  • Rihanna explains decision to reverse Super Bowl boycott

Rihanna explains decision to reverse Super Bowl boycott

    [ad_1]

Rihanna has explained her decision to perform at this year’s Super Bowl half-time show in Glendale, Arizona, after initially turning down the opportunity in 2019.

Speaking to British Vogue, the 34-year-old performer said that while “there’s a lot of mending to be done”, she felt it was “powerful to break down those doors and have representation at such a high, high level.”

“Two Super Bowls back-to-back, you know, representing the urban community, globally. It is powerful. It sends a really strong message,” she said, referring to the 2022 half-time show featuring Dr Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J Blige, Snoop Dogg and Eminem. The recent birth of her son was also a factor: “Raising a young Black man is one of the scariest responsibilities in life. You’re like, ‘What am I leaving my kids to? This is the planet they’re gonna be living on?’ All of those things really start to hit differently.”

The announcement of Rihanna’s performance in September 2022 had been met with surprise from fans. She had previously declined the opportunity in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, who alleged that he had been blackballed by the NFL due to his protests against racial injustice.

Unpacking her decision to stand in solidarity with Kaepernick in 2019, Rihanna explained that she “couldn’t be a sellout,” saying: “I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organisation that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Rihanna discussed her plans for new music, saying that she’d like to release a new album this year – her six-years-in-the-making follow-up to 2017’s Anti. “I have my ideas in my head, but I can’t say them out loud yet,” she said. “It’d be ridiculous if it’s not this year. But I just want to have fun. I just want to make music and make videos.”

Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance was widely praised, with the Guardian’s Adrian Horton describing the show as “a reminder of just how many immediately recognisable, still banging songs Rihanna delivered between the years 2007 and 2016.” Morwenna Ferrier, writing on the musician’s surprise pregnancy reveal, said that Rihanna was “past making a fashion statement. She took ownership of her body, and she did it in real time.”

  • Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

    [ad_1]

Twitter chief executive Elon Musk rallied a team of roughly 80 engineers to reconfigure the platform’s algorithm so his tweets would be more widely viewed, tech news site Platformer has reported.

A disgruntled Musk called for an emergency effort after a tweet he sent during Sunday’s Super Bowl game failed to achieve as much engagement as a tweet from Joe Biden, interviews and internal documents reviewed by Platformer have revealed.

The effort was sparked when a tweet from the president, who has 37m followers, generated nearly 29m impressions while a similar tweet from Musk – who has 128m followers – generated little more than 9.1m impressions.

A Twitter employee and cousin of Elon Musk, James Musk, posted urgently in the company Slack at 2.30am the following Monday morning, asking all employees who can code to participate. “Any people who can make dashboards and write software please can you help solve this problem,” he wrote. “This is high urgency.”

Engineers then deployed a new algorithm that artificially inflated Musk’s tweets by a factor of 1,000, ensuring that more than 90% of Musk’s 128.9m followers see them. Many who do not follow Musk are also being served his tweets in their feed through the “For you” tab of the app’s home page, which curates tweets from a number of accounts, including those a user is not following.

Musk seemed to publicly confirm the move, in his own way, posting a meme about forcing followers to read his tweets. He also told followers to “stay tuned” while Twitter makes adjustments to the algorithm.

The decision to devote internal resources to promoting his own tweets comes amid ongoing reports about Musk’s obsession with his own impressions on the platform. Last week, a report from Platformer also revealed Musk had fired a principal engineer at Twitter who told him views on his tweets had decreased organically, with interest in the erratic CEO waning. Users have complained since Twitter made its “For you” page the default feed on the platform in January that Musk’s tweets were appearing more frequently.

Musk, who purchased Twitter in October 2022 for $44bn, has made a number of additional changes to the platform in the intervening months, allowing the return of previously banned accounts like that of Donald Trump, changing the process for Twitter verification, and revoking free access to the platform’s API, or application programming interface.

Amid ongoing criticisms of his decisions as chief executive, Musk has promised to step down and find a replacement as soon as later this year. Current employees have described a harrowing environment at the company, which laid off nearly half its workforce in November 2022. At the time, Musk defended the cuts and other cost-cutting measures, stating the company was losing $4m per day.

  • Donald Trump calls Rihanna ‘nothing’ ahead of Super Bowl

Donald Trump calls Rihanna ‘nothing’ ahead of Super Bowl

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has attacked Grammy-winner Rihanna, calling her “nothing” and claimed that she has “no talent.”

The 76-year-old got riled up after Texas congressman Ronny Jackson called on the NFL to remove the Barbadian songstress from the halftime show after “badmouthing America.” In his post on Truth Social account, he also pointed out that Rihanna is anti-Trump, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“Rihanna spray painted ‘F*** Donald Trump’ on a car at the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. She’s made a career of spewing degenerate filth while badmouthing America every chance she gets,” Jackson, who is Trump’s former White House doctor, wrote on Friday.

“Why is the NFL showcasing this crap? Rihanna SHOULD NOT be the halftime performer!”

Responding to Ronny’s remarks, Trump wrote: “Without her ‘Stylist’ she’d be NOTHING.” He added: “Bad everything, and NO TALENT!”

Trump didn’t seem to hate Rihanna that much before as his team used her song ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ for a campaign rally during the mid-terms. She, however, sent a cease and desist to prevent them from using her music in the future. She added that she wouldn’t be seen at one of the “tragic rallies.”

Rihanna has been a vocal critic of the 45th POTUS. She criticised his stance on immigration, sharing a photo of herself holding a T-shirt that read “Immigrants” around the time he ordered the delay of ICE deportations.

“Wherever I go, except for Barbados, I’m an immigrant,” she explained why it’s a topic she holds close to her heart.

“But I think it’s important for people to remember, if you love me, everyone out here is just like me. A million Rihannas out there, getting treated like dirt.”

  • Biden’s Super Bowl interview appears off — for good

Biden’s Super Bowl interview appears off — for good

    [ad_1]

    super bowl eagles football 83689

But brinkmanship between the president’s team and the media giant stretched for days and then hours heading into the weekend of the big game. It started Friday morning when the White House announced that an interview with Fox Soul — which came as a surprise to many — had been scrapped for good.

“The President was looking forward to an interview with Fox Soul to discuss the Super Bowl, the State of the Union, and critical issues impacting the everyday lives of Black Americans,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a tweet. “We’ve been informed that Fox Corp. has asked for the interview to be cancelled.”

Hours later, Fox Corp. issued a statement citing “some initial confusion” the night before, but concluding that Fox Soul still looked forward to hosting the interview.

But by Friday evening — a point by which presidents and TV networks traditionally record Super Bowl interviews ahead of the Sunday program — a White House official informed POLITICO that nothing had changed since providing the earlier comments.

“FOX has since put out a statement indicating the interview was rescheduled, which is inaccurate,” the White House official said. While the person did not elaborate, Biden was not expected to conduct a Super Bowl interview of any kind.

The saga comes after initial talks fell apart between the White House and Fox News, the company’s highly-rated network. Earlier this week, a Fox anchor said the White House had ghosted the network. In the days that followed, Fox representatives confirmed that productive discussions were effectively over.

White House officials declined to provide specifics on why their outreach to Fox stopped. Fox’s Bret Baier was viewed as the most likely anchor from the news and conservative opinion network to land the president. Biden sat down in previous years with news anchors from NBC and CBS.

The decision not to have Biden tangle with one of Fox News’ top anchors means the White House was willing to sacrifice a massive pre-game audience on Sunday to which the president could share his message. But it also suggests the White House was unwilling to reward a network that houses prime-time hosts who mercilessly assail the administration and Democrats.

Instead, Biden’s team worked on landing an agreement with Fox Soul, a streaming outfit part of Fox’s TV stations division and geared toward a Black audience. White House officials had arranged for the interview to be conducted by Fox Sports host Mike Hill and actress Vivica A. Fox. Fox Soul general manager James DuBose had planned to produce the interview. All three flew Friday from Los Angeles to Washington for the interview.

The White House seeking out Fox Soul was seen as a way to have the president avoid appearing with a Fox News personality while still going through with an interview. Biden has yet to sit for an interview with Fox News, making a different calculation than his former boss, Barack Obama. While the Obama White House is remembered for icing Fox News journalists — leading other networks to offer their solidarity — Obama did sit for a pair of pre-game interviews with former Fox host Bill O’Reilly.

  • Fundraising gets tougher, 2023 super challenging for startup founders: Report

Fundraising gets tougher, 2023 super challenging for startup founders: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid a deepening funding winter, only 53 per cent of startup founders had a positive fundraising experience (71 per cent of those who attempted to raise) in 2022, down from 92 per cent in 2021, a report said on Wednesday.

Founders expect this year to be challenging, with 58 per cent of founders expecting a tough fundraising environment, according to the report by InnoVen Capital, Asia’s leading venture debt firm.

Hiring is also expected to slow down with only 38 per cent of startup founders expecting a higher pace of hiring predominantly in early-stage companies. The report also highlighted that hiring good talent is still a challenge for founders.

“2022 was a challenging year for the startup ecosystem with an end to cheap money, rising interest rates and a challenging geopolitical environment. The positive aspect of the slowdown has been an increased appreciation for building sustainable business models,” said Ashish Sharma, Managing Partner, InnoVen Capital India.

The annual ‘Start up Outlook’ report gathered insights from 120 startup founders across stages and sectors such as fintech, software-as-a-service (SaaS), direct-to-consumer (D2C), logistics, e-commerce, healthtech and others.

An overwhelming majority (85 per cent) of founders identified that focus on more sustainable business models has been the most important impact of the current funding slowdown.

Tightening funding environment has also led to an increased focus on profitability and unit economics.

“While both growth and profitability are important, for the first time in seven years, founders had a higher bias for profitability over growth. Around 55 per cent of founders stated profitability as a bigger focus area, compared to only 17 per cent in 2021,” the findings showed.

Nearly 19 per cent of founders claim to be EBITDA profitable, while 62 per cent aim to turn EBITDA profitable in the next two years, up from 51 per cent last year.

Startup founders are also increasingly looking towards a domestic IPO as the likely mode of exit, despite the recent volatility of public market tech companies.

“Edtech was seen as the most overhyped sector, while healthtech and agritech were chosen as the most under-hyped sector,” said the report.

Founders chose fintech platform Zerodha as their most admired Indian start-up, for a third year in a row. Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath, the co-founders of Zerodha, were chosen as the favorite founder.
