Mumbai: Janata Dal (U) President and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will arrive in Mumbai on Thursday morning as part of his Opposition unity efforts, and hold meetings with top Maharashtra leaders, an official said here on Tuesday.

Nitish Kumar will meet Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray over lunch at ‘Matoshri’ in Bandra, before meeting Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar over tea at the latter’s ‘Silver Oaks’ home in south Mumbai.

The JD(U) supremo shall be accompanied by Bihar Legislative Council Chairman Deveshchandra Thakur, and Cooperation Minister Sanjaykumar Jha for the meetings with the Maharashtra leaders, said JD(U) National Secretary, Kapil Patil.

Last fortnight, Thakur had met both Pawar and Thackeray ahead of Nitish Kumar’s plans to visit Maharashtra on May 11.

Continuing his efforts to forge a national front comprising all non-BJP forces, Nitish Kumar has so far met Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Odish CM Navin Patnaik and also former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, said Patil.

The JD(U)’s Maharashtra unit has made elaborate arrangements to welcome Nitish Kumar with thousands of workers set to gather at Bandra and other places.

“Nitish Kumar enjoys a clean image as a good administrator who has brought about a sea-change in Bihar. The women are safe, the youth are confident, and now the nation awaits him,” Patil added.

  • Raj Thackeray urges to protect pre-historic Petroglyphs, opposes refinery plan

Raj Thackeray urges to protect pre-historic Petroglyphs, opposes refinery plan

    [ad_1]

Ratnagiri: Adopting a significant stance, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray on Saturday batted for tourism while opposing the proposed Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd (RRPCL) project coming up in this picturesque region where prehistoric Petroglyphs were discovered.

Addressing a public meeting here, Raj Thackeray said the Petroglyphs found here are still being studied and analysed and as per international norms, no development activities can be carried out in its vicinity.

The astounding Petroglyphs in and around Barsu were discovered in 2012 and have already made it to the Unesco’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites and locals now fear that if the RRPCL comes up here, this pre-historic site would be lost forever, he said as a caution to the Central and state governments.

    MS Education Academy

Interestingly, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray went around the Petroglyphs site along with the Barsu villagers who are opposing the refinery project.

“When the RRPCL project was announced for Barsu, I was very upset. Why can’t such big projects go to Goa or Kerala? The beautiful Konkan is intended only for tourism. Only Konkan tourism is sufficient to support the entire (economy) of Maharashtra,” Raj Thackeray said.

He warned the people of Konkan against selling off their valuable land at cheap rates “to politicians and businessmen who are aware of big projects coming up all around and then make huge profits from your land”.

The MNS chief strongly advised Konkanis that henceforth, if anybody wants to buy out their beautiful and fertile lands, “first ask them what’s the purpose” before parting with it, otherwise “you will have nothing but regrets”.

Raj’s unexpected stance — which could be music to the locals and the Shiv Sena (UBT) — may prove to be jarring for the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party which has been hoping for a partnership with the MNS.

Ironically, during the day, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, visited Barsu where he threw his full lot with the people opposing the refinery project, even as the BJP launched a sharp attack on him.

Referring to the proposed sea-memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj off the Mumbai coast, the MNS chief — estranged cousin of Uddhav Thackeray — also questioned the need to spend over Rs 10,000 crore on the monument planned for the great Maratha warrior-king in the Arabian Sea.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj constructed several sea-forts dotting the Konkan coast. Why can’t the memorial funds be diverted for their upkeep and renovation? That’s our real legacy. Will you leave statues for the future generations to view?” Raj Thackeray demanded.

He also expressed his ire over the long delays for the upcoming Mumbai-Goa highway which has been pending proper completion since 2007 and is a road traveller’s nightmare.

“Why such a long delay? Have you ever questioned your elected representatives? What’s taking so many years for the project to come up? Today, someone told me that the contractors for one of the sections has abandoned it,” Raj Thackerary said in an incredulous tone.

The MNS leader also took potshots at his cousin Uddhav Thackeray, asking why there are differences in his party – Shiv Sena (UBT) – with some opposing and others supporting the refinery plans.

He also accused Uddhav Thackeray of allegedly ‘usurping’ the sprawling former Mayor Bungalow at Dadar west (Mumbai) in the name of the late Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial, and asked whom he had asked for it.

This was Raj Thackeray’s first foray into the Konkan region in several years and he conceded that he “was keen since long to come and discuss the problems of the people here”.

NCP imbroglio won’t derail MVA, asserts Uddhav Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In his first reaction to the ongoing crisis rocking the Nationalist Congress Party since three days, Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray said that it will not affect the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), three-party alliance comprising even the Congress.

“I don’t think it will have any impact on the MVA… Even from my side we shall not do anything that could create cracks in the alliance,” declared Thackeray while interacting briefly with the mediapersons.

When asked whether he had spoken to NCP President Sharad Pawar to reconsider his move to step down as party chief, Thackeray shot back in lighter vein: “Who am I to advise Sharad Pawara? What if he doesn’t heed my advice…”

    MS Education Academy

The ex-CM pointed out that Pawar Saheb has the right to take his decisions and each worker of his party (NCP) has the right to convey their reaction to their leadership, and “let’s wait for the NCP committee meeting of tomorrow.”

On his planned Saturday visit to the protest-hit Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd project coming up with Arab help at a cost of Rs 3 lakh-crore, Thackeray said that he is going to meet the people of Barsu and surrounding villagers who are opposing the plant.

“I am not going there to see the strength of the Shiv Sena (UBT) or the Bharatiya Janata Party, but to meet and interact with the local population, hear out their problems or grievances. Unless all their apprehensions are cleared, the project should not be pushed through,” reiterated Thackeray.

To a query on Pawar’s adverse comments in his autobiography, ‘Lok Majhe Sangati’, Thackeray guardedly said that he had nothing to say as “my work as CM is before the whole world and the people of the state who are like a family.”

Nevertheless, Sena (UBT) Chief Spokesperson and MP Sanjay Raut has stated that he would reply to Pawar’s observations on Thackeray through the ‘Saamana Group’ soon.

  • Mumbai’s prime real estate given away for Bullet Train, alleges Thackeray

Mumbai’s prime real estate given away for Bullet Train, alleges Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena-UBT President and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday accused the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance of handing over prime real estate, “worth like gold”, in the Bandra Kurla Complex for the Bullet Train project.

He said that when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was in power, they had halted the BKC land for the Bullet Train terminus, but as soon as the government of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis came to power (June 2022), they gave it away.

“How many of you are going to travel from Mumbai to Ahmedabad in the Bullet Train daily? How many will come from Gujarat to Maharashtra in that train…? Yet, the land of Mumbai valued like gold was given away for the project… Nobody knows how many ‘khokhas’ (slang for crores of rupees) exchanged hands?” thundered Thackeray.

    MS Education Academy

He was addressing the MVA’s third massive rally at the BKC Grounds in the presence of the top leaders of the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena-UBT, as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming civic polls and next year’s Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

These included Nana Patole, Jayant Patil, Bhai Jagtap, Ajit Pawar, Ambadas Danve, Balasaheb Thorat, Ashok Chavan, Sushma Andhare, Dr. Jitendra Awhad, Chhagan Bhujbal, Naseem Khan, Subhash Desai, Aslam Shaikh, Sunil Kedar, besides Thackeray’s family members, wife Rashmi and their sons Aditya and Tejas.

Thackeray said that similar was the case with the Mumbai Metro carshed which the MVA did not allow in Aarey Colony for the city’s environmental concerns and proposed the Kanjurmarg site which could help the Metro railway expansion to distance places in Thane-Raigad.

“However, the minute they came to power they reversed the decision.. Even the Central government which had blocked our proposal for the Kanjurmarg land in the court, suddenly gave up their claims. But now, after the Aarey Colony, they were compelled to seek even the Kanjurmarg land (15 hectares) for the project… In the process, Mumbai is the loser,” the ex-CM pointed out.

The Sena-UBT chief attacked the state government for its series of advertisements splurging public money and said that no government in the state had resorted to so much publicity.

“This is not your money. It is the taxpayers’ money that is being blown off to hide your shortcomings. If you want to advertise, use the BJP’s 2014 election campaign against inflation, unemployment, etc… it will be valid today,” declared Thackeray, targeting Shinde-Fadnavis.

Touching upon the agitation against the Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicls Ltd (RPPL) project, the ex-CM said that he had suggested the land around Barsu in Rajapur taluka) for the mega-venture with Arab collaboration.

“Nowhere did I say in my letter that the people should be oppressed in the name of the project without their consent. What is the government doing now? I will go to Barsu on Saturday and speak with the villagers. If they don’t want the project we are with them,” said Thackeray.

Targetting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that “he (Modi) said Congress abused him 91 times – but what about the abuses that your people give to my family… we shall also give you a fitting reply,” and wondreed where is the culture that is taught at the BJP’s Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini in Thane.

He warned that the BJP will not escape the “curse” of the tribal victims of Palghar or those who lost their lives in Navi Mumbai last month in the scorching heat, and called upon the people to vote out the saffron party in the civic, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to save the country.

Patil, Dr. Awhad, Patole, Chavan, Aditya Thackeray, Jagtap, and other leaders also made fiery speeches, how central agencies are let loose against the Opposition parties and leaders, and predicted the downfall of the BJP government starting from the Karnataka elections next week.

Why is PM Modi silent when his party people abuse me: Uddhav Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Monday asked why PM Narendra Modi is silent on the abuse hurled against him and his family members.

“Modi said Congress abused him 91 times. But why are you silent when your people abuse me and my family,” Thackeray said, addressing the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi rally in Mumbai.

“Their abusive language shows their culture,” he said. “I am asking the RSS: do you accept such an offspring (BJP),” he added.

    MS Education Academy

Thackeray referred to the criticism he has faced for aligning with Congress and NCP.

“When I go with Congress and NCP, they (BJP) claim that I have forsaken Hindutva. If that is the case, then what about (RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to a mosque,” he said.

Thackeray said he will visit Barsu, the site of the proposed refinery in Ratnagiri district, on May 6. “I will go there and talk to the locals. How can you stop me? This is not POK,” he said.

“Yes, I suggested the site for the refinery when I was the CM, but my letter (to Modi) did not specify that police should fire on protesters,” he said.

Slamming the government for shifting mega projects from Maharashtra, Thackeray said, “we will make pieces of anyone who tries to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.”

Thackeray also flayed the Modi government for targeting opposition leaders by using agencies like ED and CBI.

“If you have guts, send ED to the house the Chinese president, whose country has encroached upon a huge area of India,” he said.

On a sarcastic note, he suggested that industrialist Gautam Adani’s life story must be part of school curriculum so that people of India can learn how to become rich like him.

‘Doesn’t know what is Hindutva’: Uddhav Thackeray makes all-out attack on BJP

    [ad_1]

Jalgaon: In a strong, no-holds-barred attack, Shiv Sena-UBT President Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that ruling Bharatiya Janata Party “doesn’t know what is Hindutva”.

“Hindutva is not a matter of selfishness, but a nationalist. The BJP doesn’t understand what Hindutva is. Their Hindutva is centred around cow and gomutra (cow-urine). Cow slaughter is banned in one state but not in others… This is their Hindutva,” said Thackeray, as the BJP fights the Karnataka elections on its pet-theme.

Addressing a massive rally in Pachora, Jalgaon this evening, Thackeray denied the charge that he had left Hindutva, saying that after he took the oath as Chief Minister in November 2019, all religions were treated equally.

    MS Education Academy

“I have gone with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)… I have not left Hindutva and will never leave it… show me one instance which made you feel that I had discarded Hindutva,” he asked.

Targetting the BJP, he said that “crushing other people and parties” with the support of central investigating agencies or letting loose goons to attack women leaders of opposing political parties “is not our Hindutva”.

“People ask me – is the BJP a challenge before us? I say the BJP is not a challenge. The real challenge before us is how shall we undo the damage that the BJP is inflicting on the country,” he asserted.

He questioned “how is it possible that all corrupt people who join your party (BJP) suddenly become clean”, and said that the BJP hounds anybody opposing or daring them.

Training guns on the Shiv Sena of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Thackeray said that “seeing this massive gathering, even Pakistan would have said which is the real Shiv Sena… only the Modi-appointed Election Commission of India (ECI) could not realise it”.

“Some traitors and thieves (Shinde) believed that they are the Shiv Sena. ‘Arre hatt..!’ Look at this sea of humanity… Your throng will burn down soon… There were natural disasters and even coronavirus in Maharashtra which we tackled effectively, but now this government itself is a calamity for the state,” declared Thackeray amid loud cheers and applause.

He reiterated that the BJP must declare now whether they going to fight the next elections under Shinde’s leadership, and if not then whether the reports are true, that all 48 Lok Sabha seats will be contested by only the BJP.

“The stole the party, they took away the bow and arrow symbol and are trying to steal my father (the late Balasaheb Thackeray). Those who have nothing resort to thieving like this… First you (the voters) elected and put them on the horse, now they deserve to be yanked off their high horse,” thundered Thackeray.

He lauded former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik’s statements on corruption and the Pulwama attacks and how he was asked to keep shut in the matter by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was in the Corbett National Park at that time.

Thackeray also heaped praises on several “brave, mardana Shiv Sainiks” like Sanjay Raut, Rajan Salvi, Nitin Deshmukh and others for not succumbing to the BJP’s pressures through the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax or Central Bureau of Investigation and chose to remain with him, and even spent time in jail.

The Sena-UBT chief threw the gauntlet at the ruling Shiv Sena saying he will be addressing more such rallies all over the state, plus joint public meetings of the MVA.

“You can come with Modi and your stolen bow and arrow. I will confront you with my name… Hold the elections now… we are ready to fight and burn your throne with our flaming torch,” warned Thackeray.

The mammoth rally which got underway around dusk was addressed by other leaders like Leader of Opposition in the Council Ambadas Danve, MP Arvind Sawant, Deputy Leader Sushma Andhare, Vaishali Patil and others.

We will ‘fight for democracy’ in country: Thackeray after meeting with Venugopal

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: After meeting with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that the two parties despite all differences in their ideologies will come together in the “fight for democracy”.

Venugopal on Monday met Thackeray at his ‘Matoshree’ residence in Mumbai, in what can be termed as yet another step in the direction of forming “opposition unity”.

Addressing a press conference, Thackeray said, “First of all, I want to welcome him (Venugopal) here at Matoshree. There are differences in our ideology but it is a democracy and we have to come together with hardly a year left for the election. They (BJP) only want power and we Shiv Sena are here to save democracy”.

    MS Education Academy

He said that the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thakarey) and Congress will come together in the “fight for democracy”.

The former Chief Minister also accused BJP of betrayal.

“We maintained a relationship with the BJP for 25-30 years. But they did not understand who was a friend and who was an opponent. We will together fight for democracy in the country,” he said.

“Last time when BJP chief JP Nadda came to Mumbai, he said that there will be only one party and that is BJP. This is the biggest betrayal to all other parties. The way they tried to finish Shiv Sena and betrayed the party, they are trying to do the same with other parties too,” he said.

KC Venugopal also addressed the press conference and said, “I have requested Uddhav ji to come to Delhi and meet Sonia ji and Rahul”.

Earlier on April 13, as part of efforts to forge opposition unity to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi. During the meeting, discussions centred on the need to talk to other parties and to move together in the fight for various issues concerning people.

On the same day, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav met Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as part of efforts to unite as many opposition parties to take on the BJP.

There is one Shiv Sena, others are traitors: Aditya Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Terming the current Maharashtra government as “highly autocratic, highly dictatorial and opaque”, Yuva Sena president Aaditya Thackeray said on Tuesday that there’s only one Shiv Sena and the others are “gaddars” (traitors).

“They (Eknath Shinde group) have tried to steal everything from us, they’ve tried to steal our party logo and party name. They’re trying to do everything they can. But the fact of the matter is: Someone who has run away with everything can only be tagged as a chor (thief), nothing beyond that,” he said, while interacting with the students of GITAM (Deemed to be University) at its Hyderabad campus, as part of a Changemakers session moderated by Smita Sharma, visiting faculty, Kautilya School of Public Policy.

“It is sad to see that Maharashtra — which was competing amongst the top five states in the Covid times and was one of the top players in terms of investment, tourism, sustainability, urban growth — is now lagging. During our time as MVA government, we saw zero incidence of communal violence, everyone worked together, the state had Rs 6.5 lakh crore as investment coming in, we had multiple MoUs for factories coming up there.

    MS Education Academy

“Today, look at where Maharashtra is. We have an unconstitutional government, which is keeping aside the constitution and running a government which is highly autocratic, highly dictatorial, and opaque. We’re not one of the most attractive states for investment, because of political instability,” said the Shiv Sena-UBT leader and MLA from Mumbai’s Worli.

“At least some people in the past had the guts to call an Emergency an Emergency – Today we’re in an undeclared Emergency. To completely knock out any opposition and alternate voices is troublesome for a country,” he said.

Reaffirming his faith in people and judiciary, Thackeray iterated that it’s very crucial to see which debates we choose for ourselves. “What we engage in our country today is religion vs religion, region vs region — everything apart from the core issues. Are we debating unemployment, inflation, and problems we face as citizens? We’re not debating the right things, we’re fighting over something that happened 50-60 years ago, over the personalities that lived 100 years ago or whether some king/emperor did the right thing. But we are not fighting for the future. What will our future generations think?”

MP Navneet Rana needles Thackeray, proclaims herself as ‘Hindu Sherni’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: On Ram Navami day, independent MP from Amravati, Navneet Ravi Rana attempted to needle her bete-noire, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, here on Thursday.

Almost a year after the famous ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ row which saw Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana cooling their heels in jail, the woman MP on Thursday hit back.

Posters of the actress-turned-politician Navneet Rana proclaiming her as a ‘Hindu Sherni’ (Hindu Tigress) were seen near Thackeray’s home ‘Matoshri’ in Bandra east, Thane, Amravati and other places.

Drawing comparisons with Lord Ram’s 14-year exile, Navneet Rana (37) is shown sporting a saffron colour sari on the posters which said ‘Rajdroh & 14 days in jail’.

She also announced that on April 6 on Hanuman Jayanti Day, a 111-feet tall grand statue of Lord Hanuman would be unveiled in Amravati followed by a mass recital of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ there.

The posters have an image of Lord Ram at the top right corner and photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and her husband Ravi Rana, and one picture of Lord Hanuman’s statue to be inaugurated next month.

Earlier in the morning, Navneet Rana set the tone for Ram Navami celebrations by riding a Bullet motorcycle, sporting a stark black salwar-kurta suit with a bright orange headgear, raising full-throated slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’, several times, while speeding carefree on a deserted road on the power-bike in her hometown.

It may be recalled that last year in April, Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana and their supporters attempted to chant ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ outside Thackeray’s Bandra home, much to the chagrin of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi government then in power.

However, the MVA regime did not permit the Ranas to have their way, they detained the law-makers, arrested them and shunted them to jail amidst a huge row that went on for several days even as the Thackeray government fell after barely three months in June 2022. Later, the Ranas were granted bail by a special court.
