IND v AUS: KL Rahul gets a lot of balance into the team as a wicketkeeper, says T. Dilip

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: With India all set to face Australia in ODIs from Friday at the Wankhede Stadium, it also means the restart of the preparations for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup.

As India get back to 50-over fold after winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series 2-1, it is likely that K.L Rahul will be back in the playing eleven as a wicketkeeper-batter, apart from being the number five batter, a role where he’s had plenty of success in last few years.

India’s fielding coach T Dilip also hinted at the same, citing the balance Rahul brings to the playing eleven in ODIs. “We all know that KL Rahul is a wonderful player. He has a proven record. Even in ODIs, in the middle-order, he has proven enough as a batter. As a wicketkeeper, he gets a lot of balance into the team.”

“Since he is not someone who has picked the gloves just now — he has been doing that since a younger age – he adds a lot of things. Not much difficult to work on his wicketkeeping skills, apart from refining a few aspects,” he said in the pre-series press conference.

Dilip, who has been India’s fielding coach after R Sridhar moved on post the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, stated that improvements in fielding will continue to happen. “There are certain areas where we have certainly improved over a period of time. If you look at the number of direct-hit percentages in the (2022 T20) World Cup and that one direct hit from KL Rahul changed the course of the match.”

“That’s something we are looking at as a group and if you look at the overall ratio, even if there are no runouts, the number of times we have hit the stumps has improved a bit. That’s one area we will keep improving.”

Dilip has been part of the NCA setup and accompanied the Indian team for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021. He had worked with the Hyderabad Ranji team, India A and junior teams for over 15 years.

“If you look at the last T20 World Cup, we had three wicketkeepers who played. That’s been a trend. If you see all the wicketkeeper-batters that are coming up in the lines, they have been fantastic batters too. That adds to the balance (of the team).”

“As a fielding coach, my responsibility is not only to work on their wicketkeeping skills, but also work on their fielding skills, so that whatever role the team requires according to the combination on that particular day, they are well equipped for that,” he added.

With all-rounder Hardik Pandya set to captain India in the first ODI as Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to personal reasons, Dilip thinks he can do the leadership job well in 50-over cricket after leading the team in various T20Is.

“When it comes to Hardik Pandya, he is the captain now officially. But he has been in our leadership group for all these matches and he’s already proven in T20s what he can bring to the table as a captain.”

“Irrespective of that, even if Rohit is the captain, he is part of our leadership group, and he adds a lot of value to the team. Not only you, we all are looking forward to him. He’s well-equipped to do it.”

Dilip signed off by saying the intensity that senior players like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja bring while being excellent fielders is something which can have a good effect on the youngsters in the team.

“They (Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja) have proven over a period of time, they have been role models and examples in terms of what they can contribute in fielding. Players do look up to them. What special I see as a coach when they come to practice is the intensity. Even after proving themselves, they carry that intensity, which definitely rubs on to the youngsters.”

  • How the House GOP’s investigative tag team navigates the ring

How the House GOP’s investigative tag team navigates the ring

    [ad_1]

    congress juul 93206

Republicans are betting the two can pull off a tag team straight out of Jordan’s wrestling days. But Democrats are watching closely, eager to eke out political advantage from any tension points and toe-stepping between the GOP duo.

“We’re communicating. There’s always going to be some overlap, but it’s not a problem right now,” Comer said in a brief interview about their relationship.

Jordan added that he and Comer “work together all the time” including coordinating when the House is in session and talking on the phone when it’s not.

“He can do all the good work he is doing and he can work on some of the same things we’re working on. I don’t care one bit. … I think we make it too complicated. Let’s do our job,” Jordan said.

The duo might appear not to work on paper: Though they vote together most of the time, they’re hardly in lockstep — breaking in recent years on the farm bill and marijuana banking legislation. Notably, Jordan supported Trump-backed challenges to the 2020 election and ignored a subpoena from the Jan. 6 select committee; Comer has highlighted that he voted to certify President Joe Biden’s win, despite his district going overwhelmingly for Trump in 2020.

And they took significantly different paths to power. Jordan is a former Freedom Caucus chair who saw his stature rise in Washington through his ability to both antagonize and influence House GOP leadership, a bomb-throwing mentality that found favor during the Trump years.

Comer’s ascension through the House GOP ranks was quieter, as he defeated conservative opponents to secure the party’s top spot on the Oversight Committee less than three years ago. But with an extensive political network back in Kentucky, which raises the perennial question of his next planned move, Comer was also no lightweight before taking the gavel.

Comer quipped that Jordan, known for his rapid-fire dialogue, “gets more words per minute in than I do.” And he clarified that he doesn’t see himself as Jordan’s competitor, comparing the Ohioan to fellow Buckeye State native LeBron James while describing himself as “the kid lucky to be on the team.”

“I think it’s good — everybody acts like it’s bad,” Comer said of their relationship. “Maybe I’m a gullible country boy.”

Republicans back him up, however, chalking it up to a case of perceived opposites attracting.

Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.), a member of both the GOP’s panel investigating government politicization and the Oversight Committee, acknowledged they have “very different personalities” but said they are “more effective together.”

“It’s not good cop-bad cop, but it’s hard charging vs. a more laid-back personality,” he said.

Predictably, the investigative buddy act has become a top target for Democrats, the White House and Biden-world allies, who view its ascendance as a sign of how Republicans will use their majority: by training all their firepower on the administration, despite lacking evidence for many of their claims. Democrats are particularly confident that Jordan and Comer’s investigations will create blowback for Republicans in purple and Biden-won districts.

And Biden’s party feels it has plenty of material to work with already.

Though Democrats have long scrapped with Jordan, it’s Comer who has caught early and fierce pushback from his cross-aisle colleagues. The Kentuckian has had a near-constant TV presence, prompting private Democratic questions about whether he’s trying to prove himself to a conservative base that’s already embraced Jordan.

Most recently, Comer sparked days of headlines when he cited the late Beau Biden as an example that the U.S. attorney in Delaware had pulled punches on investigating the Biden family. The White House called Comer’s words “despicable.” The Oversight chair argued that his remarks were being widely mischaracterized and that he never said Biden’s son, who died of cancer, “should be indicted.”

It’s not just Democrats who have criticized Comer’s and Jordan’s approaches. Some GOP pundits have recently questioned the pace of Jordan’s investigations, and Comer’s expansive to-do list has sparked media questions about whether he’s spread himself too thin.

They have set up some clear lines of delineation: Jordan is handling a sweeping investigation into the Justice Department and the FBI, two prime targets for Republicans who grew increasingly antagonistic toward the federal law enforcement agencies during the Trump years. Comer, meanwhile, is digging into the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, hunting for government waste broadly and digging into how trillions of dollars in coronavirus aid were spent.

And true to their respective reputations, Jordan has publicly fired off a series of subpoenas for documents and interviews, while Comer issued his first three subpoenas with little fanfare. And Comer has seemed more willing to dive into subjects that won’t necessarily earn him headlines, like border contracts.

But some lines have only grown blurrier: They’ve held back-to-back hearings on the border, with Comer using his to question administration officials, while Jordan called witnesses critical of the Biden administration. The Ohioan also held a field hearing in Yuma., Ariz., that was boycotted by Democrats, lending itself to more of a political-rally vibe.

And while Comer has publicly talked about the impeachment of Biden officials, he’s careful in the halls of Congress to volley questions back in Jordan’s direction.

Jordan is also a member of the Oversight Committee, a dynamic that staff and colleagues say help the two coordinate their strategy. But it’s a visual reminder of the overlap, with Jordan sitting next to Comer on the dais.

Comer is taking the lead on most Hunter Biden-related investigations, but Jordan’s also probing a letter from former intelligence officials warning that a 2020 New York Post story on the president’s son’s laptop could be disinformation. And the Ohioan questioned why Attorney General Merrick Garland did not appoint a special counsel to look into Hunter Biden, whom DOJ has been investigating for years.

The Oversight chief held a hearing last month with former Twitter officials where Republicans grilled them over the social media company’s decision to temporarily restrict the 2020 article. Jordan, meanwhile, held his second politicized-government hearing Thursday focusing on the “Twitter files” — reports conservatives purport show collusion between the FBI and company executives to quash the Post story.

Comer and Jordan viewed those areas as examples of how they might dig into the same general topic but go at it from different angles. But Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.), the top Democrat on the Judiciary subpanel, used Thursday’s hearing to spotlight the overlap, noting that “three weeks ago House Oversight had this hearing with actual Twitter executives … and that didn’t go so well for the House Republicans.”

The duo’s GOP colleagues, however, are willing to give them broad leeway — for now — as long as they don’t literally hold the same hearing back-to-back.

“They’re good friends. They talk a lot,” said Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas). “If you have two competing hearings doing the same thing, that’s a problem, but I haven’t seen that so far.”

  • Biden team unveils new anti-cyberattack strategy

Biden team unveils new anti-cyberattack strategy

    [ad_1]

    biden 72026

Neuberger pointed to work already done by the Transportation Security Administration to secure pipelines and railroads against attacks, and said that additional sectors where cybersecurity regulations will be put in place will be announced soon.

The plan — put together by the White House’s Office of the National Cyber Director — is the first new cyber strategy in five years, and serves as a roadmap for setting out the administration’s goals for securing the nation in cyberspace. A senior administration official said that the White House is working on an “implementation plan” to put into action the goals the strategy lays out. The plan will be released in the coming months. The White House provided the briefing to reporters on the condition that the official be granted anonymity.

It’s been a rough few years for those trying to protect U.S. networks from hackers. In May 2021, Russian-linked hackers launched a ransomware attack against Colonial Pipeline that forced the company to temporarily shut down the flow of gas to the East Coast for a week. Similar strikes hit food supply lines. And the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year led to major cyber threats against the U.S. electric grid and other critical infrastructure sectors from Russian hackers.

The strategy outlines a vision for the federal government to use existing authorities to protect critical sectors from cyberattacks. Where there are “gaps” in relevant authorities, the strategy reads, the administration will work with Congress to build new regulatory tools over key sectors. The strategy also says the government may need to provide resources to critical infrastructure groups that may not have the funds to afford to implement the new requirements.

The strategy seeks to “rebalance the responsibility for cyber risk to those who are most able to bear it,” Acting National Cyber Director Kemba Eneas Walden told reporters in the briefing. “The biggest, most capable, and best-positioned actors in our digital ecosystem can and should shoulder a greater share of the burden for managing cyber risk and keeping us all safe.”

The industry has long pushed back against greater cyber regulations, and it’s something that Congress has hesitated to move on. The White House brought representatives in from across industries to review the strategy as it was being developed last year, and the senior administration official stressed that the new regulations would not be complex.

“The bar we’re setting is not a high bar, we’re really just hoping that owners and operators do the basics,” the official said.

POLITICO reached out to a number of industry groups about the administration’s plan to more heavily regulate critical sectors at risk of hacks, but did not get responses. In publicly released statements, such groups were measured and cautious in their language, and did not directly address the strategy’s emphasis on regulation.

Jonathan Spalter, president and CEO of USTelecom, which represents broadband groups including AT&T and Verizon, said that already, “broadband providers across the country are deeply committed to enhancing our nation’s cybersecurity.”

”Makers of enterprise software take seriously their responsibilities to customers and the public, and continuously work to evolve the security of their products to meet new threats,” said Victoria Espinel, president and CEO of software trade group BSA, the Software Alliance.

The strategy also makes clear that the U.S. plans to be aggressive against foreign adversaries who try to hack into American networks.

The U.S. “will use all instruments of national power to disrupt and dismantle threat actors whose actions threaten our interests,” the strategy says. This will include the Defense Department updating its cyber strategy to better integrate operations in cyberspace into overall defensive measures against adversary nations, and stepping up efforts to disrupt hacking groups that use ransomware to shut down networks and demand payments to turn services back on. A major part of this is declaring ransomware a national security threat, not just a criminal concern.

The strategy also outlines a plan to increase coordination across the federal government so that agencies can nimbly respond to a major cyberattack. According to the document, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency will update the National Cyber Incident Response Plan to enhance coordination across all agencies involved in cybersecurity issues, such as TSA or the Department of Energy.

On the international front, the strategy calls for the Biden administration to “develop mechanisms” to help identify when and how to respond to cyberattacks on other countries, such as the widespread attacks on Albania last year that were linked to Iran that the U.S. and other countries condemned.

While many experts praised the strategy’s overall approach, some key Republicans expressed opposition to the regulation portion of the plan. House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green (D-Tenn.) and cyber subcommittee Chair Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) said in a joint statement Thursday that the strategy only adds more “red tape.”

“The Biden administration must prioritize streamlining existing regulations while working with the private sector to identify new opportunities for partnership, rather than punishment, particularly through their implementation of this strategy,” Green and Garbarino said.

However, a number of Republicans and Democrats who have been involved in U.S. government cybersecurity efforts commended the overall approach.

“The notion that we can do this all on a voluntary basis, the risk-reward is just too great,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) said Thursday. He pointed to threats from nation states to critical infrastructure without more cybersecurity requirements, and warned that “we have still not seen the worst of Russian potential.”

Brian Harrell, the former assistant secretary for infrastructure protection at the Department of Homeland Security under the Trump administration, said new regulations will make it easier to make sure products are designed with more protections from the start.

“Building security into the product from the beginning, rather than a bolt-on after the fact is a more secure and cost-conscious approach,” Harrell said. “Of course, it’s not possible to eliminate all defects, but right now there’s little incentive — beyond just general market reputation — to invest in a dramatic reduction of cyber vulnerabilities.”

John Costello, who recently left the position as chief of staff to the Office of the National Cyber Director, said that new emphasis on regulation reflects a recognition within the government that there has been “a massive shift in the [technology] ecosystem” as the country has grown more reliant on digital service providers.

However, “regulation, legislation, and an understanding of that risk and opportunity has not kept pace with these changes,” he said. The strategy “finally aligns the U.S. government position with what analysts and public policy people have been calling on for years, which is all this stuff is great, but it isn’t working.”

Medak cops violated laws: Fact-finding team who visited Khadeer’s kin

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A fact-finding team of social activists visited the family, friends and neighbours of Mohammed Khadeer Khan, who died on February 21 following alleged police brutality. It concluded that the Medak police failed to follow the process of law and violated several provisions of CrPC, guidelines and judgments delivered by the Supreme Court and various High Courts in the cases of arrest and detention.

The team came out with 13 pointers report that suggests that Khadeer was tortured and attempts were made to erase the evidence.

Not just Khadeer, but his friend Rizwan and brother-in-law Moin were taken along with the victim and allegedly beaten for hours.

No specific complaint or FIR was registered against Khadeer. “It is merely on the basis of misidentification that he was arrested and tortured,” said the report.

Instead of producing before the regular judicial magistrate, Khadeer was produced before the executive magistrate, raising suspicions that he was arrested on mistaken identification due to footage from the CCTV camera.

“The Medak police personnel came to Hyderabad in a private vehicle (Swift car) with plain clothes and without name tags to arrest Khadeer, thus violating guidelines of the apex court laid down in DK Basu case in arresting and keeping accused in police custody. Moreover, police collected Khadeer’s call data records without any warrants,” the report said.

“It seems that police targeted Khadeer to hide their failure in arresting the real culprit involved in the theft case,” the report stated.

The report alleged that police hesitancy to provide timely medical treatment to Khadeer was “to save their own skin”.

Lastly, the fact-finding team has laid down recommendations to the Director General of Police (DGP). They are as follows:

    • Immediate safety and security to all witnesses including Rizwan and Moin who were present at the time of the torture.
    • Preservation of medical records and statements of doctors who treated Khadeer.
    • File FIRs against the erring police officers under 302 (Whoever commits murder shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as issue an immediate order to preserve the CCTV footage from January 29 to February 16.
    • Speedy trial by appointing a special magistrate and a separate bench.
    • Transfer of Medak’s superintendent of police for failing to take timely action against the erring police officials.
    • Training for police officials on how to conduct themselves with regards to an investigation as well as the approach with empathy towards the general public.
    • Compensation of Rs50 lakh and a government job to Khadeer’s widow by the state government.

“Khadeer was a daily wage worker. His family consists of four persons who were completely dependent on him. Now this family is rendered orphans without male support,” the report concluded.

The fact-finding team of social activists included Khalida Parveen, Murali Karnam, S.Q.Masood, Krishna Kumari, Manga, Deepthi, Kaneez Fathima, Kareema, Farisa Quadri, Naseem Sultana, Gayatri and Fariya.

Also exceptionally high figures at FC Groningen this weekend. The trio of Ricardo Pepi, Delaho Irandust and Tijmen Blokzijl received a 7.5 for their contribution to the 3-0 win over Excelsior.

FC Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall only suffers minor damage after his team’s loss against FC Twente, but Xavi Simons came a little closer.

Feyenoord captain Orkun Kökçü has become the best player of the months of January and February with an average rating of 6.88 after eight league matches since the World Cup. The Turkish international is ahead of his Slovak teammate David Hancko. In the top ten it is Feyenoord anyway, because Mats Wieffer (shared third) and Lutsharel Geertruida (shared fifth) are also in the top ten of the past two months.
