Florida proposal targets transgender bathroom use

Legislators advanced the bathroom bills through introductory hearings along party lines Thursday in the Senate, by a 15-3 vote, and Tuesday in the House, by a 11-3 vote. The proposals come as Republicans in Florida push culture war bills this year focused on how gender identity and sexual identity intersect with parental rights and education.

State lawmakers have either passed or are considering similar “bathroom bills” in Iowa, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma and Tennessee. In 2016, North Carolina enacted a similar bill but faced widespread blowback from businesses, the NBA and NCAA and eventually repealed the law.

The administration of Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin in 2022 also enacted a similar policy for the state’s schools that require transgender students to use the bathrooms that correspond to the sex they were assigned to at birth.

Under the Florida legislation, any person 18 years or older could be charged with a second degree felony if they enter a restroom or changing facility designated for the opposite sex and refuse to “immediately depart” when asked by someone else. It also requires local school districts to craft code of conduct rules to discipline students who do the same.

These policies would be enforced at educational institutions, hurricane shelters, substance abuse providers, health care facilities and public accommodations, which by law include lodgings, restaurants, gasoline stations entertainment spaces and more.

There are carve outs in the bill outlining certain instances where someone could be legally allowed to enter a restroom designated for the opposite sex, such as to accompany another person to chaperone a child, elderly or disabled person, for law enforcement purposes or for emergencies.

But those protections are not enough to quell concerns from LGBTQ advocates and Democrats who argue the legislation amounts to harassment for people simply trying to use the restroom. They contend that the proposals would force transgender people to make the “impossible decision” of breaking the law or revealing their private medical information.

“Are we not creating a bathroom patrol where people can stand … and call law enforcement, creating very dangerous situations for trans individuals?” said Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book (D-Plantation). “I am very concerned about what this does, or the implications or … the consequences of something like this.”

The legislation goes further to require that entities seeking operating licenses in Florida must prove their compliance with standards for restrooms and changing facilities, ensuring they have designated spaces for exclusive use by females or males, or unisex facilities.

Businesses that fail to comply with these rules could face fines up to $10,000 levied by the state attorney general. The misdemeanor tied to using a bathroom of the opposite sex misdemeanor could result in up to 60 days in jail or up to a $500 fine.

Lawmakers, who are advancing the bills, acknowledge that they expect to tweak and update the proposals in future committee hearings.

“There are just places where we should be comfortable to do the business that needs to be done in those spaces,” said Sen. Erin Grall (R-Fort Pierce), who is sponsoring the Senate legislation. “And we need to figure out how to get that right.”

The Senate’s bathroom bill, FL SB1674 (23R), is slated for one additional hearing in the Fiscal Policy committee before it would be eligible for a vote from the full chamber. The House bill, FL HB1521 (23R), is assigned to two additional committee stops.

  • PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: In the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not facing a similar action for constantly criticising Sonia Gandhi and late PM Rajiv Gandhi.

He said Rahul Gandhi was being punished for becoming the voice of the people, and added that his disqualification was against democratic values.

Members of the Nagpur District Congress Committee and party workers led by Patole, former Union minister Vilas Muttemwar and other leaders staged a day-long ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ protest at the Sanvidhan square to show their solidarity with Rahul Gandhi.

“Democracy in the country is facing a big threat because of the Modi-led government’s autocratic rule. Rahul Gandhi had been constantly raising the issue of fugitive economic offenders Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, who ran away with the country’s money. This is what the Opposition does and it is the duty of the government to reply,” Patole said in a press conference during the protest.

“The country’s prime minister constantly attacked the Gandhi family and their (BJP) ministers insulted former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. They call Rahul Gandhi anti-national, forgetting that he is the grandson of a freedom fighter and son of a martyr. They are targeting members of a family who have sacrificed their lives and this fight is against this mindset of calling a nationalist an anti-national,” he alleged.

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail for calling Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi thieves, he claimed.

“I want to question why there is no action against PM Modi, who constantly attacks Sonia Gandhi and called Rajiv Gandhi ‘chor’ (thief)? Why is he not getting this kind of punishment?” he asked.

Rahul Gandhi was becoming the voice of people, and disqualifying him from the Lok Sabha was against the values of democracy and injustice to him, Patole said.

The Congress leader announced that a huge rally will be taken out on March 29 against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at various places across India.

Gandhi, representing Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, was on Friday disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after his conviction in a defamation case by a court in Surat in Gujarat.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in the defamation case over his “Modi surname” remarks at a 2019 poll rally in Karnataka. However, the court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

“Republicans are in the majority and on offense. We will grow our House majority by building strong campaigns around talented recruits in these districts who can communicate the dangers of Democrats’ extreme agenda,” NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) said in a statement. “These House Democrats should be shaking in their boots.”

The list features 19 Democrats who won despite the NRCC spending heavily against them last cycle, including Reps. Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Gabriel Vasquez of New Mexico and Pat Ryan of New York, according to FEC reports. Each of them won by just a few thousand votes. Several races the NRCC is targeting this time around were among the most expensive in terms of outside spending in 2022.

All of those races featured more than $20 million of spending from outside groups, according to OpenSecrets.

The NRCC is targeting all but one of the members on the DCCC’s list and has added Reps. Josh Harder of California, Darren Soto of Florida and Jeff Jackson of North Carolina, each of whom won by more than 12 points. Reps. Dina Titus of Nevada, Val Hoyle of Oregon, Seth Magaziner of Rhode Island and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, who each won by single digits, are also on the list.

Punjab BJP targets AAP govt over law and order situation

    [ad_1]

Ludhiana: The BJP on Sunday targeted the AAP government over the law and order situation, saying it has “failed” to take action against self-styled Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and his supporters in the recent Ajnala incident.

“Till today, no action has been taken by the Punjab government against the violators,” said BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon here while referring to the Ajnala incident.

Last month, radical preacher Amritpal and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of the Amritsar city, clashed with police for the release of one of Amritpal’s aide.

During the incident, six policemen, including a Superintendent of Police rank officer, suffered injuries.

BJP leader Dhillon further said, “The law and order is a state subject and responsibility of its maintenance cannot be shifted upon anyone else.”

He claimed that as a result of “deteriorating” law and order, industrialists of the state are feeling insecure and are contemplating to shift their businesses to other parts of the country.

Punjab BJP general secretary Jeewan Gupta accused the Bhagwant Mann government of not taking any step to boost industry in the state.

Amit Shah sounds LS poll bugle in Kerala, targets CM on corruption

    [ad_1]

Thrissur: Taking on Kerala’s CPI(M)-led Left government on alleged corruption in the Life Mission project, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to shed his silence on the matter.

Shah, while addressing a BJP rally here, also alleged that Communists were keeping mum on the alleged gold smuggling scam and said they will be forced to answer the public in 2024 Parliamentary elections.

“The communists are immersed in the Life Mission corruption. The Chief Minister’s former Principal Secretary, M Sivasankar, was arrested in this case. I urge the chief minister to answer the people on that matter,” Shah said.

Referring to the government action against the Popular Front of Indi (PFI), the Union Home Minister said the outfit has been completely banned in the country and thus helped Kerala to get rid of violence.

“This step was not welcomed by either the Congress or by the Communists,” he said.

In a rally, marking the launch of BJP’s election campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Shah said the people of Kerala, for a long time, have given opportunity to the Congress and Communists to rule the state.

“Communists have been rejected by the world and the country has rejected the Congress party…Kerala is passionate about bringing change under the leadership of Narendra Modi,” Shah said.

It’s insulting to call ‘adivasis’ as ‘vanvasis’: Sharad Pawar targets BJP

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that it was insulting to call tribals or ‘adivasis’ as “vanvasis”, and those who use that term show their ignorance.

He was speaking at a function here.

“Some people prefer to call tribals ‘vanvasis’ as in those who live in forests. It will not be an exaggeration if I say that it is an insult to call tribals as ‘vanvasis’. They are ‘adivasi’,” the former Union minister said without naming anyone.

“They are the true owners of ‘jal’, jungle and ‘zameen’ (water, jungle and soil). The people who use such terms (vanvasi) show their ignorance towards adivasis as well as their efforts in preserving the jungles in this country. The credit (of preserving forests) is theirs (tribals’),” he said.

Yashwantrao Chavan Pratisthan, an organisation headed by Pawar on Sunday started its Tribal Welfare Centre.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been targeting the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that they have been using a “derogatory” term ‘vanvasi’ (forest dweller) to refer to adivasis. During a rally in Madhya Pradesh in November last year, Gandhi had said the BJP should apologise with folded hands for disrespecting tribals by calling them ‘vanvasi’.

“A few days back, I heard a speech of PM Narendra Modi in which he used a new word, ‘vanvasi’, for ‘adivasis’. It means adivasis are not the first owners of the country and that they only live in forests,” the former Congress president had said.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) backs an organisation named Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram that works for the welfare of tribals.

AAP launches month-long membership drive in Haryana; targets 10 lakh new members

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday launched a mega membership drive in Haryana, under which it plans to enroll 10 lakh members over the next one month.

Senior AAP leader and party’s Haryana affairs in-charge Sushil Gupta said party workers will cover every nook and corner of the state during the month-long membership drive.

“Our aim is to enroll 10 lakh new members within a month,” Gupta told reporters here.

AAP leaders Anurag Dhanda, who was present at the launch, said while party volunteers will be going to every town and village, people can also become a member by giving a missed call on a mobile number, which has been launched for the purpose.

“Every worker of the party will go to every village and every ward. In the next one month, the policies of Aam Aadmi Party will be disseminated to every person of the state. All 90 assembly constituencies will be covered by party workers.

“People can also give a missed call on mobile number 76500-88000 and can become active member,” he said.

The party is aiming to build a strong organisational structure in Haryana, where it will be fighting next year’s assembly polls, Dhanda said.

Sushil Gupta said that AAP is the only viable alternative in the political scene of Haryana, where people want good education, better health facilities, a corruption-free governance, and good job opportunities.

He hit out at the BJP-JJP government in the state, saying crime, drug addiction, and unemployment has increased in the state under its rule.

Party leaders Ashok Tanwar and Nirmal Singh were also present at the launch.

  • TMC’s Moitra targets BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for ‘fake MBA’

TMC’s Moitra targets BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for ‘fake MBA’

    [ad_1]

TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Friday asked Lok Sabha MP Om Birla if lying on the election affidavit and faking an MBA degree along with getting a ‘dodgy Phd’ are grounds for termination of Lok Sabha membership.

She was targetting BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for seeking the termination of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s membership from Lok Sabha while deposing before a parliamentary panel for the former’s remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the discussion on the Adani-Hindenburg row.

“Oh just btw isn’t lying on affidavit & faking an MBA degree from DU’s FMS & then getting a dodgy PhD also grounds for termination of Lok Sabha membership? Privilege committee, are you listening @ombirlakota?” she tweeted.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in 2020 in the Jharkhand High Court alleging that BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had submitted a fake degree to the Election Commission of India in his election nomination papers.

The PIL, filed by one Danyaal Danish, sought directions for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a high-level enquiry by the ECI.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Friday sought termination of Rahul Gandhi’s membership from Lok Sabha while deposing before a parliamentary panel over his privilege notice against the Congress leader.

Following Gandhi’s speech in the first part of the Budget Session, in which he commented on the Hindenburg-Adani issue, Dubey moved the privilege notice against him on February 7.

Presenting his case before Lok Sabha’s privilege committee chaired by BJP MP Sunil Singh, Dubey said despite Gandhi’s remarks expunged by Lok Sabha Speaker, they are still available on his and Congress official YouTube channels.

“Not only one but three types of privilege apply to him, and he is habitual offender and therefore his membership should be terminated,” a source quoting Dubey said.

Dubey also presented documents and reports to substantiate his point that all allegations made by Gandhi are baseless.

He cited expulsion of Subramanian Swamy 1976 from Rajya Sabha to buttress his demand for Gandhi’s termination.

Dubey also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is Lok Sabha member and leader of House and without notice one cannot make allegations against him.

  • Vice President targets Rahul for attempt to tarnish India on foreign soil

Vice President targets Rahul for attempt to tarnish India on foreign soil

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Without taking name, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for making ‘anti-India’ remarks on foreign soil, terming them as ironic and painful.

Speaking at the launch of the book ‘Mundaka Upanishad: The Bridge to Immortality’ penned by veteran politician Karan Singh, Dhankhar said, “How ironic, how painful! While the world is applauding our historic accomplishments as a functional vibrant democracy, some among us, including parliamentarians, are engaged in the thoughtless, unfair denigration of our well-nurtured democratic values. How can we justify such wanton orchestration of a factually untenable narrative?”

He said that at a time when India is having its moment of glory as G20 President, there are people outside the country working in overdrive to denigrate the nation.

“Such misplaced campaign mode to taint and tarnish our Parliament and constitutional entities is too serious and exceptional to be ignored or countenanced. No political strategy or partisan stance can justify compromising our nationalism and democratic values,” the Vice President said.

Dhankhar said he would be on the wrong side of the Constitution if he maintains silence on this misadventure-orchestration by a Member of Parliament outside the country, which is ill-premised, unwholesome and motivated.

“How can I sanctify a statement that mics are put off in the Indian Parliament? How can people say so? Has there been any illustration? Yes! We did have a dark chapter of our political history. Proclamation of Emergency was the darkest period any democracy can suffer. But Indian democratic polity is now mature. There can be no repeat of that.

“Anyone who says so, inside or outside the country, that in mics are put off in the Parliament… Imagine this being done after having held the floor for nearly 50 minutes. Such kind of wanton and misadventure to run down our democratic values cannot be countenanced. I call upon everyone – intelligentsia, media and youth who are our warriors of 2047 – to rise to the occasion, expose these forces and neutralise them,” he said.

Dhankhar also said that people should not allow such a narrative to gain momentum by those elements who wish to pose hurdles to our rising growth.

“I preside over the Rajya Sabha, let someone come forward and say mics were put off,” he said.

Dhankar reiterated that there is fullest freedom of expression in India as per the Constitution and no democracy in the world can rival that.

“You run down our judiciary on foreign soil. Where on the planet is a judiciary that acts with such lightning speed? Our judiciary is made with the most brilliant minds in the world,” he added.

Addressing MBA students at the Cambridge Judge Business School on the topic of ‘Learning to Listen in the 21st Century’, Rahul Gandhi had recently said that opposition parties are under ‘constant pressure’ as numerous cases have been slapped on them by the BJP government.

“Indian democracy is under attack. The institutional framework which is required for a democracy — Parliament, free press, the judiciary, just the idea of mobilisation — these are all getting constrained. We are facing an attack on the basic structure of democracy,” Rahul Gandhi had said.
