Online ‘personal brands’ are key to job success for Gen Z: Study

    [ad_1]

London: Generation Z, people born between 1997-2012, perceive online “personal brands” as a crucial tool to gain more advantage in job markets, new research reveals.

The study, led by the University of East Anglia in collaboration with the University of Greenwich, demonstrates the importance of authentically building online personal branding strategies and tactics to bridge the gap between Gen Z’s desired and perceived images on social media when job seeking.

The findings, published in the journal Information Technology & People, showed that all Gen Z participants perceived digital personal brands as an essential tool to portray themselves and project strong impressions to employers.

The effort in building and managing personal brands creates win-win results for Gen Z students and employers in the recruitment process.

“Previous research has argued that professionals tend to maintain a perfect image online, but we find that for Gen Z job seekers, an imperfect online image works better,” said Prof. Alastair Morrison at the University of Greenwich.

The more Gen Z students focus on portraying their brands on platforms such as LinkedIn, the higher the probability that employers will find their profiles and be better able to evaluate candidate talents, skills, traits, and the fit with company culture.

Employers highly recommend LinkedIn to Gen Z students and expect them to build LinkedIn profiles.

“The differentiating factor between Millennials and Gen Z is the use of technology from an early age and how this has impacted their online behaviour. Gen Z are always connected to digital environments through interactions with their networks, gaming, consuming videos, and creating their own content to share on social media,” said co-author Dr. Brad McKenna, Associate Professor in Information Systems at UEA.

“Personal branding has shifted from celebrities and top-tier managers to employees and job seekers, making the ways in which people market themselves more of a conscious effort. Job seekers today need to effectively communicate their talents to prospective employers,” added co-author Dr. Wenjie Cai, from the University of Greenwich.

The researchers recommend that universities seek personal brand information from Gen Z students to understand them better and to mentor them in the varied ways needed to achieve personal goals and objectives based on skills, knowledge, and opportunities for training and growth.

Companies should utilise all possible opportunities to engage with student job seekers, share their organisational cultures, and be open about what they are expecting for specific positions.

  • Is BJP planning detailed study on old pension scheme?

Is BJP planning detailed study on old pension scheme?

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: If sources in political circles are to be believed, the saffron party is thinking of working on the old pension scheme (OPS) for the government employees.

The BJP government in Karnataka has reportedly formed a committee to study the OPS. This committee will come to Rajasthan soon as the desert state has announced OPS for its state employees.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Assembly elections are to be held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh five-six months after the Karnataka polls which are scheduled somewhere in May, however the final date is to be announced.

In such a situation, it seems that the BJP will soon clarify its stand on OPS in these states also. If this happens, then the old pension scheme will become a big issue in the Lok Sabha elections to be held after 13 months.

Meanwhile, BJP state president Satish Poonia expressed his unawareness on any such development.

Speaking to IANS, he said, “This is a policy matter and Delhi has to decide on it. We will follow the line which the party gives us. Veteran leaders are analysing the issue and finding a ‘vikalp (solution)’ that will be the party line later on. We will be able to give an official version once it is finalised.”

Meanwhile, he said, “We spoke to Himachal Pradesh former Chief Minister and he denied OPS to be the key reason for why the party lost. There were many factors of the poll loss and one amongst was factionalism. The ex-Himachal CM told me.”

Congress leaders have been promoting that OPS was the major reason why the saffron party lost in Himachal, however, Poonia mentioned many other reasons for the party’s defeat.

Meanwhile, Poonia said that central leadership will decide on how to take this issue in future, he added.

  • Over 10 million older adults in India likely have dementia: AI study

Over 10 million older adults in India likely have dementia: AI study

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: More than 10 million older adults aged 60 or over in India may have dementia, comparable to the prevalence rates for countries such as the US and the UK, according to a first-of-its-kind study.

Dementia leads to impairment of mental processes, such as memory, thinking, reasoning and judgement, and thus seriously impairs an individual’s ability to perform daily functions.

According to a study published in the journal Nature Public Health Emergency Collection, by 2050 people over 60 years of age are predicted to constitute 19.1 per cent of the total population in India.

This ageing of the population is expected to be accompanied by a dramatic increase in the prevalence of dementia, a syndrome not taken very seriously in the country.

The latest research, published in the journal Neuroepidemiology, used an artificial intelligence (AI) technique known as semi-supervised machine learning to analyse data from 31,477 older adults.

The international team of researchers found that the prevalence rate of dementia in adults aged 60 or over in India could be 8.44 per cent — equating to 10.08 million older adults in the country.

This compares to prevalence rates recorded in similar age groups of 8.8 per cent in the US, 9 per cent in the UK and between 8.5 and 9 per cent in Germany and France, they said.

The prevalence of dementia was greater for those who were older, was females, received no education, and lived in rural areas, the researchers found.

“Our research was based on the first and only nationally representative aging study in India with more than 30,000 participating older adults in the country,” said Haomiao Jin, co-author of the study and Lecturer in Health Data Sciences at the University of Surrey, UK.

“AI has a unique strength in interpreting large and complex data like this, and our research found that the prevalence of dementia may be higher than prior estimates from local samples,” Jin said in a statement.

The research team from the University of Surrey, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, both in the US, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi developed an AI learning model.

The model was trained on data, which consisted of 70 per cent labelled dataset with dementia diagnoses from a novel online consensus.

The remaining 30 per cent of the data was reserved as a test set to assess the AI’s predictive accuracy.

The AI taught itself to predict dementia status for unlabelled observations without dementia diagnoses in the dataset.

“As we are seeing with this research, AI has a huge potential to discover patterns in complex data, improving our understanding of how diseases impact people across very different communities to support the development of precision medical interventions to save lives,” Professor Adrian Hilton, Director of the University of Surrey’s Institute for People-Centered AI, added.

Muslims in US are marginalized in media, cinema: Study

    [ad_1]

Muslims in the US are suffering from marginalization in the media and cinema. This is found out by Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, a leading think tank in the US.

The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative develops targeted, research-based solutions to tackle inequality. It does original research and sponsored projects, studying diversity and inclusion in the media and entertainment industry.

The USC Annenberg’s inclusion initiative indicated that Muslims make up 25 percent of the world’s population, but their presence as characters in popular TV series does not exceed 1.1 percent.

The study stated that images of Muslims are often linked to terrorism or violence. It found that “more than 30% of the 98 Muslim personalities assessed were vulnerable to perpetrators of violence, while nearly 40% were the target of violent attacks.”

There are two significant pointers about the portrayal of Muslims in popular culture, tells the study. One, there is a common trope that Muslim men are portrayed in a bad light. Second is the portrayal of Muslim women in their veil.

A deliberate stereotype is built which makes the public assume that the ‘veil is a symbol of oppression’. The stereotypes built relate to “the feeling of the liberation of Muslim women when they take off the veil.”

Muslim women in popular culture are commonly portrayed as submissive and fearful of their male counterparts. This is another serotype that is deliberately built to reinforce the idea that Muslim women are vulnerable to oppression by their menfolk.

The study says that the media focus is often placed on the faith of the Muslim personalities interviewed. This makes the public believe that religion is the focus of every Muslim’s life. Such a stereotype reduces the chances of showing some other aspects of Muslim men/women’s personalities.

“These kinds of stereotypes are the cause of Muslims being isolated and not getting integrated as productive members of American societies”, says the study.

The study revealed that among the 98 Muslim personalities interviewed, almost half of them referred to their faith in some way or other, while 23.5 percent of them revealed that they were portrayed non-verbally on the grounds that they are Muslims.

‘Los Angeles Times’ has published a detailed article on Muslims in the US, based on Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. The newspaper has indicated that Muslim immigrants in America suffer from abuse in media and Cinema in the US.

  • Covid may cause increased chest pain months after infection: Study

Covid may cause increased chest pain months after infection: Study

    [ad_1]

Washington: COVID-19 patients may be at increased risk of suffering chest pain in the six months to a year after the infection, which could be a sign of future cardiovascular complications, according to a study.

Nearly 19 per cent of US adults who had previously tested positive for COVID-19 report having “Long COVID,” where they experience signs and symptoms for four weeks or more after the initial phase of infection.

Researchers from Intermountain Health in the US studied nearly 150,000 patients for cardiovascular symptoms. They found that patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had higher rates of chest pain in the six months to a year after the infection.

“Many COVID-19 patients experience symptoms well beyond the acute phase of infection,” said Heidi T. May, cardiovascular epidemiologist at Intermountain Health and principal investigator of the study.

“While we didn’t see any significant rates of major events like heart attack or stroke in patients who had an initial mild initial infection, we did find chest pains to be a persistent problem, which could be a sign of future cardiovascular complications,” May said.

The study finding was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 2023 Scientific Conference in New Orleans, US.

In the large retrospective study, researchers compared three groups of Intermountain Health patients.

The team found that at six months and one-year intervals, patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had significantly higher rates of experiencing chest pain, but saw no other increases in cardiovascular events.

“As of right now, the symptoms aren’t necessary translating into hard outcomes, but that’s something that will need to be reassessed over time,” May said.

“It could be that lasting effects of infection on the cardiovascular system are hard to quantify in terms of diagnoses or other events in the short-term and won’t be realised until longer follow up,” the researcher added.

  • Social media users who share more news care less about accuracy: Study

Social media users who share more news care less about accuracy: Study

    [ad_1]

New York: People who share news items extensively on social media often tend to discern less over their accuracy, according to a study.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducted an experiment to understand a core tension between the impulse to share news and to think about whether it is true.

The results showed that even considering whether or not to share news items on social media reduces people’s ability to tell truths from falsehoods.

The study involved asking more than 3,000 people to assess whether various news headlines were accurate.

But if participants were first asked whether they would share that content, they were 35 per cent worse at telling truths from falsehoods. Participants were also 18 per cent less successful at discerning truth when asked about sharing right after evaluating them.

“Just asking people whether they want to share things makes them more likely to believe headlines they wouldn’t otherwise have believed, and less likely to believe headlines they would have believed,” David Rand, Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management said.

“Thinking about sharing just mixes them up,” he added.

While people’s willingness to share news content and their ability to judge it accurately can both be bolstered separately, the study suggests the two things do not positively reinforce each other when considered at the same time.

“The second you ask people about accuracy, you’re prompting them, and the second you ask about sharing, you’re prompting them,” Ziv Epstein, a doctoral student in the Human Dynamics group at the MIT Media Lab said.

“If you ask about sharing and accuracy at the same time, it can undermine people’s capacity for truth discernment.”

The paper will be published in the journal Science Advances.

  • Teens Whose Parents Smoke Are Likely To Take Up Smoking: Study

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Teenagers are much more likely to smoke and be dependent on nicotine if a parent and grandparent is dependent on nicotine, a recent study has revealed.

The cross-sectional study published in journal of Integrative Medicine and Public Health, a publication of Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Srinagar,  has revealed that teenager whose parents smoke are five times more likely to become smokers and the teenagers whose grandparents smoke are two times more likely to become smokers.

As per the study, 430 patients which included 215 tobacco users and 215 non-tobacco users were included in the study and they were aged between 15 and 25 years and were age and gender matched in the ratio of 1:1.

A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information regarding their self-tobacco use, form of use, parental and grandparental tobacco use.

Among the 215 study participants in each group, the distributions of male and female participants were 212 (98.6%) and three (1.4%), respectively, the study participants with paternal tobacco habit were 5.28 times more likely to adopt the tobacco habit compared to the study participants without paternal tobacco use and study participants with paternal grandfather tobacco use were 1.57 times more likely to develop the tobacco habit than the study participants without paternal grandfather tobacco use and both the association was found to be statistically highly, it reads.

It said that participants who had higher maternal strictness were 0.077 less likely to develop the tobacco habit compared to the study participants with lower maternal strictness which was found to be statistically significant. Participants with higher paternal warmth were 0.097 times less likely to adopt the tobacco habit compared to study participants with lower paternal warmth which was found to be statistically significant.

For an effective tobacco control program among tobacco users, counseling of participants’ father and mother should be done simultaneously.

It said anti-tobacco activities should emphasize and make parents realize the importance the family plays in the development of tobacco behavior—(KNO)
