Will encourage students to take courses on Indian Knowledge System: UGC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: From Vedic concepts of astronomy to plastic surgery, Ayurveda to Yoga, higher education students will be encouraged to take courses on Indian Knowledge System as part of their academic curriculum, according to the University Grants Commission.

According to the draft guidelines, courses on Indian Knowledge System (IKS) will have to account for at least five per cent of the total mandated credits that a student is expected to earn to obtain an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

“The undergraduate curriculums are diverse and have varied subjects to be covered to meet the needs of the programmes. It is not possible to have a single prescription for all the various UG and PG programmes in the country,” the draft said.

    MS Education Academy

“The primary purpose of the guidelines is to help the institutions come up with courses that will introduce the students to all aspects of IKS which are related to their fields of study and to promote interest in knowing and exploring more. A 10-year horizon is envisioned for the application of these guidelines, along with a revision and modification after five years to meet the evolving needs,” it said.

According to the commission, IKS is a systematised disciplines of knowledge developed to a high degree of sophistication in India from ancient times and all of the traditions and practises that the various communities, including tribal, have evolved, refined and preserved over generations.

“Student enrolled in a UG or PG programme should be encouraged to take credit courses in IKS amounting in all to at least five per cent of the total mandated credits. And at least 50 per cent of the credits apportioned to the IKS should be related to the major discipline and should be accounted for the credits assigned to the major discipline,” the draft said.

The splendid geographical isolation of India and the uniqueness of Indian culture, Ramayana and Mahabharata, and their important regional versions; Puranas, foundational texts of Indian Philosophies, including the Jaina and Bauddha; foundational Texts of Indian religious sampradayas, from the Vedic period to the Bhakti traditions of different regions are among the courses prescribed under the IKS.

  • Hyderabad varsity develops 2D Terahertz imaging system for defence applications

Hyderabad varsity develops 2D Terahertz imaging system for defence applications

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A research team at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has designed and developed an indigenous Terahertz (THz) pulsed imaging system capable of detecting and identifying concealed metallic, explosives and drugs samples within a paper envelope.

THz imaging technique acts as a perfect tool for the detection of concealed (hidden) metallic objects like arms and ammunition which may be potential threats, thus making it a suitable tool for defence and homeland security applications.

THz radiation also known as T-ray lies between the microwave (electronics) and optical region of the electromagnetic spectrum which is extended between 100 GHz to 10 THz frequency or 3 mm to 30 micrometre wavelength range.

    MS Education Academy

The research team led by A.K. Chaudhary and P. Naveen Kumar (senior research scholar), ACRHEM, School of Physics, University of Hyderabad, achieved success in designing and developing an indigenous THz pulsed imaging systems between 0.1 to 2.0 THz range.

The system provides five numbers of real time images of the given object.

“We have used an optical fibre-coupled femtosecond laser, a voice coil-driven corner mirror with a position sensor and InGaAs/InAlAs photoconductive antennas for THz generation and detection,” Chaudhary said. The work has also been published in the March 2023 issue of In.J. of Physics.

THz radiation has the capability to interrogate a wide variety of materials such as semiconductors, gases, polymers, pharmaceutical drugs, chemical mixtures, biological and environment pollutants and helped in determining the optical properties of many dielectrics and non-metallic materials.

THz ray can penetrate through most of the non-metallic materials such as plastic, paper, wood, rubber and ceramics which are opaque in the visible and infrared region.

One of the major applications of THz spectroscopy and imaging is in non-invasive detection of materials composition and retrieval of complex surface topography of objects in the form of 2D/3D hyper spectral images.

THz-TDS imaging can be carried in transmission and reflection geometries. In transmission geometry, the temporal profile of the electric field transmitted through the investigated sample is measured and compared with a reference spectrum obtained from the free path.

However, many samples possess significantly high absorption properties in the THz range or are highly reflective situations that limit or completely impede the use of THz imaging in transmission geometry.

The project is funded by the DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Indian government, ACRHEM-Phase-3.

  • Same-sex marriages attack on family system, contravene all personal laws: Jamiat Ulama-i Hind

Same-sex marriages attack on family system, contravene all personal laws: Jamiat Ulama-i Hind

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Opposing petitions seeking validation of same-sex marriages, Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has moved the Supreme Court saying they are an attack on the family system and in complete contravention of all personal laws.

Seeking intervention in the batch of petitions pending before the top court, the organisation also cited the Hindu traditions, saying the aim of marriage among Hindus is not merely physical pleasure or procreation but spiritual advancement.

It is one of the sixteen ‘sanskars’ in Hindus, the Jamiat said. “This concept of same-sex marriage goes to attack the family system rather than making a family through this process,” Jamiat said.

    MS Education Academy

The top court on March 13 had referred the pleas seeking legal validation of same-sex marriages to a five-judge Constitution bench for adjudication, saying it is a “very seminal issue”.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said the submissions on the issue involve an interplay between constitutional rights on the one hand and special legislative enactments, including the Special Marriage Act, on the other.

In its petition, Jamiat said, “The nature of prayers in the present petition is in complete contravention of the established understanding of the concept of marriage in all personal laws between a biological man and a biological woman and thus intends to rake up the very core, i.e., the structure of a family unit prevailing in the personal laws system.”

“The concept of marriage between two opposite sexes is like a basic feature of the concept of marriage itself which leads to the creation of a bundle of rights (maintenance, inheritance, guardianship, custody).

“By these petitions, petitioners are seeking to dilute the concept of marriage, a stable institution, by introducing a free-floating system by introducing the concept of same-sex marriage,” the plea said.

The Jamiat said that in Muslims, marriage is a socio-religious institution between a biological man and a biological woman and any different interpretation given to the marriage shall lead to the persons claiming to be married under this category as non-adherents.

In a historic judgement on September 6, 2018, the Supreme Court decriminalised consensual gay sex between adults after years of activism.

In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the government has opposed the petitions and submitted that despite the decriminalisation of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, the petitioners cannot claim a fundamental right for same-sex marriage to be recognised under the laws of the country.

At the same time, it submitted that though the Centre limits its recognition to heterosexual relationships, there may be other forms of marriages or unions or personal understandings of relationships between individuals in a society and these “are not unlawful”.

It said western decisions sans any basis in Indian constitutional law jurisprudence cannot be imported in this context, while asserting that granting recognition to human relations is a legislative function and can never be a subject of judicial adjudication.

  • University of Hyderabad’s grading system is casteist, discriminatory: Study

University of Hyderabad’s grading system is casteist, discriminatory: Study

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) produced a seven-page study on the ‘discriminatory grading system’ in the institution’s PhD admissions.

The report, which has gone viral on social media states that there is a pattern in the grading of PhD applicants that mirrors the caste hierarchy.

“Ambedkar Students’ Association prepared and submitted a 7-page report on discriminatory marking of reserved category students in PhD interviews. The report establishes that there is a consistent pattern of discriminatory marking almost resembling the hierarchical caste order,” ASA HCU said in a tweet on Thursday.

“The report makes it abundantly clear that caste is alive and thriving in higher educational institutions. Structural discrimination and disadvantages are chipping away the gains of reservation from OBC, SC and ST students,” it added.

The ASA report states that despite having comparable admission exam scores, students from reserved categories are marked substantially lower than those from unreserved categories in interviews.

“We discovered a pattern of discriminatory marking in interviews in many departments across various schools in the university”, the report states.

The study provides PhD interview marks from the University of Hyderabad’s seven departments: computer science, plant science, biochemistry, physics, electronics, applied mathematics, and microbiology.

According to the report’s data, the average entrance exam score of the top five students in the computer science department for the Unreserved category is 41.4, and the interview mark is 24.6. Nevertheless, the average exam score among top OBC scorers is 40, and the average interview score is 17.2. The average admission exam score of the top five SC and ST students is 30.2 and 25.4, respectively, while the average interview score is 12 and 6.6.

According to the research, students’ grades have dropped in line with their caste privilege.

“The discriminatory marking in these departments almost resembles a structure of graded inequality where marks of students resemble their position in the caste hierarchy,” says ASA’s report.

The report also highlights eight severe cases of discriminatory grading, which include: Seven out of eight faculties giving a zero to an SC student who applied for a PhD in material engineering and an OBC candidate for a PhD in material engineering being given 2.4 marks in the PhD interview despite having a 40 entrance score.

Post making the report public, ASA’s list of demands include the formation of a committee to investigate the grading system, defining evaluation criteria, providing and recording individual grades from faculty members, holding Ph.D. admission seminars for students before admission begins, and ensuring that no student is rejected by the faculty by giving them zero points.

Faculty members in the past have marked students with zeroes and declared them unsuitable for admission, violating USC norms.

  • Tesla’s infotainment system can be hacked remotely by hackers: Report

Tesla’s infotainment system can be hacked remotely by hackers: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Malicious hackers can remotely turn off the lights, honk the horn, open the trunk, and activate the windshield wipers by hacking into the Tesla’s infotainment system, the media reported.

The researchers, who work for France-based security firm Synacktiv, discovered the three vulnerabilities that can be used to hack into Tesla.

The worst-case scenario enabled by these vulnerabilities, at least as far as the researchers are aware, is to annoy and potentially disrupt a driver, reports TechCrunch.

However, Tesla told the researchers that they couldn’t have turned on and off the car, or steered the wheel.

But, one of the researchers, Eloi Benoist-Vanderbeken, believes it might have been possible, said the report.

“Tesla mentioned we wouldn’t be able to turn the steering wheel, accelerate or brake. But from our understanding of the car architecture we are not sure that this is correct, but we don’t have proof of it,” Vanderbeken was quoted as saying.

The researchers didn’t have full access to a Tesla at that time, but they look forward to fact-checking the company’s statements once they do.

Moreover, the report mentioned that the first vulnerability was exploitable via Bluetooth, the second one allowed the researchers to elevate their privileges and become root (cybersecurity lingo for the highest level of system access — giving them free rein to execute code in the infotainment system), and the last one gave them control of the security gateway, a component that sends some commands to the car.

“It’s not at the point of a modern browser running on an iPhone or an Android, but it’s not that far from it. Tesla cars are really well connected to the internet, so they need to take care of security because they are likely to be targeted more than other cars,” Vincent Dehors, Cyber Security Engineer, Synacktiv, was quoted as saying.

Further, the researchers mentioned that Tesla is working on patches for these vulnerabilities, which should be pushed to cars soon, according to the report.

Last month, Tesla paused the rollout of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta software in the US and Canada until a firmware update can be issued to address a safety recall.

“Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on certain Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles that have installed or are pending installation of software that contains the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta feature,” Tesla wrote on the support page.

  • SC asks Centre, states to take steps to unclutter jails to clean criminal justice system

SC asks Centre, states to take steps to unclutter jails to clean criminal justice system

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court asked the Centre and the states on Tuesday to take effective steps to “unclutter” jails as it would eventually lead to the cleansing of the criminal justice system.

“Everybody talks about the cluttering of jails in the country and the people from socially weaker sections are languishing in jail. Some thought process we wanted from the government … by taking steps, you not only unclutter jails but you will unclutter the criminal justice system in the country,” a bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Aravind Kumar said.

The bench, which was hearing a 2021 suo motu (on its own) case on the “Policy Strategy for Grant of Bail”, made the observations after amicus curiae (friend of court) Gaurav Agrawal referred to the data on issues such as non-release of undertrial prisoners (UTPs) and convicts despite being granted bail, their premature release and the status of plea bargaining in the country.

On the issue of releasing UTPs under the plea-bargaining scheme, where an accused in certain offences accepts the guilt and is let off with a minor punishment, the bench expressed concern and said, “Keeping in mind the celebration of 75 years of independence, if these matters (of the accused) can be identified and released considering the pendency of the cases, it would be worth experimenting.”

The amicus curiae referred to a written note and said more than 5,000 accused and convicts were identified till December 31 last year, who were not released despite being granted bail.

He said, “5,362 such prisoners were identified till December 31, 2022 and 2,129 were released till March 13 this year. Around 600 people could not be released due to the pendency of multiple cases against them. In some cases, the modification of the orders has been sought. And about 2,000 cases are still pending.”

The bench also raised the issue of software and said there has to be a “better ability” on the part of jail authorities to put data in the public domain and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has to play a proactive role in training them.

“We understand that there is a system used in Gujarat, which is named ‘Email My Case Status’. We have requested the amicus to look into that aspect, if it can be successfully used for other states,” it said.

The amicus curiae also referred to the status of plea bargaining, compounding of offences and probation in various states.

He said in the last two months, 1,428 cases of plea bargaining were dealt with.

Earlier, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) had told the Supreme Court that according to recent data, about 5,000 UTPs were in jails despite being granted bail and 1,417 of them have now been released.

In a report filed in the apex court, the NALSA said it was in the process of creating a “master data” of all such UTPs who are unable to furnish surety or bail bonds due to poverty, including the reasons for their non-release from prison.

The top court had earlier flagged the issue of UTPs who continue to be in custody despite being granted bail on account of their inability to fulfil the conditions for the relief.

It had asked the states to issue directions to jail authorities to give the details of such UTPs to the NALSA, which will process it for making necessary suggestions on how to deal with the issue and provide legal assistance wherever necessary.

In the report, the NALSA had sought several directions from the apex court, including to the effect that a court that grants bail to an UTP or a convict would be required to send a copy of the order to the prisoner through the jail superintendent on the same day or the next day.

It had further sought a direction that the DLSA secretary, with a view to find out about the economic condition of an accused, may take the help of probation officers or paralegal volunteers to prepare a report on his socio-economic conditions, which may be placed before the court concerned with a request to relax the conditions of bail or surety.
