Priyanka slams KCR govt for bearing witness to 8,000 farmer suicides in state since 2014

Hyderabad: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday accused the Telangana government of failing to fulfil the aspirations of people with the requirement of water, funds and jobs not being provided to them so far even as the state witnessed suicides of 8,000 farmers since 2014 when the party came to power.

Attacking the BRS government in a public meeting here, she alleged that only those who are close to the ruling party are getting jobs, water and funds.

“(Around) 8,000 farmers committed suicide from 2014. Every day on an average approximately three farmers committed suicide,” she charged.

Referring to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s regime, she said the dispensation thinks that Telangana is their “jagir (estate) and they are the new Jagirdars (estate owning class)”.

At the event, the Congress released ‘Youth Declaration’, a commitment to the youth of Telangana, if the party comes to power in the state, in the presence of Vadra.

  • Indian celebrity suicides that turned into legal cases

Indian celebrity suicides that turned into legal cases

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A special CBI court here on Friday acquitted Sooraj Pancholi in the abetment of actor Jiah Khan’s suicide a decade after she was found hanging in her Juhu apartment.

Special CBI court judge A S Sayyad said due to paucity of evidence, the court holds Sooraj Pancholi not guilty.

It is, however, not the only case where an actor’s former partner has been accused of abetment of suicide.

Some of the high profile cases that led to legal battles are:

Sushant Singh Rajput: The Bollywood star died on June 14, 2020, at his home in Bandra Mumbai. At the time of his death, Rajput was in a relationship with Rhea Chakraborty, also an actor.

His father, KK Singh, filed an FIR against Rhea and her family members accusing her of abetment of suicide and siphoning off money from the late actor’s account, among others.

After the CBI registered the FIR, a case was lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Rhea to look into the money-laundering angle. The NCB also stepped in after WhatsApp chats revealed that the actor was given drugs. A 12,000-page chargesheet was filed by the NCB in drugs probe. The case is still under investigation.

Tunisha Sharma: The 20-year-old TV actor was found hanging on the sets of a TV serial near Valiv in Palghar on December 24, 2022.

Her co-star Sheezan Khan was arrested the next day for abetment of suicide on a complaint lodged by Tunisha’s mother.

A court in Vasai, Maharashtra gave bail to Sheezan in the case on March 5, 2023, and said there was no need to keep him in jail since the probe was complete and chargesheet filed.

Tunisha and Sheezan were in a relationship but had broken up two month’s prior to the former’s death.

Pratyusha Banerjee: The popular TV star of “Balika Vadhu” fame was found dead at the Mumbai apartment on April 1, 2016. Her parents alleged that she was murdered by her boyfriend, actor-producer Rahul Raj Singh, who later applied for anticipatory bail avoiding arrest in the case. It is reportedly still active in the court.

Vaishali Takkar: A noted TV actor Vaishali Takkar allegedly committed suicide at her house in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on October 16, 2022. The 30-year-old actor left a note in which she accused her former partner Rahul Navlani and his wife for harassing her.

A case was registered against Navlani and his wife Disha under Indian Penal Code Section 306 (abetment of suicide). He was arrested days after Vaishali’s demise and was released three months later on bail.

Disha went absconding after the incident. However, a court granted anticipatory bail to Disha in November last year. The case is ongoing.

  • Set up grievance redressal cells in colleges to curb student suicides: GIO

Set up grievance redressal cells in colleges to curb student suicides: GIO

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In view of soaring student suicides, the Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO) on Friday requested the establishment of grievance redressal cells within the campuses to curb the incidents.

A representation was submitted to the Telangana education minister Sabitha Indira Reddy by the GIO members who requested redressal cells in accordance with the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

They also urged the minister to ensure existing cells be restructured to include elected student representatives, making them more approachable and student-friendly.

The representation suggested the expansion of the scope of redressal to include more student-related issues beyond the currently specified ones while highlighting the need for counseling units in colleges.

According to the UGC guidelines, every higher education institution in the country must establish a student’s grievances and redressal cell, as per the Student Redressal Regulation 2018, Section 4(A)(I).

These cells are tasked with investigating complaints and taking action in cases related to harassment in institutions.

While some colleges have initiated online redressal portals, the recent trend of student suicide cases has called into question the efficiency of these cells.

President of the National Federation of GIO, Sumaiya Roshan said, “The absence of a safe environment becomes a threat for students from taking advantage of these opportunities effectively.”

“The minister accepted the memorandum and confirmed an appointment to discuss the issue in detail while the GIO plans to include student representatives in the meeting to share their personal experiences,” she added.

  • Telangana’s farmer suicides have reduced between 2017-2021: Centre

Telangana’s farmer suicides have reduced between 2017-2021: Centre

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Centre acknowledged on Friday that Telangana’s farmer suicide rate has drastically decreased from 846 in 2017 to 352 in 2021.

This was ascribed to a number of state government measures, whereas farmer suicides in BJP-ruled Maharashtra were on the rise and in Karnataka showed little change.

Friday in the Rajya Sabha, MP Narain Dass Gupta asked a question, and on that day, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented information about the number of farmer suicides in various States since 2017.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Telangana had 846 farmers and cultivators commit suicide in 2017, which subsequently declined to 352 in 2021.

The declaration from the Centre is significant in light of the accusations made by the opposition parties regarding an increase in farmer suicides in the State.

In response to the news, Agriculture Minister S. Niranjan Reddy hoped that the BJP and other opposition parties would refrain from circulating untrue information about farmer suicides and making charges against the State government.

Over the past four years, Maharashtra and Karnataka have continued to have the highest rate of farmer suicides. From 2,426 in 2017 to 2,640 in 2021, the comparable period saw a rise in farmer suicides in Maharashtra.

In Karnataka, the number of farmer suicides increased slightly from 1,157 in 2017 to 1,170 in 2021. The number of farmer suicides in Andhra Pradesh increased from 375 in 2017 to 481 in 2021.
