India needs oppn that is not afraid of ruling party; Mamata should be PM: Swamy

Kolkata: Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Subramanian Swamy said on Tuesday that the country needs a genuine opposition which is not afraid of the ruling party.

Describing West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee as someone who cannot be “blackmailed”, he said she should be the prime minister of India.

“I do think that the country needs a genuine opposition which cannot be blackmailed by people in power,” Swamy said while speaking at an interactive session organised by FLO, the women’s wing of FICCI, here.

“I know a lot of people today. They will not go beyond a point against the present government. Because they are afraid that ED will turn up or something else will turn up. That’s not good for Indian democracy,” the BJP leader said.

He also reiterated that India needs an opposition which is “not a friend” of the ruling party.

“You can find many people like that. Some do it boisterously and some do it quietly,” he said.

“Mamata Banerjee should be the prime minister of India. She is a gutsy woman. Look at how she fought the communists. I met her 10 days ago but nobody knows (that),” Swamy said, adding that he knows her since she was fighting the CPI(M).

Asked about what transpired between Banerjee and him in that meeting, he said it was on how 2024 would be and what would be the shape of the economy then.

Referring to the TMC supremo, Swamy said it is “impossible to blackmail” her.

Asked about his opinion on the most powerful woman in the country today, the former MP said, “There was a time Jayalalitha could have been; there was a time when I thought of Mayawati. In the present situation…Mamata Banerjee. She is the only woman leader who has the guts to stand up. She is not complicit. “

Referring to Hinduism, he said it is the longest-surviving religion in the world today. “With that, you have a broadminded attitude.”

Sonia, Rahul will go to jail in National Herald case: Subramanian Swamy

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Union minister and BJP veteran Subramanian Swamy claimed on Saturday that the Congress top brass, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, will go to jail in the National Herald case.

The case was brought by Swamy, who accused the Gandhis of misusing party funds to buy a firm that published the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.

Attending a conclave of law students here, the ace lawyer-turned-politician said, “Today, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are out on bail. I used to say so many things to Rahul Gandhi but no one sent me to jail.”

When asked if Nitish Kumar will be the prime ministerial candidate of the joint Opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Swami said: “Nitish Kumar is my good friend since the JP movement days, but he never said that he is a prime ministerial candidate. I will meet him today and will talk to him in this regard,” Swamy said.

When asked about India becoming the most populous country in the world and should there be a population control act, Swamy said that he does not believe in such an act, adding that population will be under control if economic growth takes place in the country.

“To reduce population growth, we have to increase economic growth 10 per cent per annum,” said Swamy.

When asked about slogans raised in Patna in favour of slain gangster Atiq Ahmad, Swamy said that India is a democratic country and anyone can say anything. However, those who are raising slogans in favour of Atiq Ahmad are only hurting themselves, he said.

  • Submit specific instances where CBI has not taken action against directors: SC to Swamy

Submit specific instances where CBI has not taken action against directors: SC to Swamy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to submit specific instances where the CBI has not proceeded against independent directors of banks, allegedly involved in banking scams, despite the availability of material.

The order was passed in a PIL filed by Swamy seeking a probe into the alleged role of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials in various banking scams.

A bench of justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath asked Swamy to file an affidavit in this regard within four weeks.

“Dr Subramanian Swamy, petitioner-in-person, seeks four weeks’ time to file an affidavit so as to point out specific instances wherein, though there was material against the independent Directors, the CBI has not proceeded against them. List this matter after six weeks,” the bench said.

The top court said if Swamy “prima facie” shows that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not acted against independent directors, it may examine the role of the agency.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said if the role of RBI officials is made out in the process of the probe, they will be added as accused and investigated.

He said Swamy has only made “broad propositions” and the plea lacked any particular instance.

In his plea, Swamy has alleged that the involvement of RBI officials in scams involving various entities such as Kingfisher, Bank of Maharashtra and Yes Bank had not been probed.

He contended that despite playing a key role in the allocation of funds to various projects, RBI nominees have not been touched by CBI inquiries from 2000 till today.

“Not a single RBI official has been brought to justice despite RBI retaining the power to monitor, regulate, supervise, audit and direct the functioning of all banking companies in India,” the plea submitted.

The plea also alleged that RBI officials had acted in demonstrable active connivance in direct violation of statutes, including the Reserve Bank of India Act, the Banking Regulation Act and the State Bank of India Act.

Telangana: Amshala Swamy, face of Nalgonda fluorosis passes away

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The face of the Nalgonda fluorosis crisis Amshala Swamy passed away at his residence at Shivannagudem of Marriguda Mandal in the district on Saturday morning.

Swamy, 37, fell from his battery-operated wheelchair while climbing the ramp of his double-bedroom house on Friday. He seems to be normal earlier but he vomited blood the next day and died a few hours later.

Swamy was a part of the long-drawn protest by the Jala Sadhana Samithi and became known across the country in 2002 after a photograph of him emerged lying on a table in front of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The agitators met to highlight the severity of the issue.

    Amshala Swamy

Swamy was also part of several delegations of fluorosis victims who met several chief ministers to submit representations for a solution to the issue.

Recently Swamy was in the news when the minister for municipal administration and urban development K T Rama Rao sanctioned funds for his two-bedroom house and a salon. Swamy had lunch with KTR during the latter’s visit to Munugode for the by-elections in November last year.

    KCR, KTR offer condolences

Upon hearing Swamy’s demise, the Telangana chief minister’s office remembered Amshala Swamy’s fight against the dreaded disease. It said that Swamy was an inspiration to provide fluorosis-free purified drinking water in the state through the Mission Bhagiratha scheme.

KTR also took to Twitter to offer his condolences.

“My Heartfelt condolences to the family of Sri Amshala Swamy Garu who passed away today. He was a fighter who championed the cause of Fluorosis victims & an inspiration to many. He will always remain close to my heart. May his soul rest in peace,” KTR tweeted.
