Fake investment declarations bring no jobs, Nara Lokesh takes a dig at AP govt

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh on Monday said fake investments declarations will bring no jobs to the people of Andhra Pradesh. He was referring to the chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s recent announcement of investment proposals worth Rs 13 lakh crore at the Global Investors Summit (GIS).

Jagan on Friday said the state has received investment proposals worth Rs 13 lakh crore with an employment opportunity for six lakh people.

Lokesh accused the Andhra Pradesh government of deceiving the people by re-announcing old investment deals at the recently held Global Investors Summit with companies like Aurobindo, Greenko and Adani.

Speaking to the media at Vepulabayalu in Annamayya district, Lokesh said, “On forging any deal, governments openly declare all the details. During Chandrababu Naidu’s regime all information regarding investments and deals was exhibited online.”

“The YSRCP-led government is not showcasing any MoUs, agreements, deals, endorsements from the companies on documents,” Lokesh said, adding that the government and the companies have exchanged MoUs in “non-paper format only.”

He claimed that the company Indosol began with an initial investment of Rs 1 lakh but the company announced investments worth Rs 76,000 crore in the state.

“All the directors of the company are from Pulivendula,” said Lokesh about Indosol. “Jagan is offering 25,000 acres of land to this company. Another company, ACB, with a turnover of Rs 120 crores that employs 250 people has promised an investment of Rs 1.2 lakh crores. How can we believe it?” he questioned.

Speaking about the absence of Andhra Pradesh at WEF 2023 summit in Davos, he said, “Jagan conveniently missed the World Economic Forum in 2023. Can any aspiring state afford to miss a forum like WEF?”

On investment opportunities created by the TDP government, Lokesh said, “Between 2014 and 2019, we established a plethora of industries. Speaking in the Assembly, the late Mekapati Goutham Reddy said that 39,450 industries were established between 2014 and 2019 by the erstwhile TDP government, creating 5,13,350 jobs.”

  • Ecuadorian justice takes a Japanese company to trial for modern slavery

Ecuadorian justice takes a Japanese company to trial for modern slavery

    [ad_1]

EL PAÍS offers the América Futura section open for its daily and global informative contribution on sustainable development. If you want to support our journalism, subscribe here.

It’s historical. Ecuadorian justice has brought a company to trial for the first time for the crime of trafficking in persons for the purpose of labor exploitation: Furukawa Plantaciones CA, a Japanese firm that markets and exports abaca, a variety of banana used to make paper money in half the world. The judge in charge, Susana Sotomayor, also named Marcelo Almeida as the direct perpetrator and Hugo Chalen and Paúl Bolaños as co-perpetrators of the crime, to which is also added that of child and adolescent labor. Iván Segarra, former field administrator and Adrián Herrera, manager since 2019, the other two defendants are dismissed. Although both the Prosecutor’s Office and the private prosecution appealed this latest decision, they celebrate this first step in which they have been working for almost four years. “We believe that calling Furukawa to trial was very accurate and coherent given the more than one hundred elements collected by the Prosecutor’s Office,” explains Alejandra Zambrano, a lawyer who is a member of the case’s litigation team. “Above all, it seems fair to the victims, who have the right to demand accountability, sanctions, and reparation,” she added minutes after the hearing held this Monday.

“This is not another case. In no way,” said Sotomayor, who stressed that the victims had in common “vulnerability in their history and lack of job opportunities.” It is the first time in the history of the Andean country that a company and three senior officials will sit on the bench for practices of modern slavery. After basing the strength of the case on the intervention of at least eight State portfolios, the judge intoned the “mea culpa”: “I ask myself a question: What was the participation of public institutions before the start of the criminal process? Are they not the calls to guarantee the right to integrity of Ecuadorians? Aren’t these institutions the ones that have to guarantee the health of citizens? Aren’t these state institutions the ones that have to provide guarantees to citizens? What happened? What happened to these institutions?

These emphatic statements by the judge are also questioned in the other process currently open in the Constitutional Court, in which it is currently being debated whether or not the State is responsible. Patricia Carrión, a lawyer for the Ecumenical Commission on Human Rights, says that “they won half.” “They, the dismissed, are also part of those indicated by the victims of the case. That’s why we’re going to appeal.” However, the joy is palpable: “The plaintiffs had never won anything. They always believed that they had no way to access justice. It’s a very exciting time.”

For Santiago*, 57, still a resistance worker for the company, this is great news. “What I have understood is that we are winners, right? It satisfies me a lot. My little heart flutters with joy. I don’t know if my colleagues have heard the hearing but for my part I thank God and the team of lawyers. I send you a bone-breaking hug”. And he adds: “The judge understood what the company was doing to us. The evidence is in our favor.”

The Japanese company had been in the spotlight since 2018, with a report from the Ombudsman’s Office, published in the first half of the following year, which reported a situation of servitude or modern slavery during the almost six decades of the company’s history. . The agency detailed “subhuman” housing conditions, child and adolescent labor and the absolute absence of labor rights from its own census of 1,244 people. That is why he urged ten State portfolios to put an end to the abuses. And in subsequent reports they confirmed the complaints of the entity. “It was shown that they lived in terrible conditions,” the current ombudsman, César Marcel Córdova Valverde, explained to América Futura a few days ago. “I continue working in the company because I have to eat something”, continues Santiago*. “We are not lying, we have led a life of much exploitation. The only justice that will be given is when they recognize what they did and comply with the reparation measures.

The private prosecution demands public apologies and measures of non-repetition. “In addition to, obviously, financial compensation to the victims, who are mostly people for whom it is practically impossible to rejoin the labor market,” Alejandro Morales, lawyer for the 106 plaintiffs, explained by telephone. Although the process “just started” there is relief among the plaintiffs and their litigants. “It’s a first step, but it’s the one that touched,” Zambrano said.

*None of the testimonial names are real because the legal process is still ongoing.

“As you have said, our support is not ‘charity,’” Yellen told Zelenskyy. “It’s an ‘investment in global security and democracy.’”

Yellen’s trip comes a week after President Joe Biden made his own surprise visit to Kyiv, a show of support that marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

On Friday, the U.S. announced a new $10 billion aid package to Ukraine to support energy and budget costs, as well as $2 billion in security assistance. The U.S. has so far provided Ukraine with close to $50 billion aid, Yellen said Monday in Kyiv.

“Just as your life is a part of the history of Ukraine – I believe that Ukraine is a central part of the history of the free world. And you are writing our history right now,” Yellen said. “As you do, I hope you know this: America stands with you in this fight for freedom. And we will be by your side to help you rebuild.”

  • F1 | Barcelona takes away the last chicane for the Spanish GP

F1 | Barcelona takes away the last chicane for the Spanish GP

    [ad_1]

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is back to old-fashioned and for the 2023 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix it will remove the last chicane.

Introduced several years ago in the hope of seeing an increase in overtaking, the variant that effectively cut through the last two corners didn’t actually bring the desired show and for the event on 2-4 June it was decided to take a step back.

The management of the Catalan track, in collaboration with the FIA and the F1 Race Director, Niels Wittich, opted to readopt the last two right-hand corners which then lead onto the starting straight, a decision that had already been discussed for several months and that today it was made official.

Stuart Robertson (FIA Safety Manager) and Wittich carried out the inspection giving a positive opinion to return to the 4.657km version, also approving the new safety barriers installed outside in the escape routes in the last sector.

However, Barcelona remains with double homologation and the chicane can be used according to the needs and choices of the various championships that will use the circuit for their events.

In 2023 we will then see other changes, such as the widening of the run-off area in turn 1 with 70m of gravel and a new FIA fence to protect turns 1 and 2, thus significantly improving the safety of the drivers and insiders.

The service roads surrounding the area and a part of the public area will also be rearranged by March, while for spectators there will be a new billboard located at the exit of the pit lane, still in the form of a tower and with more modern graphics.

Finally, the curbs were repainted, with further renovation works for the areas reserved for the public and the toilets.

  • Akshay Kumar takes onus of his films not working, says it’s 100% his fault

Akshay Kumar takes onus of his films not working, says it’s 100% his fault

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, who had a string of flops with his recent film ‘Selfiee’ being another addition, said that the films not working at the box-office are solely his fault and one must not blame the audience for not liking a particular film.

As per media reports, the actor said that he has faced the similar issue early during his career when his 16 films tanked at the box-office in a row.

He said: “This is not happening to me for the first time. In my career, I have had 16 consecutive flops at a time. There was a time when I had eight films in a row that did not work. Now, I have had three-four films in a row that did not work. The thing is that it happens due to your own fault, film ka na chalna (a film not working). The audience has changed, you need to change, you need to dismantle yourself. You have to start again because the audience requires you to see something else.”

Akshay said: “It is a great alarm, aapki film nahi chal rahi to galti aapki hai (If your films are not working, it is your fault). When your films flop in a row, it is an alarm for you that it is time for you to change. Main koshish kar raha hun, wahi kar sakta hoon (I am trying to change, that is all I can do).”

He also said that he’d like to tell everyone that when films don’t work, the audience must not be blamed.

“Do not blame the audience or anyone else. It is my fault, 100 per cent. Aapki film na chalna is not because of the audience (a film not working is your fault only). It is because of what you selected. Maybe you have not given the right ingredients in the film,” he added.

  • I don’t have a house, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP takes a dig

I don’t have a house, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP takes a dig

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said he has never owned a house and noted that this experience had helped him “change” his Bharat Jodo Yatra and connect with the people.

Addressing the Congress plenary session in Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Gandhi said he wanted everyone who joined the Yatra to feel that they were coming home.

He recalled the incident in 1977 when his family was preparing to leave their government accommodation.

“There was a strange atmosphere in the house. I went to mummy and asked her what happened. Ma told me that we are leaving the house.

“Till that time I used to think it was our house. So I asked my mother why we are leaving our house. Then my mom told me for the first time that it was not our house, but the government’s and we have to leave it now,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi said he asked his mother Sonia Gandhi where they would go next. “‘Nahi maloom’ (don’t know) my mother said. I was taken aback. I used to think it was our house.

“52 years and I still don’t have a house. Our family house is in Allahabad and that is also not ours. I live at 12, Tughaq Lane but that is not my house,” he said.

Gandhi then spoke about his Yatra that was launched on September 7 last year in Kanyakumari, traversing 12 states and two Union Territories, and concluded in Kashmir in January-end .

“When I moved from Kanyakumari, I asked myself what is my responsibility… I came up with an idea… I told my people this 20-25 ft area around me is going to be my house for the next four months. This house will move with me.

“Whoever comes here- be it rich or poor, elderly or young, from whichever religion or state or from abroad or even an animal…. they should feel like they have come home..and while leaving, they should feel they are leaving their home… The day I did it, the Yatra changed,” Gandhi said.

The BJP, however, took a swipe at Gandhi, saying his remarks show the “sense of entitlement” in the Gandhi family as it enjoys “responsibility without power”.

“Rahul ji used to think that all the houses and cars he was using belonged to him. If you feel that the government’s house is your house, who can evict us – this is called the sense of entitlement,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters.

He said Gandhi undertook his Yatra only now, but BJP’s two prime ministers spent their life crisscrossing the country and learning about it as ‘pracharaks’.

“After 52 years of age, he is thinking what should be his responsibility… after giving up the Congress presidentship… Your motto and that of the Gandhi family is one – power without responsibility,” Patra said.

He said Mallikarjun Kharge is the Congress president, but the whole party plenary is focused on the members of the Gandhi family.

PDP takes out protest march against imposition of property tax in J-K

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: The PDP on Saturday took out a protest march to demand roll-back of the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s decision to impose property tax in the Union Territory.

The Union Territory administration on Tuesday ordered the imposition of property tax in municipal areas from April 1. The tax rates will be five per cent of taxable annual value for residential properties and six per cent for commercial properties, it stated.

Dozens of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) activists led by Suhail Bukhari, its chief spokesperson, took out a protest march from the party headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park here.

The party activists raised slogans against the imposition of the property tax and demanded its roll-back.

The protesters tried to march towards the Lal Chowk city centre but were stopped by a contingent of police near the Traffic Headquarters. They later turned back and dispersed.

Speaking to reporters, Bukhari alleged that the government was trying to economically weaken the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“First, our political rights were taken away, then democracy was buried here, poor people were harassed in the name of demolition and their houses bulldozed.

“Now the property tax. The economic situation in Jammu and Kashmir has become worse in the last five years. There is no employment (generation), industrial sector here is weak,” he said.

The PDP chief spokesperson said the administration should have held people’s hand “but, contrary to that, the BJP government is trying to further the troubles of the people”.

He demanded that the government roll back the decision.
