Mob sets police station on fire protesting teen girl’s death in Bengal

    [ad_1]

Kaliaganj: Miscreants set fire to Kaliaganj police station in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Tuesday protesting the death of a teenage girl whose body was found in a canal last week.

People allegedly from the Adivasi and Rajbangshi communities organised a “Thana gherao” programme on Tuesday afternoon protesting against alleged “police inaction” in the case and claiming that the girl had been raped and murdered.

Preliminary post-mortem of the girl’s body, however, indicated she had not been raped.

The mob broke barricades and pelted the police station with stones, an officer said.

The police personnel started a baton charge but could not stop the mob from entering the police station and setting it on fire, he said.

One vehicle was also set ablaze.

“We are trying to bring the situation under control,” the police officer told PTI.

On April 21, the body of the 17-year-old girl was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj. Alleging that she was raped and killed, locals had put up road blockades by burning tyres and set several shops on fire.

The incident triggered a war of words between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP ahead of the panchayat election in the state.

The TMC accused the saffron party of trying to “politicise and communalise” the matter, as BJP demanded a CBI probe and promised legal aid to the girl’s family.

Four police officers, all in the rank of Assistant Sub Inspectors, were Monday suspended for allegedly dragging the body of the girl on the road while removing it from the spot where it was found, amid protests by people.

A video purportedly showing the incident has gone viral.

  • Indian-origin teen wins USD 250K US science prize

Indian-origin teen wins USD 250K US science prize

    [ad_1]

New York: An Indian-origin teen has won a prestigious high schoolers’ science prize of $250,000 for developing a computer model to predict the structure of RNA molecules that can aid in quickly diagnosing diseases.

Neel Moudgal, 17, was announced the winner of the Regeneron Science Talent competition on Tuesday.

Ambika Grover, 17, was ranked sixth for an $80,000 award and Siddhu Pachipala, 18, placed ninth for a $50,000 prize.

About 2,000 high school students competed in the Science Talent Search with 40 selected for the final round.

According to the Society for Science that ran the competition sponsored by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Moudgal’s computational biology and bioinformatics project “can rapidly and reliably predict the structure of various RNA molecules to facilitate the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutic drugs for diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and viral infections”.

Grover developed an injectable microbubble to break up blood clots and treat stroke victims by restoring the blood flow to the brain.

Pachipala used machine learning to assess a patient’s suicide risk.

By analysing a patient’s journal entries the semantics in an individual’s writing could be correlated with their psychological health and risk of suicide.

Pachipala, who was chosen by the finalists as most exemplifying them, also was given the Seaborg Award.

The winners of the Science Talent Search programme originally sponsored by Westinghouse and now associated with the current sponsor Regeneron have gone on to win 11 Nobel Prizes and two Fields Medals for mathematics.

George Yancopoulos, the co-founder and president of the New York State-headquartered Regeneron, was himself the Science Talent Search winner in 1976.

That experience convinced him to work on curing diseases and added: “I can only hope this year’s students will be similarly inspired to become the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators that will develop and advance solutions for the world’s greatest challenges”.

Palestinian teen killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers in West Bank

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: A Palestinian teenager on Tuesday died of critical wounds sustained in clashes with Israeli soldiers that broke out in the Far’a refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The ministry said that Mahmoud Al-Aydi, 17, died of his wounds after being shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said that an Israeli army force stormed the refugee camp to arrest Palestinians allegedly involved in attacks against the Israeli army in the West Bank.

An Israeli army spokesman said in a statement that the Israeli army and the security forces carried out regular operations in several West Bank areas, adding that Israeli soldiers confiscated weapons and arrested Palestinians wanted by Israel.

The statement added that a Palestinian suspect approached the soldiers with an explosive device, and the soldiers opened fire in response.

The killing was the latest in a year-long surge of violence between Israelis and the Palestinians.

Israel’s security forces have carried out daily raids in the West Bank, in which at least 45 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of 2023. Israel says that the raids are aimed at arresting suspects in a string of attacks against Israelis.

Tension has been mounting in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, mainly after the formation of the Israeli right-wing government headed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in December last year.

Indian-origin teen girl missing in US fearing family’s deportation amid layoffs

    [ad_1]

New York: An Indian-American teenager Tanvi Marupally has gone missing in the US and according to the local police, she ran away from home due to fear of her family being deported amid mass layoffs in the tech industry.

The incident happened in the US state of Arkansas and the community and Conway Police Department “continue to search for a missing 14-year-old girl and now there’s a reward for whoever can find her,” reports kark.com.

Marupally was last seen on January 17 near Conway Junior High School heading north on Davis Street.

According to the report, she was wearing a purple coat, pink pullover, blue shirt and blue jeans.

“Police said they believe one of the possible reasons why Tanvi ran away was a fear of her family being deported,” the report mentioned.

Tanvi’s father informed the Conway police department that acehe is no longer at risk of losing his job and that leaving the country is not a concern at this time”.

Charlie Crossman who owns Crossman Printing said he has made over one thousand fliers in the hopes of helping spread the word about Marupally.

“I hope just to get the word out there’s people I talk to about Tanvi and they don’t know about her. They live on Conway,” Crossman was quoted as saying.

Crossman spoke with Marupally’s parents when they came to his printing shop for assistance.

“They came in and I guess they had heard we were giving away flyers for people that wanted to hand them out and we helped them also go to a mailer,” Crossman added.

Marupally’s family is offering a $5,000 reward in hopes of bringing her home.

The news comes as thousands of Indian-origin tech employees on H1-B visa have lost jobs and have 60 days to find a new one, else leave the country.
