24L school students to get Rs 200 cr worth books, uniforms in Telangana: Edu min
Hyderabad: Telangana education minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy said that free distribution of notebooks, textbooks, and school uniforms, that sum up to a cost of Rs 200 crore, among 24 lakh students in Telangana’s government schools will be uptaken.
On Wednesday, during a review meeting with officials of the education department at the Secretariat, the minister said that the free distribution was facilitated by chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao with a generous approach towards the development of the education sector.
“Children studying in primary schools would be provided with workbooks also. The requirement of notebooks for students in high schools was already taken into count and supplies would be made accordingly,” said Sabitha.
Additionally, students will be receiving bilingual textbooks this year along with two pairs of school uniforms, worth upto Rs 150 crore, in total.
Directing that the free distribution be taken up in the presence of parents, and public representatives, Sabitha said that the schools will reopen on June 12 and the new academic year should commence in a festive mode.
Talking about the ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ programme, the minister asked officials to expedite the arrangements in government schools by June first week.

New Delhi: The presence of Indian students in American universities has increased by 19 per cent compared to the last year, and nearly 21 per cent of over one million foreign students are Indian students, a US government report said.
In 2021-22, 1,99,182 students with India as their place of origin were pursuing higher education in the US, as against 1,67,582 in 2020-21, according to the Open Doors Report, an annual survey on international students released Monday. In 2012-13, there were 96,654 Indian students in higher education in the US.
The rise in Indian students moving to the US is likely to overtake China in 2022-23, with 82,000 visas issued between June and August – the highest number among all countries.
The year 2021-22 saw 62,000 student visas being issued, said Don Heflin, Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs at the US embassy in New Delhi.
In contrast, China fell behind India as strict quarantine norms and travel restrictions due to Covid made it harder for Chinese students to acquire visas. Heflin said that around 110,000-120,000 visas are issued to Chinese students, which fell to around 50,000.
In 2021-22, China and India collectively accounted for 52 per cent of all international students in the US, the report, which is sponsored by the US Department of State and implemented by the non-profit Institute of International Education (IIE), said.
China showed a drop of nine per cent in the latest round, with the number of Chinese students pursuing higher education in the US going down from 3,17,299 in 2020-21 to 2,90,086 in 2021-22.
A decade ago, there were 2,35,597 Chinese higher education students in the US. The rise in Indian numbers came after the slump caused by the pandemic years.
Between 2018-19 and 2019-20, as well as 2019-20 and 2020-21, the number of Indian students enrolled in US universities had fallen by 4.4 per cent and 13.2 per cent respectively.
The 19 per cent increase in Indian students studying in America was largely driven by graduate students, Heflin said. A majority of Indian students chose Math and Computer Science, Engineering and Business, and Management, according to a US embassy official.
Overall, the total number of international students pursuing higher education in the US went up from 9.14 lakh in 2020-21 to 9.48 lakh in 2021-22.
“It is clear that Indian students and their parents recognize the value of US education, one that prepares them to leverage their newly gained know-how to tackle the world’s challenges and readies them for future opportunities, whether that’s in Artificial Intelligence, emerging technologies or entrepreneurship and innovation,” Gloria Berbena, minister counselor for Public Diplomacy, said.
Washington: In 2022, India sent more students to the United States as compared to the previous year while China sent fewer, according to a new report.
“The number of students from China and India made Asia the most popular continent of origin. Comparable to the drop from the calendar year 2020 to 2021, China sent fewer students in 2022 compared to 2021 (-24,796), while India sent more students (+64,300),” US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in its annual report.
According to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the number of international students enrolled at kindergarten through grade 12 schools increased 7.8 per cent from 2021 to 2022 (+3,887). No K-12 schools hosted more than 700 international students in the calendar year 2022, similar to the calendar year 2021, the report said.
All four regions in the United States saw an increase in international student records from 2021 to 2022, with respective increases ranging from 8 to 11 per cent, the report said.
There were 117,301 pre and post-completion optional practical training (OPT) students with both an employment authorisation document (EAD) and who reported working for an employer in the calendar year 2022, compared to 115,651 in the calendar year 2021 a 1.4 per cent increase, it said.
In the calendar year 2022; 7,683 SEVP-certified schools were eligible to enroll international students, a decrease of 400 schools from 2021 (8,038 schools), it said.
In 2022, California hosted 225,173 international students, the largest percentage of international students (16.5 per cent) of any US state, the report said.
There were 276,723 active exchange visitors in the United States in 2022 compared to 240,479 active exchange visitors in 2021 a 15 per cent increase.
The report said 46 per cent (6,21,347) of all active SEVIS records hailed from either China (3,24,196) or India (2,97,151) in the calendar year 2022, one percentage point fewer than calendar year 2021.
The overall number of active F-1 and M-1 student records coming from Asia increased by 68,678 from the calendar year 2021 to the calendar year 2022, with student record trends varying across different countries.
Seventy per cent of all international students in the United States call Asia home. Other Asian countries that sent fewer students this year compared to last include Saudi Arabia (-4,115), Kuwait (-658) and Malaysia (-403).

They told GNS that two students, Hidayat Ahmad Tantray son of Ab. Rashid and Ibrahim Ahmad Tantray son of Noor Mohd – both residents of Beehama Ganderbal, were attacked by an unidentified youth, leaving them with multiple injuries.
The duo, they said, was taken to District Hospital Ganderbal from where they were referred to SKIMS Soura for further treatment.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Hidayat Ahmad Tantray and Ibrahim Ahmad Tantray were attacked by some unknown persons today afternoon, resulting in injuries to them.
He said soon after the incident they were shifted to district hospital Ganderbal for treatment where from they have been referred to SKIMS Soura for further treatment.

Srinagar, Apr 30: In the absence of any regulating authority, Private Coaching Centres in Kashmir Valley especially Srinagar city are out to loot parents at sweet will.
Middle-class families are finding it hard to get their wards admitted to private coaching centres.
News Agency Kashmir News Trust has been receiving a plethora of texts from parents requesting to highlight the issue and the loot that is going on in Srinagar coaching centres in the name of education.
“Asalamu Alaikum! Sir I request you to post about the hike in the fees in coaching centers in Parraypora Srinagar and others as well, as the fee has been raised abruptly from 40K to 80K and even more. And you might be knowing that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea We as members of middle-class families cannot afford such a huge amount with other expenses like hostel fees and all so. We request you to support us against this unlawful act by coaching centers. Your support can make it possible for every parent and student to make their dreams come true. Thank You,” reads one of the texts from an anxious student that KNT has received.
The craze of studying at coaching centres and the paradigm shift of the formal schooling of students have given a boost to the coaching business in Kashmir Valley.
Besides students from high and higher secondary classes, there are roughly 20,000 students who opt for private coaching for competing in NEET, JEE and other national-level exams.
The amount that is being charged from the students in the name of fee varies from coaching centre to coaching centre at Parraypora, Raj Bagh and other parts of the city. Thousands of students mostly from rural areas can be seen thronging at different coaching centres at Parraypora which of late has been called the ‘Kota of Kashmir’.
“It has become a prestige point for these coaching centres to charge as much as they can. These coaching centres attract the attention of the students through scholarships and other modes. In the absence of any regulation, they loot the parents at will,” said Muhammad Hanief who paid a hefty amount to get his daughter admitted at a coaching centre in Srinagar.
Last year, a report claimed that excluding the fee charged for the class 9th to 12th coaching, each student is charged more than Rs 50K for the three months crash course offered by different coaching centres and the amount goes beyond Rs 70K to one lakh as well.
“A poor can’t afford education in these business-oriented coaching centres. Ironically, the government that has been taking measures from time to time in regulating the functioning of these coaching centres has never bothered to take any decision about the fee structures of these coaching centres.
An official from one of the coaching centres told KNT that they offer special discounts to students from poor backgrounds. To authenticate his claim, the official provided the name and cell number of one of the parents whose son got admission at a huge discount.
When contacted, the man admitted that instead of Rs 60K he paid only Rs 35K for one year course for his 11th-grade son. He, however, said that Rs 35K is also a huge amount for him. “Exceptions are always there, I was given relaxation after the intervention of one of my friend’s friend, but the majority of the students pay Rs 60K,” he added.
“In order to provide a level playing field, it has become inevitable for the government to regulate the fee mechanism of these coaching centres for whom education is secondary and business first. We request the government to stop these coaching centres from fleecing the parents and intervene without any delay,” said parents. [KNT]
London: The United Kingdom’s Imperial College announced the new scholarship programme for Indian Masters students, the college informed through a statement.
According to the statement, under the ‘Future Leaders Scholarship’ programme, the college will support 30 students over the next three years with half of the scholarships reserved for female scholars.
This announcement came while Union Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh visited Imperial to meet researchers and students and strengthen ties with India.
The scholarships will be for the students in the MSc programmes across Imperial’s Faculties of Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine and the Business School, the statement read.
Talking about the scholarship programme, Professor Peter Haynes, Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) at Imperial, said, “It is a real priority for Imperial to continue to facilitate and support two-way mobility between India and the UK.”
“I hope that we are able to welcome even more students from India in the future and I am very pleased to announce that Imperial is investing just over Pound 400,000 in scholarships for the future STEM-B leaders of India. The investment will see the launch of 30 merit-based scholarships over the next three years, with the first application round opening next academic year,” he added.
He further informed that at least 50 per cent of these prestigious ‘Future Leaders’ scholarships will be reserved for female scholars.
The professor hoped to continue to work together on building upon the success and that Imperial can be at the fore of supporting UK-India partnerships in the coming decade.”
The Imperial College also announced a new partnership with Chevening for scholars from India. Funding will be available for scholars who demonstrate the greatest potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in India. The Chevening scholarship award will support academic fees and provide a monthly stipend, as per the statement.
During his visit to the college, Singh met with some of Imperial’s Indian students and scholars and encouraged them to reach their potential. He also highlighted the rapid progress science in India was making in a number of fields and the growth of Indian startups.
The minister, accompanied by Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, principle scientific advisor to the Union government, and other scientists and officials, visited Imperial’s labs and heard about Imperial’s growing research collaborations with India, according to the statement.
