Mahua Moitra takes potshots at govt over Adani issue, shell companies

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Monday took potshots at the government while sharing a Corporate Affairs Ministry’s two years old press release which stated that more than 2.38 lakh shell companies were identified between 2018 and 2021.

She tweeted the official statement while tagging it to her earlier tweet posted in the morning, where she had tagged a response to a Rajya Sabha question on shell companies, with the government saying that data regarding offshore shell companies owned by Indian citizens is “unavailable”.

The question was by MP John Brittas – who had asked for “details of offshore shell companies whose Ultimate Beneficial Ownership (UBO) are held by Indian citizens”.

In its reply, the government said: “It is submitted that an offshore shell company is not defined in the Acts administered by the Ministry of Finance. Data/details regarding offshore shell companies owned by Indian citizens is not available.”

Sharing both responses, Moitra tweeted: “Government identified 2,38,223 shell companies without any specific definition in law. Blinkers on only when it comes to Adani Group family shells in Mauritius!”

“How can the government take action against Adani? Finance Ministry does not know definition of shell firm! Written answer in RS says no clue, hence no action,” she tweeted, while sharing a picture of the proverbial “three wise monkeys” and tagging Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Bypoll impact: Mamata replaces minority affairs minister, takes charge herself

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The defeat in the recent bypoll to the Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, which hinted at substantial erosion of a dedicated vote-bank in the minority-dominated erstwhile Trinamool Congress stronghold, has prompted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to replace the minister in charge of minority affairs and madrasa education and take charge of the same herself.

The decision to remove Ghulam Rabbani as the minority affairs minister was announced on Monday, when it was also said that the affairs of the department will now be under the purview of the Chief Minister. Rabbani has been transferred to the horticulture department.

The current minister of state in charge of MSMEs and textiles department, Chandranath Sinha, has been given the additional charge of minister of state for minority affairs and madrasa education.

In the Sagardighi bypoll, Left Front supported Congress candidate Bayron Biswas had defeated Trinamool’s Debashis Banerjee by a margin of 22,980 votes. The result came as a shocker for Trinamool, as Sagardighi — a minority-dominated constituency — was a traditional stronghold of the ruling party, where it won by big margins since 2011.

Recently, Trinamool had also reshuffled the party’s minority cell.

Now the Chief Minister herself taking charge of the minority affairs and madrasa education department becomes significant in West Bengal’s evolving political situation.

Israel-UAE free trade deal takes effect

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: A free trade agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come into effect, the first such economic deal the Jewish state reached with an Arab country.

Officials from both countries signed a customs agreement on Sunday, enabling the free trade agreement signed in May 2022 to come into effect, an official statement said.

The customs agreement was signed by Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and UAE Ambassador to Israel Mohamed Al Khaja in the presence of Netanyahu, reports Xinhua news agency.

According to the statement, the free trade deal is expected to reduce customs duties and lower the cost of living while increasing business between the two countries.

Additionally, Israeli companies will gain access to UAE government tenders, it added.

“The taking effect of the free trade agreement is important news for the Israeli economy, for the strengthening of ties with the UAE and is further testament to the importance of the Abraham Accords,” Cohen said.

The Abraham Accords are a series of US-brokered deals Israel reached with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco in 2020 to establish diplomatic relations.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the UAE is Israel’s 16th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume reaching over $2.5 billion in 2022.

Israel is currently in talks with Bahrain to sign a free trade agreement.

  • Liberal Manhattan DA takes on Trump in perilous legal fight

Liberal Manhattan DA takes on Trump in perilous legal fight

    [ad_1]

    override lede bragg

“You need to respect our judgment, our decades of experience as prosecutors and defense lawyers, and the work that we have put into the case, more than you have to this point,” Pomerantz wrote in a private letter to Bragg, according to his book, saying Bragg doubted their assessment of the case as ripe for prosecution.

Those who know Bragg, however, said Pomerantz’s description of him didn’t match their experience. “He generally was quite trusting of the people who worked for him,” said Brian Mahanna, who was chief of staff and deputy attorney general in the New York attorney general’s office alongside Bragg. “He’s not the type of person to just unnecessarily second-guess the views of those who work for him.”

Just over a year later, however, Bragg now appears to have eased into the job. He expanded the office’s hate crimes unit, hired new leadership for its sex crimes division and created a unit to combat workplace wage theft.

Bragg, flanked by a heavy security detail, appeared at a recent dinner for alumni of the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office hosted by former U.S Attorney Preet Bharara. There, Bragg schmoozed with his former colleagues and huddled with Damian Williams, the current Manhattan U.S. attorney, according to attendees.

And now he is poised to pursue a criminal indictment of the former president in a case centered on a hush-money payment made to the porn actress Stormy Daniels at the height of the 2016 presidential campaign. Reimbursement for the payment was falsely recorded as legal expenses, according to federal prosecutors who first examined the case, and Bragg’s office is considering bringing a felony charge based on the falsification of business records. The charge carries a possible prison term of up to four years.

In December, Bragg hired Matthew Colangelo, a former senior Justice Department official who led the New York attorney general’s civil inquiry into Trump, to help oversee the district attorney’s investigation. In recent days, the office has brought a parade of witnesses before the grand jury and invited Trump to speak to the grand jury himself (he declined), a sign the inquiry is in its final stages.

On Saturday, Trump, who is a declared candidate for president in 2024, urged his followers to protest the likely charges against him, raising alarms about how his supporters might respond. Bragg privately told his staffers that “we do not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office or threaten the rule of law in New York.”

Trump, his allies and other GOP officials have been promoting the likely prosecution as politically charged and branding Bragg as allied with Soros, and Trump himself has described Bragg as “racist.”

For those who know Bragg, it is precisely his deliberative nature and lack of interest in politics that may help insulate him as he goes up against Trump, who built his business reputation and presidency by bullying and political swashbuckling.

“He is a lawyer and prosecutor first, absolutely. I think he would probably tell you he is not a political strategist or James Carville-type,” said Phillip Walzak, a consultant who works with Bragg’s office to distribute funds for the CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance. “I think that is actually what you want in these moments – someone who is about the facts and about the law rather than someone who has a political ax to grind.”

Even if Bragg succeeds, though, it may come with the price of a long, messy public battle.

Rebecca Roiphe, a former assistant district attorney in Manhattan who served on one of Bragg’s transition committees, said she feels “a little bit conflicted” about the likely Trump prosecution.

Bragg has received some criticism for pursuing a matter that some say amounts to an accounting error tied to a years-old episode. But Roiphe, now a New York Law School professor of legal ethics, said she considers a falsification of business records charge to be an important tool that has been used frequently to hold Wall Street accountable. “I don’t think it’s a minor crime,” she said. “I don’t think it’s trivial.”

  • India takes up with Australia demonstrations by Khalistani elements in Brisbane

India takes up with Australia demonstrations by Khalistani elements in Brisbane

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India has taken up with Australia the demonstrations outside its honorary consulate in Brisbane by pro-Khalistani elements.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi suggested that the work at the consulate was very briefly halted following the demonstrations on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10 raised with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese the recent incidents of attacks on temples in Australia as well as pro-Khalistani activities in that country.

Next day, Albanese said he assured his Indian counterpart Modi that Australia will not tolerate attacks on religious places and anyone responsible for such activities will face the “full force of the law”.

“There is an honorary consulate there and not a Consulate General of India. I understand small number of protesters were there. For a little while there were some disruptions. But it is not closed,” Bagchi said at a media briefing.

“The Honorary Consulate continues to function normally providing necessary services. I would not like to comment on footages particularly video footages which are not been confirmed,” he said referring to some videos of the demonstration.

Bagchi said India has taken up the issue with the Australian authorities.

“We have taken it up with the government. You heard the prime minister taking it up with the Australian prime minister. And we have been taking up on a regular basis whenever such incidents occur. Unfortunately they have occurred a number of times,” Bagchi said.

“Our teams are in touch and that’s how we take this up quickly. I am not going to get into the composition or the level of the teams but they are in touch,” he said.

On the so-called referendum by the pro-Khalistani elements, Bagchi said India takes up with governments of countries from where reports of such activities emerge.

“As regards to the so called referendum, our views are very clear on this. I am not going to spell it again what we are going to tell them…we have flagged it to our counterparts not just in Australia but other parts as well wherever such efforts have been made,” he added.

  • Stalin takes veiled swipe at BJP over fake news on migrant workers

Stalin takes veiled swipe at BJP over fake news on migrant workers

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday took a veiled swipe at the BJP by saying that ‘some political forces’ utilise technology for spreading rumours and cause deterioration of law and order.

In his address, inaugurating the 50th edition of ‘Bridge (Building human capital for a trillion dollar digital economy)’ conference, an initiative of the ICT Academy Stalin said all steps are being taken by the State government to take Tamil Nadu to the numero uno spot in the country in Information Technology sector.

Technology has two sides to it and the objective for which it is used decides its usefulness. “The younger generation should use technology for their growth and must not become its slaves. Crimes, involving use of technology for duping people are more,” he said. “Some political forces utilise it for spreading rumours and spoil law and order,” he said without naming anyone.

Recently, fake information was spread in social media that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu leading to unrest among labour force belonging to States including Bihar. The government had to reach out to workers to calm them that the claims were false and cases were registered by police including one against a Hindi daily and a BJP spokesperson as well.

The CM further said, “obscene websites are also on the rise and human lives are becoming fatalities in online card game Rummy.” Hence, the youth should grow in thier lives by using technology in the right manner and work for the nation’s development.

The Raj Bhavan had on Wednesday returned a Bill banning online Rummy to the Tamil Nadu Assembly for reconsideration.

Stalin said Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in successfully implementing National e-Governance Plan and State government e-Governance initiatives.

Underscoring various government initiatives during 1996-2001, when late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister, including coming up with a IT policy in 1997, he said such pioneering initiatives is behind the achievements the State has made in the field.

His government, working on the social justice-led Dravidian model of governance is continuing such work.

Due to such efforts including e-office, people could soon avail ‘paperless, transparent services.’ Data is the new digital era fuel and TN government has unveiled its Data centre policy fulfilling the first objective of facilitating building of related infrastructure. To address ‘skills gap,’ the government has ensured appropriate learning modules for 50,000 IT/computer students.

The Information Technology sector should grow and it should be nurtured to see that in Tamil Nadu it is developed better than other States in the country.

According to the ICT Academy, the Bridge conference aims at bridging the industry academia gap.

“Bridge is a platform for all the stakeholders to discuss improving the industry-institute interaction primarily on the key issues that includes the role of technology, innovation, applied research, entrepreneurship, future virtual world, curriculum change, industry expectations, skill development etc.”

It is an opportunity for both industrialists and academicians to share their thoughts, ideas and ways for preparing academic campuses to “deliver high value industry relevant output.”

Ministers including T Mano Thangaraj (IT), J Jeyaranjan, Vice-chairman, State Planning Commission, top officials, technologists, Hari Balachandran, CEO of ICT Academy of TN participated.

  • Siddaramaiah takes dig at Modi for keeping mum on BJP MLA’s role in bribery case

Siddaramaiah takes dig at Modi for keeping mum on BJP MLA’s role in bribery case

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding alleged involvement of a BJP MLA in a corruption case filed by Lokayukta, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Sunday asked him whether he has changed his ‘Na khaunga, Na khane dunga’ slogan to ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’.

While the Hindi phrase ‘Na khaunga, na khane dunga’ translates to — would not take bribes, nor let anyone do so; ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’ means — you take bribe and give me its share.

The former Karnataka chief minister’s dig at Modi, through a series of tweets, came on a day when the Prime Minister was visiting Mandya and Dharwad districts of the state. Assembly elections are due in the state by May.

“Mr.@narendramodi, Why are you silent despite Lokayukta exposing rampant corruption done by MLA Virupaksha (Madal Virupakshappa) & his son? Do you also have share in that corrupt money?” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

“Will a corrupt and shameless MLA of @BJP4Karnataka be able to go on a display march without the support of the supreme leader of BJP like you?, Mr. @narendramodi .Are all @BJP4India leaders shameless?” he asked, in another tweet, adding “Did you, Mr @narendramodi, change your Na Khaunga, Na Khane dunga slogan to ‘Thum Khao, Muje bhi Khilao’?”

Virupakshappa is an accused in a bribery case where his son, a government officer, was caught by the state Lokayukta police while collecting money allegedly on behalf of the legislator.

Siddaramaiah, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, also asked the Prime Minister stating: “…Can we assume that till the share of the corrupt money reaches you, all these shameless corrupt leaders of @BJP4Karnataka will remain safe & roam scot free?”
