India temporarily relocates embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan

New Delhi: India has decided to temporarily relocate its embassy from the violence-hit Sudanese capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan in view of the prevailing security situation in the African country.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said this on Tuesday.

“In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan,” it said.

“The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments,” the MEA said.

Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan. It is located at a distance of around 850 km from Khartoum.

India has been operating military aircraft and naval ships from Port Sudan to evacuate its citizens from the African country.

The Indian embassy in Khartoum is located just opposite to the airport in the city and that zone has seen a lot of fighting.

In the last few days, Indian officials worked round the clock to evacuate Indians, people familiar with the matter said.

No Indian official resides in the embassy complex. They were largely operating from their places of stay in view of the intense fighting.

Under “Operation Kaveri”, India has been taking its citizens in buses from the conflict zones of Khartoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan, from where they are being taken to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah in the Indian Air Force’s heavy-lift transport aircraft and Indian Navy’s ships.

From Jeddah, the Indians are being brought back home in either commercial flights or the IAF’s aircraft. India has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan.

“The Embassy may be approached at following numbers: +249 999163790; +249 119592986; +249 915028256 and E-mail: cons1.khartoum@mea.gov.in,” the MEA said in a statement.

McDonald’s temporarily shuts US offices, plans major layoffs

    [ad_1]

New York: Fast food giant McDonald’s has temporarily shut its offices in the US this week as it gears up to lay off several employees as part of the restructuring plan amid the global economic meltdown, the media reported.

According to Wall Street Journal, the Chicago-based burger major told US employees, and some international staff, “that they should work from home from Monday through Wednesday so it can deliver staffing decisions virtually”.

“During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization,” the company said in an internal email.

    MS Education Academy

“We want to ensure the comfort and confidentiality of our people during the notification period,” the company added.

McDonald’s was yet to comment on the development or on the number of employees being laid off.

In January, the company said it planned to make “difficult” decisions about changes to its corporate staffing levels by April.

CEO Chris Kempczinski had said at the time that he expected to save money as part of the workforce assessment.

McDonald’s employs more than 1,50,000 people globally in corporate roles and its owned restaurants with 70 percent of them located outside of the US.

The company has conducted several rounds of layoffs in recent years.

In 2018, McDonald’s said that the company was cutting its management to be “more dynamic, nimble and competitive”.

  • Federal judge temporarily blocks Tennessee’s anti-drag law

Federal judge temporarily blocks Tennessee’s anti-drag law

    [ad_1]

    lgbtq legislation drag 43517

Parker wrote that the state has failed to make a compelling argument as to why Tennessee needed the new law, adding that the court also agrees the statute is likely vague and overly broad.

The word “drag” doesn’t appear in the new law, which instead changed the definition of adult cabaret in Tennessee to mean “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors.” Furthermore, “male or female impersonators” are now classified as a form of adult cabaret, akin to strippers and topless, go-go and exotic dancers.

The law banned adult cabaret performances from public property or anywhere minors might be present. Performers who break the law risk being charged with a misdemeanor or a felony for a repeat offense.

“The law prohibits a drag performer wearing a crop top and mini skirt from dancing where minors might see it, but does not prohibit a Tennessee Titans cheerleader wearing an identical outfit from performing the exact same dance in front of children,” the initial complaint contends.

Parker also listed concerns aligning with the group’s argument that the law was overly broad, questioning the location specifications of a cabaret entertainment venue that might be viewed by a minor.

“Does a citizen’s private residence count? How about a camping ground at a national park?” Parker wrote. “Ultimately, the Statute’s broad language clashes with the First Amendment’s tight constraints.”

The complaint also details the efforts last year to block a drag show at a park in Jackson, west of Nashville, as part of a Pride festival. A legal complaint spearheaded by Republican state Rep. Chris Todd and Republican state Sen. Ed Jackson sought to prevent the show, forcing organizers to reach a settlement to hold the event indoors with an age restriction.

“After abusing the state courts to violate the First Amendment rights of Jackson Pride, Rep. Todd ‘was asked to come up with legislation that would make this much more clear’ — that drag performances in front of children are a violation of Tennessee law,” the complaint argues.

Parker referenced Todd’s actions in his Friday decision, saying the state attorney general’s office failed to give a clear answer on the purpose of the new law given Tennessee’s current obscenity laws.

During Thursday’s hearing, Mulroy told the judge that he didn’t object to a temporary restraining order.

“There has been much concern and confusion about the law from the community,” Mulroy said in a statement to The Associated Press. “This will allow the court to clarify the scope, application, and constitutionality of the statute. It’s important to understand the scope of this law so that it doesn’t have a harmful effect on constitutionally protected expression.”

A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Friday.

The Tennessee drag law marks the second major proposal targeting LGBTQ+ people passed by state lawmakers this year. Republican Gov. Bill Lee signed into law GOP-backed legislation banning most gender-affirming care.

Lee has faced criticism for approving the anti-drag show law, particularly since a photo surfaced of him as a high school senior dressed in women’s clothing in 1977.

Lee called comparing the two issues “ridiculous.” When asked for specific examples of inappropriate drag shows taking place in front of children, Lee did not cite any, but said he was concerned about protecting children.

Ahead of Ramzan, UAE temporarily hikes prices of eggs, poultry products

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: With Ramzan around the corner, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a temporary increase in the prices of eggs and poultry products by a maximum of 13 percent, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Economy (MoE) approved the decision and the prices would be reviewed in six months’ time from now.

The hike is based on a ministerial resolution issued on March 6, after several companies requested it.

The ministry conducted its analytical study to find a benchmark range for the increased cost of eggs in the UAE.

According to the ministry study, a 13 to 20 percent increase would be reasonable.

The ministry said the temporary price hike was adopted as part of efforts to balance the needs of the commercial sector and consumers as well as maintain food security in the markets.

This increase will help protect egg and chicken companies and farms from global inflation and high production costs, as well as ensure that prices in the markets remain stable and reasonable.

  • U.S. should temporarily guarantee all bank deposits, senior House Republican says

U.S. should temporarily guarantee all bank deposits, senior House Republican says

    [ad_1]

    virus outbreak trump 78852

“If you don’t do this, there’s going to be a run on your smaller banks,” he said. “Everyone’s going to take their money out and run to the JPMorgan’s and these too-big-to-fail banks, and they’re going to get bigger and everybody else is going to get smaller and weaker, and it’s going really be bad for our system.”

Luetkemeyer is one of the first Republican lawmakers to call for a broad-based deposit guarantee as a remedy for the banking crisis, leaning into a Biden administration response that other GOP politicians have blasted as a bailout. Luetkemeyer is among the House Republicans supporting regulators’ recent actions to contain the banking meltdown, in line with House Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.).

“The thought process here is that this is a contagion that could be spread across the entire banking system if it’s not contained and if people don’t stop and and be calm about their assessment of the situation,” Luetkemeyer said. “This is a Chicken Little situation. You know, the sky is falling. Everybody runs around like that, the whole thing’s going to implode.”

Luetkemeyer’s concerns come as the smallest, “community” banks try to make the case that they’re not engaged in the kind of risk-taking that that brought down their larger, regional competitors.

The Independent Community Bankers of America, a trade association for the smallest lenders, is calling on policymakers to impose stricter oversight on the largest financial institutions and to spare community banks from having to pay for the deposit bailout of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. It’s also a competitive concern, as the biggest global banks appear to be attracting deposits from other banks.

Luetkemeyer pointed to a temporary policy established after the 2008 meltdown that established unlimited deposit insurance above the $250,000 limit.

“So what you could do right now is that very same thing and say, hey, look, for another 12 months here or six months, we’re going to guarantee you every single deposit in this country and every bank until we get this interest rate situation resolved and these banks get back on solid footing,” he said.

He later changed his position on the potential duration, with a spokesperson saying the guarantee could be in place “perhaps 30 to 60 days.”

Still, Luetkemeyer said “the system is sound” and “in better shape than it’s been in probably 20 years.”

“But,” he said, “we do have a few problems in it that need to be worked out.”

    TDP’s Lokesh temporarily suspends padyatra

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh has temporarily suspended his ongoing padyatra in view of the passing away of his cousin and actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna.

Lokesh, whose ‘Yuva Galam’ padyatra was passing through Srikalahasti constituency in Chittoor district, stopped the foot march on learning about Taraka Ratna’s death on Saturday night and left for Hyderabad.

Lokesh, son of TDP president and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday paid their last respects to Taraka Ratna at the latter’s house at Mokila in Rangaeddy district near Hyderabad. He was accompanied by his wife Brahmini.

The actor had collapsed due to massive cardiac arrest during Lokesh’s padyatra in Kuppam constituency on January 27.

He was first taken to a local hospital and was later shifted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bengaluru, where he succumbed after battling for life for 23 days.

Taraka Ratna’s last rites are to be performed in Hyderabad on Monday.

Lokesh may resume the padyatra on Tuesday.

  • Apple temporarily halts its own Wi-Fi chip development

Apple temporarily halts its own Wi-Fi chip development

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Apple has reportedly halted the development of its in-house Wi-Fi chip “for a while”.

Many investors are worried that the tech giant’s efforts to develop its own Wi-Fi chip might negatively impact Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chip business, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a blogpost on Thursday.

The iPhone maker’s previous development for Wi-Fi solution was the Wi-Fi-only chip and not the Wi-Fi+Bluetooth combo chip.

Making a Wi-Fi+Bluetooth combination chip is more difficult than making a Wi-Fi-only chip from a design perspective.

As a result, it would be difficult for the tech giant to replace Broadcom’s combo chips with its own because the majority of Apple’s products employ the combo chip.

“The slowdown of processor upgrades is unfavourable to the sales of end products (such as A16 and M2 series chips),” Kuo said.

According to Kuo, the company has focused the majority of its integrated circuit (IC) design resources on the development of processors to make sure that the world’s most advanced 3nm processors can enter mass production smoothly in 2023-2025 and that the performance upgrade and power consumption improvement can significantly improve against predecessors.

He also mentioned that in the next two-three years, “Wi-Fi chips will usher in critical Wi-Fi 6E/7 upgrades.”
Therefore, it is riskier for the iPhone maker to use its own Wi-Fi chips “when the industry standard markedly changes”.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the company was working on a replacement for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip which it currently uses from Broadcom, and is planning to start integrating it into devices in 2025.
