New Delhi: Hijab enforcement groups will be set up on the Tehran Metro and those not wearing hijab will be refused entry, in effect banning some women from work, as per Iranian state TV, a media report said.

The move appears to be part of a pattern of government efforts to force Iranian public bodies to take greater responsibility for enforcing the hijab, The Guardian reported.

Many Iranian women, especially in urban centres, have refused to comply with the hijab rule, in a sign that the “women, life, freedom” protests that began in September last year continue in a more individualised form, the report said.

The latest threatening clampdown comes as girls in secondary schools in Tehran, Karaj and other cities continue to report poison attacks. At least nine schools were reported to have been attacked on Sunday. According to Iranian MP Mohammad Hassan Asefari, a government fact-finding committee said the security agencies had been unable to identify the perpetrators, while the Ministry of Health is yet to determine the nature of the poison being used.

The contrast between the urgency of the efforts to enforce the hijab and the inability of the investigators to use CCTV to identify those behind the poison attacks has infuriated opponents of the government.

The Tehran Metro Company had already announced that “in line with the demands of the noble people of Iran on the issue of hijab”, it was launching a verbal reminder project in Tehran and suburban Metro stations. But the latest pictures on Iran state TV show Metro staff barring women trying to pass through the ticket barrier without a hijab, The Guardian reported.

Masoud Darshti, the Chief Executive of Tehran and Suburbs Metro Operation Company, had announced the establishment of a chastity and hijab headquarters to issue reminders. He said his staff would be required to implement any police order, but added that he had not yet personally received the instruction formally.

Tehran welcomes normalisation of ties with Riyadh, Cairo: Iranian FM

Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has said Tehran welcomes the normalisation of relations with Riyadh and Cairo within the framework of its policy of strengthening ties with Muslim countries.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks at a joint press conference in Baghdad with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein following their meeting earlier on Wednesday, according to the official news agency IRNA.

The Foreign Minister praised efforts by Iraq’s officials, particularly the Foreign Minister, to host rapprochement talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia in Baghdad, and to bring about a detente between Tehran and Cairo, Xinhua news agency reported.

He also thanked his Iraqi counterpart’s efforts to bring Iran’s views closer to those of Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Turning to bilateral ties with Iraq, Amir-Abdollahian highlighted Tehran’s sustained efforts to improve relations with its western neighbor.

He said Iran supports Iraq’s territorial integrity and independence, as well as the Iraqi government.

Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday morning and met with the country’s top officials.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016 in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shia cleric.

To improve bilateral relations and ease regional tension, Baghdad hosted several rounds of direct talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia over the past two years.

In recent years, Iran announced readiness to mend ties with Egypt by settling differences on certain issues.

Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned an armed attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in the Iranian capital Tehran, in which one person was killed and two others injured.

The Ministry’s spokesman Nasser Kanaani expressed “deep” sympathy to the assassinated embassy member’s family as well as the Azerbaijani government, according to a statement published on the Ministry’s website.

He added the assailant has been arrested by police and security forces and is being interrogated, Xinhua news agency reported.

Kanaani gave the assurance that at the order of the Iranian political and security authorities, the attack is under investigation with high priority and sensitivity.

Mohammad Shahriari, the caretaker Chairman of Tehran Province’s criminal court, said initial investigations showed that personal issues have been behind the attack, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Shahriari said the attacker claimed that his wife went to the embassy in April 2022 and had never returned home, and the assailant had gone to the embassy on numerous occasions looking for his wife but had never received any response.

Shahriari added the attacker said he had believed that his wife was in the embassy, but did not want to meet him.

On Friday morning, the assailant went to the embassy with a Kalashnikov rifle and started shooting, killing one employee and injuring two others, according to Tehran police Chief Hossein Rahimi.

The assailant had entered the embassy with his two young children, he added.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry identified the victim as a guard, who had served as the head of security at the embassy, saying the Friday attack also wounded two people.
