Threat calls to minister Gadkari: NIA team arrives in Nagpur for investigation

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrived in Nagpur on Tuesday to conduct a probe into threatening phone calls made to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a police official said.

The calls were allegedly made by a murder convict, Jayesh Pujari alias Kantha, who was arrested from a jail in Belagavi, Karnataka, and booked under the anti-terror law UAPA.

A senior official of the Nagpur police said the NIA had registered a case at Bengaluru and the Mumbai unit of the central agency was directed to conduct an investigation.

    MS Education Academy

A team of the NIA arrived in Nagpur from Mumbai and started collecting documents and crucial leads regarding the case, he said.

Exploring the suspected role of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terror outfit, and the underworld in the episode are the main focus of the investigation, said the official.

On January 14, Pujari made a threatening call to Gadkari’s public relations office in Nagpur, demanding Rs 100 crore and claiming to be a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, according to the police.

At that time, he was lodged in a jail in neighbouring Karnataka.

He made another call on March 21, threatening to harm the BJP Lok Sabha MP from Nagpur if Rs 10 crore was not paid to him, the police said.

Pujari was arrested and brought to Nagpur on March 28 from a jail in Belagavi city of Karnataka, and the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was invoked against him.

After receiving the green signal from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, NIA officials launched an investigation on terror angle as Pujari had relations with terrorists, including Lashkar-e-Taiba’s South Division chief Captain Naseer, said the official.

The murder convict had also taken arms training in the North-East, he added.

Vivek Agnihotri: ‘The Kerala Story’ team will get ‘unimaginable hate’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri on Saturday told cast and crew of ‘The Kerala Story’ that their lives will not be the same as they “will receive unimaginable hate”.

Taking to Twitter, the filmmaker posted a note telling the team of ‘The Kerala Story’ about the “bad news.”

“CINEMA AND INDIC RENNIASANCE: The Kerala Story. I grew up listening to great filmmakers and cinema critics that the only purpose of art is to provoke people into questioning their own beliefs and biases. I also grew up listening that cinema reflects the reality of a society. I was told that cinema must destroy old Gods and create new Gods,” Vivek started the thread on Twitter.

    MS Education Academy

“I have come to realise that in modern times, cinema has the power to do what media and politics can’t do. It can present uncomfortable reality, correct history, fight culture war and also become the soft power of a nation for larger interest. In India, making such cinema is not easy.”

“I tried it with Buddha in A Traffic Jam, The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. I have been physically, professionally, socially and psychologically assaulted.”

He said that his forthcoming film ‘The Vaccine War’, a positive film, celebrating India’s greatest achievement, is constantly being attacked.

“Mostly by the same people who taught me all the above. When it releases, later this year, I can guarantee they will attack it with a new design because they don’t want India to succeed. Because Truth must not be told. Bharat must not be celebrated,” added the filmmaker.

Lending support, he added: “Dear Vipul Shah & @sudiptoSENtlm, @adah_sharma and team of #TheKeralaStory, first let me congratulate you for the brave effort. At the same time, let me also give you the bad news that from here on, your lives will not be the same. You will receive unimaginable hate.

“Your will feel suffocated. Many times you may get confused and demoralised. But remember, God tests the shoulders on which he can put the responsibility of becoming the change agents,” he tweeted.

“If cinema is a medium to follow your course of Dharma, never stop. Let the community of Indic storytellers grow. Help new, young talented, Indic storytellers. Let this Indic Renaissance become the guiding light of a New Bharat. And whenever you feel nobody is understanding you, remember Gurudev’s lines: Ekla Chalo Re. Best. Always. With love, VRA,” concluded his post.

‘The Kerala Story’ has been written and directed by Sudipto Sen and stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani.

It got into controversy after the trailer of the film stated that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, IS.

BJP team blames Odisha’s BJD govt for Sambalpur violence, demands CBI probe

    [ad_1]

Sambalpur: The BJP MP’s team that visited Sambalpur, the scene of violence between two communities during Hanuman Jayanti processions last month, on Tuesday, “blamed” the BJD government in Odisha for it and demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Three members of the team – Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha member Brij Lal, party MP from Jharkhand Samir Oraon and Jyotirmay Singh Mahato from West Bengal visited the western Odisha city and will submit their report to BJP president J P Nadda.

During the visit, the team members interacted with Biswanath Sikka alias Kalia of Bhawanipali, who was injured in the incident. However, they could not meet the family of Chandrakant Mirdha, a tribal, of Jharmunda village, who was murdered on April 14.

    MS Education Academy

Talking to reporters, Brij Lal, who led the delegation, said, the violence during the bike rally on April 12 was a “planned” incident.

The ruling Biju Janata Dal strongly opposed the BJP team’s visit to the violence hit Sambalpur and said that the saffron party would be “held responsible” if there is any recurrence of violence in the region.

“These people want violence to prevail and therefore instigating communities. The BJP team visits the place as they have no faith in police, administration, national human rights commission or even the national commission for ST,” BJD Mahila wing president Snehangini Chhuria told reporters at a press conference in Jharsuguda.

Brij Lal told reporters that the special branch of Odisha police had alerted the state government about the possibility of the violence. Even the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had also issued an advisory. But the deployment of police in such a sensitive place, where the violence took place on April 12, was “very poor”.

“This is not all, even police were not equipped to deal the situation. Anti-national slogans were raised during the rally. It is the complete failure of the state government and the police. Had there been adequate deployment, the violence could have been averted”, he said.

Brij Lal further said, the man who was murdered was the only son of the family. However, “we could not meet the family as the house was closed. Surprisingly, the administration has no answer on the whereabouts of the family,” he said and alleged that the tribal tradition had not been followed while performing the last rites of the tribal man, Chandarakant Mirdha.

The Sambalpur Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar said that police arrested at least six persons in connection with Mirdha’s murder.

His death had nothing to do with the violence in the city on April 12 and 14, the SP claimed, adding that many people including 10 police personnel were injured and a number of shops gutted during the clash.

The city was placed under curfew for several days and internet services were suspended in view of the violence.

Brij Lal said: “We met Biswanath Sikka who was injured in the incident and interacted with him. We also interacted with the different civil society organizations. During the visit, we found that the violence in Sambalpur was result of complete failure of the BJD.” He accused the BJD of doing appeasement politics.

“We will submit a report to our national president JP Nadda over the entire incident. We also demand the state government to write to the union government for investigation into the entire incident by CBI in assistance with the National Investigation Agency (NIA),” he said.

CBI team at ex-JK guv Satya Pal Malik’s Delhi residence

New Delhi: The CBI will on Friday question former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik in connection with its probe in the alleged insurance “scam” in the Union Territory which came to light after his statement that he was offered bribes to clear related files, officials said.

A CBI team arrived around 11.45 am at the Som Vihar residence of Malik in the RK Puram area of the national capital to seek clarifications from him on his claims, they said.

Malik is not an accused or a suspect in the case so far, they said.

    MS Education Academy

This is the second time in seven months that Malik, who has served as the governor of various states, will be quizzed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

His statement was recorded in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya.

After the latest CBI notice to seek clarifications from him, Malik had tweeted, “I have exposed the sins of some people by speaking the truth. Maybe that’s why I have been called. I am the son of a farmer, I will not panic. I stand by the truth.”

The CBI registered two FIRs in connection with the corruption allegations levelled by Malik in the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees, and civil work worth Rs 2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik had claimed he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe for clearing two files during his tenure as the Jammu and Kashmir governor between August 23, 2018 and October 30, 2019.

This development comes after Malik’s recent remarks in an interview with The Wire where he stated that the government was to blame for the Pulwama massacre.

Satya Pal Malik, the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir who oversaw heightened times that include the abrogation of Article 370, stated in an interview that the Prime Minister squelched him by saying “tum abhi chup raho” when he as governor reported that the Centre’s own mistakes were to blame for the Pulwama massacre.

Malik also said that the Prime Minister is ‘ill-informed’ and ‘does not hate corruption very much’ in an interview with journalist Karan Thapar for The Wire news portal that was posted on Friday night.

Malik mentioned the bombing of the CRPF convoy in Pulwama in February 2019 which claimed the lives of 40 jawans and was turned into an election issue by the BJP in the interview.

“CRPF members requested an aircraft to transport their members because such a sizable convoy seldom travels by road. They enquired the home ministry. They refused to give. They only required 5 aircraft, but they weren’t provided with any,” Malik said.

He recalled the Prime Minister calling him on the evening of February 14, 2019, from outside the Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand.

‘Better team lost’: Emma Hayes says Chelsea had Barcelona panicking

    [ad_1]

Emma Hayes said she was proud of her players following their Champions League semi-final exit after a 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou was not enough to overturn the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

“For us, we’re not going through because of the home tie,” said Hayes. “It’s very difficult to come here. If there was a little bit longer in the game, I think we would have gone on and won it. But I can’t ask for any more, I don’t know many teams that can come here and put them under pressure. They were panicking, you could hear it on the touchline. Even their manager got booked, they’re not used to that.”

The England defender Niamh Charles said: “We did not come here simply to soak up Barça pressure and then play on the break. We tried to balance knowing where and when to push and press but also when to sit and hold at the right time, because we respect them. Across this and the first leg, it’s about fine details. We’ll come again next year.”

Guro Reiten’s goal for Chelsea came four minutes after her compatriot Caroline Graham Hansen had extended Barcelona’s lead in the tie to two goals. It was a moment to stun the home crowd, which is not used to seeing Barcelona conceding given that the Catalan giants have let in just five goals in the league this season. At the Camp Nou this season in the WCL they had previously beaten Rosengard 6-0, Roma 5-1 and Bayern Munich 3-0: an average of 4.6 goals per game.

“Look at the previous results here,” said Hayes. “I don’t think you understand how challenging it is playing in this stadium with an unbeaten record in the last four years. You have to stay in football matches. I can’t criticise our performance tonight. We’re going out in the competition because of the home leg. Today, I think the better team lost.”

Hayes added that “the gap is closing across Europe and today’s performance was evidence of that.”

Responding to the claim that the better team had lost, Barcelona manager Jonatan Giráldez said: “I think there [at Stamford Bridge] we were better. For me, the result there was tighter than it should have been and in the return leg we were superior as well in general. We dominated almost the entire game.”

    banned books 42784

The early focus on book banning is part of the campaign’s attempt to reinforce a broader message, said one Democratic adviser involved in the effort: Biden is the only one standing between the American people and a Republican Party determined to roll back rights and limit freedoms.

“People just don’t understand why we should ban books from libraries,” said the adviser, who spoke with candor about the campaign’s strategy on the condition of anonymity. “So it’s a measure of extremism and another thing [Republicans] are trying to take away.”

Biden’s message is based on mounds of research by Democratic pollsters over the last several months, as the president’s advisers and the Democratic National Committee have expanded the constellation of pollsters and data analysts tracking voter attitudes and the effectiveness of certain messages.

The potency of book bans, along with issues like abortion and gun safety, is quite clear, according to multiple people familiar with the campaign’s data.

“Book banning tests off the charts,” said Celinda Lake, one of the Democratic pollsters who tested the issue for Democrats. “People are adamantly opposed to it and, unlike some other issues that are newer, voters already have an adopted schema around book banning. They associate it with really authoritarian regimes, Nazi Germany.”

The campaign’s private research aligns with public polling on the issue. A CBS News/YouGov poll in February found that more than 8 in 10 Americans opposed GOP efforts to ban books that focus on slavery, the civil rights movement and an unsanitized version of American history. And a Fox News survey this week found that 60 percent of Americans — including 48 percent of Republicans — find book bans problematic.

Republicans led by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who appears likely to run for president, have leaned into the culture wars by leading efforts to bar those books, and others about LGBTQ topics. They’ve framed the push as an effort to protect social indoctrination via school curriculum. Lake sees it as a political gift to Biden.

“You’ll see Democrats up and down the ticket running on this,” she said.

But book bans don’t just rankle parents of children under 18, who account for just less than 30 percent of the electorate. Some of the strongest responses in focus groups to GOP book bans came from Baby Boomers.

The Biden campaign has leaned hard into the contrast of “more freedom or less freedom,” as the president put it in his announcement video, co-opting a quintessentially American idea and a political theme more traditionally emphasized by Republicans.

In the TV spot pushed out Wednesday, Biden pointed to GOP restrictions in many areas — abortion rights, voting rights — election denialism and the party’s inaction on gun safety all under the umbrella of freedom. But polling and focus group research found that the messaging around book bans appealed in particular to moderates and swing voters who may have nuanced views on gender and identity but are far more clear-eyed about being told what books they can or can’t read.

Those voters — which include moderate Republicans, suburban voters and college-educated white people — are among the demographics that Biden’s team believes will be critical to win. They are also more likely to live in areas where conservatives have sought to impose restrictions on libraries and school boards.

“Americans have a libertarian streak about them, and this is an absolute affront to that tendency,” the adviser said. “This is much more about reassembling the coalition from 2020.”

Sarah Longwell, a Republican strategist prominent within her party’s more outspoken cadre of Never Trump activists, said that book bans have occasionally come up in her focus groups with voters.

“When we talk about them, usually in the context of DeSantis, these are the things that play very poorly with educated suburban voters,” she said, surmising that the campaign’s emphasis on book bans is at least partly about laying the groundwork for a general election match-up with DeSantis.

“They are positioning themselves to take on any candidate and to fight for those swing voters who put them over the top in 2020 and who are uncomfortable with some of the more extreme positions DeSantis and others are embracing,” Longwell said.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case against a person, who cheated Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his son, Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Udhayanidhi Stalin, by claiming to be the captain of the Indian cricket team for persons with Disabilities.

The wheelchair-bound person, Vinoth Babu met the Chief Minister and later Udhayanidhi Stalin and claimed that he was the captain of the Indian cricket team for persons with disabilities. He also got his pictures clicked with the Chief Minister and Sports minister with a fake trophy.

He had claimed that his team had won the world tournament for the Disabled hosted in Pakistan. The photograph of Vinoth Babu with the Chief Minister and Udhayanidhi Stalin went viral and led the original Indian team members to sound an alert.

U.S. planning to send a consular team to Sudan to assist fleeing Americans

    [ad_1]

    sudan evacuations 81969

The Biden administration has repeatedly vowed it would not organize a large-scale evacuation operation like in Kabul. But President Joe Biden’s team has authorized the use of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets to assure the safety of evacuating convoys and placed assets in the region for contingencies.

Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesperson, did not confirm the fly away team planning. There has been “no current change in our posture when it comes to our personnel in Sudan,” he said.

The State Department has asked the military for logistical support to move the fly away team, which is currently in Djibouti working to complete the necessary paperwork, to the Port of Sudan, according to a Defense Department official. Another person, a former U.S. official, said the fly away team was assembled and making the necessary preparations for the Port of Sudan deployment. Both were granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive operation.

The Pentagon is looking at options to move the team by ship or by air, the DoD official said. This could include making the 800-mile trip on MV-22 Ospreys stationed in Djibouti, or traveling on one of the nearby U.S. Navy ships.

The U.S. government is currently looking at “what’s the fastest, safest way” to get the consular team to the port, the official said. At the moment, the military “has not been tasked to do anything other than position ships in case they are needed.”

One option to move the team by sea is the destroyer USS Truxtun, which is already on standby off the Port of Sudan. A number of other ships are en route to the region, including the expeditionary sea base USS Lewis B. Puller, which can act as a floating base or transfer station, and the expeditionary fast transport USNS Brunswick, operated by the Military Sealift Command and designed to rapidly move troops or equipment, according to the DoD official.

There is also an additional supply ship en route to sustain the ships in the region, the DoD official said.

The news that the U.S. is planning to send a consular team to Sudan comes days after a U.S. special forces team conducted a daring mission into the country to evacuate U.S. embassy personnel from Khartoum. About 100 troops made the trip from Djibouti to the capital in three MH-47 twin-rotor transport aircraft, a heavily armed version of the CH-47 Chinook piloted by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as the “Night Stalkers.”

  • Biden’s campaign launch is immediately overshadowed by other events — and his team loves it

Biden’s campaign launch is immediately overshadowed by other events — and his team loves it

    [ad_1]

Biden’s announcement came on a day when the leading Republican contender to challenge him, former President Donald Trump, began a trial where he is accused of rape. Another GOP hopeful, Nikki Haley, delivered a speech reaffirming the party’s commitment to restricting access to abortion, an issue that continues to galvanize voters on both sides perhaps more than any other.

The most powerful Republican on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is fighting to wrangle his unruly caucus to get behind a proposal to tie major spending cuts to any debt ceiling increase, setting up another dramatic vote on the House floor as early as Wednesday. And the smoke is still just clearing from the sudden firings Monday of two outsized media personalities, Tucker Carlson by Fox and Don Lemon by CNN.

The chaotic tableau was not just a revealing snapshot of a particularly frenetic American moment — it may foreshadow the campaign to come, too. Biden, as he was at times during last year’s midterms, could find himself relegated to the background, as more extreme characters dominate the news and the nation’s collective consciousness. Rather than fret their second-fiddle fate, the president’s advisers find it advantageous.

“I go back to the first election, where he presented himself as… someone who is steady, someone who is thoughtful, someone who keeps his eyes on the prize,” said Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), one of the Biden campaign’s co-chairs. It is not, she added, about “the antics of the moment.”

For an incumbent eager to frame the next election, as he did last year’s, as a choice and not a referendum on his own record, being somewhat out of the spotlight’s glare has its benefits. Biden’s team wants to present him as a trusted, experienced politician; the drama-free alternative to extremism on the right. The media’s focus on louder, more strident voices — and his own innate unobtrusiveness — are not just an outgrowth of circumstances but also a key part of his campaign’s strategy.

“None of this backdrop to Biden’s announcement is a coincidence. It’s all part of the same reckoning that the country is going through,” said Jennifer Palmieri, who served as communications director on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign. “When Biden ran the first time, he was talking about being a transitional president. He’s talking about ‘finishing the job’ because we have not completed this transition. We are still in this epic fight where big questions about democracy and fundamental rights are at stake.”

Biden’s 2020 victory over Trump and Democrats’ ability to defy historical headwinds last November and far surpass the party’s midterm expectations, Palmieri added, showed that “Biden and Democrats don’t have to be top of the news to win. They just have to make sure voters understand what’s at stake.”

Executing such a strategy is a bit easier when running against a sitting president rather than running as one. And, over the coming months, Biden world’s efforts to run as the drama-free, more competent alternative to what the Republican Party is offering will be tested by that Republican Party’s attempts to create drama and frame him as inept.

In his campaign launch video, Biden took the first step towards trying to set the contours of the debate. The video focused on Republican extremism in setting up the rationale for his campaign. It highlighted the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, the conservative Supreme Court’s decision striking down federal protections for abortion and GOP efforts at the state level to ban books, limit early voting and restrict transgender rights, as well as Republicans’ inaction on gun safety amid a surge of mass shootings. “MAGA extremists,” Biden says in the video, are “lining up to take away those bedrock freedoms.”

That’s a shift from last year’s focus on Democrats’ legislative accomplishments over Biden’s first two years in office. The White House has launched a major publicity blitz to tout the benefits of new laws — the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Chips Act boosting America’s tech sector and the Inflation Reduction Act, which has led to $200 billion in new investments in renewable energy projects. But none of those laws were referenced in the president’s three-minute launch video.

Instead, Biden focused on those accomplishments during a lunchtime speech at the annual meeting of the North America’s Building Trades Unions, a gathering that represents a critical piece of the president’s political base. The speech was an official address, with the only flourish from the just-launched campaign effort being Biden’s new “finish the job” catchphrase.

“Under my predecessor, Infrastructure Week was a punchline. On my watch, we’re making Infrastructure Decade a headline,” Biden said, addressing the audience directly. “Union workers will build roads and bridges, lay internet cable, install electric vehicle chargers. Union workers are going to transform America. And union workers are going to finish the job!”

Those remarks occurred, however, shortly after CNN cut away from live coverage of the speech, which was a familiar rehash of the president’s well worn economic message.

Biden world has long scoffed at the notion that they should gear their approach around the whims of cable or Twitter at that. And the campaign’s strategy with its launch day, which also featured Vice President Kamala Harris speaking about reproductive rights at an event in Maryland, appeared to reflect a broader awareness about how Americans consume their news now. With the initial video push, followed by two events featuring Biden and Harris that could practically be turned into videos themselves, the campaign will be able to reach a number of constituencies with multiple messages. Creating banner headlines on cable TV, it seems, was not the point.

Biden’s former communications director Kate Bedingfield, who CNN opted to interview from a Washington studio rather than carrying Biden’s remarks, made it clear that the president isn’t especially reliant on the mainstream media. His team often prefers to engage with content creators with large followings or to package the president’s comments themselves for distribution via social media platforms and email lists.

“We’re living in an incredibly fractured media environment, and so the president and his team have to think about how do we reach people where they’re actually getting their news,” Bedingfield said.

With polls showing a majority of Americans preferring that Biden not seek a second term, the campaign team has its work cut out for them. The task being to gin up support from your own base while keeping yourself off of center stage can, at times, be in conflict. But there is one way to do both: focusing attention on the Republican alternative.

“Republicans nominating Trump again plays right into Biden’s message,” GOP pollster Whit Ayres conceded. “Biden only won in 2020 by a hair in the Electoral College, and he has significant problems now. But his unobtrusiveness is not one of them. In part, that’s what he ran on: not being in your face every day.”

Jennifer Haberkorn contributed to this report.
