Repetition of Nakba? Israel calls tenders for new west bank settlement units

    [ad_1]

Amid the rising death tolls of Palestinians after Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip, Israeli authorities have invited tenders for work on more than 1,000 new housing projects in the occupied West Bank. Despite the stay calls of Arab and international bodies, the policies of settlement expansion in view of greater Israel are expanding in Palestinian territories.

As per media reports the new settlement units will be located in Beitar Illit, Efrat, Kiryat Arba, Ma’ale Ephraim, and Karnei Shomron. In addition, 89 units will be constructed in the Gilo settlement west of occupied Jerusalem.

According to the housing construction project, it will have a large residential complex that includes a commercial complex, a kindergarten, public areas and medical clinics.

The housing construction policies on the occupied west bank are being enforced again after 23 years.

As soon as the policies of Israeli settlements in West occupied banks came out, the Palestinians started raising concerns about its potential effects and increasing settler violence against Palestinians to change their identity in the area.

Palestinians say the policies which have already been done in past with the worst consequence will violate the 1997 Hebron Protocol, under which Israel is obligated to preserve the land and identity of Palestinians in the area.

Residents of Hebron are in constant fear that the settlement expansion will result in more military checkpoints which may lead to more humiliation and a huge number of Israeli military presence in the areas.

Following the tender call, The Prime Minister of Palestine, Mohammed Shtayyeh on Monday called on UNESCO to intervene in the matter to prevent Israeli authorities from occupying further land and establishing a settlement adjacent to the Village of Sebastia, near Nablus, along with the humiliation of Palestinians it would cause severe damage to the historic site of the area.

Speaking at a meeting of the Palestinian Cabinet in Ramallah, Mohammed Shtayyeh raised his concern that the settlement expansions in Hebron are a continuation of the Nakba Massacre or catastrophe where lakhs of Palestinians were forced to leave the land and some of them were killed for not vacating the place, that also began with the seizure of Palestinian land on the formation of Israel in 1948.

Palestinian human rights activists have also called on the European Union (EU) to cancel the free visas to Israeli settlers and their leaders resing in the settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem who aim to visit Europe.

These policies have been drafted after a right-wing party Likud headed by Benjamin Netanyahu won recent elections in Israel.

Following the win, thousands of Israelis protested in several cities against the Benjamin Netanyahu-led party, on January 28, 2023, in views on the proposed legislation, which the government claims is required to tame a judiciary that exercises excessive power but which critics claim eliminates an essential check on those in authority.

  • Congress alleges Rs 16,000 crore BJP tenders in Karnataka polls; seeks EC action

Congress alleges Rs 16,000 crore BJP tenders in Karnataka polls; seeks EC action

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday petitioned the Election Commission seeking its intervention on rejection of the party advertisements and issuance of tenders worth a staggering Rs 16,000 crore by the BJP government hours before the declaration of Karnataka Assembly elections.

The opposition party, which is seeking to wrest power from the BJP in the southern state, also demanded that certain officers in the poll panel who have completed more than six years, be transferred from Karnataka. The Congress also provided details of such officers.

The Congress sought action against the Punjab government over the transfer of various IPC, PCS and PPS officers to allegedly favour the ruling AAP, and displaying photographs of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Aam Aadmi’ clinics, which the opposition party said is a “direct violation of the model code of conduct” which is in force due to the bye-election in the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency.

    MS Education Academy

The party rued that five videos of the Congress seeking to create awareness among the voters in Karnataka on allegations raised against the BJP government in the state as well as the party’s design for guarantee cards being issued to voters have been rejected on the ground that these cards shall be used to collect personal information of voters.

Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress pointed out that in the past, the saffron party has run smear campaigns against the INC in the state of Karnataka without any restraint.

“Yet the Indian National Congress (INC) is not being allowed permission to run advertisements that are far tamer in comparison. It is our submission that the incorrect motive of collecting personal data of voters is made upon us.

“The decision to reject our advertisements is completely incorrect and requires urgent reconsideration,” it said.

“We urge the Commission to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves and to reconsider the decision given by the Karnataka State Media Certification Commission (KMCC),” the party said in its memorandum to the Election Commission (EC).

The Congress also alleged that various tenders were issued by the ruling BJP government in Karnataka, 48 hours before the declaration of the Model Code of Conduct in the state.

“These tenders worth a staggering Rs 16,000 crore (approximately) are, we submitted, a direct and blatant attempt to influence the outcome of the state election. As a result, we prayed before the EC that these be scrutinised, the offending individuals penalised and the same, at the very least, be injuncted until the conclusion of the election,” the party said.

“In the office of the CEO, there are people who have been serving for more than six years and still continue in their offices. This is a violation of the EC’s guidelines which state that officers are to be changed after every three years to prevent any appearance of bias. The Congress has submitted a list of all such officers and asked for the rule to be enforced,” the Congress leaders said.

The leaders who met the chief election commissioner and election commissioners include former Union minister Salman Khurshid, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Pratap Bajwa, Rajya Sabha MP Nasser Hussain, AICC secretary Pranav Jha, and AICC Media Department secretary Vineet Punia.

  • Vivek Agnihotri appears in Delhi HC, tenders apology, gets discharged

Vivek Agnihotri appears in Delhi HC, tenders apology, gets discharged

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri appeared before the Delhi High Court on Monday and tendered an unconditional apology in connection with a criminal contempt case over his alleged remarks against a judge of the court.

Accepting his apology, a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Vikas Mahajan discharged Agnihotri of the contempt charge and cautioned him to remain careful in the future.

The high court recalled the criminal contempt notice issued to him and noted that an affidavit filed by Agnihotri also reflected the regret and remorse unconditionally expressed by him to the court.

    MS Education Academy

“In view of the circumstances that Vivek Agnihotri stated that he has utmost respect for the institution of judiciary and did not intend to wilfully offend the majesty of this court, the notice to show cause issued to him is hereby recalled. Vivek Agnihotri stands discharged as the alleged contemnor,” the bench said.

“Mr. Agnihotri we will be cautioning you to be careful in future,” the bench told the filmmaker who appeared before the court in pursuance of its earlier direction.

In 2018, the filmmaker had put out tweets alleging bias against Justice S Muralidhar, who was then a judge of the Delhi High Court and is currently the chief justice of the Orissa High Court, as he had released rights activist Gautam Navlakha from house arrest in the Bhima-Koregaon violence case.

Subsequently, contempt of court proceedings were initiated against Agnihotri and others by the high court.

On December 6 last year, the court asked the filmmaker to “show remorse in person” after he tendered an unconditional apology through an affidavit.

“We are asking him (Agnihotri) to remain present because he is the alleged contemnor. Does he have any difficulty in appearing before this court? He has to be present and show remorse in person,” the court had said.

The lawyer appearing for another alleged contemnor, Anand Ranganathan, assured the court that he would remain present before it on May 24, the next date of hearing in the case.

During the hearing, Justice Mridul said courts do not punish for contempt to secure their dignity as the dignity of courts does not come from what people have to say about judiciary but from the duties the courts discharge.

Referring to a previous judgement of the Supreme Court in a contempt case, the bench said, “Our dignity is founded on a stronger foundation and not on what somebody says about us. There are times when you have to give quietus to things.” The high court said it had kept the matter pending only to make it clear that “you can’t make things irresponsibly”.

It noted that Agnihotri has reiterated his remorse and tendered an unconditional apology for the alleged offensive statement made on Twitter.

“Twitter is a great source of misery,” the bench orally observed.

It also said every citizen of the country must know that they should be careful and added, “we invite just and fair criticism…” Senior advocate Arvind Nigam, who is assisting the court in the matter as an amicus curiae, had earlier informed that Ranganathan has made a tweet in relation to the contempt proceedings that he would go down fighting.

The court had initiated the contempt proceedings in the present case on its own after receiving a letter from senior advocate Rajshekhar Rao. Rao, in his letter, had stated that the tweets were a deliberate attempt to attack a high court judge.

The contempt proceedings were also initiated against Swaminathan Gurumurthy, the editor of the Chennai-based weekly, “Thuglak”, for his tweets against the judge.

The proceedings against Gurumurthy were subsequently closed in October 2019.

Earlier, the court had directed two social media platforms to block the weblinks to an offending article levelling scandalous allegations against the judge.

  • BJP inflating tenders to raise money for Karnataka polls

BJP inflating tenders to raise money for Karnataka polls

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka unit Congress leaders on Wednesday accused the BJP-led state government of inflating and finalising tenders to raise money for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Karnataka unit Congress president D.K. Shivakumar said “the term of the BJP government in the state is just one month”.

“The ruling BJP is hastening the tender process in public works department, irrigation, micro irrigation, power, rural development and other departments.

“The tender value is inflated. Suppose, if the tender estimated value is Rs 500 crore, it is being inflated to Rs 1,000 crore. We are ready to provide all evidence in this regard,” Shivakumar stated.

The code of conduct is going to be implemented by March 7 or 10 after the Budget Session.

Some major tenders are given after tabling them in the cabinet. While, others are given without discussing in the cabinet. The tenders are given in 7 days of time, Shivakumar said.

The legislators are giving offers to contractors on streets and telling them that if they want to get this tender, they will have to give a certain amount of money before elections, he said.

Shivakumar further said that BJP MLA Gulihatti Shekar had also written a letter to the government in this regard. The party is giving the task to BJP legislators and for those who have not got ministerial berths.

“For any work to be taken up in Bengaluru, the deals are finalised in the CM’s office. The government has stated that it had released Rs 7,100 crore for filling up of potholes. The state has been made the capital of corruption.
