‘Don’t think Biharis as fools’, Tejashwi targets BJP at mega rally

    [ad_1]

Patna: The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, on Saturday targeted the BJP during a mega rally of the Mahagathbandhan in Purnia.

“We are Biharis and don’t think of us as fools (Ham Log Bihari Hai, Hamko Burbak Mat Samjhiye),” Tejashwi said while taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the promises he had made before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

It was a show of strength for the Mahagathbandhan on Saturday as each and every MLA, MP and minister were present at the rally.

“During a rally at this same venue in 2014, Narendra Modi had promised to give special status to Bihar. But it turned into a ‘jumla’. Don’t assume that we Biharis are fools. We understand everything. The Centre had said that the income of the farmers would double by 2022, but what happened to that promise? What happened to the promise of concrete houses for every countryman? Please tell us one promise made by the Centre which has been fulfilled,” Tejashwi said.

“What was there for Bihar in the Union Budget this year? Zero. It is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is developing Bihar in his own capacity,” the RJD leader said.

“BJP does not have any leader, all of them are dealers. They are only trying to divide the society on religious lines. I’m the son of Lalu Prasad, who never compromised with the communal forces in his entire life. I will not bend before these forces,” Tejashwi said.

‘Poora kuppa kar diye’: Owaisi targets Modi on LIC’s stake in Adani group

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Referring to an article on the value of investments by the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday targetted the BJP-led centre by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put common man’s savings at risk by investing LIC’s money in the Adani group of companies.

“Poora kuppa kar diye” as we say in Hyderabad. LIC is putting common man’s savings at risk; all for the sake of one man’s friendship.
@PMOIndia’s motto seems to be “profit before people,” he tweeted.

According to the cnbctv.com’s article shared by Owaisi, the value of the LIC’s investments in the Adani group of companies has turned negative

As of closing on February 22, LIC’s investment value in Adani Group companies stood at Rs 33,632 crore, as per the December shareholding pattern available on the exchanges.

On January 27, LIC had disclosed that the value of its investments in the Adani Group stood at Rs 56,142 crore.

For the past few weeks, the Adani Group’s stocks have been making headlines, particularly in light of the significant dip in Gautam Adani’s net worth after the release of the Hindenburg report.

Currently, Adani slipped to the 27th position in the world’s billionaire list as his net worth dipped by nearly 62 percent on the year-to-date (YTD) basis to USD 46.1 billion. It was USD 121 billion on January 1, 2023.

Due to the huge dip, Adani’s net worth reached a near two-year low of USD 44.9 which was on February 22, 2021.

    U.S. diplomatic counter-offensive targets China’s ‘false information’

    [ad_1]

    china russia explainer 74942

The new details about Washington’s messaging strategy, including the extent to which the administration is pushing back on Beijing behind the scenes through diplomatic outreach to allies and partners, illuminates the lengths to which Washington feels it needs to go to counter China.

Those efforts also underscore the Biden administration’s resolve to hold Beijing accountable for the incident and to use it as an exemplar of the long international reach of China’s malign activities, even as China tries to woo Europe and other regional blocs.

The Biden administration has reacted strongly “because it’s so clearly a case where the Chinese should just have admitted that they took an action that they should not have taken,” said Zack Cooper, former assistant to the deputy national security adviser for combating terrorism at the National Security Council.

“And rather than just owning up to what was pretty obvious for all to see, [Beijing] launched into a whole propaganda campaign that was pretty frustrating for the administration, especially given that they were heading into what would have been [Secretary of State Antony] Blinken’s first trip to Beijing.”

The National Security Council declined to comment on the record for this story.

China has continued to push back against the U.S. allegations, deflecting questions about its surveillance activities and the extent to which it is planning on supporting Russia in Ukraine. Now, the two countries are engaged in an intense public standoff, and neither side is indicating that it’s ready to back down anytime soon.

It started with the spy balloon. On Feb. 5 — the day after the U.S. shot down the Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina — the Biden administration sent out an “action request” to U.S. diplomatic posts across the globe telling them to push the message that China “is attempting to change the narrative by providing false information.”

The cable included 28 concise talking points for U.S. representatives from Brussels to Grenada and Frankfurt to Busan to share with foreign government officials “in private diplomatic engagements.” The U.S. had several key demands for Beijing, according to the cable, including that the airship “cease operations” and “immediately” leave U.S. airspace.

The State Department pushed its diplomats to move fast. Beijing was mobilizing state media to accuse the U.S. of overreacting in its decision to destroy the balloon in a bid to paint the Chinese government as “the responsible actor in the dispute.” Diplomats were directed to emphasize that the U.S. “is not looking to escalate the situation.”

“We thought it was the responsible thing to do on our part to share as much as we could. Our presentations have been fact-based. This is not an effort to engage in a messaging exercise or to put spin on the ball,” said a State Department official who was granted anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak on the record.

The U.S. was just as persistent with China. Officials from the top tiers of the Biden administration down to the embassy level of the State Department have engaged with their counterparts in China in more than a dozen meetings since the balloon was first detected in late January, according to two of the U.S. officials. The officials, and others, were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic discussions.

There’s been little to show for that outreach, however. Beijing rejected an offer to get on the phone with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Feb. 4, the day the balloon was shot down. It wasn’t until several days later that the Chinese embassy called to lay out the country’s official response, one it had already given publicly: The balloon had merely been dispatched to monitor the weather, one of the U.S. officials said.

Then, when Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Beijing’s top diplomat Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference this weekend, both had sharp words for their counterparts. And Blinken didn’t limit himself to the balloon. He also directly warned the Chinese about taking the step to send weapons to Russia to aid its Ukraine war effort — a prospect the U.S. is increasingly worried about.

“I was able to share with [Wang], as President Biden had shared with President Xi, the serious consequences that would have for our relationship,” Blinken said in an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation.

Beijing has responded with provocations of its own.

“It’s the U.S. side, not the Chinese side, that’s providing an endless flow of weapons,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters Monday. The U.S. side isn’t qualified to point fingers at China or order China around.”

U.S. officials say they’re trying to force Beijing to back down, in part, by detailing the intelligence they have against them.

Over the last several weeks, administration officials have downgraded the classification level on certain intelligence regarding the balloon and China’s plans regarding support for Russia in order to share that information with their Chinese counterparts, two of the officials said.

The officials said that though the U.S. has long been concerned about China and Russia’s alliance, new details about their economic and military partnership have emerged in recent days, putting the administration on edge.

The U.S. has also briefed allies about that intelligence and is requesting diplomats across the world push back against both Beijing’s false narrative about the balloon and its consideration of sending lethal weapons to Russia, two of the officials said.

If messages coming from Europe this week are any indication, the outreach to allies, at least, is creating a united front.

On Monday, the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said it would be a “red line” for the European Union if China sends arms to Russia. Top diplomats from Sweden and Lithuania voiced similar sentiments. And NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg followed suit on Tuesday.

China’s Wang Yi, meanwhile, arrived in Russia Wednesday where he met with President Vladimir Putin and the head of Russia’s National Security Council. Putin declared that Russia-China ties had reached “new frontiers” and announced that Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping is expected to visit Russia later this year.

Men found charred in car: Owaisi targets Cong and BJP, meets bereaved families

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday alleged that “delay” by the Rajasthan government in acting on the missing complaint lodged by the family members of the two men in the Bharatpur case allowed the accused to flee the state.

Owaisi also met the families of Junaid (35) and Nasir (25) whose charred bodies were found in a car in Haryana after the two men from Bharatpur district of Rajasthan were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes. The Hyderabad MP also alleged that such incidents occur because “BJP supports and shelters such organisations due to which police do not take immediate action against them”.

The Rajasthan Police had on Friday arrested one of the five persons linked to the Bajrang Dal named in the FIR lodged at Gopalgarh police station.

“Had the Rajasthan government taken immediate action on the missing complaint related to Junaid and Nasir, then they (abductors) would have not been able to cross the Rajasthan border,” Owaisi who is on a two-day tour of the state told reporters in Alwar district.

He said it was a painful incident.

“If the BJP keeps sheltering such radicals then it is not right for the country. These incidents occur, only and only, because the BJP helps such organisations, gives them strength and shelters them due to which police and administration do not take immediate action,” Owaisi alleged. He said that it is not a matter of Muslims, but of all those people who believe in rule of law and the Constitution.

“Nobody has the right to take the law into their hands otherwise where will be the need for police, administration and courts,” he said.

Later in the day, Owaisi met the grieving family members of Junaid in Ghatmeeka village to express condolences.

“Junaid had six children and his elder brother, who is mentally challenged, had seven children. He had the responsibility of all the children. One murder has orphaned 13 children. It is a matter of regret that police of Haryana and Rajasthan have given free hand to these goons, terrorists and criminals,” he told reporters in Ghatmeeka village.

Haryana and Rajasthan police should arrest such gangs and put them in jail, he said and also targeted the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He also addressed a public meeting in Kaman town as a part of his party’s campaign for Assembly elections. Owaisi said that he is overwhelmed by the support of the people of Bharatpur. He said that his party will fight the assembly elections with full strength and emerge victorious.

Junaid had a criminal record of cattle smuggling and five cases were registered against him at different police stations, a police officer said.

The last rites of the two, who were related to each other, were conducted on Friday after authorities announced financial assistance of Rs 20.5 lakh to each of the affected families.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Friday demanded a CBI probe into the matter and alleged that the Bajrang Dal’s name was being dragged into the case due to “political bias”.

Bajrang Dal is the youth wing of the VHP.

On the victims’ families alleging the Bajrang Dal’s role in the killings, the Rajasthan BJP said it is not justified to malign an organisation before the investigation is completed.

“Whether the accused have links with the Bajrang Dal or are cow vigilantes, it is a matter of investigation. It is not justified to malign any organisation. It will be better if the police take action against those who are guilty,” state BJP spokesperson Ramlal Sharma told reporters on Friday.

  • Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a frontal attack on the Gandhi family members asking why they were ashamed of using the Nehru surname even as he criticised Jawaharlal Nehru as well as Indira Gandhi for repeatedly using Article 356 to topple state governments led by non-Congress parties.

He targeted the Congress on the issue of federalism, saying the Congress dispensations including those led by former prime ministers Nehru and Gandhi used Article 356 of the Constitution at least 90 times to topple state governments of many regional outfits.

Modi alleged that Indira Gandhi alone used Article 356 to topple governments of regional parties in states as many as 50 times.

He questioned parties such as the DMK, TDP and Left and the NCP of Sharad Pawar for aligning with the Congress which had in the past toppled their governments.

Replying to a debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address, Modi said, “I had read in some newspaper, I have not verified it, but a report said as many as 600 government schemes are only in the name of Gandhi-Nehru family.”

He said if Nehru’s name is not mentioned, some people get upset and their blood boils. They ask why Nehru’s name is not mentioned.

“…if Nehru ji’s name is left out by us, we would correct our mistake as he was the first prime minister of the country. But I do not understand why anyone from his clan is afraid of keeping Nehru surname? Is there any shame in having the Nehru surname? What is the shame? When the family is not ready to accept such a great personality, why do you keep questioning us,” he said.

His attack was targeted at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi.

Modi delivered his 90-minute speech amidst the Opposition members shouting for a probe by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) into allegations raised against the Adani Group by the US-based Hindenburg Research firm.

Responding to charges that his government was not cooperating with states, Modi said he was a chief minster before becoming the prime minister and he understood the importance of federalism.

“I have come here after being the chief minister of a state for long. I fully understand the importance of federalism. And that’s why we have emphasized on cooperative, competitive federalism.”

The prime minister asked political parties to compete, cooperate and move forward in the same direction.

“We have taken care of national progress in our policies and have addressed regional aspirations. The perfect combination of national progress and regional aspiration is reflected in our policies and we all move forward to fulfil the dream of a developed India by 2047,” he said.

He, however pointed out that MPs who are sitting in the opposition today had taken away the rights of states.

“I just want to expose them. Take a look at the history and see, which party was it, who were the people in power who misused Article 356 the most and toppled elected governments 90 times. Who are the ones who did it,” he said.

Modi said a prime minister used Article 356 as many as 50 times, hit half a century and the premier’s name was Indira Gandhi.

“Those who are standing with them in Kerala today, just remember, Left government was elected in Kerala which Pandit Nehru did not like. The first elected government was sent home within a short span of time. Today you are standing there, just remember what happened to you,” he said.

He also sought to remind the DMK that the governments of stalwarts like M G Ramachandran and M Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu were also dismissed by the same Congress.

“MGR’s soul must be watching where you are standing. Sitting here is the senior member of this House whom I always consider a respected leader, Mr. Sharad Pawar. Sharad Pawar ji was 35-40 years old in 1980. A young chief minister went out to serve his motherland, his government was also toppled, today he is there,” Modi said.

He further said the Congress harassed every regional leader, including N T Rama Rao and M G Ramachandran.

“Some people here must have changed clothes, names…after being advised by astrologers. but they were also with them at one time. NTR government was sought to be toppled at a time when he had gone to America for health check-up. This was the level of Congress politics,” Modi said.

Modi did not stop his tirade against the grand old party.

Every newspaper used to write that the Raj Bhavans were converted into Congress offices and headquarters of the Congress, he stressed.

In 2005, the NDA had more seats in Jharkhand but the Governor called the UPA to form government. In Haryana in 1982, the BJP and Devi Lal had a pre-poll agreement, but the then governor invited the Congress to form the government.

This is the Congress’s past and today it is trying to mislead the country, Modi added.

Kharge targets Centre, demands JPC probe on Adani

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid interruptions from the ruling party MPs and the chair, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition attacked the Central government over the demand for a probe by the joint parliamentary committee in the Adani case even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seated in the House.

Kharge said, “There should be a joint parliamentary committee probe in the Adani row… when the government is not afraid of anything then constitute a JPC.”

While attacking the PM, Kharge alleged, “Wealth of one of the closest friends of the Prime Minister increased by 12 times in the last two and half years. In 2014 it was Rs 50,000 crore group while in 2019 it became Rs 1 lakh crore group, but what ‘jadu’ (magic) happened that suddenly in two years assets worth Rs 12 lakh crore came…whether it is due to the favor of friendship.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reacted sharply and said, “It is a very smart thing to say… We are giving data and we will corroborate it, but it is completely infused with insinuation against the Prime Minister and that is what we are objecting to. They are overtly insinuating the PM.”

While the chair asked for authentication, he said that there should be a discussion in the national interest. To this Kharge was furious, and said, “I speak the truth, is it anti-national? I am not anti-national and more patriotic than anyone here as I am ‘bhoomi-putra’. You are looting the country and telling me that I am an anti-national.”

Kharge alleged, “The responsible ministers, MPs are always Hindu-Muslim always and don’t get any other subject… Scheduled Castes people are beaten up upon entering temples, if they are considered Hindus why then the Scheduled Caste people not allowed in temples or educated…Many ministers show pictures of them eating at Scheduled Caste houses. Is that any achievement…”

During the motion of thanks on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said that “one person became rich as his wealth increased 12 times from 2019”, which drew objections from the Chair and treasury bench.

However, the chair and the treasury benches objected to it.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “You are insinuating the Prime Minister which can’t be allowed… Any report from any corner of the world cannot be quoted here.”

Kharge had mentioned the Hindenburg report while attacking the government. Even the leader of the House, Piyush Goyal said that LoP casting aspersions on the Prime Minister were unacceptable.

While BJP’s Sushil Modi raised the point of order that any allegations made, a notice should be given in advance which the chair will validate.

The Finance Minister too said, “The LoP is insinuating the Hon’ble Prime Minister.” The Congress members said that they have not taken the name of the Prime Minister. The LoP, however, continued its tirade against the Adani Group.

He said that the group is taking money from the public sector banks and purchasing public sector undertakings. “Privatisation is also diminishing the reservation system which they could have got in the PSUs,” said Kharge.

  • Kumaraswamy claims RSS conspiring to make Pralhad Joshi Karnataka CM, targets lineage

Kumaraswamy claims RSS conspiring to make Pralhad Joshi Karnataka CM, targets lineage

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday claimed that RSS was conspiring to make Union Minister Pralhad Joshi the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with eight deputies, after the Assembly polls, and alleged that the latter lacks culture and divides society.

Hitting back, BJP State president Nalin Kumar Kateel said the JD(S) leader’s statement against the RSS is unbecoming of a former Chief Minister, and his claims about 8 or 9 Deputy Chief Ministers are borne out of a mindset that is rooted in dynastic politics.

“A conspiracy in the RSS is under way to make Pralhad Joshi the Chief Minister of the State after the Assembly polls. Joshi does not belong to a culture that is most prominent in southern Karnataka,” Kumaraswamy said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, “… Certain decisions have been taken by the RSS to make him the Chief Minister, so he has begun to attack us.”

Criticising the dynasty politics and alleged infighting in the first family of that JD (S) for a ticket, Joshi, while addressing special State executive meet of the BJP on Saturday, said ‘Pancharantna Yatra’ has been taken up, ‘Navagraha Yatre’ should have been undertaken instead. As 8-9 members of the party patriarch H D Deve Gowda’s immediate family are in politics. “…all dramabaazi, will they improve the State,” he asked.

Reacting to this, Kumaraswamy today said the public response to Pancharatna schemes of JD (S) has created a fear among the BJP, so they are speaking about his party and family.

The ‘Pancharatna Ratha Yatre’ is aimed at informing people about a five-fold programme called Pancharatna’ that the JD(S) plans to implement if it comes to power, and they include quality education, health, housing, farmer welfare and employment.

“He (Joshi) belongs to the category that divides the country, indulges in conspiracy politics, massacred those who contributed to the country in the name of patriotism,” he said. Therefore, he appealed to the Veerashaivas, Vokkaligas, Backward Classes and Dalit communities not to fall prey to the conspiracy of the BJP and RSS which would divide the State.

Claiming that he has received information on the plan to make Joshi the Chief Minister, Kumaraswamy said there would be eight Deputy Chief Ministers, and discussions have taken place in Delhi and the RSS headquarters in this regard.

“I want to tell Kannadigas of Karnataka, he (Joshi) is not of our culture…,” he added.

Joshi is currently Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines and represents Dharwad Lok Sabha segment.

“Kumaraswamy fears JD(S) won’t win even 20 seats in the Assembly polls, so he is affected. He might have spoken about 8-9 Deputy Chief Ministers after looking at his own family, because their politics is such. He has indulged in both dynasty and divide-and-rule politics,” Kateel said.

Kumaraswamy is a former Chief Minister and should respect all communities, making such comments about a particular community is unbecoming of him, he said.

Before commenting on the RSS, let Kumaraswamy must make himself aware of the organisation and its ideology, he said.

  • DeSantis targets ‘ideological’ programs in proposed university changes

DeSantis targets ‘ideological’ programs in proposed university changes

    [ad_1]

    desantis law enforcement 79824

DeSantis earlier this month laid the groundwork for this proposal by launching an initial probe for data on how much state funding flows to diversity, equity and inclusion programs — as well as critical race theory — at state colleges and universities, giving the first indication that these services could be on the chopping block this year. Diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, encompasses a breadth of policies and programs promoting the representation and participation of different groups in schools, which can include ages, ethnicities, genders, religions, cultures and sexual orientations.

After universities responded to his request and spelled out at least $34.5 million in spending toward diversity and similar programs, DeSantis pledged to “eliminate all DEI and CRT bureaucracies” statewide. That appears to put at risk positions at colleges such as the University of Florida’s chief diversity office, which develops and coordinates “inclusive excellence” strategy and initiatives across UF and supports compliance with federal Affirmative Action regulations.

“No funding, and that will wither on the vine,” DeSantis said Tuesday.

Officials alongside DeSantis claimed Tuesday that DEI programs are a “lie” that are harming students by limiting discourse and restricting debate among students. They criticized universities in other states such as California and Illinois that require applicants to sign diversity and equity statements as a commitment to those principles.

“We are rejecting mistakes that other states are making,” said State University System of Florida Chancellor Ray Rodrigues.

DeSantis has sought to reshape Florida’s colleges and universities into more conservative-leaning institutions. He recently appointed six new trustees to the board of the Sarasota-based New College, a small liberal arts college, and last year, his chief of staff helped former Nebraska GOP Sen. Ben Sasse navigate the University of Florida application process to become the flagship university’s new president.

DeSantis also wants Florida lawmakers to give university presidents and trustee boards power to call for a review of a tenured faculty member at any time. The Legislature in 2022 passed a law clearing a path for the state university system’s Board of Governors to adopt rules requiring tenured faculty to take part in a “comprehensive” review every five years. Now, DeSantis wants to expand that policy.

Additionally, DeSantis is pushing to give university presidents more authority in faculty hiring decisions. The Republican governor also suggested spending $100 million in state cash to recruit “highly qualified” faculty at universities.

DeSantis also said that the state is preparing to send more funding toward New College of Florida, which is could soon be getting a curriculum and faculty overhaul. He said that Florida lawmakers are set to consider a $15 million budget allocation for new faculty and scholarships at the school in the coming weeks. He also wants a recurring $10 million to bring in faculty at New College.

“You’re not spending the money on DEI bureaucracies, you’re spending the money on bringing really good people in that are going to be able to teach our university students,” DeSantis said. “I think that makes much more sense from a financial perspective and it’s much more mission-oriented in terms of what we’re trying to do.”

The union representing higher education faculty in Florida said it will fully oppose the governor’s proposals.

“The United Faculty of Florida stand in lock-step opposition to any and all so-called ‘reforms’ that will actually destroy our state’s world-class degree programs and their ability to serve our students,” said UFF President Andrew Gothard in a statement. “We will not allow Florida’s future to be sacrificed for cheap political points.”

Ankara: Turkey has raised its security measures to highest level against possible Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaida retaliation on Western targets in the country, the Turkish Interior Ministry said.

“Evaluations were made against all possible provocations, and our security measures were maximised after the sinister actions against our holy book the Quran, in Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark,” the Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

In this context, the information that terrorist organisations, such as the IS and al-Qaida, are seeking action in many countries has also been evaluated, it added.

Turkey made some arrests through an allied country’s intelligence but couldn’t find any weapon or sign of action, noted the Ministry, without naming the country, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Monday, the Embassy of the US in Turkey warned its citizens of possible attacks against churches, synagogues, and diplomatic missions in Istanbul province, following protests involving burning Quran broke out in several European countries.

It was the second warning issued by the embassy in the past four days.
