Washington: World Bank presidential nominee Ajay Banga has tested positive for COVID-19 during routine testing in New Delhi where he was travelling on the last leg of his world tour, and is currently quarantining in isolation, the Department of Treasury said Thursday.

India is witnessing a spike in influenza and coronavirus cases in the past two weeks. The country has recorded 1,134 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases increased to 7,026, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

Banga’s New Delhi visit (March 23 and March 24) is the final stop on his three-week global tour that began in Africa before progressing to Europe, Latin America and Asia.

“During routine testing, Ajay Banga tested positive for COVID-19 but remains asymptomatic. In adherence with local guidelines, he is quarantining in isolation,” the Department of Treasury said Thursday afternoon.

While in India, 63-year-old Banga was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman and the Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Treasury said in a previous statement.

India endorsed Banga’s candidacy soon after his nomination was announced.

Since then, a diverse coalition of governments has expressed their support for Banga, including Bangladesh, C te d’Ivoire, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom.

During his global listening tour, Banga met with senior government officials, stakeholders, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and civil society.

Along the way, he has built continuous momentum for his candidacy, gaining the support of advocates, academics, development experts, executives, Nobel Laureates, and former government officials.

If elected to serve, Banga will draw from his experience living and working in emerging markets and his expertise in forging public-private partnerships to mobilise investments and action to confront longstanding challenges.

That includes his efforts at Mastercard to successfully bring 500 million previously unbanked people into the digital economy, as well as its support for 50 million small businesses.

New Delhi logged 84 coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 5.08 per cent on Wednesday, according to data shared by the health department.

The city has seen an increase in the number of fresh Covid infections over the last few days, amid a sharp rise in H3N2 influenza cases in the country.

DRDO successfully tests indigenous power take off shaft on LCA Tejas

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A successful flight-test of power take off (PTO) shaft was conducted on the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas in Bengaluru on Tuesday , the defence ministry said.

The PTO is a critical equipment that transmits power from aircraft engine to gearbox.

The ministry said the maiden successful flight-test of PTO shaft was conducted on LCA Tejas Limited Series Production (LSP)-3 aircraft.

“With this successful test, the DRDO has achieved a greater technological feat by realisation of complex high-speed rotor technology which only few countries have achieved,” it said.

The PTO shaft is indigenously designed and developed by Chennai-based Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

“The PTO shaft, which is a critical component in the aircraft, will support the requirements of future fighter aircraft and their variants and offers competitive cost and reduced time of availability,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

“The PTO shaft was designed with a unique innovative patented ‘Frequency Spanning Technique’ which enables it to negotiate different operating engine speeds,” it said.

“The light weight, high speed, lubrication free PTO shaft transmits higher power between aircraft engine gear box and aircraft mounted accessory gearbox while accommodating misalignments that arise in the drive line,” the ministry added.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the DRDO, public sector undertakings concerned and the industry, saying that the successful realisation of PTO shaft is another major milestone towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat stated that the success showcased the country’s research capability and will actively support the test aircraft programmes.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Monday it test-fired two cruise missiles from a submarine off its east coast, the latest in the country’s series of weapons tests.

The test on Sunday came a day before the U.S. and South Korean militaries begin large-scale joint military drills that North Korea views as a rehearsal for invasion.

The official Korean Central News Agency said Monday that the missile launches were meant to confirm the reliability of the weapons system and gauge underwater-to-surface offensive operations of the country’s submarine units. The missile tests show the North’s resolve to respond with “overwhelming powerful forces” to “the U.S. imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces,” which the news agency said “are getting evermore undisguised in their anti-(North Korea) military maneuvers.”

“There are a lot of 40-year-olds out there who ain’t particularly competent,” Sanders said. “Older people, you know, you look at the individual. I don’t think you make a blanket statement.”

Haley, the 51-year-old former governor of South Carolina, announced her bid for the Republican nomination for president last week. In her announcement speech, calling for “a new generation,” she expressed support for a policy mandating mental competency tests for politicians older than 75.

Former President Donald Trump, 76, has announced a run for re-election, and a host of other Republicans have also hinted at possible campaigns. President Joe Biden, 80, is also expected to run again.

Chandrayaan-3: India’s moon lander clears key tests successfully

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The moon lander part of India’s third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3, successfully underwent the EMI-EMC (Electro-Magnetic Interference/ Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) test recently, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Sunday.

According to ISRO, the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully underwent EMI/EMC test during January 31-February 2 at the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru.

The EMI-EMC test is conducted for satellite missions to ensure the functionality of the satellite subsystems in the space environment and their compatibility with the expected electromagnetic levels.

This test is a major milestone in the realisation of the satellites.

Chandrayaan-3 interplanetary mission has three major modules:the Propulsion module, Lander module, and Rover.

The mission’s complexity calls for establishing radio-frequency (RF) communication links between the modules, said ISRO.

During the Chandrayaan-3 lander EMI/EC test, launcher compatibility, antenna polarisation of all RF systems, standalone auto compatibility tests for orbital and powered descent mission phases, and Lander and Rover compatibility tests for post landing mission phase were ensured.

The performance of the systems was satisfactory, the Indian space agency added.

  • Tests ‘rule out a new stroke’ for Fetterman, spokesperson says

Tests ‘rule out a new stroke’ for Fetterman, spokesperson says

    [ad_1]

The senator went to the hospital on Wednesday after feeling “lightheaded,” his office said in an an earlier statement.

Fetterman, who suffered a stroke last May, left the Senate Democratic retreat on Wednesday and called his staff, who drove him to The George Washington University Hospital in Washington. Initial tests did not show signs of a new stroke, but he was kept overnight “for observation,” his office said.

“He is in good spirits and talking with his staff and family,” his office said. “We will provide more information when we have it.”

Fetterman, 53, suffered a stroke while campaigning for his Senate seat, winning the primary while still in the hospital and ultimately beating Republican candidate Mehmet Oz in the November election. The Pennsylvania Democrat’s cardiologist has said Fetterman suffers from both atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.

His recovery became a major contention point during the campaign, especially after a televised debate with Oz in which Fetterman stumbled over words and struggled to string sentences together. Some Republicans questioned his ability to work as a senator, while supporters of Fetterman applauded his bravery.
