New York: A 47-year-old Indian-American data analyst was killed on the spot after being struck by a bus at Boston’s international airport where he had gone to pick up a friend, according to a media report.

Massachusetts State Police said Kolla was at the lower level of Terminal B to pick up a friend around 5 p.m. when he was struck by a bus.

“Kolla was standing on the driver’s side of his Acura SUV while, simultaneously, the Dartmouth Transportation motor coach was travelling on the roadway. The investigation indicates that the middle of the bus made contact with Kolla and dragged him along the driver’s side of his SUV,” State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.

An off-duty nurse rushed to help Kolla but he died at the scene, the report added.
Troopers interviewed the bus driver, a 54-year-old woman, and inspected the bus. She has not been charged at this point in the investigation, the report said.

The passengers were quickly rushed off the bus and their luggage was moved to another part of the airport.

In a statement, Dartmouth Coach said, “Our deepest sympathies are with everyone impacted by this evening’s incident at Logan Airport. We’re working in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police and Massport to gather further information.”

Kolla worked at Takeda in the company’s Global Oncology division. Takeda industries told Boston.com in an email that they are “deeply saddened to learn of his unexpected passing.”

“We send our heartfelt condolences to Vishwachand’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time and will be looking at how we can help offer any support as we respect the family’s privacy during this time,” they wrote.

Meanwhile, Kolla’s relatives have set up a gofundme page USD 406,151 raised of USD 750,000 goal.

Kolla is survived by his wife, and two sons, according to the page.

Andhra student dies after being struck by a police vehicle in US

New York: A 23-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh died after being struck by a police patrol vehicle in Seattle, a media report said.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a student of Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union, was walking near Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street when she was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle on Monday, The Seattle Times reported.

Police arrived at the scene just after 8 p.m. and immediately started with CPR after they found Kandula with life threatening injuries. She was later transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.

The officer driving the patrol SUV was responding to a priority one call at the request of the Seattle Fire Department just after 8 p.m., according to the Seattle Police Department. The police did not name the officer but said in a statement that he has been with the department since November 2019.

“At this point in the investigation, we have no reason to believe the officer intended to hit that woman,” Seattle Police Department spokesperson Detective Valerie Carson told Seattle Times.

Carson further said that Kandula’s death will not be investigated as a use of force case, and the officer has not been placed on leave.

“I was in shock,” Ashok Mandula, victim’s uncle, told Seattle Times after he was informed of the tragedy.

He said Kandula first travelled to the United States in 2021 from Adoni in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, and spent a month with his family.

Daughter of a single mother who teaches in an elementary school in Adoni, Kandula was to receive a master’s in information systems this December, Mandula told Times.

He added that Kandula’s mother had taken a loan for her education. Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad will lead the investigation, Seattle Police said.

  • ‘Sikh’ struck on head in hate-motivated assault in Canada

‘Sikh’ struck on head in hate-motivated assault in Canada

    [ad_1]

Toronto: A man, apparently a Sikh, was allegedly struck on the head, causing his turban to fall on the ground, by an unidentified man, who also made “derogatory comments” at a subway station in Canada, police said.

Police officers responded to an assault call at the Bloor-Yonge Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway station following the incident last week.

Upon reaching the scene, police found that a man had been struck on the head causing his “religious head covering” — which they later identified as turban — to fall on the ground.

The suspect allegedly passed derogatory comments at the victim before he left the TTC station, the Toronto Police said in a statement.

The victim, whose age or religious affiliation were not released by the police, sustained minor injuries on his head.

However, a report in Omni News, a multicultural and multilingual broadcaster in Canada, confirmed the identity of the victim as Sikh in its report.

The suspect was last seen wearing a blue hat and a black jacket and was carrying a black bag.

“After consultation with the specialised Hate Crime Unit, the investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence,” the Toronto police said in its statement.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said police are investigating the hate-motivated assault of a man at the subway station. “Our transit system – and city at large – must be safe places for all and free of hatred, without exception,” Tory tweeted after the incident.

“Hate has no place in our city. We must all call out and stand together against discrimination and violence,” he said.

Condemning the incident, the Toronto Transit Commission said that they will continue to assist Toronto Police in the course of their investigation.
