UN continue to deliver quake-related aid to Syria, Turkey

    [ad_1]

United Nations: The UN and its specialised agencies have continued delivering aid to Turkey and Syria following the devastating February 6 quakes that killed more than 53,300 people in the two countries, a spokesman said.

In Syria, at least 8.8 million people were affected by the earthquakes, which, among other factors, also have a significant impact on the response to a cholera outbreak, said Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“Our partners launched a cholera vaccination campaign in earthquake-hit areas of Northwest Syria on Tuesday,” Xinhua news agency quoted Haq as saying.

“They plan to distribute 1.7 million vaccine doses in high-risk areas. More than 53,000 suspected cholera cases and 23 associated deaths have been reported in Northwest Syria as of March 5.”

More than 100,000 people who had their water infrastructure damaged received water since the start of the response, he said.

Humanitarian workers have also provided hygiene kits to more than 100,000 people in reception centres.

“Our colleagues also tell us that 3.7 million children in earthquake-affected areas across Syria are facing the risk of contracting diseases and lack access to basic services,” Haq told a regular briefing.

He said the Syria earthquake flash appeal has received $218 million, or 55 per cent, of the nearly $400 million needed.

Turning to Turkey, the spokesman said the world body continues to support the government-led response to the massive earthquakes.

“The UN and our partners have provided more than 42,000 tents and hundreds of thousands of blankets, bedsheets and mattresses,” he said.

“More than 900,000 people have received food assistance and the World Food Programme has supplied more than 5.7 million food packages and hot meals.”

Haq said the World Health Organization provides healthcare to nearly 24,000 people.

The Unicef reached 319,000 people, including more than 183,000 children, with hygiene kits and non-food items, winter clothes and heaters, among other critical supplies.

However, Haq said the Turkey earthquake appeal of $1 billion is only 10.4 per cent funded.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo funds flight with care items for quake victims in Turkey, Syria

Cristiano Ronaldo funds flight with care items for quake victims in Turkey, Syria

    [ad_1]

In a humanitarian gesture, Portuguese and Saudi Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a plane of care items to the victims affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

Earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 Richter scale, killing more than 50,000 people, injuring tens of thousands, and displacing thousands more in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes.

The aid sent from the Portuguese star includes tents, medical facilities, pillows, blankets, beds, milk, baby food and food packages, according to a report by the British newspaper Daily Mail.

As per media reports, there is “hope that Ronaldo’s initiative will encourage other sports personalities to follow his example in the coming days and weeks.”

As per Marca, this donation is valued at 350,000 dollars (Rs 2,86,09,875).

This humanitarian stance is not the first on the part of Cristiano Ronaldo towards those affected in Turkey and Syria, as he was the first to participate in the campaign launched by the Turkish Merih Demiral, the current Atalanta defender, who teamed up with the “Don” in Juventus.

Demiral published a tweet on February 7, 2023, in which he wrote in Turkish, “I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and he told me that he was very sad about what happened in Turkey.”

The former Juventus defender added, “We will auction off the signed Ronaldo shirt in my collection, and all the proceeds will be used in the areas affected by the earthquake.”

Days later, on February 9, 2023, Demiral succeeded in selling Cristiano’s shirt, along with his former Juventus colleagues, Argentine Paulo Dybala and Italian Leonardo Bonci, for a large sum.

Demiral tweeted, “In the auction that we started, I found 3 shirts of their owners. The shirts of Ronaldo, Bonucci and Dybala, which were offered in the auction, were sold for a total amount of 5 million Turkish liras (about 266 thousand dollars).”

He added, “All proceeds from the sale will be used to help the people in the earthquake areas.”

Earlier, Ronaldo paid for a child’s brain surgery at a cost of 83,000 dollars (Rs 67,85,831) and donated 165,000 dollars (Rs 1,34,89,905) to help fund a cancer centre in his native Portugal.

Ronaldo also donated one million and 200,000 (Rs 1,63,51,400) dollars to Portuguese hospitals during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Syrian govt condemns US general’s ‘illegitimate’ visit to Syria

    [ad_1]

Damascus: The Syrian Foreign Ministry has condemned an “illegitimate” visit of a top US general to a US base in northeastern Syria.

In a statement, the Ministry on Sunday slammed the US Army general Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for making an unannounced visit to a base to meet US troops in northeastern Syria, Xinhua news agency reported.

The visit was a “flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity,” it said.

The Ministry also demanded the US government “immediately stop its systematic and continuous international law violations and its support for armed separatist militias”.

UN continues to deliver cross-border aid into Syria

United Nations: Twenty-two truckloads of aid from the World Food Programme and the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) crossed into Northwest Syria from Turkey, bringing the total of cross-border delivery to 557 trucks since February 9 in the wake of massive earthquakes, said a UN spokesman.

The UN has carried out 18 inter-agency cross-border missions to Northwest Syria since the first interagency visit to Idlib on February 14, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at a daily press briefing on Friday.

On Thursday, a joint delegation by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Unicef carried out a mission focussed on gender and accountability to affected people, including a field visit to a site for internally displaced persons in Kelly Mountain and to Al-Iman hospital in Sarmada, Idlib, he added.

“Our humanitarian colleagues also tell us that over 105,000 households have reportedly been displaced following the earthquakes. Many are staying with host communities or going back to their inhabitable homes, making it very difficult to estimate the total number of displaced,” said Haq as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

The world body is currently supporting structural damage assessments of affected buildings to help facilitate families’ return. Longer-term shelter operations are also being identified for families that cannot return to their homes due to the scope of the damage, he added.

The $400-million appeal in response to the February 6 earthquakes has so far received $173 million, or 43.5 per cent of the funding required, he said.

Landmine explosions kill 55 in Syria since beginning of 2023

    [ad_1]

Damascus: Landmine explosions in Syria have killed 55 people since the beginning of 2023, a war monitor reported.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll includes two women and 18 children killed by the explosions of landmines that were undiscovered in previously rebel-held areas or battle zones.

The death toll also includes five people who were killed on Thursday in the Salamiyeh area in the central province of Hama, it added.

As many as 118 people, including 28 children and four women, were wounded by the landmine explosions during the same period, said the UK-based watchdog group.

The country’s official news agency SANA reported that the five victims were truffle collectors and were looking for the pricey fungus when a landmine left by the Islamic State (IS) terrorists exploded, Xinhua news agency reported.

Many of the landmine victims were farmers or workers collecting truffles in the desert region, who have become a target for IS militants.

In February, IS killed 64 truffle collectors in the desert region of eastern Syria.

Top Arab lawmakers’ Syria visit ‘positive step’ toward greater solidarity: Iran

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran said on Tuesday that the visit of senior Arab lawmakers to quake-ravaged Syria is a step toward greater “solidarity” in the region.

Making the remarks in a tweet, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the visit of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) delegation on Sunday represented fresh “breakthroughs” in relations between Syria and other Arab countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

Headed by the Speaker of the Arab Parliament Adel Abdel-Rahman Al-Asoomi and Iraqi parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, the delegation’s Sunday visit was aimed at “expressing solidarity” with Syria following the deadly quakes that jolted the country on February 6, Kanaani noted.

These breakthroughs are also proof of greater “realism” in the region and in the Muslim world, he added.

If the regional countries can adopt “realistic and independent” national approaches and resist the demands of any hegemonic power, they will resolve their problems through dialogue and regional mechanisms, the spokesman said.

After the tragic earthquakes, Arab countries have sent many aid shipments to Syria amid signs of a wide-scale diplomatic detente.

The AIPU is a regional parliamentary organisation composed of parliamentary groups representing the Arab Parliament, the legislative body of the Arab League. Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after the war broke out in the country.

Damascus: A delegation of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union visited Damascus, underscoring the importance of bringing Syria back to the Arab fold.

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after the ongoing civil war broke out, reports Xinhua news agency.

The president of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi headed the high-ranking delegation to Damascus on Sunday.

The eight Arab lawmakers held a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad and then went to the Syrian Parliament to meet lawmakers.

Among the visitors was Egypt’s Parliament Speaker Hanafy Ali El-Gebali, the first top official from the African nation to visit Syria during the 11-year war.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, al-Halboosi said the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union determined to work on all levels to bring Syria back to the Arab fold to assume its role in the Arab, regional, and international arena.

“Syria is indispensable, and we, as the parliamentary union representing our people, are pushing our governments to achieve more rapprochements to reach our goal of serving these countries are their dignified people,” he said.

For his part, El-Gebali said he and the other lawmakers came to Syria to show solidarity with the Syrian people.

“We don’t wait for Syria to come to us, we come to Syria because it’s our country also,” the Egyptian said.

El-Gebali revealed that their visit to Syria wasn’t on the schedule of the recent Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union mini-summit in Baghdad.

He said that it is al-Halboosi’s idea, noting that the Iraqi lawmaker took care of the travel arrangements for the visit to Syria.

According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, President Assad stressed that the delegation’s visit to his country means a lot to the Syrian people as it indicates support for them.

He said the visit affirms that there are effective Arab institutions capable of taking the initiative in various circumstances and moving in the interest of the Arab people.

He also thanked Arab countries for the rapid response shown at the popular and official levels to help the Syrian people overcome the impacts of the earthquake.
