Delhi: BJP, VHP protest after temple demolished as part of DDA anti-encroachment drive

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished a temple in the Rajender Nagar area on Thursday as part of its anti-encroachment drive, triggering a protest by the BJP and the Vishva Hindu Parishad.

An official of the DDA said, “For demolition of religious structures, the nod of the religious committee (formed by the government) is required. We sought the committee’s approval and following its go-ahead, the demolition was carried out.”

A senior police officer said that adequate security arrangements were made for the demolition exercise in the Rajender Nagar area of central Delhi.

“The demolition drive was carried out Thursday morning. Forty per cent of the structure was demolished and the process was conducted peacefully,” the police officer said.

Several BJP and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders and workers staged a sit-in at the temple in protest against the demolition exercise.

Former Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal government was targeting temples in the city.

“We are protesting the action by DDA and I appeal to people to gather here and oppose the effort to demolish the temple,” Gupta said.

UP: 9 booked for spreading rumours about Kashi Vishwanath temple

    [ad_1]

Varanasi: A case has been registered against nine persons for allegedly spreading rumours that the Kashi Vishwanath (KV) temple administration was charging a fee for ‘sparsh darshan’ of the presiding deity.

The police spokesman said that an FIR has been lodged under sections 153-A (disturbing communal harmony), 295 (insulting religion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and the relevant sections of the IT Act on the basis of a complaint filed by temple official Arvind Shukla.

According to the complainant, a few persons visited the temple on March 2, a day before ‘Rangbhari Ekadashi’.

As one of them, Ajay Sharma, donated Rs 500 to the temple, he was given a donation slip at the temple’s counter located on the premises of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust, a police official said.

A picture of the slip was posted on a social media platform, which was shared multiple times, thus creating the rumour, the complainant said.

Giving a clarification, the temple administration said no fee was being charged from devotees for ‘sparsh darshan’.

  • 2 found guilty of murdering man outside Hindu temple in UK

2 found guilty of murdering man outside Hindu temple in UK

    [ad_1]

London: Two men have been found guilty of fatally stabbing a man outside a Hindu temple located in South East of England, media reports said.

Mohammed Rafaqit Kayani, 24, from Slough, was found injured in the temple car park in Keel Drive on August 30, 2022 and died later in hospital, the BBC reported.

A jury at Reading Crown Court convicted Hassan Al-Kubanji, 22, of Pimlico in London, and drug dealer Riaz Miah, 21, of no fixed address on Thursday, adjourning their sentencing until April 3.

While Miah previously pleaded guilty to supplying heroin and cocaine as well as possessing a blade in public, the jury found Al-Kubanji not guilty of the same three offences.

A third defendant, Miguel Parian John, 42, was found guilty of assisting an offender and two counts of blade possession.

However, he was cleared of two counts of possessing cocaine and heroin with intent to supply, the report said.

John will be sentenced at a later date.

According to a Reading Chronicle report, the defendants began shouting after the verdict and a brawl broke out in the court with riot police being called subsequently.

Kayani, a keen boxer and a Virgin Atlantic Heathrow check-in agent, was stabbed in the chest and collapsed in a pool of blood.

He was chased from a playground in Concorde Way to the Slough Hindu Temple after an “altercation”, according to media reports.

The Reading Crown Court heard earlier that Miah and Al-Kubanji were allegedly “defending themselves” from Kayani and his friend Adil Mahmood.

Kayani’s wife described him as “a loving son, caring brother, selfless friend and proud Muslim man”.

  • Tipu Sultan razed temple to build Jama Masjid, claims Karnataka BJP

Tipu Sultan razed temple to build Jama Masjid, claims Karnataka BJP

    [ad_1]

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national secretary C T Ravi claimed that the Jama Masjid in Srirangapatnam town of Mandya district, Karnataka is built over an ancient Anjanaya (Hanuman) temple, which was ‘razed down’ by Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan.

Addressing reporters, Ravi, flanked by senior BJP leader KS Eshwarappa, demanded an archaeological survey of the mosque in order to prove his point.

“There’s a Kote Anjaneya temple that has been turned into a Masjid. Let the archaeology department survey it. If there is any evidence of a temple then they (Congress) must accept the fact that Tipu was a fanatic, if not, we will tender an apology,” said Ravi.

The 18th-century Mysuru ruler is a constant target of the saffron party.

Last year, state chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had said that the people of the state wouldn’t forgive Congress leaders for displaying a soft corner for terrorists and for talking about Tipu Sultan in order to appease the minority vote bank. He made the remarks while addressing a Jan Sankalp Yatra that was attended by former CM B S Yediyurappa in Pandavapura.

On February 10, Ravi accused the Congress party of doing politics on the policies of Tipu Sultan. “Congress is doing politics on the policies of Tipu Sultan. We are doing politics on the policies of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar,” he said.

On February 15, Karnataka BJP president Nalin Kateel Kumar, while addressing a public rally, asked them to “kill” all “ardent followers” of Tipu Sultan.

“I ask the people here whether you offer prayers to Lord Hanuman or Tipu. Then will you send those who are ardent followers of Tipu to the forest? Think about it. Do you think Karnataka needs Hanuman devotees or descendants of Tipu? I am issuing a challenge — those who are ardent followers of Tipu should not remain alive on this fertile soil,” Kateel said.

  • Tirumala temple introduces facial recognition technology

Tirumala temple introduces facial recognition technology

    [ad_1]

Tirupati: Authorities at Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala at Tirupati on Wednesday introduced facial recognition technology for darshan on an experimental basis.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the richest temple, introduced the technology at Vaikuntam 2 and in the Accommodation Management System.

TTD officials said that the idea is to enhance transparency in tokenless darshan and allotment of rooms providing more effective services to the multitude of visiting pilgrims.

This new tech system will be used to prevent a person from procuring more tokens in Sarva Darshan (free darshan) Complex and also at the Caution Deposit refund counters.

Officials said that the use of the technology would also help them in denying darshan to people who come repeatedly, while other devotees have to wait for a long time. A devotee will not be allowed to have free darshan more than once a month.

The Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) will also be helpful for the TTD in ensuring that rooms for accommodation are allotted to genuine devotees at subsidised rentals. This is likely to check middlemen and touts, who book rooms at subsidised rentals and later transfer allocation to devotees by charging exorbitant prices.

The (FRT) is based on a software which classifies a single face based on gender, age, emotions, and features. It determines the similarity between two faces to evaluate a claim.

Depending on the results of implementation of FCT for Sarva Darshan and accommodation management system, the TTD will work out a plan to extend it to other wings.

The TTD said that a total of 71,387 devotees had darshan on February 27 while the total Hundi collection was Rs 5.71 crore.

The hill shrine attracts 50,000 to one lakh pilgrims every day. The number on special occasions like the annual Brahmotsavam and festivals goes up to 4-5 lakh.

The temple earns Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 1,200 crore from Hundi collections or offerings by devotees every year.

It was announced in November last year that the temple owns assets of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore including 10.25 tonnes of gold. The assets include land parcels, buildings, cash and gold deposits given as offerings by the devotees.

  • News about curbs at Kedarnath misleading: Temple committee chief

News about curbs at Kedarnath misleading: Temple committee chief

    [ad_1]

Kedarnath: Amid the news of a prescribed dress code, ban on Dakshina and mobile phones being spread amongst the devotees, the president of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC) Ajendra Ajay has clarified and termed the news as misleading.

To make the arrangements for the Char Dham Yatra more accessible and convenient for the devotees, the BKTC had sent a team to study four major temples of the country. On the basis of that report, efforts are being made to improve the arrangements at Badrinath and Kedarnath, Ajay said.

He said that rumours are being spread about banning Dakshina in the Yatra which are entirely baseless.

The report submitted by the team is being discussed and the temple committee will not interfere in any way with Dakshina as it is the right of the Tirtha Purohit and the Pandits.

Ajay added that the staff in the temples are salaried employees who will not take any money from the devotees, instead donation boxes will be installed in the temples.

He assured that the devotees will not be pressured for the donations and it is solely a matter of faith.

On the matter of implementation of a certain dress code, Ajay said that the prescribed dress code will only be implemented for the salaried employees of the Committee after due discussion, for easier identification and access to help and information by the authorised people.

Regarding banning YouTube and mobile phones during the Yatra, Ajay said that no decision had been taken about this and it is still being discussed.

He added that an SOP would soon be issued regarding Darshan during the Char Dham Yatra.
