  • French broadcaster BFMTV suspends presenter amid disinformation scandal

French broadcaster BFMTV suspends presenter amid disinformation scandal

    [ad_1]

France’s most-watched news channel, the 24-hour BFMTV, has suspended one of its longest-serving presenters and launched an internal investigation into news packages linked to an Israeli disinformation unit calling itself “Team Jorge”.

Rachid M’Barki, an anchor at BFMTV since its launch in 2005, is on leave and at the centre of the inquiry into multiple stories broadcast on his show, Le journal de la nuit.

He was suspended last month, after a member of Team Jorge suggested to undercover reporters that the group was secretly behind a BFMTV news report about the Monaco yachting industry.

The report, broadcast last year, suggested sanctions imposed against Russian oligarchs were damaging the yachting industry in the Mediterranean principality.

When a reporter approached BFMTV to ask questions about the integrity of that package and several others broadcast by the channel, M’Barki was suspended.

The channels said in a statement that the packages did not go through the usual editorial validation procedures.

Team Jorge sells hacking and disinformation services to political and corporate clients who want to conduct covert influence-peddling campaigns. The team was exposed by the Guardian and an international consortium of reporters led by the French nonprofit Forbidden Stories.

    Quick Guide

    About this investigative series

    Show

The Guardian and Observer have partnered with an international consortium of reporters to investigate global disinformation. Our project, Disinfo black ops, is exposing how false information is deliberately spread by powerful states and private operatives who sell their covert services to political campaigns, companies and wealthy individuals. It also reveals how inconvenient truths can be erased from the internet by those who are rich enough to pay. The investigation is part of Story killers, a collaboration led by Forbidden Stories, a French nonprofit whose mission is to pursue the work of assassinated, threatened or jailed reporters.

The eight-month investigation was inspired by the work of Gauri Lankesh, a 55-year-old journalist who was shot dead outside her Bengaluru home in 2017. Hours before she was murdered, Lankesh had been putting the finishing touches on an article called In the Age of False News, which examined how so-called lie factories online were spreading disinformation in India. In the final line of the article, which was published after her death, Lankesh wrote: “I want to salute all those who expose fake news. I wish there were more of them.”

The Story killers consortium includes more than 100 journalists from 30 media outlets including Haaretz, Le Monde, Radio France, Der Spiegel, Paper Trail Media, Die Zeit, TheMarker and the OCCRP. Read more about this project.

The leader of the unit, Tal Hanan, a former Israeli special forces operative who uses the alias “Jorge”, was filmed boasting about his ability to manipulate the media to spread propaganda, by undercover reporters posing as potential clients.

In one secretly filmed meeting, Hanan told the reporters he was able to have stories broadcast in France and then played a video clip.

One of the undercover reporters – Frédéric Métézeau, a Middle East correspondent at Radio France – recognised the clip as a report by M’Barki broadcast on BFMTV and approached the channel about the integrity of the package last month.

Alarm about the broadcasts escalated rapidly, leading to an internal investigation, and on 11 January M’Barki was taken off air and put on leave.

It is not clear whether Team Jorge was behind the BFMTV news package and, if so, how they planted the stories and on behalf of whom. The news website Politico, which first reported on the internal investigation at BFMTV, said a dozen suspicious broadcast packages were now under investigation.

BFMTV confirmed the investigation in a statement on 2 February, saying: “An internal investigation has been ongoing at BFMTV for two weeks after the discovery of content broadcast on our programme, Le journal de la nuit, outside the usual validation channels. The journalist in charge of Journal de la nuit has been suspended since the opening of this investigation.”

Marc-Olivier Fogiel, the chief executive of BFMTV, told the Forbidden Stories consortium: “At this stage, we remain cautious. But the fact remains that we are victims.”

In a statement, BFMTV’s society of journalists (SDJ), which seeks to defend the integrity of reporting, said it had “become aware of suspicions of interference concerning a journalist from our channel”. The statement said if the details reported were correct, “they are serious and reprehensible”, and the SDJ added that it hoped the internal investigation would get to the bottom of how the packages came to be broadcast.

In a comment to Politico, M’Barki denied any intentional misconduct. He said: “They were all real and verified. I do my job … I’m not ruling anything out, maybe I was tricked, I didn’t feel like I was or that I was participating in an operation of I don’t know what or I wouldn’t have done it.”

Tal Hanan, the head of Team Jorge, did not respond to detailed questions about the unit’s activities and methods but said: “I deny any wrongdoing.”

  • Barcelona mayor suspends ties with Israel, including twinning agreement over Palestinian rights

Barcelona mayor suspends ties with Israel, including twinning agreement over Palestinian rights

    [ad_1]

The Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, has suspended institutional relations with Israel, including the twinning agreement between the city and Tel Aviv, local media reported.

Ada Colau, the left-wing mayor, said in a press conference on Wednesday the decision was a response to its crime of apartheid and its repeated violation of human rights against the Palestinians.

“More than 100 organizations and more than 4,000 citizens have called for the defense of the human rights of Palestinians, and for this reason, in my capacity as mayor, I informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a letter that I suspend the institutional relationship between Barcelona and Tel Aviv,” the mayor said.

Ada Colau further added, “I have decided to temporarily suspend relations with the State of Israel and with the official institutions of this state, especially the twinning agreements with the Tel Aviv municipality, until the Israeli authorities end the systematic violation of Palestinian human rights.”

As per the media reports, activists from left-wing parties and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement succeeded in collecting the signatures of 5,000 citizens of Barcelona on a petition calling for the abolition of relations between Barcelona and Tel Aviv.

    Twinning agreement

A twinning agreement was signed between the municipalities of Barcelona and Tel Aviv in 1998.

The Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, pointed to the importance of this agreement in “strengthening joint cooperation between the two cities in various fields that concern civil residential communities, primarily tourism and the economy.”

Barcelona is considered an important tourist destination for Israelis, in light of Barcelona annually hosting the World Conference on Communications and Smart Cities, which provides a platform for Israeli companies in this field to showcase their innovations.

  • WFI general body meet in Ayodhya cancelled as govt suspends body’s activities

WFI general body meet in Ayodhya cancelled as govt suspends body’s activities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The general body meeting of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), scheduled to take place in Ayodhya on Sunday, has been cancelled after the Sports ministry suspended all the ongoing activities of the federation and appointed an Oversight Committee to take over the day-to day functioning.

The committee will probe the allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The WFI chief will step aside until the probe is completed.

“The Ministry of Sports has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day-to-day functioning of WFI,” the ministry said in a statement.

“In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP. The Ministry has directed WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event,” the statement read.

Notably, the protesting grapplers called off their protest after a meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and getting an assurance of a detailed probe into the allegations.

Top Indian wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and other grapplers on January 18 staged a protest against the WFI. The 28-year-old Phogat alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan had been harassing female wrestlers.

  • Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Saturday suspended Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, a fallout of the grapplers’ allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the sports body’s chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

It has decided to suspend Tomar, “with immediate effect, to ensure proper functioning of WFI”.

The ministry said it has also directed the WFI to suspend “all ongoing activities with immediate effect”, including the Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP, Sharan’s stronghold.

This comes a day after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the charges levelled by some of the country’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya, against Sharan and his body.

Regarding Tomar, the ministry said in a letter, which is in possession of the PTI, that his presence will be “detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline”.

“The Ministry has taken note of the reports about the functioning of the WFI, including the role of Shri Vinod Tomar and, has the reasons to believe that his continued presence will be detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline,” the ministry said in the letter.

The aggrieved wrestlers had alleged that Tomar took bribes from athletes and was involved in financial corruption, helping him to build property worth crores.

According to sources, the ministry will announce the names of its oversight committee members on Sunday.

In a press release, the ministry said it “has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day to day functioning of WFI”.

It added, “In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP.”

In this regard, the ministry has also asked the WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event.

The oversight committee of the ministry will have the powers to take all decisions on matters concerning Indian wrestling while also overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the federation.

Earlier in the day, the WFI had rejected all the allegations, including that of sexual harassment against its president, and claimed that the wrestlers’ protest was motivated by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”.

The WFI denied all the charges in its response to the government’s notice and asserted that “there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement ” in the federation.

The ministry had sought an explanation from WFI after the country’s top wrestlers sat on a dharna and alleged that the federation chief sexually harassed women wrestlers and acts like a “dictator”.

Before the wrestlers agreed to end their protest, the Indian Olympic Association had on Friday formed a seven-member committee of its own, headed by M C Mary Kom, to investigate the charges against Sharan.

The IOA panel was constituted even as the wrestlers’ sit-in protest entered the third day.

Besides legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

The IOA committee also has two advocates — Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra — besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.

The decision was taken during the IOA’s emergency Executive Council meeting, which was attended by the likes of Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra, Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar, along with IOA president PT Usha and joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey.

  • Twitter Suspends $8 Subscription Based Verification After Fake Accounts Created Mess

Twitter Suspends $8 Subscription Based Verification After Fake Accounts Created Mess

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk’s Twitter suspended the subscription-based blue tick verification badges on Friday, only days after introducing them as part of a slew of changes. The social media site planned to charge $8 to users who wanted the premium blue tick verification badge, but as soon as the service went live, several fake “verified” accounts appeared on Twitter, causing the platform to reconsider its decision.

Previously, blue tick verification was provided to notable figures in various fields such as entertainment, politics, journalism, and so on to avoid impersonation, but after Tesla co-founder Elon Musk took over the social media giant in a $44 billion takeover deal, the company decided to change the verification policy and decided to provide blue tick to anyone willing to pay $8 for the service.

Following the launch of the service, numerous fake accounts, including Elon Musk’s own Tesla and SpaceX, appeared with a blue tick. An impersonator account even claimed that ‘insulin is free,’ prompting pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly & Co. to issue an apology via Twitter.

There are currently two types of verified accounts on Twitter: one that was verified before to Musk’s takeover and states, “This account is verified because it is notable in government, news, entertainment, or another specified category.” The other verified account belongs to a person who paid $8 for Twitter Blue service.

The payment for the blue tick badge was necessary because analysts believe Musk overpaid for the $44 billion contract, which he is now realising. He has sold billions of dollars in shares from his other firm, Tesla, and has also raised funds from the markets. Several sponsors have paused their Twitter commercials as they learn about the new leadership’s policies, and the current mess of fake accounts has made them even more sceptical.

Elon Musk has recently cautioned Twitter employees to brace long hours as the firm approaches bankruptcy. The warning came as the US regulator announced the departure of the company’s trust and safety chief, as well as other top officials.

Musk cautioned in his first company-wide email that Twitter will not “survive the upcoming economic slump” if it does not increase subscription revenue to balance dwindling advertising revenue, according to three people who saw the message, reports Reuters.
