Leaked abortion draft made us ‘targets of assassination’, Samuel Alito says

    [ad_1]

Samuel Alito said the decision he wrote removing the federal right to abortion made him and other US supreme court justices “targets of assassination” but denied claims he was responsible for its leak in draft form.

“Those of us who were thought to be in the majority, thought to have approved my draft opinion, were really targets of assassination,” Alito told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published on Friday.

“It was rational for people to believe they might be able to stop the decision in Dobbs by killing one of us.”

Alito wrote the ruling in Dobbs v Jackson, the Mississippi case that overturned Roe v Wade, which established the right to abortion in 1973.

Alito’s draft ruling was leaked to Politico on 2 May last year, to uproar and protest nationwide. The final ruling was issued on 24 June.

On 8 June, an armed man was arrested outside the home of Brett Kavanaugh, with Alito one of six conservatives on the nine-justice court. Charged with attempted murder of a United States judge, the man pleaded not guilty.

The conservative chief justice, John Roberts, voted against overturning Roe, but the three rightwingers installed by Republicans under Donald Trump ensured it fell regardless.

Progressives charged that a conservative, perhaps the hardline Alito, might have orchestrated the leak in an attempt to lock in a majority for such a momentous decision.

Alito said: “That’s infuriating to me. Look, this made us targets of assassination. Would I do that to myself? Would the five of us have done that to ourselves? It’s quite implausible.”

The leak was investigated by the supreme court marshal, without establishing a perpetrator.

Saying the marshal “did a good job with the resources that were available”, Alito said he had “a pretty good idea who is responsible, but that’s different from the level of proof that is needed to name somebody”.

Alito said the leak “was a part of an effort to prevent the Dobbs draft … from becoming the decision of the court. And that’s how it was used for those six weeks by people on the outside, as part of the campaign to try to intimidate the court.”

He also said the leak “created an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust”. The justices “worked through it”, he said, “and last year we got our work done … but it was damaging”.

Last November, after a bombshell New York Times report, Alito denied leaking information about a decision in a 2014 case about contraception and religious rights.

His Wall Street Journal interview seemed bound to further anger Democrats and progressives. Justices regularly claim not to be politically motivated, but even with a Democrat in the White House the court has made other momentous conservative rulings, notably including a loosening of gun-control laws.

Joe Biden’s administration has shied from calls for reform, including the idea justices should be added to establish balance or give liberals a majority, reflecting Democratic control of the White House and Senate.

Alito told the Journal he did not “feel physically unsafe, because we now have a lot of protection”. He also said he was “driven around in basically a tank, and I’m not really supposed to go anyplace by myself without the tank and my members of the police force”.

Complaining that criticism also stoked by corruption allegations against two more conservatives, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, were “new during my lifetime”, Alito said: “We are being hammered daily, and I think quite unfairly in a lot of instances.

“And nobody, practically nobody, is defending us. The idea has always been that judges are not supposed to respond to criticisms, but if the courts are being unfairly attacked, the organised bar will come to their defense.”

Alito said legal authorities had, “if anything … participated to some degree in these attacks”.

He declined to comment on reporting by ProPublica about Thomas’s friendship with Harlan Crow, a Republican mega-donor who has bestowed gifts and purchases which Thomas largely did not disclose.

But Alito did complain about how Kavanaugh was treated when allegations of sexual assault surfaced during his confirmation process.

“After Justice Kavanaugh was accused of being a rapist … he made an impassioned speech, made an impassioned scene, and he was criticised because it was supposedly not judicious, not the proper behavior for a judge to speak in those terms.

“I don’t know – if somebody calls you a rapist?”

Accusations against Kavanaugh included attempted rape while a high school student. On Friday, the Guardian reported that new information showed serious omissions in a Senate investigation of the allegations, mounted when Republicans controlled the chamber.

Polling shows that public trust in the supreme court has reached historic lows.

“We’re being bombarded,” Alito complained, “and then those who are attacking us say: ‘Look how unpopular they are. Look how low their approval rating has sunk.’

“Well, yeah, what do you expect when … day in and day out, ‘They’re illegitimate. They’re engaging in all sorts of unethical conduct. They’re doing this, they’re doing that’?”

Such attacks, he said, “undermine confidence in the government [as] it’s one thing to say the court is wrong; it’s another thing to say it’s an illegitimate institution”.

With some court-watchers, the interview landed heavily.

Robert Maguire, research director for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, an independent watchdog, said: “There is no depth to the pity [justices] – and Alito in particular – feel for themselves when they face public criticism.”

Cong targets Kejriwal after row over Rs 45 cr spend on ‘beautification’ of Delhi CM residence

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As reports of spending of Rs 45 crore on “beautification” of Delhi chief minister’s official residence here surfaced, Congress leader Ajay Maken on Tuesday raised questions on Kejriwal’s right to remain in his position as a public servant.

Maken said Kejriwal allegedly spent Rs 45 crore of public funds on his luxurious bungalow, including extravagant items like Dior polish, Vietnam marble, expensive curtains, and high-end carpets.

However, before his election, the AAP leader distributed printed copies of a sworn affidavit in his New Delhi Legislative Assembly constituency, dated June 7, 2013, in which he made seven promises.

    MS Education Academy

Listing out the first promise made by Kejriwal, Maken said he claimed not to use a car with a red light, or request additional security beyond what is necessary for a common citizen and refuse a large bungalow and instead live in an ordinary house like a common man.

“Despite naming his party ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ (common man’s party) and making these pledges, Mr Kejriwal spent a fortune on his bungalow when the people of Delhi were desperately seeking oxygen cylinders during the COVID pandemic.

“Moreover, there are more than 6 lakh households living in slums in the city. This raises questions about his right to remain in his position as a public servant and whether he has upheld the other promises mentioned in the distributed sworn affidavit, especially considering the urgent needs of the citizens,” the Congress leader tweeted.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier claimed that about Rs 45 crore was spent on the “beautification” of the Delhi chief minister’s official residence in the city’s Civil Lines area and demanded his resignation on “moral” grounds.

While no official reaction was available from the Delhi government, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hit back at the BJP.

Senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha said while speaking to Times Now that Kejriwal’s residence was constructed 75-80 years ago in 1942. The Delhi government’s Public Works department (PWD), after an audit, had recommended its renovation, he said.

BJP targets Odisha govt over Sambalpur violence

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday targeted the Odisha government over the recent clashes between two communities in Sambalpur.

Holding a press conference in Jharsuguda, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal alleged that the Odisha government ignored the intelligence reports due to which large-scale violence took place in the town.

“Last year also, some tension erupted during the Hanuman Jayanti celebration in Sambalpur. But it was controlled. However, this year, due to the state government’s lack of foresight and ignorance, such incidents happened,” he alleged.

    MS Education Academy

“The state government was having the intelligence report and last year’s experience. So, this year, the state should have made proper security arrangements during the procession. However, only a handful of security personnel were deployed during the April 12 procession,” Samal said.

If the state does not have an adequate police force, security forces could be called from the Centre, the BJP leader said.

“Had the government shown the same promptness it showed on April 14, the April 12 incident would not have happened,” he pointed out.

“The Sambalpur SP said that everything was pre-planned. Who had planned it? Who is the godfather behind the stone pelting and violence?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the BJD said “it is extremely unfortunate that when peace is returning to Sambalpur, the Odisha BJP wants to instigate for political gains. This has always been their strategy. The police have taken tough action against those involved in the violence”.

In protest of the violence, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Wednesday observed a 12-hour bandh in 14 districts of Odisha.

BJP targets Congress over its quota stand in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Monday accused the Congress and the JD(S) of joining hands by promising to reverse the Karnataka government order to scrap the four percent quota for Muslims to deny benefits given to Vokkaligas, Lingayats as well as SCs and STs.

Describing the Janata Dal (Secular) as the B-team of the Congress, he said on Twitter that the BJP will stand strongly with these communities and will make sure it is with them for their progress.

He used the hashtag “anti-Hindu Congress” to target the opposition party.

    MS Education Academy

While Karnataka Congress leaders want to reverse reservation, Rahul Gandhi “dropped” into Karnataka and said he wants to breach the Supreme Court limit on reservations, the BJP MP from the state tweeted.

“So the Congress politics of lies and promise and scoot politics continues. That is why voters chose BJP bcoz we deliver what we promise,” he said.

BJP I-T department head Amit Malviya alleged that Gandhi is being “disingenuous” with his claim on the issue of social justice when the erstwhile Siddaramaiah-led Congress government did nothing to address long-pending demands of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

“On the contrary, the BJP, in a series of steps since Oct 2022 did everything to empower them. The BJP government ensured reservation for SCs (17%, up from 15% earlier) and STs (7%, up from 3% earlier) was hiked in proportion to their population,” he said.

In March 2023, he added, the BJP ensured sub-categorisation of the SC quota, a long-pending demand “Siddaramaiah slept over when in office”.

“In addition, BJP removed the blatantly unconstitutional and communal religion based quota of 4% for Muslims and redistributed it between the agricultural communities represented by the Lingayats (their share went up from 5 to 7% under 2D)and Vokkaligas (from 4 to 6% under 2C),” Malviya said.

Gandhi has pitched for reservation in line with population as he demanded the release of the caste census which, he said, was done during the UPA government. He has also called for lifting the reservation cap.

Pilot targets Gehlot again, renews demand for probe into ‘BJP corruption’

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Making clear that he is not backing down from the stand he has taken against his own government in Rajasthan, Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday renewed his demand for a probe into alleged corruption during the term of the previous BJP government.

The former chief minister recently went on a daylong fast over this, defying the party’s central leadership even after it termed his proposed move “anti-party activity”.

Pilot target had appeared to be Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot — he criticised the Gehlot government for “inaction” in “corruption cases” at a time when the party is gearing up for the year-end assembly polls.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a gathering in Jhunjhunu on Monday, the dissident leader stuck to his position.

“I am asking for action even today. It’s been a week now but no action has been taken,” he said, repeating his demand for “an inquiry against those involved in corruption.”

“Action should be taken if the evidence is found. It is the responsibility of all of us to give Rajasthan clean politics,” he said.

He said he will not compromise on the issue of corruption.

Due to his scheduled public events in Jhunjhunu and Jaipur, Pilot also skipped a meeting with All India Congress Committee in-charge for Rajasthan Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra.

The three are holding separate meetings with all Rajasthan Congress MLAs in the run-up to the polls. Monday was the turn of the MLAs from the Ajmer division, under which Pilot’s Tonk constituency falls.

In Jhunjhunu’s Khetri town, Pilot told reporters that an investigation should be carried out as soon as possible because the entire Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, has been fighting “corruption” by the BJP government at the Centre.

“In Rajasthan, elections are seven months away. You want an effective and transparent inquiry into all those scandals that broke out when the BJP was in power, and I think we should do it as soon as possible,” Pilot said.

“Be it Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh or UP, we have always exposed the BJP’s corruption,” he said.

Replying to a question over the inflation relief programme announced by Gehlot, he said, Pilot said he welcomed such relief schemes.

“But in politics credibility and what you say is also important. When we go to the polls seven months later, we will be told you made the allegations — either you were lying or you didn’t have enough courage (to follow through),” he said.

An MLA told reporters that he mentioned Pilot when he met party leaders during their interactions with legislators.

“I told them about the influence of Sachin Pilot in Ajmer. He has been an MP from Ajmer and there is a big number of his supporters there,” Masuda MLA Rakesh Pareek said

Pilot’s fast last week put the party’s central leadership in a quandry on whether to take action against him or not.

“If there is any issue with his own government, it can be discussed at party forums instead of the media and in public,” Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had said in a statement the night before Pilot’s dharna.

“This is clearly anti-party activity,” he had then said.

Jungle raj, mafia raj: Oppn targets BJP over Atiq Ahmad’s killing

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: “Jungle raj” and “mafia raj” were some of the words used to describe Uttar Pradesh and even India by opposition leaders on Sunday as they hit out at the BJP government over the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother in front of policemen and media in Prayagraj district.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said stringent action should be taken against those involved in the incident.

“Jungle Raj under BJP Yogi govt in UP. Its USP: Encounter killings, Bulldozer politics & patronising criminals. Enforce rule of law; apprehend perpetrators & punish them stringently,” he said in a tweet

    MS Education Academy

TMC MP Mouha Moitra said the country has been turned into “mafia raj”.

“BJP has turned India into a mafia republic. I will say it here, I will say it abroad, I will say it everywhere because it is the truth. 2 men in custody shot dead in front of a zillion policemen & cameras – this is the death of the rule of law,” she said.

Moitra also said that she can even believe that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got the shooting done simply to “deflect attention” from repercussions to the Satyapal Malik interview.

“Nothing, just nothing, is beyond this government,” she said.

The two brothers were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

Cong targets Ram Madhav, RSS leader says he will file defamation suit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday asked why the CBI or ED is not knocking at the doors of RSS leader Ram Madhav after former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik alleged that he was involved in corruption, a charge strongly rejected by the former BJP general secretary.

Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in October 2021, Malik had claimed that a senior RSS functionary had offered him a bribe of Rs 300 crore to clear two files related to “Ambani” when he was the J-K governor. He claimed that in an interview to a YouTube channel on Monday, Malik named the RSS functionary as Madhav.

Asked about it, Madhav told PTI that these are “totally false allegations”.

    MS Education Academy

“The CBI has already thoroughly investigated the matter. I will be filing defamation charges against the peddlers of these false allegations very soon,” the RSS leader said.

Malik was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir between August 2018 and October 2019, and in October 2021 he was the governor of Meghalaya.

“Why is the CBI or ED not knocking at Ram Madhav’s doors, given that a former governor has exposed him,” Khera asked.

The Congress leader said the CBI had openly questioned the former governor at its headquarters but why has Ram Madhav has not been called for questioning yet.

“The ED-CBI raids or interrogates opposition leaders time and again, but why not BJP leaders? Why these double standards?

Khera also played out the purported interview of Malik.

“If Malik is speaking the truth then why the CBI, ED or other agencies have not taken action against Madhav, else there should be action against Malik if his claims are untrue,” he said.

Khera also claimed that Malik has sought Z-plus security as a former governor but he has only been provided a PSO and is living in his own house, whereas former Congres leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has been given a government bungalow and Z-plus security.

Pilot sits on dharna, targets own govt in Rajasthan

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday sat here on a fast, piling pressure on his own party by targeting the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan for inaction’ in alleged cases of corruption when the BJP ran the state.

The former deputy chief minister began the dharna at the Martyr’s Memorial here, ignoring warnings by the Congress central leadership that the move just months ahead of the assembly polls is “anti-party activity”.

CM Gehlot and Pilot have been at loggerheads since the Congress formed the government in the state in December 2018.

    MS Education Academy

Pilot offered flowers at the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and social reformer Jyotirao Phule before starting his silent protest around 11 am. “This struggle against corruption will continue,” Pilot told reporters while leaving the venue at 4 pm as scheduled.

He sat alone on the dais for five hours, against the backdrop of a large banner that described the event as a fast against “corruption” during the term of BJP’s Vasundhara Raje — “Vasundhara Sarkar Me Hue Bhrashtachar ke Viruddh Anshan”. The song “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye” played in the background.

His supporters sat behind or below the platform.

No ruling party minister or MLA showed up as they were asked by Pilot to keep away. But several other leaders, including former MLAs Santosh Saharan and Ramnarayan Gurjar were present.

The Pilot faction apparently did not want to make it a headcount of MLAs with him versus those with Gehlot in the divided Rajasthan Congress. Also, this would have put the pro-Pilot MLAs at a greater risk of action by the party leadership.

Gehlot did not made any direct remark on Pilot’s move after the younger leader announced the agitation on Sunday.

But On Tuesday morning, as his former deputy began the dharna, the CM released a video expounding his own vision for the state. “I have decided that I have to make Rajasthan the top state by 2030,” he said.

“To realise this dream, in the last four budgets and this year’s ‘Bachat, Rahat and Badhat’ budget, I have made schemes no other state has,” he added in the clip, which could be interpreted as an indication that the veteran politician sees himself as his party’s CM candidate in the next election as well.

Pilot’s fast was an apparent attempt to stall this in the run-up to the polls. But the Congress leadership appeared to have thrown its weight behind Gehlot, at least for now.

“If there is any issue with his own government, it can be discussed at party forums instead of the media and in public,” Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Rajasthan in-charge at the All India Congress Committee (AICC), had said in a statement Monday night.

“This is clearly anti-party activity. I am in touch with him and I still appeal for dialogue since he is an indisputable asset to the Congress,” he added.

Rajasthan Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh’s son Anirudh Singh, who recently targeted Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in UK, was present at the dharna site. Several workers from Pilot’s constituency Tonk and areas in eastern Rajasthan also came.

As the fast ended, Pilot said the Congress had assured people that its government will take effective action over corruption during the term of the previous BJP government.

“I wanted the Congress government to take action against the corruption of the former government,” he told reporters. “This struggle against corruption will continue.”

The Gehlot-Pilot tussle began during the formation of the Congress government in December 2018. Both were keen on the chief minister’s post.

But the party high command picked Gehlot for the top post in the state for a third time and Pilot was made his deputy.

In July 2020, Pilot and a section of Congress MLAs rebelled openly against Gehlot, demanding a change of leadership in the state. Pilot was stripped then of the posts of deputy chief minister and Pradesh Congress Committee president.

The month-long crisis ended after the party’s central leadership’s assurance to look into the issues Pilot raised.

Gehlot later used terms like “gaddar” (traitor), “nakara” (failure) and “nikamma” (worthless) for Pilot, and accused him of being involved with BJP leaders in a conspiracy to topple the Congress government.

Last September, MLAs in the Gehlot camp boycotted a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting and held a parallel meeting to stall what they felt was an attempt to make Pilot the new chief minister.

Gehlot was then being considered for the party president’s post.

Democracy not in danger, dynasty politics is: Shah targets Rahul in UP

    [ad_1]

Kaushambi: Attacking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent remarks in the UK, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that it’s not democracy that is in danger, but “your family” and the idea of dynasty politics that is under threat.

At two public meetings in Uttar Pradesh during the day, he also slammed the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party. In Azamgarh, which has a sizeable Muslim population, he said under the previous state governments, 24-hour power supply was available “only during Ramzan”. “Now the BJP government has ensured power to entire Uttar Pradesh and heralded a new period of development,” he added.

Shah inaugurated the Kaushambi Mahotsav and honoured several players of the ‘Sansad Khel Spardha’. Later, he laid the foundation stone for the Harihar music college in Azamgarh.

    MS Education Academy

He said Azamgarh was earlier known as the “centre of terrorism”, a reference to some of the accused in terror cases like the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts hailing from the district.

But now its identity has changed to a hub of development, Shah said.

“I was the home minister of Gujarat when there were bomb blasts in Ahmedabad. The police had caught the main ‘sutradhaar’ (culprit) of it from Azamgarh,” he said.

“I want to congratulate Yogi ji (CM Yogi Adityanath). In Azamgarh, which was considered the centre of terror across the country, he got the foundation of a music college laid to give respect to its heritage,” Shah said.

In Kaushambi, Shah hit out at Gandhi for claiming in the UK that democracy is under threat, accusing his party of surrounding the Indian democracy with three “naasuron” (ulcerous wounds) casteism, dynasty politics and appeasement. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi defeated all three and hence “you are afraid,” he added.

“They say democracy is in danger. Brother, democracy is not in danger, your family is in danger. It is not the idea of India which is in danger, it is the idea of dynasty, your politics of ‘parivarvad’ (dynasty), which are in danger. It is not the democracy of India, but the autocracy of your family, which is in danger,” the senior BJP leader said.

The BJP has accused Gandhi of “insulting” the country on foreign soil and demanded an apology, but the Congress leader has said his position that India’s democracy was under attack “was known” to all.

Shah also accused the Congress party of not allowing Parliament to function.

“Yesterday, the Parliament was adjourned. In the history of independent India, it has never happened that the Budget Session ended without a sitting and discussion… What was the reason? Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as Lok Sabha MP,” the Union minister said.

On March 18, a Surat court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case over his Modi surname remark. A day later, the Lok Sabha Secretariat suspended his Lok Sabha membership.

Congress accused the BJP of indulging in “vindictive politics” but the ruling party said it was the law.

On Friday, addressing the gathering in Kaushambi, Shah asked, “Who brought the law?”

He also said Gandhi was not the only leader whose membership has “gone” after sentencing by a court. “So far, the membership of 17 MLAs-MPs has gone, including that of Rahul Gandhi.”

Recalling his earlier visits to UP, before the BJP government came to power in the state, Shah said in Azamgarh there was hardly a night when power was available in rural areas. He also said it was difficult to imagine UP being “riot-free” but the Adityanath government has made it possible.

Slamming SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who contested and won from Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat in the previous election, Shah asked the people whether he “was he seen” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Had he come here to give vaccination doses? The prime minister got the entire country vaccinated, provided foodgrains to the poor,” the Union minister said.

  • Tennessee House expels one Dem over gun protest, targets two more

Tennessee House expels one Dem over gun protest, targets two more

    [ad_1]

    tennessee lawmaker expulsion 62879

State Rep. Justin Jones was removed from office in a largely party-line vote, 72-25, that was led by the Republican supermajority. The votes for the other two targeted Democrats are expected to have similar results.

Republicans dominate both chambers in the state Legislature, and the GOP reinforced its supermajority in the midterms by picking up more seats in the House. Democrats hold just 23 seats to Republicans’ 75.

Dubbed “the Tennessee Three” by fellow Democrats, Jones, Johnson and Pearson represent the three largest cities in Tennessee.

Ahead of the vote, Jones, a freshman lawmaker and community organizer, admonished Republicans for not enacting gun reform laws after multiple tragedies — inaction he said has sparked a movement for change.

“Your flexing of false power has awakened a generation of people who will let you know your time is up,” Jones, 27, warned Republicans.

A number of Republicans questioned Jones over the order of events the day of the protests, trying to pin them down on rule violations. Republican Rep. Gino Bulso, a sponsor of the expulsion resolutions, said that Jones “shows no remorse” when addressing the chamber before the vote.

The move by Republicans is remarkable for its naked partisanship and the speed with which it was executed. The process of removing lawmakers is usually a bipartisan undertaking in most states, often involving internal investigations following criminal charges or ethical lapses. In Tennessee, only two other House members have been removed before today’s proceedings, both after criminal violations or sexual misconduct.

Should all three members be expelled, special elections will be held in the three districts encompassing Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis. Nothing would hold those members back from running again in those races. Johnson suggested in an interview with POLITICO that if she’s voted out, she would try to return to the statehouse if her constituents desired it. The state constitution forbids lawmakers from being removed from office twice for the same offense.

GOP leadership could also face a lawsuit from the members, although it’s unclear at this point what grounds they could sue on.

The drama has skyrocketed the three to the national stage as Democrats have rallied around them and tried to steer that attention toward enacting gun reform laws in Tennessee and beyond. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that Tennessee Republicans are “shrugging in the face of yet another school shooting.”

The expulsion vote marks “just another anti-democratic effort to silence the American people for speaking out against the devastating consequences of gun violence,” Neha Patel, co-executive director of the State Innovation Exchange, a nonprofit supporting progressive state lawmakers, said in a letter released Thursday that was signed by hundreds of lawmakers from across the country.

Jones, talking with reporters after his expulsion, said the proceedings do “not seem like America.”

“To expel voices of opposition and dissent is a signal of authoritarianism and it is very dangerous,” he said.
