Tata Electronics to become a key Apple player after Wistron’s iPhone plant acquisition

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Apple doubles down on local manufacturing in India, Taiwan-based iPhone manufacturer Wistron is reportedly winding up its operations in the country and Tata Electronics is set to take over Wistron’s Karnataka factory and manufacture new Apple products.

The move will only give a fillip to the government’s local manufacturing dream, at a time when iPhone exports from the country surged to cross $5 billion (over Rs 40,000 crore) in FY23.

Wistron’s factory in Karnataka, that employs about 12,000 people, constitutes a major chunk of its business in the country.

According to a report in Hindu Business Line, Wistron will be winding down its operations and is “likely to approach the National Company Law Tribunal and the Registrar of Companies to dissolve its India operations within the next year.”

The 150-year-old Tata Group has taken several measures to step up its business with Apple in the recent past.

Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS that the ‘Make in India’ initiative is set to gain even more momentum with the emergence of homegrown majors, such as Tata Electronics, “and the possibility of concurrent production of the Apple iPhone 15 and beyond.”

“As we progress, these initial steps will undoubtedly bolster India’s semiconductor ecosystem and strengthen its position in the global electronics value chains,” Ram added.

According to the report, Wistron is also waiting for some subsidy payments under the smartphone production-linked (PLI) scheme, before it winds down its India operations.

In FY23, Apple shipped more than 7 million iPhones and half a million iPads in the country, registering a 28 percent growth for iPhone shipments, according to initial estimates provided by market intelligence firm CMR.

As Apple doubles down on domestic manufacturing in India, the tech giant is likely to garner 6 percent market share in FY23-34, with selling more than 8 million iPhones in the country in the period.

In such a scenario, Tata Group is hopeful of India becoming an electronics manufacturing hub after the conglomerate succeeded in its efforts to take over Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant, according to earlier reports.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Airbus has awarded Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) a contract to produce cargo and bulk cargo doors for the A320neo aircraft series.

According to a press release, TASL will manufacture these doors at a new facility in Hyderabad utilising cutting-edge robotics and automation technologies, and each shipset will have two cargo doors and one bulk cargo door.

The deal was signed here on Wednesday by Airbus Senior Vice President (Aerostructure Procurement) Olivier Cauquil and TASL Vice President (Aerostructure and Aero-Engines) Masood Hussainy.

Airbus now purchases components and services worth $735 million per year from over 100 Indian vendors.

Airbus India and South Asia president and Managing Director Remi Maillard said: “When it comes to supporting the development of India’s industrial capacities, Airbus is walking the talk. The latest contract underlines our continued commitment to ‘Make-in-India’ for an AatmaNirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).”

“In TASL, we have a most trusted and able partner that will support the ramp-up of our A320neo family aircraft that has been the poster child of democratisation and transformation of India’s aviation sector. We will continue to grow our industrial footprint and the aviation and aerospace ecosystem at a fast pace in India,” Maillard said.

Commenting on the contract, TASL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sukaran Singh said, “We have an ongoing relationship with Airbus based on trust and operational excellence, and this new contract win will further bolster our partnership in aerospace manufacturing in India.”

Airbus will also build the C295 military aircraft Final Assembly Line (FAL) with TASL in Gujarat, the first concrete, large-scale Make-in-India manufacturing aerospace programme in the private sector.

Gujarat govt paid Rs 16,900 cr in two years to Adani, Tata firms to buy electricity

    [ad_1]

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has paid Rs 16,900 crore to Adani Power and Tata Power for purchasing electricity during the last two years, the state Assembly was informed on Monday.

As per the data tabled by Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai during Question Hour, the state government paid Rs 8,160 crore to Adani Power Mundra Ltd while Rs 8,784 was paid to Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, in 2021 and 2022.

While responding to a set of questions raised by Congress MLAs about the purchase of electricity from these private players, Desai said the state government paid Rs 2,760 crore to Adani Power in 2021 to buy 5,589 million units while Rs 5,400 crore was paid to the firm in 2022 for nearly 6,000 million units.

In 2021, the state government paid Rs 2,751 crore to Tata Power to buy 7,315 million units, while the cost came to Rs 6,033 crore for 10,446 million units in 2022.

The data suggested per unit cost of Rs 2.83 paid to Adani in January 2021 went up to Rs 8.83 per unit in December 2022 (provisional). Similarly, Tata Power charged Rs 4.92 per unit from the government in 2022 against Rs 1.80 in January 2021.

Desai said the per unit cost of electricity went up after 2018 due to “exponential rise” in the price of imported coal, which had forced such power generators to shut their plants in Gujarat.

To ensure people of Gujarat get uninterrupted power, the state government had signed new supplementary agreements with Adani to pay as per the actual cost of fuel, said Desai.

Again in 2021, when gas and imported coal prices saw significant rise, the state government, to ensure uninterrupted power supply, bought electricity from these firms under “special temporary arrangement” as approved by the Centre and state government, Desai said in the Assembly.

  • Tata Steel to manufacture 22 Vande Bharat trains in next one year

Tata Steel to manufacture 22 Vande Bharat trains in next one year

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has signed an agreement with Tata Steel under which the company will manufacture 22 trains of the country’s fastest and feature-rich Vande Bharat Express in the coming year.

The Ministry of Railways has set a production target of 200 Vande Bharat trains for the next two years, besides setting a target to run the first sleeper version of Vande Bharat by the first quarter of 2024.

Keeping this in view, an agreement has been signed between Indian Railways and Tata Steel on several schemes to speed up the production work.

The seats in the Vande Bharat Express, from first AC to three-tier coaches, will now be manufactured by Tata Steel. The contract for making Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches of the train has also been given to the company, under which structures of panels, windows and railways are being prepared.

Under the scheme, at present, the Indian Railways has given a tender of about Rs 145 crore to the multinational steel company for manufacturing the parts of the train, which is to be completed in 12 months.

The composites division of Tata Steel started working in this direction after receiving a bulk order for seating system of Vande Bharat Express, including 22 train sets with 16 coaches each.

Debashish Bhattacharya, Vice President (Technology and New Materials Business), Tata Steel, said: “The seats of this train are specially designed, which can rotate up to 180-degree and have aircraft-like passenger amenities which are a first in India.”

According to sources, Tata Steel is constantly engaged in increasing its stake in the Railways and has also posted officials for coordinating with the Railways.

  • Air India’s 1 yr under Tata: Controversies cloud turnaround & transformation

Air India’s 1 yr under Tata: Controversies cloud turnaround & transformation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In the first year of its acquisition from the Centre, Air India not only took major steps in terms of turnaround and transformation but also ran into major controversies on issues ranging from pilots’ discontent to inept handling of certain sensitive matters.

After 69 years as a Government-owned enterprise, Air India and Air India Express were welcomed back into the Tata group on January 27, 2022.

Hailing its performance, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson on Friday said, “Taken together, the progress over the last 12 months has been nothing short of stunning, even if so much of what we have been working on has been behind the scenes, building platforms and capabilities so that our future ambitions can take flight. There is of course much more that needs to be done, and everyone – internally and externally – is hungry for us to do it,” he said.

However, the Tata management courted its first set of controversies with the appointment of Ilker Ayci, a former Chairman of Turkish Airlines, as the CEO and MD of the airline in February 2022. The appointment raised eyebrows with RSS affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch expressing its reservations about the Tata Group appointing former Turkish Airlines chairman as Air India’s Managing Director and CEO. Amid controversies, the appointment of Ilker Ayci could not last as he turned down the job.

Thereafter, Air India senior management faced discontent from senior pilots who protested on several issues ranging from ignoring the Indian pilots and hiring foreign counterparts on hefty pay packages to alleged changes in conditions of service of its member Pilots.

The Indian Commercial Pilot Association issued many notices demanding that the Air India management comply with the statutory mandate of the Industrial Disputes (ID) Act, including Section 9A, in letter and in spirit; and not undertake any change in the conditions of service of Pilots without following the applicable provisions of the ID Act.

The pilots’ body also demanded to be involved, as representatives of the Pilots, in deliberations regarding any change in conditions of service before any precipitative steps are taken. It had said that it was important for the morale of the Pilots and for maintenance of trust between the Pilots and the Management of Air India Ltd., especially given the transition to the new management, that Pilots be consulted and taken into confidence before any condition of their service is changed, especially when such change may ultimately prove to be to their detriment.

Thereafter, the peeing incident on November 26 in the Air India New York- Delhi flight and the mishandling of the issues emerging thereafter brought enough embarrassment to Tata so much so that the Air India CEO and Tata sons chairman had to issue statements. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, and Air India on January 8 said that the airline’s response to the incident on its New York-Delhi flight on November 26 should have been “much swifter”. A day earlier, the Air India CEO had said that the airline could have handled the situation better.

The peeing incident brought much controversy and embarrassment coupled with action by the aviation regulator. Aviation regulator DGCA on January 20 imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India and suspended the License of the pilot-in-command for three months in the Air India peeing case which occurred on November 26, 2022. Moreover, the regulator also imposed a penalty of Rs 3 lakh on the Director-in-flight services of Air India for failing to discharge duties.

In another case, the regulator DGCA imposed a Financial Penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Air India for not reporting the incidents which occurred on the AI-142 Paris-New Delhi flight on December 6, 2022. Two incidents had occurred in the flight. While one passenger was caught smoking in the lavatory, was drunk and not adhering to the crew instructions; another allegedly relieved himself on a vacant seat and blanket of a fellow female passenger when she went to the lavatory.
