last year when candidates across the country allied with former President Donald Trump ran to be states’ chief election officials. Many of those candidates ran as part of a coalition, with promises to remake the elections system under the false pretense that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

In the five core battleground states that elected secretaries, those election deniers all lost — one in a Republican primary to an incumbent secretary, and four in a general election to Democrats. DASS raised over $30 million for the 2022 cycle — roughly 7.5 times what the committee raised for the 2018 and 2022 cycles — and other liberal outside groups poured in millions more to win races in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota and Nevada. A lone disappointment for the party was in Georgia, where Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger cruised to reelection after defeating a Trump-aligned candidate in a primary. Raffensperger famously denied efforts to overturn election results in Georgia.

If election deniers had won, they would have been in a position of overseeing the 2024 election in key battleground states. And despite their losses, many of those candidates did not fade away: Kristina Karamo is now the chair of the Michigan Republican Party, while Nevada’s Jim Marchant announced a Senate campaign earlier this week.

The 2022 elections were one of dramatic expansion for DASS, which had only one full-time staffer at the start of the cycle. Brimm declined to share a specific fundraising or staffing target going forward, but he said: “early benchmarks are making sure that we’re carrying it forward.”

Brimm said a goal of his this cycle is to make sure the committee isn’t “writing off any candidates … making sure that we’re challenging every available race on the board.”

Compared to the midterms — where 25 states elected a chief election official — the next two years will be comparatively sparse. Three red-leaning states are electing chief election officials this year — Republican incumbents Michael Adams of Kentucky and Michael Watson of Mississippi are seeking reelection, and there is an open race in Louisiana.

There are just seven secretaries on the ballot next year, including Washington and Oregon — which despite their overall blue tilt, only saw their secretaries’ office flip to Democrats in 2021. And Shemia Fagan, Oregon’s secretary of state, is resigning from office effective next week after Willamette Week broke the news that she had a consulting contract with a cannabis company while her office was auditing the state’s marijuana program.

But 2026 will be another big year for the committee. Democratic incumbents Adrian Fontes of Arizona, Cisco Aguilar of Nevada and Steve Simon of Minnesota will be eligible to run again, as will Georgia’s Raffensperger. Michigan will be an open-seat race, with Democratic incumbent Jocelyn Benson term-limited. Brimm said he would serve through the 2026 midterms.

“With a four year approach, there are a variety of different pieces that I think are going to be compelling for people to continue to pay attention and continue to support not just DASS as an organization, but also our candidates and incumbents,” he said. “The work of secretaries of states in administering elections is pretty damn important in presidential years.”

Aviation Technician, Injured in Kishtwar Helicopter Crash, Succumbs; 2 Pilots ‘Safe’

    [ad_1]

Kishtwar, May 4: An Aviation technician, among the three members on board a helicopter witnessing a crash in Kishtwar Thursday afternoon, has succumbed to his injuries, official sources said.

They told GNS that the Aviation Technician Pabballa Anil was evacuated from the site of crash alongside the two pilots to Command Hospital Udhampur. “The injured technician succumbed shortly after”, they said adding the two pilots are safe and are responding well to the treatment.

Earlier in a statement, a defence spokesperson said that three army personnel, including two pilots and a technician, sustained injuries after a helicopter they were on board apparently made a rough landing along the banks of Marua river in Kishtwar region this morning.

“At about 1115 hours on 04 May 2023, an Army Aviation ALH Dhruv helicopter on an operational mission made a precautionary landing on the banks of Marua river in the Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir. As per inputs, the pilots had reported a technical fault to the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) and proceeded for a precautionary landing. Due to the undulating ground, undergrowth and unprepared landing area, the helicopter apparently made a hard landing”, reads a defence official statement adding an immediate rescue operation was launched and Army rescue teams reached the site.

“Two pilots and a technician were on board. All three injured personnel have been evacuated to Command Hospital, Udhampur.”

“A Court of Inquiry has been ordered”, reads the statement adding further details are being ascertained. (GNS)

Kremlin ‘lying’ about U.S. involvement in Moscow drone strikes, Kirby says

    [ad_1]

    russia kremlin drones 03382

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied the accusation, and U.S. officials said they had no advanced knowledge of the attacks. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that he’d take any claims coming from the Kremlin with a “large shaker of salt.”

“We don’t attack Putin or Moscow,” Zelenskyy told the Nordic broadcaster TV2 during a trip to Finland on Wednesday. “We fight on our territory. We’re defending our villages and cities. We don’t have enough weapons for these.”

Peskov reportedly said during a press conference earlier Thursday that “attempts to disown this, both in Kyiv and in Washington, are, of course, absolutely ridiculous. We know very well that decisions about such actions, about such terrorist attacks, are made not in Kyiv but in Washington.

“Kyiv only does what it is told to do,” Peskov said.

Kirby said on MSNBC that the U.S. doesn’t encourage or enable Ukraine to strike within Russian borders, saying that “we certainly don’t dictate the terms by which they defend themselves or the operations they conduct.”

Senior administration officials told POLITICO Wednesday they are working to confirm whether the suspected strike was ordered by Kyiv, conducted by a rogue pro-Ukraine group, or a false flag operation by Russia.

During a surprise trip to the Netherlands on Thursday, Zelenskyy reiterated his plea for a special tribunal to hold Putin accountable for war crimes.

“We all want to see a different Vladimir here in The Hague,” Zelenskyy said. “The one who deserves to be sentenced for these criminal actions right here, in the capital of international law.”

The International Criminal Court, which is based in the Hague, in March issued an international arrest warrant against Putin over the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia since the war began. While the court doesn’t have the authority to prosecute the crime of aggression, Zelenskyy said the rules need to change.

“If we want true justice, we should not look for excuses and should not refer to the shortcomings of the current international law but make bold decisions that will correct that shortcomings that unfortunately exist in international law,” Zelenskyy said in a speech.

  • JK Government Increases DA For Employees Under Seventh Pay Commission

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday issued a new order regarding the payment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to its employees. According to the government order, all regular government employees under the 7th Pay Commission will now be eligible for an increased DA of 42% of their basic pay, effective from January 1, 2023. This revised rate is a 4% increase from the previous rate of 38% of the basic pay.

First, let’s understand what Dearness Allowance is. It is an allowance given by the government to its employees to offset the impact of inflation and rising prices of goods and services. Essentially, it’s a way to help employees keep up with the cost of living. The amount of DA varies from state to state and is calculated as a percentage of the employee’s basic pay.

So, what does this mean for the employees? Suppose an employee’s basic pay is Rs. 20,000. Under the old rate of 38%, they would receive a DA of Rs. 7,600 (38% of Rs. 20,000). But with the new rate of 42%, they will receive a DA of Rs. 8,400 (42% of Rs. 20,000). This extra money will help the employees cope with the increased expenses due to inflation and rising costs of living.

The order also specifies that the term ‘Basic Pay’ in the revised pay structure means the pay drawn in the prescribed level in the Pay Matrix as per the 7th Pay Commission recommendations, excluding any other type of pay like special pay. This means that only the regular salary of the employees will be taken into consideration while calculating the DA.

Additionally, the order mentions that the arrears on account of the additional instalment of DA with effect from January 2023 shall be paid in cash in the month of May 2023 and shall form a part of salary from May 2023 onwards. This means that the employees will receive the extra money they were supposed to get from January 2023 in May 2023, along with their regular salary.

The order also states that the payment on account of Dearness Allowance involving fractions of 50 paisa and above may be rounded to the next higher rupee, while the fractions of less than 50 paisa shall be ignored. This means that if the extra money the employees are supposed to receive is more than 50 paisa, it will be rounded up to the nearest rupee, and if it’s less than 50 paisa, it will be ignored.

The order was issued by the General Administration Department under the file number GAD-CORD/113/2021-09-GAD, and the Government Order No: 93-F of 2023.
