Nam Te Maaz Explained the Strong Communal Bonds of Kashmir

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: In Kashmiri language and culture, Nam te Maaz depicts an unbreakable bond. This phrase was the title of the last play of the 8-day-long Theatre Festival Kashmir 2023.

The play showcased the relationship between Kashmir Hindus and Kashmir Muslims and their journey over years.

The play opened with a narration briefing about the living of both religions together in Kashmir until the 1990s when most of the Kashmir Hindus moved out. The narrator spoke about the brotherhood between the two and the unbreakable bond which remained unaffected after decades of separation and misunderstandings.

It narrated the story of Roop Kishan Dhar who lived in Raj Bagh. He also left Kashmir in the 1990s and Jan Sahab, a local Kashmiri Muslim took care of his home.  Dhar would often visit his home even after going to Jammu and later settling in America.

The stage showed two houses, one of a Hindu and the other of a Muslim. Religious signs were used to identity the two homes.

The play starts with a conversation between Dhar and Jan Sahab. Dhar has visited Kashmir after a long time. He is seen in a Pheran, the traditional Kashmir cloak that is now being seen as part f Kashmir identity. They talk about their lives, children, and the changes that have occurred. Jan Sahab had a conversation with his wife after this where he also shares his connection with Dhar.

The next conversation is again between Jan Sahab and Dhar where they talk about the time when Dhar left Kashmir and the conflict that continued. They recounted the loss that both sides faced.

Once in a conversation, Dhar noticed a window from Jan Sahab’s house that opened into Dhar’s land. The conversation turned into verbal duelling. Jan Sahab gives a word to Dhar on fixing the issue by removing the window.

Afterward, in a monologue, Dhar talks to himself expressing his varied opinion about the matter. He seems to be confused about whether he has done right or wrong but then he convinces himself that if he would not do this Jan Sahab would gradually take over his whole land.

The play is placed at a time when the Covid19 had started beginning and impacted the lives across the world. Dhar tested positive for the virus. He was quarantined. Jan Sahab did not stop going to his place. He would still go to Dhar with meals. This was despite the fcat that his family was quite upset with this behaviour as they thought the virus could spread to them.

As Dhar recovered, he got ready to go back to America. While leaving, he expressed his gratitude to Jan Sahab and his family. He gives them gifts. Jan Sahab also reveals the truth about constructing the window from his side as it has been suggested by his father to keep an eye on Dhar’s home. Dhar realises his mistake and asks him to perish the wall separating both houses.

The play was presented by JK Cultural Revolution, written by Sohan Lal Koul, directed by Gul Riyaz, designed by Hassan Javaid, assistant direction by Showkat Magray, and set design by Mohammad Yousuf Mir and Imran Farooq.  The characters were played by Qazi Faiz – Dhar, Hassan Javaid-Jan Sahab, Shafiya Maqbool – Jaan’s Wife, Aashiq Hussain- Zameer(Son), Syed Shabir Rizvi- paramedic.

Tale of Talent & Potential: Mohammad Suhail Khan, Pulwama’s Specially-abled Artist Setting A Strong Precedent

    [ad_1]

“If government gives me assistance, it will increase my confidence to do more”: Suhail Khan

    Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, Mar 6 (GNS): Stress, mental imbalance and fear, a tale of a specially-abled person, who has seen all this but never stopped. Located approximately 13 kilometres from the main city, Hani-Pora Pulwama is home to a 29-year-old artist, Mohammad Suhail Khan, who is deaf and mute but exceptionally versatile. Despite deficiency he keeps going on and proves that, if you have talent you can conquer the world.

Suhail Khan is a 29-year-old artist who has faced numerous challenges in his life due to his deafness and inability to speak. Despite these challenges, Suhail has proven to be a talented and versatile artist with a range of skills and interests.

Suhail’s journey as an artist began at a young age, when he discovered his passion for drawing and painting. Despite the difficulties he faced in communicating with others and expressing himself, Suhail’s talent has been shining through his art. As he grew older, Suhail began to explore other mediums and techniques, including sculpture and printmaking.

Despite his talent, Suhail has faced numerous challenges in his career as an artist. One major obstacle has been the lack of support and recognition from the art world and the general public alike. Despite his struggles, Suhail has never given up on his dreams and continues to create beautiful art.

Suhail who is doing his BA in fine arts at University of Kashmir, while talking to the Global News Service (GNS), said that, he has a finesse in painting, sketching, clay modeling, sculpture, food, art, cake decorating, henna design, ring making, wall painting, photography, videography and art works as well.

Despite all these skills, Suhail while talking about the dark side of his talent says till now he hasn’t seen any significant response from the government or any other institution. “No doubt my art is God gifted, but people don’t see me as an artist, they still see me as a disabled man”, he says adding “In Kashmir, people fail to see a person’s talent; they only see his/her weakness.”

One of the most remarkable things about Suhail is his ability to overcome the barriers that have come every now and then. His deafness and inability to speak have not held him back from pursuing his passions and achieving success. Instead, Suhail has used these challenges as motivation to work harder and improve his skills.

Suhail’s talent and determination have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the art community. Many people have recognized the unique perspective that Suhail brings to his art, and he has received numerous accolades for his work – albeit none from any institution or government.

Suhail’s journey as an artist is a testament to the fact that anyone can achieve his/her dreams with hard work and determination. His story serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges and serves as a reminder that everyone has the potential to achieve greatness.

“If the government gives me assistance, it will increase my confidence to do more. Everyone here is out of his home to earn money for himself, and at the end of the day, I see myself on the same platform, with any help from the government or any institution. Even though I have this rare talent, unfortunately, I have never been recognized by the government, despite the fact that I have showcased a talent out of the world for many years,” says Suhail.

“If anybody has been here for me, it has only been my family. They helped me on every step of the way. If I hadn’t received their help, I wouldn’t have come up with anything,” says Suhail while requesting the Government for support.

Irfan Lone, a very close friend of Suhail and his current roommate at University of Kashmir hostel, says that Suhail is a very gentle and humble person. He has a very frank nature and he is a man of golden heart, and it is very cool to be a roommate of such a super talented person.

“The only thing I wish is that Suhail’s art must get a good platform. He is a superb artist, but he has never been appreciated. My request to the Government is to give him a good platform to showcase his talent,” says Irfan.

Suhail says he wishes to earn by his talent and wants people to know him by his talent, not by his disability, and for that purpose he wants some sort of help from the administration. (GNS)

Warren, Whitehouse lead Democrats in pressing Gensler for strong climate rule

    [ad_1]

The lawmakers say investors are demanding the information — and that Wall Street’s top regulator needs to “issue a strong climate risk disclosure rule as quickly as possible.” They called the idea of preemptively curtailing the rule’s Scope 3 and financial reporting components to head off legal risks “deeply misguided.”

“The proposed rules are necessary and overdue,” they wrote to Gensler on Sunday, adding that if the SEC waters down the plans the agency “would be failing its duty to protect investors.”

Among the others who signed the letter are Sens. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Cory Booker of New Jersey. Democratic Reps. Jerry Nadler of New York, Katie Porter of California and Chuy García of Illinois also signed on, as did Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent.

Asked for comment, an SEC spokesperson said in an email that Gensler “responds to Members of Congress directly rather than through the media.”

Now nearly a year old, the SEC’s proposal has ignited a firestorm in corporate America and among GOP lawmakers. But the Democratic concerns from Capitol Hill about the rule’s future are an early sign of the pushback that the SEC will have to face from the left if the agency elects to ease up.

The final rule will need to be approved by three of the SEC’s five commissioners, including Gensler.

Driving the proposal is the SEC’s hope of providing investors with a glimpse — through standardized data and disclosures — into how companies are tackling climate change.

The threat of litigation has hung over the SEC for months, as industry groups like the National Association of Manufacturers and several state attorneys general have warned that they may look to challenge the rule in court and on the grounds that the SEC overstepped its authority with the rule — especially in looking to include Scope 3 emissions.

Democrats see Scope 3 as pivotal to the final rule’s success.

“Not requiring Scope 3 emissions disclosures would enable [fossil fuel companies] and other companies with similar types of emissions patterns to hide the vast majority of their exposure to climate risk from regulators and investors,” the lawmakers wrote. “For many companies and sectors, a greenhouse gas inventory that omits Scope 3 would be materially misleading to investors.”

  • Raquel Welch: a strong and powerful personality with a rarely-tapped gift for comedy

Raquel Welch: a strong and powerful personality with a rarely-tapped gift for comedy

    [ad_1]

The term “sex symbol” reeks of a bygone age of smirking sexism, and very often female stars landed with this tag would be given some exotic outfit. Ursula Andress had her ivory-white bikini with chunky belt buckle in Dr No; Jane Fonda had her sleek one-piece with black stripes and thigh-length boots as the glam astronaut in Barbarella.

But the most outrageous piece of sex-symbol costuming of all time was given to Raquel Welch, who was called upon to rock a revealing doeskin two-piece in her role as Loana the Fair One in the 1966 dinosaur adventure One Million Years BC, featuring stop-motion dino action by Ray Harryhausen, and based on the less-than-scientific notion that humans and dinosaurs coexisted.

Loana was the ultrasexy cavebabe who had three lines in the film, but the poster image of Welch in this quite extraordinary outfit made her a legend. Welch became naughty-but-nice shorthand for a luscious star that blokes of all ages would secretly or not-so-secretly lust after; a sort of sitcom gag, like dads watching Top of the Pops and waiting for Pan’s People to come on.

Kenneth Branagh’s recent movie Belfast has a shot of Welch entrancing a saucer-eyed family audience in this film. And in fact, Welch became even more of a legend in Britain for a publicity stunt in 1972, when – in London to promote her British-produced western Hannie Caulder – she declared herself to be a Chelsea FC fan, dressed up in Chelsea strip for the photographers and went to a Chelsea home match against Leicester City in the itchy-bearded company of Jimmy Hill. Welch was a strong, powerful personality, who didn’t simper or blush but looked permanently amused, as if she could eat any of her admirers for breakfast.

Welch with Strother Martin, Jack Elam and Ernest Borgnine in Hannie Caulder.
Welch with Strother Martin, Jack Elam and Ernest Borgnine in Hannie Caulder. Photograph: Cinetext/Paramount/Allstar

In fact, Welch had cult-classic moments before and after her ersatz-Jurassic apotheosis. She had appeared with Frank Sinatra in a now-forgotten mystery called Lady in Cement (and in fact had a tiny appearance in the Elvis Presley film Roustabout). She had been one of the crew in the amazing sci-fi movie Fantastic Voyage, shrunk to microscopic size and sent into the body of an important scientist to repair his brain – and inevitably she had to model a figure-hugging wetsuit.

In Stanley Donen’s Bedazzled, with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, in which hapless Dudley sells his soul to the devil, Welch appears as the figure of Lilian Lust who clambers into bed with him wearing ketchup-red lingerie. Welch got no critical respect for her lead performance in the little-liked movie version of Gore Vidal’s novel Myra Breckinridge in 1970: her playing a transgender character is perhaps the least of the film’s problems.

But like so many performers stuck with the “sex symbol” job description, Welch had a gift for comedy which was sometimes indulged and sometimes not: she scored a great success with her performance as the sly Constance de Bonacieux in Richard Lester’s all-star Dumas romps The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, having a steamy indiscretion with Michael York’s D’Artagnan.

And she has real presence in James Ivory’s Hollywood Golden Age drama The Wild Party from 1975 (an influence on Damien Chazelle’s Babylon), in which she plays the loyal mistress of a has-been star who is hosting an orgy for influential moguls.

Her celebrity in the 1970s was colossal and it’s a pity that no film-maker could quite bring out of her that combination of drollery and brassy physical strength that could well have produced a tremendous comedy. But she was an icon: a sexy warrior who was more than a match for human or dinosaur.

Hungary reports strong tourism rebound in 2022

    [ad_1]

Budapest: Hungary’s tourism sector saw a strong recovery in 2022, with the number of overnight stays in the country’s commercial accommodations increasing by almost 40 percent year-on-year to nearly 40 million, the authorities said.

“The number of overnight stays was only 5 percent fewer than in 2019 before the (Covid-19) pandemic,” Zoltan Guller, Director of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, said on Monday.

Last year, revenues from commercial lodging increased by 52 percent year-on-year to 668 billion Hungarian forints ($1.86 billion), Guller added.

Overall, the capital city, Budapest, was the most popular tourist destination in Hungary, while the northeastern mountain regions of Matra and Bukk, as well as Lake Balaton, were the most frequently visited destinations among domestic travelers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Most foreign visitors to Hungary arrived from Germany, followed by the Czech Republic, Romania, the UK, and Poland.

Guller said that last year’s tourism figures were still lower than those of 2019 due to fewer visitors from the US, Russia, and China. (1 Hungarian forint = 0.0028 US dollar)
