Leaders stress on building strong institutions on Ambedkar birth anniversary

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A host of leaders paid tributes to Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, on his 132nd birth anniversary on Friday, with many recalling his efforts to uplift the marginalised sections of society and others stressing the need to build strong institutions and create an egalitarian society.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several others remembered the social reformer, economist and jurist, who went on to become the first law minister of the country.

Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet Babasaheb dedicated his life to the empowerment of the deprived and exploited sections of society. He also shared an audio clip of his earlier remarks on Ambedkar’s life.

At a ceremony in the Parliament complex, President Murmu and the prime minister were joined by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in paying floral tributes to Ambedkar. Birla called him an architect of social transformation who fostered equality, freedom, justice and brotherhood.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a floral tribute to Ambedkar in Birbhum in West Bengal. “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar sought to illuminate the nation by kindling the spark within every Indian. He laboured to create a constitution that provides justice, equality, and freedom to every citizen,” he said in a tweet.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he “respectfully remembers and salutes” him on his birth anniversary. “Along with his contribution to the making of the Constitution, his active role in building the institutions of independent India is incomparable. Babasaheb is an inspiration for all of us in building a strong India,” he added.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled a 125-ft-tall statue of Ambedkar in Hyderabad. Flower petals were showered on the statute from a helicopter. The statue was built using 360 tonnes of stainless steel and 114 tonnes of bronze, at a cost of Rs 146.50 crore.

Born in 1891 in a Dalit family in Mhow, near Indore, in the then Central Province (now Madhya Pradesh), Ambedkar rose from a humble background to become a leading voice of the marginalised people during the freedom struggle and is credited with introducing several social reforms.

BJP chief JP Nadda paid his tribute to Ambedkar at the party headquarters in Delhi. He said Prime Minister Modi is working to fulfil his dream by working for the development and prosperity of all sections of society.

However, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took a swipe at the government, saying the “culture of forcing silence” and branding people “anti-nationals” is a dangerous trend that will finish our democracy and destroy the Constitution. He recalled that Ambedkar had warned about the ills of ‘hero-worship’ or ‘Bhakti’ in the context of Indian politics.

In an article in The Telegraph, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said, “As we honour Babasaheb’s legacy today, we must remember his prescient warning that the success of the Constitution depends on the conduct of the people entrusted with the duty to govern.”

She also said the regime in power is “misusing and subverting” the institutions of the Constitution, and the people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”.

“Equality, liberty, fraternity & justice – the universal values Babasaheb Ambedkar championed, will always remain our guiding light & strength! Tributes to the architect of India’s Constitution on his birth anniversary,” said Rahul Gandhi.

BSP president Mayawati said Ambedkar laid the strong foundation of a modern India by giving an ultra-humanist and welfare Constitution. “His life struggle is a ray of hope for crores of poor, labourers, deprived and other toiling people even today,” she said.

In a tweet, she said, “Taking inspiration from him, the Bahujan Samaj Party was established on this day, 14th April, in 1984, to take forward the stalled caravan of self-respect and to unite the people who were divided on the basis of caste, which has set an example of social change and economic liberation, especially in UP.”

Addressing a gathering at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extolled Ambedkar for laying out a vision for equality and egalitarianism in society. He hailed his pursuit of higher education during the British era when not many Indians thought about getting degrees from institutions such as Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Ambedkar knew the value of education and its role in lifting society from poverty and bringing equality among people, he added.

Several other chief ministers and governors also remembered Ambedkar’s efforts to make India a developed society.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde garlanded the portrait of Ambedkar at “Varsha”, his official residence in south Mumbai, and greeted the people on the occasion. He later visited Chaitya Bhoomi, the memorial of the chief architect of the Constitution, at Dadar in central Mumbai, and paid tributes.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais tweeted, “Respectful tributes to the Architect of Indian Constitution Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary.”

Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararjan, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also paid tributes to Ambedkar.

  • Sanders serves strong cup of joe to Starbucks bigwig

Sanders serves strong cup of joe to Starbucks bigwig

    [ad_1]

Here are five takeaways from Wednesday’s hearing:

    Starbucks isn’t budging

Schultz may no longer be holding the reins, but he made clear he does not believe the company has done anything illegal in its effort to quell a unionization drive that gained steam in 2021 and rippled across hundreds of Starbucks stores in 2022.

“Starbucks Coffee Company unequivocally — and let me set the zone for this very early on — has not broken the law,” Schultz said at the outset of Wednesday’s hearing before repeating variations of that declaration numerous times throughout the proceedings.

The National Labor Relations Board is prosecuting more than 80 complaints, covering 278 unfair labor practice charges, against the company. NLRB judges have handed down a smattering of rulings that Starbucks did break federal law, though the company appears intent on appealing such decisions for as long as it takes.

“We’re confident those allegations will be proven false,” Schultz said. “Starbucks has not broken the law.”

Republicans (reluctantly) came to Starbucks’ defense

GOP members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee members were willing to go to bat for Starbucks, even though the company has allied itself with progressive causes over the years.

“There’s some irony to a non-coffee-drinking Mormon conservative defending a Democrat candidate for president and perhaps one of the most liberal companies in America,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said. “That being said, I also think it’s somewhat rich that you’re being grilled by people who have never had the opportunity to create a single job.”

(Schultz never ran for president, though he did flirt with the idea in both the 2016 and 2020 cycles. And in 2019 he said he had disaffiliated with the Democratic Party for ideological reasons.)

Romney was one of several Republicans who said they disagreed with some of Starbucks’ political stances but nonetheless felt it was being villainized by Democrats and union supporters.

Schultz: Blunt rhetoric, but no laws were broken

During the hearing, senators of both parties got Schultz to confirm a number of facts about Starbucks and its response to the unionization drive — much of which will eventually make its way into legal filings.

The former CEO confirmed that workers at unionized stores were not extended certain compensation benefits granted to non-union stores, that it has opposed having collective bargaining negotiations done over Zoom and that Schultz told one worker “if you hate the company, you could work somewhere else.”

Schultz said that Starbucks believes labor law prohibits it from unilaterally changing employee compensation at unionized stores and that the company has pushed for in-person talks out of safety concerns for managers involved — though the NLRB has argued otherwise. He also said that his comments to that worker, which were at a company event, may have been “misinterpreted” and were not intended as anti-union intimidation.

He also said that there was nothing wrong with Starbucks telling workers that it believes they would be better off without unionizing.

“We have consistently laid out our preference without breaking any law,” he said.

    Unions rile up Mullins

For the second time in a month, first-year Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) got into a spirited back-and-forth during a hearing related to unionization — this time with Sanders.

Mullin accused Sanders of being hypocritical in lambasting the wealth of Schultz and other business leaders when he himself has profited from the American system.

“If you can be a millionaire, why can’t Mr. Schultz and other CEOs be millionaires and be honest, too?”

Sanders took issue with Mullin’s estimate of his net worth and said that he had “made more misstatements in a shorter period of time than I have ever heard.”

A few weeks earlier Mullin had a testy exchange with Teamsters union President Sean O’Brien, and the senator said during that hearing that his disdain for unions was born out of personal experience with how they treated him when they attempted to organize the plumbing business he ran.

Expect to hear a lot more about the NLRB’s fairness

Starbucks has accused staffers at the labor agency of being biased against it and colluding with the union in several elections. An agency official, Rachel Dormon, went to the coffee company with concerns last year and the information she provided has helped it challenge the results of at least one union vote.

“The NLRB is facing its own credibility crisis,” said Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), the top Republican on the HELP Committee. “Are NLRB employees weaponizing the agency against American employers to benefit politically connected labor unions?”

The NLRB has denied Starbucks’ allegations, though House Education and the Workforce Chair Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) issued a subpoena last week to Dormon for information on the matter.

In the midst of Wednesday’s hearing, House Democrats revealed that the NLRB has opened an inquiry into issues surrounding the subpoena. Republicans assailed the probe as an attempt to intimidate Dormon for coming forward, and the development will likely ratchet up tensions between the NLRB and conservative lawmakers.

  • Karnataka: PM Modi makes a strong pitch for return of BJP

Karnataka: PM Modi makes a strong pitch for return of BJP

    [ad_1]

Davanagere: Making a powerful pitch for the return of the BJP government in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the people of the State where Assembly polls are due by May, to give the party a full majority for a stable government.

Stressing that fast-paced development was the need of the hour, he urged the people of Karnataka to help bring the State out of the “politics of manipulation”. The BJP wanted to make the State a driving force of developed India, while the Congress looked at it as “an ATM that fills the treasury of its leaders”, he alleged.

“Karnataka has seen a long period of opportunistic and selfish coalition governments. Karnataka has faced losses due to such governments. So, for fast-paced development of Karnataka, BJP’s full majority, and stable government is needed,” Modi said.

Addressing a mega public meeting here, he asked, “When no one gets full majority, will Karnataka be in bad shape or not? Do you want a strong and stable government or not? Do you want a government with full majority or not?

“The first job should be to bring Karnataka out of the politics of manipulation and take it forward at a fast pace,” he said.

Speaking at the rally held to mark the culmination of the BJP’s statewide ‘Vijay Sankalpa Yatre’ ahead of the Assembly polls, Modi asked the people if they wanted him to serve them and Karnataka. “If I have to serve you and do something for you, I will need BJP’s strong government in Karnataka, and you will have to make BJP win and bring in its strong government,” he asserted.

‘Vijaya Sankalpa Yatres’ had begun earlier this month from four different directions across the State, in specially-designed vehicles or “rathas”, and have covered all 224 Assembly segments.

Targeting the opposition Congress, Modi said its leaders had been “wandering with a bag of false guarantees” ahead of elections. He claimed that the promises Congress had made ahead of polls in Himachal Pradesh did not find mention in their recent budget there.

“Can we trust Congress that makes false promises? Should they be allowed to place a step inside Karnataka or should they be thrown out,” he asked, adding that people of Karnataka should be cautious and not give them an opportunity “to play their game”.

Claiming that the Congress did not have any positive agenda for the country and Karnataka, Modi alleged that the opposition party had been dreaming and even publicly saying, “Modi teri kabr kudegi” (Modi, your grave will be dug).

“But they don’t know that the people of Karnataka are saying, ‘Modi tera Kamal khilega’ (Modi, your lotus will bloom),” he said

  • Naveen, Mamata resolve to make federal structure ‘strong, permanent’

Naveen, Mamata resolve to make federal structure ‘strong, permanent’

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said they had resolved to make the federal structure of the country “strong and permanent”.

The statement came after a much-awaited meeting of the two chief ministers held at the conclusion of Banerjee’s three-day visit to Odisha.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting at Naveen Niwas — Patnaik’s residence — with Banerjee beside him, the Odisha CM said, “We resolved to make the federal structure of the country permanent and strong. There was no other political discussion.”

Banerjee seconded Patnaik and said, “I strongly support what Naveen ji said and I appreciate this. We also discussed about democratic rights and the safety of the nation.”

She also sought iron ore for industries in her state and proposed an industrial corridor between the two states.

However, speculation remained rife that the meeting was part of Banerjee’s plan to form an opposition front with regional players minus the Congress.

Earlier, both Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Uttar Pradesh’s backwards’ leader Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi party had last Friday said the two parties would stay away from both the Congress and BJP.

TMC had also announced it would hold talks with other regional parties in their bid to take on the BJP in the crucial 2024 elections though it officially continued to deny any plans for a ‘Third Front’, separate from the Congress-led broad coalition.

After Thursday’s meeting too, both the leaders skipped questions on the possibility of a third front or a regional alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“It was a courtesy meeting. There was no in-depth discussion about serious political matters. We share a very old friendship,” Patnaik said.

Banerjee thanked Patnaik for handing over two acres of land for the construction of a Bengal government guest house in Puri.

She also drew Patnaik’s attention to shortage of iron ore in Bengal and sought Odisha’s help which has the raw material for steel production in abundance.

Banerjee also proposed a Bengal-Odisha industrial corridor which will develop the economies of the two states that are connected by national highways and railway tracks.

The West Bengal CM said a Jagannath temple is being constructed in Digha coastal town.

“I have invited Naveen ji to Bengal. Our states share good relationship,” she said.

Earlier, Banerjee reached Patnaik’s residence, where the Odisha chief minister welcomed her by presenting Sri Angavastra of Lord Jagannath. He also presented a replica of the three chariots to the Trinamool Congress supremo, besides filigree work and some sweets from Odisha.

Banerjee gave a return gift of a shawl to Patnaik, and placed a jamdani saree in front of photographs of Patnaik’s parents former Odisha CM Biju Patnaik and his wife Gyan Patnaik.

Earlier, when Banerjee had reached Bhubaneswar on March 21, she had sent some sweets from West Bengal to Patnaik.
