Hyderabad: The upgradation work of Secunderabad railway station which is being undertaken by South Central Railway as part of ‘Major Upgradation of Railway Stations’ by the Ministry of Railways is in fast progress.
The upgradation works continue in full swing with the temporary booking office likely to be completed this month. Works have commenced for 9.5 lakh litre capacity underground water tanks.
The major works with regard to the temporary booking office and RPF building are in fast progress and are being taken up in a phased manner, as per the proposed plan and schedule.
As part of the station upgradation works for Secunderabad Railway station, the construction work for temporary offices has been taken up after completing the soil investigation work and topographic survey.
The laying of foundations, erection of columns, and shelter works have been completed for the temporary booking office while the flooring, plumbing, electrical, and false ceiling works are in progress. The new temporary booking office is likely to be opened in May 2023.
Likewise, work related to the new upcoming RPF building has been proceeding at a brisk pace with works related to the construction of the foundation and columns having been completed, while slab and partition-related works are in fast progress.
Station building to be opened soon
A new station building is also likely to come on the south side of the existing station building.
To accommodate passengers coming in this direction underground parking facility is also being provided.
In this regard, excavation and foundation works for the basement on the south side of the station are currently in progress.
The station upgradation plan has a provision for holding 11 lakh litres capacity of water in underground tanks.
In this regard, works have already commenced with regard to 9.5 lakh litres of underground tanks. Excavation work along with the laying of PCC beds for underground tanks has been completed at platform 10 and the PRS building.
In the next stage, reinforcement bar binding works are in progress, simultaneously, the shifting of offices in the Northside building is in progress. As of now, 60 percent of the utilities shifting has been completed, while the balance of utilities shifting is in progress.
General manager of SCR, Arun Kumar Jain has stated that Secunderabad station, the major railway station in the twin cities area is being redeveloped to give an elegant look and provide world-class amenities.
The redeveloped station will cater to the steadily increasing footfall and will be able to meet the passenger demand for the next 40 years.
The upgradation work of the station is being taken up at the cost of nearly Rs 700 crores and every stage of the project is being monitored to ensure timely completion of this prestigious project.

Red Sea Port city Jeddah in Saudi Arabia has become a crucial point for foreigners in Sudan to escape and reach safe haven.
Minister of state for external affairs Muralidharan arrived here on Tuesday to oversee rescue Operation Kaveri at the control room in Jeddah. India has begun ‘Operation Kaveri’ – a rescue operation by the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force to rescue Indians stranded in the war hit African country. The control room was set up to facilitate evacuation and also ensured that necessary infrastructure was in place both in Sudan Port and Jeddah.
“I express my profound gratitude to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for making a part of Operation Kaveri to bring back stranded Indians safely from Sudan,” said Muraleedharan.
“Team is in full readiness on the ground,” Muraleedharan said in Jeddah.
The Minister will receive the first batch of Indians evacuated from Sudan port and who boarded INS Sumedha and are headed to Jeddah and expected to arrive in late evening of Tuesday, from here they would be flown to India.
The evacuees will be accommodated at Indian school in Jeddah.
There are 278 Indians on board this ship and there are close to 250 more who will be ferried to Jeddah,” according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Another ship, INS Teg also pressed into the rescue mission that reached Port Sudan with additional officials and essential relief supplies, according to officials.
Two Indian Air Force aircraft are parked in Jeddah to bring the Indians back to India. C130J aircraft has a capacity of 300 people.
Visakhapatnam: After the successful conduct of the Global Investors Summit, the Andhra Pradesh government is gearing up to host the second G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meeting here on March 28 and 29.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Visakhapatnam District Collector A Mallikarjuna said the theme of the second meeting will be ‘Financing cities of tomorrow – inclusive, resilient and sustainable’. The first G20 IWG meeting was held in Pune earlier in January.
The two-day meeting in the city will be a part of India’s yearlong G20 presidency which will culminate with the summit-level meeting in New Delhi later in September.
The District Collector said delegates from 40 countries will participate in the meeting along with central and state government officials. A pre-summit workshop will be held on March 23 and 24 in which secretaries from eight states will be in attendance.
The delegates will arrive in the city on March 27 and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will participate in proceedings on the first day of the meeting on March 28.
On March 29, a health retreat programme will be conducted, while delegates will go on a tour of the city on March 30. From March 8 to 26, the district administration will organise several programmes including beach cleaning from RK Beach to Bhimili art contests for ensuring maximum participation from the city’s residents.
Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Ch Srikanth said the police department is taking all necessary measures to ensure security arrangements are in place for the delegates from the airport to the venue. He said nearly 2,350 police personnel will be deployed in view of the event.
Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Commissioner P Raja Babu said the corporation will undertake beautification work with nearly Rs 100 crore allocated for the purpose, including repair of roads, laying new roads and installing lighting in the city.

That’s left North Carolina Democrats having to fight for the resources now flowing freely into places like Arizona and Georgia, now two of the most tightly divided battlegrounds in America (which did not turn blue in 2008). Cooper and others are making the case that North Carolina’s fortunes have national impact — the governor’s presence has made it a refuge for abortion access in the South, and it remains a key piece of any potential GOP president’s political math.
“Republicans know that they have to win North Carolina in order to win a presidential race — there’s no other path for them. There are other paths for a Democrat to become president and not win North Carolina,” said Cooper, who is now termed out of his governorship, in an interview with POLITICO.
Cooper argued that makes victories in places like Arizona and Pennsylvania in 2022 possible, as North Carolina soaks up resources that could go elsewhere. But Cooper said he’s still making the argument “to the president on down” that North Carolina should chart the top of their priority list in 2024.
Yet interviews with nearly a dozen North Carolina Democratic elected officials and strategists yielded a range of problems, including a weak in-state party infrastructure, a series of less-than-inspiring federal candidates and not enough investment from national Democratic groups. Unlike a number of other Sun Belt states, growth has not been driven by one major city but by a patchwork of regionalized metro areas, all with different media markets, and North Carolina’s urban and non-white populations have not grown at the same lightning speed as cities like Atlanta or Phoenix.
“I wouldn’t say it’s the next domino that will make it blue, on a presidential level, forever in the way we see in Virginia, Arizona and even Georgia, where the demographics and population changes are truly driving this,” said Corey Platt, a Democratic strategist who served as the Democratic Governors Association’s political director. “It’s a purple state that’s center-right on economics and a bit more center-left on social issues, and so it takes the right Democrat or the right Republican to win, and federally, we haven’t been able to thread that needle.”
Former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory said that wins in North Carolina often “comes down to who has more money, and the stats show it.”
“Both parties can be accused of misreading North Carolina, but I would be shocked if Democrats leave it uncontested,” McCrory said, who lost a Senate GOP primary bid in 2022. “North Carolina can swing back and forth.”
It all has big implications for 2024, as Cooper drives to make it a top priority for a Biden reelection and state Attorney General Josh Stein launches bid to succeed Cooper in what could be the most expensive gubernatorial race next cycle. A potential redrawn congressional map later this year could also pad the GOP’s slim edge in the battle for the House next year, now that the state Supreme Court leans conservative.
The size of North Carolina’s swings back and forth has shrunk, meanwhile, into a smaller and smaller pool of truly independent voters, making the days of backing President George W. Bush by 12 points — even with then-Sen. John Edwards on the Democratic ticket — and Democratic Gov. Mike Easley by 13 points in 2004 feel like ancient history. Mirroring national trends, North Carolina’s urban-rural divide reveals a stark partisan split — an intractable problem for Democrats, as the state boasts the second largest rural population, behind just Texas.
When Democrats fail to turn out their core base in urban corridors, Republicans’ rural edge becomes insurmountable. In 2022, Democrats struggled with just that, despite a history-making candidate on the ballot in Cheri Beasley, a former state Supreme Court justice who is a Black woman. Instead, Democrats saw significant dropoff with young voters, urban voters and Black voters.
Statewide, African American turnout dropped by 6 points compared to 2018, another midterm year when there wasn’t a major statewide race atop the ticket. Voters over 60 made up a far larger share of the electorate compared to millennials and Gen Z, while urban voters lagged behind the statewide turnout average, according to an analysis by Michael Bitzer, a political science professor at Catawba College.
That turnout drop off, some Democrats argue, came down to cash. Republican outside groups significantly outspent their Democratic counterparts, giving now-Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) about a $50 million spending edge over Beasley. Republicans, meanwhile, note that Beasley outraised Budd in candidate cash by $24 million, which should’ve helped close some of that gap, since candidates get better rates on TV ads than outside groups.
“It’s almost impossible to overcome a $53 million outside spending gap that depresses votes for the Democratic candidate,” Cooper said. “I do think resources play a huge role and will play a huge role in 2024.”
Senate Majority PAC, the flagship Democratic outside group, noted its $22 million investment in North Carolina in 2022, calling it “a perennial battleground state with traditionally close races where we know we can succeed — and we look forward to helping Democrats win there in the future,” Veronica Yoo, a spokesperson for the group, said in a statement.
Still others pointed to the party’s infrastructure, which is “still missing a critical, year-round organization that can mobilize and turnout voters,” said state Sen. Jay Chaudhuri, a Democrat who represents part of Wake County. “I think we have a really good foundation, but it’s cracking the code on the field and organizing side of things that will be key.”
But even as fewer voters split their ticket in North Carolina, Democratic Rep. Wiley Nickel still believes that what works in North Carolina is to reach into that middle.
“There’s a vast group of voters in the middle, and they don’t want people on the far right and they don’t want people on the far left,” said Nickel, who won an evenly divided congressional seat against former President Donald Trump-endorsed Republican Bo Hines. “Anyone who watched our race knows that we were running against extremism in both parties and on the issues that mattered to most folks in the middle.”
Running against extremism is already a clear theme of Stein’s campaign, who became the first Democrat to launch his bid for the open governorship earlier this month.
Within the first minute of his launch video, Stein’s campaign featured footage of a potential GOP opponent, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, and former President Donald Trump on stage together. It spliced together some of Robinson’s anti-abortion rights and anti-LGBTQ comments, including a voice over from Stein: “Some politicians spark division, ignite hate, and fan the flames of bigotry.”
Jim Blaine, a Republican strategist, said Stein’s opening salvo is proof “that they don’t think they can carry the day on the merits of their candidate alone, so they have to make it about the other guy,” he said.
“North Carolina is a competitive state, but it’s Republican-leaning, so you have to nominate a centrist, if you’re a Democrat, to win, and they don’t tend to nominate those candidates,” Blaine continued.

Bengaluru: The modalities for launching the Rath Yatra from four directions by the end of February and other issues were discussed in today’s meeting held here on Friday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.
CM Bommai was speaking to reporters after the in Bengaluru and said the meeting discussed the programs to be held this month and the next month, party organisation along with the session, completion of Jan Sankalp Yatra before February and preparation of the district and state level election manifesto and the visit of national leaders to the state.
“BJP National President JP Nadda is coming for the booth-level Vijay Sankalp Yatra to launch it. He will be launching the yatra in Tumkur. It was decided in the meeting to take the programs of state and union governments to every house, and district-level convention of various morchas,” he said.
“The high command will decide on the list of candidates. The poll preparations and Jan Sampark programs were discussed in the meeting. Now only a preliminary round discussion was held and the next course of action will be decided with former CM BS Yediyurappa,” CM Bommai said.
Reacting to KPCC President DK Shivakumar’s statement on BJP legislators joining the Congress party in Haveri, Bommai asked Shivakumar to focus on how many leaders will remain in his party.
“The Congress leader is making such statements out of frustration,” Bommai added.
