Saudi Arabia’s team arrives in Iran to discuss embassy reopening

    [ad_1]

Tehran: A technical delegation from Saudi Arabia has arrived in Iran to assess the situation and discuss the procedures for the reopening of the Saudi embassy and consulate general in the country.

Citing the Saudi Press Agency, Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) said that the trip comes following the agreements reached between the two countries in Beijing on the normalization of bilateral ties, Xinhua news agency reported.

It added during the trip, the Saudi delegation will visit Tehran to discuss the mechanism for reopening the country’s embassy here, and evaluate the situation for the reopening of the Saudi consulate general in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

Following their arrival, it said, the team members met with Mehdi Honardoost, director general of ceremonies at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, in Tehran and thanked the ministry’s officials for their warm welcome and for facilitating the delegation’s visit.

China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran announced on March 10 that the latter two had reached a deal that includes the agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions within two months.

In a meeting in Beijing on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud signed a joint statement, announcing the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 in response to the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shiite cleric.

MHA, IB Team To Review Security Arrangements For G20 Meet

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A team consisting of officials from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) arrived in Srinagar today to inspect the arrangements for the upcoming G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the security situation in the region. This visit will be followed by a two-day meeting in New Delhi on April 15 and 16, where the Jammu and Kashmir security scenario, with specific reference to the G20 meeting scheduled for May in Srinagar, will be discussed.

According to official sources, the Ministries of External Affairs and Home, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Government, are working to ensure a peaceful G20 meeting in Srinagar. They have taken steps to make security arrangements well in advance to prevent any untoward incidents in the Valley.

“In light of the security concerns, a team of senior officers from the MHA and IB arrived in Srinagar today and immediately held discussions with top police and intelligence officials to assess the security situation,” sources said, as per media reports.

“The Intelligence agencies have received information that the militants and their handlers in Pakistan are frustrated due to the successful elimination of militants, particularly their top commanders, and are unable to carry out attacks in the Valley. However, there is a possibility that they may resort to attacking soft targets prior to the G20 meeting, which is a significant international event in the region,” they added.

The MHA and IB team, as per sources, will meet with senior civil and police officials to comprehensively finalize security arrangements ahead of and during the G20 meeting in the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, particularly in the Valley. The summit venue and the locations visited by G20 delegates will be placed under a 24×7 security net almost a week before the scheduled summit date. Along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) will provide security for the venue, places visited by delegates, and other vulnerable areas where militants could target. As per sources, all such areas will be fully secured.

According to sources, both the Central and Jammu and Kashmir Governments are committed to ensuring foolproof security arrangements for the upcoming G20 meeting. The visiting team, comprising officials from the MHA and IB, will also assess the general security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Intelligence agencies have expressed concerns about the possibility of militants striking in the lead-up to the summit, particularly in districts with little militant presence. The team is working to prevent any such incidents from occurring.

After the team returns to New Delhi, the MHA is likely to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on April 15 and 16,” sources said. “The meeting will cover topics such as the G20 summit and the upcoming annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath shrine.

Despite the fact that the SASB has yet to announce dates for the pilgrimage, rumors suggest that the Yatra may last around 60 days this year. As a result, additional paramilitary forces may need to be deployed by the Union Home Ministry. Top civil and police officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Government are regularly reviewing all aspects of the G20 summit, including security, accommodation, and places to visit.

SRINAGAR: Kiran Patel, an alleged conman facing a new case of fraud in Ahmedabad, is being transported by a police team from the city’s crime branch. They departed from Srinagar by road and are expected to arrive in Ahmedabad by Monday evening.

“The police team has left for Ahmedabad from Srinagar on Sunday morning after completing the procedure. He is being brought via road and will reach in 36 hours,” reported The Indian Express, quoting Chaitanya Mandlik, the deputy commissioner of police city crime branch.

  • One’s a tactician, the other’s a showman. Meet Trump’s defense team.

    One’s a tactician, the other’s a showman. Meet Trump’s defense team.

    [ad_1]

trump legal troubles key people 01199

People who know them say the two lawyers have very different styles — she’s an understated tactician and he’s a colorful showman, “bombastic,” in his own words — but both have built their careers in New York courtrooms.

In separate interviews, Necheles and Tacopina said they have a productive working relationship — Tacopina described it as “harmonious,” adding that they would likely add a third member to the team who specializes in election law.

And both called their relationship with Trump “respectful.”

“Of course I’ve worked with difficult clients over the years in some cases, and you just try to make them have confidence in you,” Necheles said.

Still, Trump’s recent remarks about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg — calling him an “animal” and “racist” — could complicate his lawyers’ ability to work productively with prosecutors.

Necheles dismissed any concerns, saying, “Trump is a little bit more verbal about it and out there” in his criticism of the office. But, she added: “Of course he doesn’t like them. They’re trying to ruin his life.”

Tacopina said the case is in some ways unremarkable and in others extraordinary. “On one hand, this is a belly-of-the-beast, 100 Centre Street, low-level case that should be treated this way. On the other hand, this is the former president of the United States, so we have to be cognizant of that,” he said, referring to the street address for Manhattan Criminal Court where Trump will be tried.

“I’m buckling my seatbelt,” he added. “Let’s put it that way.”

Neither lawyer would discuss their strategy for the Trump case, but both have a history of deploying creative gambits on behalf of their clients. Necheles once used a “divine defense” on behalf of a developer accused of fleecing ultra-orthodox Jewish clients, telling a jury he had received a blessing from a rabbi to build affordable housing. “It was a mitzvah to him, a Hebrew word that means a good deed and an obligation,” she said.

During the trial of a former New York state senator accused of theft, she showed jurors a blown-up image of an apple, while a piece of the fruit sat on the defense table in front of her client. “There’s something rotten about this case,” she told jurors.

Meanwhile, Tacopina helped a rapper named Sticky Fingaz, who faced a gun possession charge that was later dropped, slip into the courthouse undetected by paparazzi.

Tacopina accompanied his driver — who posed as the rapper by donning a hat and sunglasses — through the front entrance while the rapper slipped through another door. Tacopina laughed at the suggestion that he would try to pull a similar stunt with Trump. “I have no tricks up my sleeve here,” he said. “This is the Secret Service’s show here, not mine.”

Tacopina also has some experience navigating choppy relationships between Trump world and its investigators — though not always with favorable results for his clients. Last year, when he represented Guilfoyle before the Jan. 6 committee, Tacopina accused the committee of blindsiding them by allowing some of the panel’s Democratic members to attend the proceeding and she walked shortly after it started. Her premature departure resulted in the committee issuing a subpoena for Guilfoyle’s testimony that ultimately compelled her return for a lengthy interview about her involvement in planning and fundraising for Trump’s Jan. 6 rally.

  • ‘O.J. Simpson on steroids’: Team Trump preps for a post-indictment frenzy

‘O.J. Simpson on steroids’: Team Trump preps for a post-indictment frenzy

    [ad_1]

Trump was in Florida at his Mar-a-lago resort when the news of the indictment came down. Both he and his advisers were blindsided by it, people close to the former president say.

But while the news was sudden, their preparations for it weren’t. Over the past two weeks, Trump and his campaign have been keeping tabs on which Republicans were dismissing the case and boosting the ex-president. After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared to mock Trump during a press conference last week for finding himself in a scandal with a porn actress, Trump lashed out, insinuating DeSantis would soon experience false accusations of his own. Unsatisfied with that Truth Social post, Trump deleted it and replaced it with another that went even further, not only suggesting without evidence DeSantis could be faced with allegations from not only a woman but a man, too, and that it could also come from someone “underage.”

The message was deliberate and unambiguous: Defend me or else. When the time came on Thursday, Trump’s fellow Republicans did just that. DeSantis, seen as the leading 2024 primary opponent to Trump, called the indictment “un-American,” and said he would not assist with any extradition request (Trump’s lawyers have said he will turn himself in). RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel called the news “a blatant abuse of power from a DA focused on political vengeance instead of keeping people safe.” And in a pre-recorded video message, GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called the indictment “wrong” and said the country was “skating on thin ice.”

While many Republicans believe the indictment could boost Trump’s prospects by further solidifying his already-loyal base of supporters, they are also sanguine about the long-term damage it might cause. The case being brought against Trump is historic (no ex-president has ever been indicted). And future charges stemming from his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, and his possession of classified documents loom and could harm him even more in a general election, should he end up the nominee.

    trump indictment 58318

The Manhattan district attorney’s office asked for Donald Trump to surrender on Friday following a grand jury’s vote to indict the former president.

But lawyers for Trump rebuffed the request saying that the Secret Service, which provides security detail for the former president, needed more time to prepare.

The exchange, which was relayed to POLITICO by a law-enforcement source and confirmed by Joe Tacopina, a lawyer for the former president, underscores the extremely delicate, unprecedented nature of the indictment. Until Thursday, no ex-president in history had been criminally charged. And both the charges itself and the application of them have placed the country on uncharted legal and political terrain.

Legal team working on Rahul Gandhi’s case: Mallikarjun Kharge

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said that a legal team is working on the case in which former INC chief Rahul Gandhi was convicted by a Gujarat court following which he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha.

Kharge said that the party is ready to face the matter “politically and legally”, and also criticised the Central government for disqualifying Rahul Gandhi “in haste”.

The Congress president termed the disqualification “vengeance”.

As a mark of protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha, and to press its demand for a probe into the allegations of fraud levelled against the Adani Group, the Congress has launched ‘Jai Bharat Satyagraha’ across the country against the Centre .

The party has set up a war room to monitor the ‘Satyagraha’, which will culminate in Delhi with a rally.

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal had said: “The ‘Jai Bharat Satyagraha’ is a protest against the erroneous conviction and disqualification of Rahul Gandhi, and to express the party’s strong resolve to keep raising the voice of the people against the blatant loot of people’s money and nation’s wealth.”

As part of the programmes planned to be organised during the protest, all block/mandal units of the Congress will hold ‘nukkad sabhas’ and address the public on relevant issues.

Social media campaigns focusing on Rahul Gandhi’s message to the people will also be carried out to appeal for public support for the ‘Satyagraha’.

Swiss football fans raise flag of Palestine in match against Israeli team

    [ad_1]

The Swedish fans raised the Palestinian flag during the football match that took place on Wednesday evening, between the Swedish team and the “Israeli team” in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The Swiss national team achieved its second victory in the qualifiers, and destroyed the goal of Israel three times, in the match that took place at the Geneva stadium, for the second round of the Group Nine matches of the Euro qualifiers.

Dozens of pictures and video clips of fans flying the Palestinian flag and some banners denouncing the occupation and the policy of apartheid on the stands of the Geneva stadium were spread on social media.

One of the videos showed dozens of fans raising Palestinian flags, while they interacted with the sound of music inside the stadium, as it seemed that it was raised in the face of the Israeli players.

PACBI account on Twitter, which belongs to the Palestinian campaign for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel, which challenges Israeli apartheid, through academic, cultural and sports campaigns, published pictures of Swiss fans raising the Palestinian flag.

The account commented on the photos, saying, “Wonderful, during the Switzerland-Israel match in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, amazing support for the rights of the Palestinians, and against the Israeli apartheid regime.”

He added, “The campaign of solidarity with Palestine and the fight against racism, and the student and sports groups promised to raise the red card in the face of Israeli apartheid, and they did!”

    Previous cases

European countries witnessed similar events when it came to the presence of an Israeli team on their soil, as dozens of people demonstrated around the Tallaght stadium in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, in September 2022, before the start of their national team’s match against “Israel” U-21.
