French unions vow further protests on 10th general strike against Macron’s pension plans

PARIS — French unions vowed to continue demonstrations next week amid another day of protests Tuesday against French President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial pension reforms — the 10th general strike this year.

Clashes broke out between small groups of protesters and police, especially in Paris, where some people also ransacked a supermarket. But the number of protesters also decreased almost everywhere in the country compared to last week, according to estimates by both French authorities and unions. Around 730,000 people protested in total, compared to more than 1 million last Thursday, according to the French interior ministry. Estimates by trade union CGT, meanwhile, calculated that the number of protesters declined from 3.5 million last week to approximately 2 million on Tuesday.

But Parisians can expect some relief for their noses Wednesday when garbage collectors are set to resume work after weeks of a strike that has left piles of rubbish stacked along streets.

The protests have been running since the beginning of the year, prompted by Macron’s plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and increase the level of contributions required to receive a full pension. Discontent mounted earlier this month when the government decided to force the measures through parliament without a vote, raising concerns that the protests could turn into a broader anti-government movement like the Yellow Jackets, which brought months of unrest during Macron’s first term in office.

The strikes on Tuesday hit sectors including public transport and schools as well as energy plants and oil refineries, causing fuel shortages.

But Macron’s administration has not shown signs that it will revise the reforms. Government spokesperson Olivier Véran on Tuesday rejected a proposal by the CFDT union to put the measures on ice and find a mediator to resolve the situation.

But Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has invited union representatives to meet at the beginning of next week for talks, according to CFDT leader Laurent Berger.

“The anger begins to rise, even among the most peaceful protesters,” Berger told broadcaster TMC Tuesday evening after protests died down.

Major trade unions are still planning a further day of strikes and protests next Thursday.

Karnataka HC disallows bus transport strike scheduled to start tomorrow

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has put temporary brakes on the proposed transport strike called by a state transport corporation employees union known as the ‘Sarige Nigamagala Noukarara Samana Manskara Vedike’.

The strike in demand of wage revision, allowances and reinstatement of employees was to commence on March 24.

A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale and Justice Ashok S Kinagi, which heard a public interest litigation (PIL) against the strike call on Thursday, opined that since there are public exams going on for students across Karnataka, any strike would put their future in jeopardy. Therefore, any strike should not be allowed during this period.

Directing that no strike should be undertaken till the next date of hearing, the court adjourned the case by three weeks. Notices were ordered to be issued to the transport union in the PIL.

The indefinite strike was earlier announced by the union which represents employees from the BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC.

The PIL against the strike said it would cause unwanted suffering to the public, especially students and those in need of medical help. Since various exams are being conducted at this point of time, students will be put to trouble jeopardising their education.

The government counsel apprised the court that the state is holding meetings with the transport employees and another round is scheduled with the representatives on April 6 at 11.30 am. The court then directed that no strike should be held for the next three weeks and adjourned the hearing.

Maha govt agreeable to OPS, employees call off weeklong strike

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Following a successful round of negotiations with the Maharashtra government, around 18 lakh government employees in the state called off their weeklong indefinite strike to press for the contentious issue of implementing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), a top leader said here on Monday.

The convenor of the striking unions’ coordination committee, Vishwas Katkar, said that the state government has agreed in principle’ to consider the issue of bringing back OPS, which was discontinued in 2005 owing to various reasons.

The much-awaited discussions were held on Monday afternoon between Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, top state officials, Katkar and other union representatives.

“The government has assured that OPS will definitely be implemented, and our salaries shall not be affected. This has also been given to us in writing… They will also withdraw the show-cause notices issued to the strikers. We will also fully cooperate with the government on this issue,” Katkar told mediapersons.

In view of the positive outcome, Katkar and other leaders said that the strike has been called off with immediate effect and all employees will resume normal duties from Tuesday.

Later on Monday, Shinde informed about the development and reiterated that the government is completely positive towards the employees’ demands.

“We have constituted a committee to examine this matter and its report will be received soon, after which we shall take an appropriate decision,” Shinde said.

The Chief Minister said that all the state government and semi-government employees have been on strike since March 14, while the Maharashtra State Gazetted Officers’ Federation has given a separate notice of strike from March 28.

“After the discussions today, the employees and gazetted officers’ associations have responded positively to our appeal and have decided to withdraw their strike,” said Shinde among thumping of benches by the ruling alliance legislators.

Katkar also thanked the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for supporting the strikers and raising their issue in the legislature, and appreciated the government for positively considering the staffers’ pending demand on OPS.

From Tuesday, all government, semi-government offices, schools, junior colleges, government hospitals and other departments where Class III-IV employees had gone on strike are expected to resume normal functioning.

Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A groom and his family members had to walk 28 kilometres to reach the bride’s village in Odisha’s Rayagada district for the wedding, as they could not arrange a vehicle due to the drivers’ strike.

They walked all night on Thursday from Sunakhandi panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block to reach Dibalapadu village where they tied the knot on Friday.

A video showing the groom and his family members including a few women walking at night went viral on social media.

“No transport was available due to the drivers’ strike. We walked all night to reach the village. We had no other option,” one of the groom’s family members said.

The marriage was solemnised on Friday morning. But the groom and his family members stayed at the bride’s house, waiting for the drivers’ association to withdraw the strike so that they can return home.

The Driver Ekta Mahasangh has launched the indefinite strike across the state from Wednesday demanding social welfare measures like insurance, pension, formation of a welfare board and others.

The strike by the drivers of commercial vehicles in Odisha was on Friday put on hold for 90 days following an assurance by the state government that all their demands would be fulfilled.

The announcement by the Drivers’ Ekta Mahasangh came barely a few hours after Chief Secretary P K Jena and DGP S K Bansak appealed to the striking drivers to withdraw the stir.

The strike by over two lakh drivers has hit the normal life for which people including office goers and tourists remained standard at different places. This has also resulted in price rise of essential commodities.

Hyderabad: BSP state chief detained amid hunger strike over TSPSC paper leak

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Telangana chief RS Praveen Kumar was taken into custody by the Telangana police on Friday ahead of his indefinite hunger strike over the leak of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Assistant Engineer (civil) exam paper.

The BSP supremo was holding an indefinite hunger strike at his party office on Lakdikapul when the police took him into custody.

Praveen Kumar had demanded that the group I exams be cancelled and the investigation into the leak be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

In a statement on Wednesday Kumar had stated that he was giving the state government 48 hours to hand over the case to the central agency or he would take up a fast onto death.

Demanding that the TSPSC chairman Janadhanan redyy step down immediately, he stated that he would write to the President and Gocernot over the same.

He also questioned Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and state IT minister KT Rama Rao’s silence on the same.

“All the examinations held during Janardhan Reddy’s tenure should be cancelled and re-conducted. TSPSC has lost the trust of Telangana people. Details of candidates who have crossed 100 marks in Group 1 Prelims should be disclosed,” said Praveen Kumar.

The BSP leader also alleged that the government was attempting to wash its hands of the case by handing it over to an SIT and terming the leak as a technical error.
