In run-up to Karnataka polls, Rahul minces no words to target BJP over Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The campaigning for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls that ended on Monday has witnessed former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi not mincing any words to target the BJP government at the Centre over the Adani issue, besides raising the “issues of corruption under the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government” in the poll-bound state.

The issue around Adani Group gained momentum earlier this year in January when US-based short seller Hindenburg alleged stock manipulation and fraud by the conglomerate.

The Adani Group has attacked Hindenburg as “an unethical short seller” and stated that the report by the New York-based entity was “nothing but a lie”.

    MS Education Academy

Rahul Gandhi, who kicked off his campaign trail from Karnataka’s Kolar on April 16, first raised the issue of the Adani Group in his public meeting.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha for his Modi surname remarks he made in Kolar in April 2019 during the Lok Sabha elections campaigning.

He was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP on March 23 this year following his conviction in a defamation case by a Surat court.

Rahul Gandhi raised issues around the Adani Group during his public meetings in Kolar, Humnabad, Vijaypura, Hanjal, Anekal and Mangaluru, besides other issues.

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi said: “They (BJP) do not want me to talk in Parliament. They are afraid that I will raise questions on Adani. They disqualified me from Parliament thinking that I would remain silent and I would be scared. I am not scared. I will again ask the Prime Minister.”

He had said: “Till I get answers, I will not stop. Disqualify me or put me in jail. It will not affect me.”

“In Parliament, I questioned the Prime Minister about his relationship with Adani. First, they switched off my mike and later BJP ministers told lies about me. When I sought to respond as per the right of a member, the Speaker did not allow me. They do not want me to speak in Parliament and hence disqualified me,” Rahul Gandhi had said in his speech in Kolar.

Rahul Gandhi, who addressed 23 public meetings and road shows in poll-bound Karnataka, also highlighted the alleged corruption rampant under the ruling BJP government in the state.

In his every public meeting in the state, he targeted the BJP government over the alleged ’40 per cent commission’ issue.

While addressing a public meeting in Karnataka’s Anekal on May 7, Rahul Gandhi targeted the BJP and said: “For the last three years, there is a BJP government in Karnataka and the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) is aware of corruption here. You only call it a ‘double engine government’. This time, the double engine is stolen.”

“PM Modi, please tell the people of Karnataka, which engine got how much out of 40 per cent commission,” he asked the Prime Minister while addressing a public meeting in Anekal on May 7.

He said that the contractors’ association in Karnataka wrote to the Prime Minister that 40 per cent commission was charged from them but Modi did not reply.

The Congress in Karnataka had designed its campaigning highlighting the corruption in the state government and also launched the PayCM campaign in the run-up to assembly polls.

Rahul Gandhi also highlighted the four promises, which are declared as guarantees for the people of Karnataka, which include — Gruha Jyothi (200 units of free electricity), Gruha Lakshmi-Rs 2,000 monthly to every woman head of the family, Anna Bhagya-10 kg of food grains of their choice (among rice, ragi, jowar, millet) to every person in a BPL family.

Rahul Gandhi also announced to provide free travel to all women in regular Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses.

Even his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too held 26 public meetings and road shows in the state, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed 36 public meetings and four press conferences in the poll-bound state.

Kharge, who also hails from Karnataka, has camped in the poll-bound state since April 16 to ensure the victory of the party.

Karnataka Congress in-charge and party general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala had also been camping in the state for last two and half months and had succeeded in keeping the Congress flock together.

Even former Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed a public meeting in Hubballi on May 6, her first electoral public meeting after a gap of four years.

Polling for the 224-member Assembly is scheduled on May 10 and counting of votes will take place on May 13.

  • ‘My friends ask: are you going here?’ Bristol City’s Alex Scott, transfer target of the elite

‘My friends ask: are you going here?’ Bristol City’s Alex Scott, transfer target of the elite

    [ad_1]

“I feel like I played all right … I don’t think I played that well,” Alex Scott says, doing himself something of a disservice as the Bristol City midfielder reflects on the night Manchester City came to town. A clip of Scott gliding into the box and away from Julián Álvarez and Riyad Mahrez and bursting between Kevin De Bruyne and Rico Lewis went viral. His modesty is indicative of his endearing personality and the standards he has set himself. “I wanted to show what I’ve been doing the past two years in the Championship against one of the best teams in the world.”

What the 19-year-old has been doing this season has earned him the English Football League young player of the year award, previously won by Brennan Johnson, Ollie Watkins and Jude Bellingham, an opponent in Scott’s youth days at Southampton and a source of inspiration. “I played against Jude a few times,” he says. “I remember playing in tournaments against Harvey Elliott quite a bit and Jamal Musiala, now of Bayern Munich, because we used to play Chelsea all the time. Players like Jude and Jamal who have gone on to the highest level possible, it gives motivation for young lads like myself who have played against them and seen how good they were as kids.”

Pep Guardiola gushed and Jack Grealish, one of Scott’s idols, was equally complimentary. Grealish later called Scott a “top, top talent” in a social media post. “I was speaking to him a little bit after the game and managed to get his shirt, so it was a special night all round,” Scott says. “To get the recognition from someone like him, it did mean a lot. He is friends with Andi [Weimann], who knows him from when they were at Villa together. I’m thankful to Andi for pulling me over to chat because I was a bit nervous.”

Scott’s teammate and flatmate, the striker Tommy Conway, another Bristol City youngster to shine this season, got Erling Haaland’s shirt. Scott was given the moniker the “Guernsey Grealish” because he also wears his socks and shin pads low. The versatile Scott – he has excelled as a wing-back, winger and at the base and tip of midfield – is the most-fouled player in the Championship this season. Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien resorted to drastic measures to stop him in February, jumping on Scott for an impromptu piggyback on halfway.

Scott laughs in the boardroom at Bristol City’s sleek training base and is at ease as he discusses everything from growing up on the Channel Islands and joining Guernsey FC for pre-season at 15 to winning the Under-19 European Championship with England and studying clips of Grealish, Bellingham and Frenkie de Jong. “That’s the level I want to be playing at one day,” he says. “I look at players with a similar playing style to me in terms of dribbling and breaking lines. You can watch all the clips you want but if you don’t put the work in on the grass then you’re not going to progress. I’m doing extras when I can and trying things at training that I know I need to work on, for example shooting, dribbling and passing on my left foot.”

Scott, who made his 100th senior appearance last weekend and became Guernsey’s youngest-ever player when making his debut against Haywards Heath Town aged 16 in September 2019, speaks with striking maturity. He joined Bristol City from Guernsey on a free three months later, after scoring a perfect hat-trick in a trial against Yate Town. He was fast-tracked to the first team and Scott’s ability to carve open defences with a killer pass or surging run have made him a fans’ favourite from virtually the moment Nigel Pearson handed him his debut aged 17. Pearson is adamant Scott will play for England’s senior side.

Even the way Scott talks about tactical fouls, while discussing playing in a deeper midfield role for his country, belies his years. “Sometimes it needs a player to almost hit someone a little bit and go through a player, in the nicest way possible. If you want to be a top midfielder who can play holding midfield, No 8 or a No 10, you need to have all those parts of your game.” Scott has always had a degree of bite. “I can get a bit feisty in a game if I need to. I think if you ask my parents they will say the same thing about when I was a young lad playing at home.”

Scott spent almost five years at Southampton and a season at Bournemouth. Then came a big decision and frank conversations with his parents, Steph and Noel. “My mum and dad knew I wasn’t happy playing,” Scott says. “They sat me down and said: ‘Bournemouth want you go to back, but do you want to do it?’ It was upsetting my mum a lot because she knew I wasn’t happy. When I got released from Southampton, I gave up a little bit, I lost interest a bit. From the age of eight to 13, I never really had a social life in Guernsey. I’d go to school on a Friday, fly to Southampton, Sunday I’d fly home and then I’d be at school again. I never really had a chance to enjoy my life as a 13-year-old kid, to go out and see my friends and play with them.

“You know what dads are like, they want you to play. But he knew I wasn’t happy. I told him straight and said: ‘I just want to play in Guernsey.’ He was fine with that and that took a bit of weight off my shoulders because it felt at times like I was almost playing for him a little bit when I was going over. I knew I hated it when I was flying over every weekend but I didn’t want to upset my dad or anything.”

His love for the game has certainly returned. “Monday Night Football, Champions League, Friday nights – it is on at all times in the household,” he says, smiling. “We’re either watching something on the telly or playing two-touch on the balcony.” He occasionally plays Xbox with his friends and elder brother, Callum. “Other than that, I’ll speak with my parents, the normal 19-year-old life, really.”

Scott never expected to be in this position. “I remember being in food tech at school, with my friends, speaking about these young players that were coming through and playing at the highest stage: Karamoko Dembélé, Louie Barry, players like that. Two years later, my first England [Under-18s] squad [in March 2021], I’m playing with those players and my friends are texting me like: ‘What are they actually like? What are they like off the pitch? How good are they?’

    skip past newsletter promotion

“Alfie Devine, who I now play with for England [Under-20s], is probably one of my closest mates. Being a Spurs fan I remember when he scored against Marine at 16. I was watching that with my dad at home and thinking: ‘He’s going to be the next one to come through at Spurs.’ Now I’m best mates with him at England level. That in itself is surreal for me.”

Now he is the subject of interest from the Premier League’s elite. Scott has told his mum, who has signed up to receive Bristol City notifications on Twitter, to treat transfer talk with caution. “My friends ask me: ‘Are you going here? Are you going here?’ I just ignore them, basically.”

Many Bristol City supporters are resigned to Saturday’s home match against Burnley being Scott’s last at Ashton Gate. His immediate focus, he says, is on making the England squad for May’s Under-20 World Cup or June’s Under-21 European Championship. Is the 2026 World Cup on his radar? “What’s that, three years from now … I’ll be 22. Why not?”

A little more than three years on from Isthmian League Division One South East trips with Guernsey to Sittingbourne and Cray Valley Paper Mills, where he played in front of a crowd of 56, Scott is determined to continue his impressive trajectory. “It has been a bit of a whirlwind few years,” he says. “I don’t really want to look back on how it’s gone, I just want to keep going.”

Chairperson Waqf Board Reviews Performance, Target Achievements of Waqf Engineering Wing

Directs for speedy, target-based execution of Works Plan at all major Shrines and sub-units

Srinagar, Apr 25 (GNS): In an effort to make the best use of upcoming working season and to gear up Engineering Wing for execution of a large number of major and minor works across the Shrines and Sub Units of J&K UT, Chairperson J&K Waqf Board, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, Tuesday chaired a review meeting of Engineering Wing of the Waqf Board.

Dr. Andrabi on the occasion issued strict instructions regarding expeditious and time bound execution of all major and minor civil works.

Chairperson Waqf expressed strong disappointment over neglect of all major shrines over the years by erstwhile Waqf authorities and issued directions for immediate course correction and speedy execution of works to improve facilities for devotees at all Shrines.

Dr. Andrabi also reviewed the progress achieved so far & was apprised by the Engineering Wing about limitations in achieving targets because of the winter season & high altitude location of some major shrines.

Major focus of discussion remained the execution of works at shrines with large footfall of devotees, like, Aasar-e-Shareef Hazratbal Srinagar, Makhdoom Sahib (R.A) Shrine, Dastageer Sahib (R.A) Khanyar, Ziyarat Baba Reshi (R.A), Aishmuqam Shrine, Charar-i-Sharif Shrine and several other shrines where people offer significant donations for execution of works & improvement of facilities.

Pertinently, Waqf, under the leadership of Dr Andrabi has adopted the policy of making expenditures at shrines strictly as per income of the shrines and has stopped the practice of diverting donations from one shrine to another. The meeting was attended by Tehsildar and Executive Engineer Waqf Board, all Junior Engineers and Supervisors of Waqf.(GNS)

Oppn leaders target UP govt after Atiq Ahmad, brother shot dead

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Opposition leaders on Saturday questioned the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and demanded that the state government be dismissed after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj.

The “cold-blooded” killings are the “height of anarchy” in Uttar Pradesh, BSP MP Danish Ali claimed.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said crime has reached its peak in Uttar Pradesh and criminals are unfazed.

    MS Education Academy

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

The brothers, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm. The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels.

Reacting to the incident, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet in Hindi: “Crime has reached its peak in Uttar Pradesh and the criminals are unfazed. When someone can be shot dead amidst a police cordon, then what about the safety of the general public? An atmosphere of fear is being created among the public due to this and it seems that some people are deliberately creating such an atmosphere.”

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary asked if ‘jungle raj’ prevails in the state.

“Nobody is sympathising with Atiq Ahmad because a criminal should be punished. But anyone who will see this video will question if we are a democracy. Every criminal has the right to be heard in court and be convicted there. But you can see they were killed in police custody in the open,” he said.

He further said, “The chief minister should answer what kind of law and order he has established in the state. Is this not jungle raj and a ground to call for emergency rule in UP?”

Video footage showed a man thrusting a gun at Ahmad’s head as he talks to reporters and the former SP MP collapsing. The footage also showed the three assailants firing at Ahmad and Ashraf even after they had fallen.

The bullet-riddled bodies of Ahmad and Ashraf were taken away from the spot as tension gripped the area after the sensational killings.

In a tweet, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said, “Two murders in UP: 1) Atiq Ahmed and brother Ashraf 2) Rule of law.”

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP from Amroha Danish Ali said the “cold-blooded” murder of Ahmad and his brother is the “height of anarchy” in Uttar Pradesh.

“This can’t happen without a go-ahead from the top. In any other democracy the state government must have been dismissed for such a heinous crime against the rule of law,” he said in a tweet.

The three assailants who fired at Ahmad and Ashraf were arrested immediately after the incident.

In a tweet in Hindi, Uttar Pradesh minister Swatantra Dev Singh said, “Sins and virtue are accounted for in this birth…”

The tragic end of Ahmad and his brother came on a day the ex-MP’s son Asad, who was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, was buried in Prayagraj.

Ahmad and his brother were brought to Prayagraj for a court hearing in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case and were remanded in police custody.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his Dhoomanganj residence here on February 24.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Ahmad, Ashraf, Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

  • Hindu fundamental groups using Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanthi to target minorities: Report

Hindu fundamental groups using Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanthi to target minorities: Report

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hindu fundamental organizations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, along with their affiliates, are using the Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra and Hanuman Jayanthi procession on big scale to target minorities said a report by the Citizens and Lawyers Initiative. Titled ‘Routes of Wrath – Weaponizing Religious Processions’, it was released with a foreword from Justice Rohinton F. Nariman, former Judge, Supreme Court of India reveals.

The book in depth explains about the communal violence and arson incidents reported in 12 states in India during the Sri Rama Navami Shobha Yatra processions. It is edited by senior advocate Chander Uday Singh.

    What the report says

Ram Navami processions in particular, have been taken over by militant Hindutva organisations over the years, as the figure of Ram is central to the political imagination of the Sangh, said the report. A Shobha yatra, which translates to a “shining” or “glorious” procession, was different from traditional rath-yatras, which are organised by temples and are generally limited to nearby areas.

    MS Education Academy

The Ram Navami Shobha yatras are grand processions of pomp and ceremony attempting to cover entire cities, involving cavalcades of vehicles, each carrying dozens of men, shouting slogans and frequently wielding arms, stated the report.

In April 2022, India witnessed communal violence breaking out in as many as nine states, along with incidents of provocation and low-grade violence in three others. “In all of them, the catalyst for the violence was the same:  religious processions celebrating the Hindu festivals of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, followed by targeted attacks on Muslim-owned properties, businesses and places of worship,” the report said.

The violence witnessed in 2022 and 2023 wasn’t the first time India has seen mob violence under the garb of religious festivities. However, the report noted that it took place on a much larger, seemingly coordinated scale than previous years. It elaborated that, “a breakdown of the rule of law was observed and documented in most of these towns and villages. The immediate violence associated with Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti processions saw more than a hundred homes and shops destroyed or burned down, vehicles set ablaze in every city, and multiple places of worship damaged or vandalized.”

The report speaks about the government action following the violence in forms bulldozing of houses of minoriy communities. “The riots was followed in quick order by State action in some of these cities and towns, which saw further destruction in the form of illegal demolitions of houses and shops, to punish those that the state branded as ‘rioters’ or ‘anti- social’ elements.  The state-sponsored violence has also caused a crisis of displacement of Muslim families in riot-hit areas, either rendered homeless by the demolitions or having been forced to flee from their homes in fear of further state harassment.

Dating back to the pre-2000 era, when communal violence gained grounds, the report discusses how religious processions are precursors to communal violence. “In the 1970s and 1980s there were several communal riots that were triggered by processions that doubled up as a show of majoritarian strength. In the 1980s in particular, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) branded these as ‘yatras’. VHP reacted to the 1981 Meenakshipuram conversions of 150 Dalit families to Islam by taking out ‘ekatmata yajna yatras’,” the report poined out.

“It is important to note not only the nature of the (Ram Navami) processions and their strategies of inciting violence, but also the fact that the dates chosen for said instigation in 2022 were Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, both of which fell within the month of Ramzan. This was used by right- wing institutions of the state and the media in states like Gujarat to further conspiracy theories projecting Muslims uniformly as the assailants – whereas they have suffered the most losses,” it further highlighted.

These affected States are Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Goa and West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The report by the collective also points out that communal violence are pre-planned in a majority of cases in the country. Wherever it was reported, processions took to a new route with lone intentions to create trouble.

In 2022, during Hanuman Jayanthi processions, violence were reported in Jahangirpuri locality of Delhi. The report quoting various sources pointed out, “A huge crowd had gathered with a majority of the participants armed with swords, knives, baseball bats and hockey sticks. A few of them were also brandishing kattas (country-made pistols). The first two rallies passed peacefully after they weren’t allowed to pass through the mosque on Kushal Road The third and final rally didn’t follow the prescribed route and reached Kushal Road crossing through B and C blocks. At around 5 pm, the procession had reached the mosque in Block C, Jahangirpuri, where the provocative nature of the procession caused violence to break out.”

In another instance in Himmatnagar, the biggest taluka of Sabarkantha district in North-Gujarat, a procession of 500-600 people organized by Antarashtriya Hindu Parishad (AHP) entered Ashraf Nagar in Chhapariya area in a Muslim-dominated area between two Hindu localities – Shakti Nagar and Mahavir Nagar. The procession involved loud provocative songs, sword wielding and aggressive behaviour while marching with saffron flags they stopped in front of a mosque, the report said.

BJP launches ‘Congress files’ to target grand-old party over corruption

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday hit out at the Congress by releasing the first episode of ‘Congress Files’, a video series alleging corruption during the grand-old party’s 70-year rule.

The three-minute video featured former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who led both the tenures of the UPA and former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

In the video, the BJP alleged that Congress has looted Rs 48,20,69,00,00,000 of the public’s hard-earned money.

    MS Education Academy

The BJP said that with Rs 48 trillion 20 billion 69 crore, many works could have been done – from security to the development of the country.

“Using this amount, 24 INS Vikrant, 300 Rafale jets, and 1,000 Mangal Missions could have been made or purchased. But the country had to bear the cost of Congress’ corruption, and it lagged behind in the race of progress,” the video message added.

“During UPA’s tenure from 2004-2014, many scams happened… Coal scam of Rs 1.86 lakh crore, 2G Spectrum scam of Rs 1.76 lakh crore, MGNREGA scam of Rs 10 lakh crore, Commonwealth scam of Rs 70,000 crore, Rs 362 crore bribe in the helicopter deal with Italy, Rs 12 crore bribe for the chairman of the railway board,” the BJP said in the video message.

At the end of the video message, the BJP stated, “This is only the jhanki (trailer) of Congress’ corruption, the movie is still not over.”

  • Feds target alcohol pricing in new antitrust probe

Feds target alcohol pricing in new antitrust probe

    [ad_1]

    politico

The investigation is in the early stages, said the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss a confidential matter. FTC investigations can stretch on for years and are often closed without the agency taking any action. Any case would have to be brought either in federal court or the FTC’s in-house administrative court, and, if successful, the agency could get an order prohibiting the offending business practices.

The FTC recently opened a similar investigation into Pepsi and Coca-Cola involving pricing in the soft drink market.

The FTC declined to comment. Southern Glazer did not respond for comment.

The alcohol investigation is yet another sign that the Biden administration is expanding its efforts to rein in big companies and flex its antitrust powers, in the technology world and beyond. That includes the world’s biggest tech firms, such as Apple and Google, and more traditional companies like Southern Glazer.

According to a December 2022 Forbes report, Southern Glazer is the 11th largest privately held company in the U.S., with around $25 billion in revenue and distributing over 7,000 different brands of alcohol, wine, beer and other beverages. Republic National Distributing Company, the second largest alcohol distributor, which is not known to be a target in the probe, had 2022 revenues of around $12 billion, according to Forbes. Combined, the two companies account for the bulk of U.S. alcoholic beverage distribution.

The Robinson-Patman Act, aimed at promoting a level playing field between small retailers and large chain stores, has been largely dormant for more than 20 years.

The law was enforced regularly for decades by the FTC, then all but abandoned more than 20 years ago. The agency’s last case under the law was a settlement with spice company McCormick. Prior to that its most recent case was from 1988 against book publishers including Simon & Schuster and Random House. The move away from Robinson-Patman enforcement came amid increasing focus at the FTC and Justice Department on harm to consumers, namely higher prices, rather than harm to competitors.

The FTC however wants to revive enforcement. The agency’s chair, Lina Khan, as well as Democratic commissioner Alvaro Bedoya, have, since they joined the agency, stated their intention to bring more cases under the law.

The FTC has “been looking closely at the Robinson-Patman Act,” Khan said at an event on Monday. “We’re looking closely at areas where we might be able to do that in short order.”

President Biden, in his 2021 executive order on competition policy, specifically called out the need to stop “unlawful trade practices in the beer, wine, and spirits markets, such as certain exclusionary, discriminatory, or anti-competitive distribution practices, that hinder smaller and independent businesses or new entrants from distributing their products.”

In its investigation, the FTC is seeking detailed sales data on thousands of brands of alcohol and wine sold around the U.S. by both Southern Glazer and its competing distributors, according to the people. The probe includes questions about pricing and benefits Southern Glazer offers to retailers including quantity-based discounts, rebates, promotions, as well as marketing, warehousing, merchandising and other services.

The agency is also asking about the competitive dynamics in the retail market for wine and alcohol and how Southern Glazer allocates wine and alcohol between different retailers, including whether and how it limits distribution to certain customers, the people said.

Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh alleges terror plot to target him

Hyderabad: Suspended BJP MLA T. Raja Singh has claimed that a terrorist outfit planned to target him during the Ram Navami procession in Hyderabad on Thursday.

He posted on social media a letter from a resident of the old city of Hyderabad to the commissioner of police claiming that a terrorist planned to hurl bombs at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, state BJP office and Ram Navami procession on March 31.

The letter, written by Uma Maheswari, alleged that the main target of the terrorist working for Bahrain-based Mukhtar Brigades is Raja Singh, a member of Telangana Legislative Assembly from Goshamahal constituency.

Raja Singh, who is scheduled to lead the procession, asked state home Minister Mahmood Ali, Director General of Police and Police Commissioner if they verified the claims made in the letter. “Update us abt this as Lakhs of Ram Bhakts joins this procession,” tweeted Raja Singh.

The controversial MLA had last month lodged a complaint with the police stating that he was receiving threatening calls from Pakistan-based phone numbers.

“I have been receiving threatening calls every day. I have given written complaints many times to the police department when the callers are aggressive and abusive but no action has been taken. Not even one person has been arrested who threatened me as of now,” he had said.

Following the MLA’s claims, police had assigned him a new bullet-resistant vehicle.

The MLA was arrested by the police in August last year for making certain comments hurting religious sentiments of Muslims. He was sent to jail on August 25 after the Hyderabad police commissioner had invoked PD Act. BJP had also suspended him from the party.

Raja Singh was released from jail on November 9, after spending two months in jail following his arrest under the Preventive Detention Act.

The Telangana High Court had set aside the police commissioner’s order and released the MLA on bail but directed him not to make any speech or comment which created hatred among communities.
