Kejriwal extends support to Kapil Sibal’s new platform ‘Insaaf’

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday appealed to people, including lawyers, to join Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal’s newly launched platform ‘Insaaf’ to fight injustice.
It’s a very good initiative, he said.
Sibal, an eminent lawyer and an independent Rajya Sabha member, announced on Saturday that he was launching a new platform called ‘Insaaf’ to fight “injustice” prevailing in the country, and sought the support of chief ministers and other Opposition leaders.
“This is a very important initiative of Kapil Sibal sahib. I appeal to everyone to join this and we will fight injustice together,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.
Later, speaking to reporters, the Delhi chief minister said Sibal is a well-known lawyer who is very active when it comes to social and political issues.
With his initiative, Sibal wants to connect people from various sections of the society, especially lawyers from across the country, he said.
It’s a very good initiative by Sibal, the AAP national convener added.
“I appeal to the lawyers and people of the country to join this initiative and make every possible effort to help aggrieved persons get justice, wherever there is injustice with anybody, Kejriwal said.

The Delhi BJP, however, reminded Kejriwal that when he was part of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement, its members had staged a protest outside Sibal’s residence and called him a “thief”.
“During the IAC movement, a demonstration was organised outside Kapil Sibal’s house and he was called a thief, and today sahib,” Delhi BJP spokesperson Khemchand Sharma said in a tweet in response to Kejriwal’s post.
“Now neither the contractor of thieves nor the sahib of thieves will be able to save the corrupt,” the BJP leader said in Hindi.
Announcing his new platform on Saturday, Sibal alleged a government working against the citizens is at the helm.
He said he would hold a public meeting of the new platform at Jantar Mantar on March 11 and put forward a new vision of India there. He said it was an open invitation to everyone, including opposition leaders and common people, to join him at the event.
Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray also came out in support of his ‘Insaaf’ platform.
“Everyone who wants democracy to survive and thrive should stand firmly with Kapil Sibal in his new initiative,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed solidarity with Sibal’s “ideas” and said lawyers along with the people of India must unite to “save” the unity and integrity of the country.
“We are in solidarity with your ideas, Kapil Sibal ji. I agree lawyers have an important role and along with citizens of India they must unite to save the unity and integrity of this great country,” the RJD leader said in a tweet on Saturday.

Biden poised for first veto after Dems support rollback

The fact that Republicans are poised to push the measure through a divided Congress underscores the growing political momentum behind their crusade against what they deride as “woke” business practices. Conservative officials at the state and federal level are increasingly attacking big corporations for embracing social and environmental causes. It’s a push that Democrats in red states and swing districts are finding they’re unable to ignore.
The Biden administration said in its veto threat this week that the rollback move would “unnecessarily limit the options available to retirement plan participants and investors.”
The president’s threat in a way gives moderate Democrats a free pass to distance themselves from the president because they don’t face the risk of the rollback actually being implemented.
Asked whether Democratic leadership had pressured him to vote “no,” Tester told reporters that they gave a presentation to the broader caucus Tuesday. But “it wasn’t like, pestering.”
The 2024 election “hasn’t been my focus, but that ought to be their focus,” Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), who sponsored the measure, told reporters. “I just tried to make the merits of the case out there understandable to everyone listening.”
Manchin took to the Senate floor to blast the Biden DOL rule as “just another example of how our administration prioritizes a liberal policy agenda over protecting and growing the retirement accounts of 150 million Americans.”
Republicans are taking advantage of procedures under the Congressional Review Act that allow lawmakers to nullify recently issued rules with simple majority votes, avoiding the Senate filibuster.

The Labor Department rule at issue doesn’t require investment managers to focus on environmental, social and governance factors in retirement accounts, but instead clarifies that they’re free to do so.
ESG investing has been a big focus for money managers for years, partly in response to consumer demand for sustainable investment products.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a Wall Street Journal op-ed blasted the GOP rollback effort, accusing Republicans of sacrificing their free market ideals in favor of “forcing their own views down the throats of every company and investor.”
“The whole anti-ESG operation is a fake, cooked up by the fossil fuel industry,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said in an interview.

J&K Govt clears decks for USD 100 million support by IFAD through implementation of “Competitiveness Improvement of Agric

Jammu, Feb 28 (GNS): Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha gave a green signal to pose JKCIP to the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) for financing through IFAD for project implementation in J&K.
The project shall contribute towards sustained increase in incomes of rural households by improving pre-production, production and post production verticals of agriculture. The project objective is to improve the competitiveness of the famers through a value chain approach with emphasis on export of high value agricultural commodities and development of business incubation centers and start-up support.
Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (JKCIP) comprises of 4 components which inter alia included value chain support with export focus, incubation and start-up support, support to vulnerable communities and project management. The project implementation would spread over 7 years (2023-2030) across all districts of J&K.
“The project will have a number of positive outcomes which will further complement the growth of agriculture & allied sectors in J&K, including export promotion of potential agricultural commodities and GGAP practices that would encourage export promotion like GI tagging, promotion of niche crops, certifications, quality control, laboratory/logistic support, branding facilities, marketing platforms and development of an organized value chain”, said Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Agriculture Production Department. “The project will also support activities focusing on tribal and other vulnerable communities which inhabit some of the most vulnerable landscapes such as hillsides, rangelands, semi-arid and arid lands and rely on climate-sensitive natural resources to make a living. IFAD shall promote environmentally sustainable and climate resilient agricultural practices for them”, he added.
Implementation of JKCIP is a part of the government’s larger efforts to look beyond the objectives of Holistic Agricultural Development Plan (HADP) to capture the opportunities in global trade by tapping the competitive advantage of J&K viz agro-climatic diversity, monopoly in production of default organic crops (Walnut, almond, cherries), year-round vegetable production, niche crop advantage & pristine climate which catalyzes the opportunity to export high value agricultural commodities. Besides provisions of HADP, concerted measures shall be implemented through JKCIP to create an enabling environment to reform agricultural sectors and better price realization. APD in collaboration with the Apex Committee under the chairmanship of Dr Mangla Rai has prepared an export promotion plan which is scheduled for ratification with the Apex Committee during 1-3 March, 2023 at SKUAST-Jammu. The plan after ratification shall construe an integral part of the IFAD project.
The project shall also encourage complementarily and convergence with the Holistic Agriculture Development Plan through identification of common activities for financing with focus on augmentation of livelihood of tribal and other vulnerable communities. Another major goal of the IFAD project is to establish incubation centers to undertake skilling of more than 2.5 lac entrepreneurs targeted under HADP projects, besides giving adequate focus on extension of support for training of trainers, demonstration set ups, entrepreneurship development and facilitating partnership with research institutions like ICAR, NFDB, NDDB. It shall also enable & foster establishment of agri start-ups.
The project includes a range of interventions to support commercialization & sustainability of agriculture through promotion of 300 new agri-tech start-ups, establishment of 60 vegetable, 117 Aromatic/Red rice, Guchi, Kashmiri Chilli, saffron and medicinal plant production clusters besides establishment of 20 vegetable seed, 20 potato seed and 40 oil and pulse seed clusters.
The project aims to create 6 mini-Centers of Excellences with 24 satellite centers for niche agri products and 4 mini-Centers of Excellences for fruit and nut crops besides establishment of 3 Export Hubs and 2 Business incubation centers. Additionally, it aims to establish 60,000 integrated farming models for fringe and nomadic communities and establishment of 200 horticultural nurseries. The project would also undertake GI tagging, aggregation, processing and marketing of at least 6 agriculture and minor forest produce.(GNS)

Congress divided over support to Sisodia

New Delhi: Differences have cropped up between Delhi unit of Congress and the central party over extending support to deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, arrested in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped liquor policy for 2021-22.
While the Delhi unit of the party welcomed the CBI action, veteran leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday night flayed it and termed all the probe agencies “harassment tools” of the BJP-led Central government, thus bringing forth the underlying difference.
Apparently, Delhi Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has sought time from the Lieutenant Governor to attack the AAP over the issue.
According to sources, the state leaders are upset over being snubbed publically by Ramesh with some privately alleging that he has a soft corner for AAP.
In an oblique reference to the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the CBI in connection with the excise policy scam, the Congress on Monday termed the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Income Tax Department “harassment tools” of the BJP-led Central government.
“@INCIndia has always held the belief that institutions like the ED, CBI and Income Tax Department have become instruments of political vendetta and harassment under ‘Modi Sarkar’. These institutions have lost all professionalism. Opposition leaders are selectively targeted to destroy their reputation,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, without mentioning anything about the arrest of the deputy of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Telangana: Medico’s suicide shows KCR’s support to one community, says Bandi

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Sunday remarked that in the case of the Warangal Medico Preethi’s suicide, it is clearly visible that chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is in support of ‘one community’.
Sanjay was indirectly referring to the dead victim’s senior MA Saif, who belongs to the Muslim community and is the main accused in the case. Sanjay in the past had also referred to the case as a clear case of ‘love jihad’.
“Dr Preethi’s death is quite sad. I pray to God that her soul finds peace and her family members find strength. I feel so sad of the fact that she had high potential. This is definitely a murder. Lack of response from the government inspite of a complaint is the reason for this gruesome incident,” he tweeted.

Sanjay also questioned the chief minister on his lack of response to the incident.
“Is it because the student is a tribal? Will you Rs 10 lakh ex gratia change anything for the parents? This proves that under KCR’s rule, criminals, if they have the support of the BRS and AIMIM, can resort to any act,” he further remarked.
Sanjay also demanded for an investigation by a sitting judge into the case. “KCR is in support of a community and this incident clearly shows that. We will fight until the culprits find punishment. Girls like Preethi should not go through this again and it is everybody’s responsibility,” he said.

The government of Telangana has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation while a state minister has promised another Rs 20 lakhs to the family of a post-graduate student who allegedly committed suicide due to harrasment by her senior.
Dharavathi Preethi, studying at the Kakatiya Medical College in Telangana’s Warangal town, succumbed at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad on Sunday night, five days after she allegedly took a lethal injection.

Tension prevailed at the NIMS as the victim’s family refused to allow the body to be shifted to the Gandhi Hospital for autopsy till the government explained the cause of death and suspend the department head and the principal.
The family relented after the government gave them some assurances.
The victim’s father D. Narendra told reporters that while the government announced a Rs 10 lakh compensation, the state Minister for Panchayat Raj E. Dayakar Rao promised Rs 20 lakhs.
Narendra said the Minister also assured them that a government job in the Panchayat Raj Department will be given to a member of the family.
Dayakar Rao also reportedly assured the family that the case will be investigated by a sitting judge.
Leaders of some opposition parties and students’ groups tried to stop the ambulance carrying the body to Gandhi Hospital.
They wanted to take the body to Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of the Chief Minister.
Police arrested the protesters.
The body was later shifted to Gandhi Hospital and after autopsy handed over to the family.
Preethi’s body was later taken to her native village in Jangaon district, where the last rites will be performed on Monday.
Warangal police on February 24 arrested Preethi’s senior M. A. Saif, a second year student in the department of anaesthesia.
Police said the targeted harassment of Preethi by her senior which could have driven her to attempt suicide.
Saif was booked for abetment to suicide as well as under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Anti-Ragging Act.
Warangal Police Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said that insulting behavior also comes under ragging.
According to the police, Saif was making insulting comments about her in a WhatsApp group.

Owaisi claims Uddhav, Pawar didn’t support Muslims in their time of need

Thane: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaddudin Owaisi has asked the Muslim youth to become a strong force in the country to fight for their rights and targeted leaders like Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, claiming they did not support the community members in their time of need.
Owaisi was addressing a rally in Mumbra area of Maharashtra’s Thane district on Saturday during his party’s national convention.
“If Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis can become leaders, why can’t you?” he asked the Muslim community youth.
The AIMIM was formed 65 years back and just a handful of people used to attend its meetings, but the number has now gone up to thousands, he said.
“We also have the presence in Parliament, state Assemblies and local bodies and this growth should continue unabated and the youth should try to get into the administration as well through election,” he said.
He asked the youth to come forward, make the AIMIM strong and fight for the rights of Muslims and Dalits.
Owaisi targeted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackerary and sought to know why he kept silent when “our community members faced harassment”.
He further said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar wants to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and wants support from the AIMIM.

“But he forgets that when it comes to supporting Muslims at the time of their crisis, he never bothered to come forward and left us to our fate. What kind of secularism is this?” he asked.
He also hit out at the Congress, saying its leaders had time for the Bharat Jodo Yatra and other activities, but did not turn up to console the families of those killed in mob lynching and other incidents.
Owaisi said his party will put up “sher” (strong) candidates against those who claim to be holding on to their bastions.
“You cannot purchase everyone with money power, we still have some people who are loyal to us and with them we will defeat you,” he said without naming anyone.
The AIMIM leader said he cannot be bought with money power.

Austin warns that China providing support to Russia would be ‘ill-advised’

Austin said Friday while the Pentagon hasn’t yet seen China provide any military assistance to Russia, Beijing “hasn’t taken that off the table for sure.” The Defense secretary said he engaged his counterpart, Chinese Minister of National Defense Wei Fenghe, “early on” to tell him “this would be a very bad mistake if China were to do this” and that it would “further complicate things.”
“China has a lot of capability in terms of munitions and weapons,” Austin said. “And if they provide the substantial support to Russia, it prolongs the conflict.”
The Pentagon chief also divulged in the interview that he is not currently in contact with his Chinese counterpart, who did not take a call from Austin when the U.S shot down a Chinese spy balloon in early February. The last time the two spoke was “a couple of months ago,” Austin said.
“I think it’s really, really important to make sure that we maintain lines of communication open. I think leaders need to be able to talk to each other to avoid misperceptions and manage crises,” Austin said. “And so this is really important. And so we hope that Minister Wei will have a change of heart and schedule that call.”
