New Delhi: India on Tuesday evacuated the first batch of 278 Indians from Sudan onboard naval ship INS Sumedha and rushed in essential relief supplies for its remaining stranded citizens as ceasefire appeared to be holding in the strife-torn African country.

The Indian Navy’s second ship, INS Teg, arrived in Port Sudan to bring back more people under New Delhi’s mission ‘Operation Kaveri’ that has been launched to evacuate around 3,000 Indians from Sudan, officials said.

India has set up a control room in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah to facilitate evacuation of Indians from Sudan.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan has reached Jeddah to oversee the evacuation mission.

“First batch of stranded Indians leave Sudan under #OperationKaveri. INS Sumedha with 278 people onboard departs Port Sudan for Jeddah,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted.

From Jeddah, India is set to bring back the Indians home in military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

In another tweet, Bagchi said INS Teg also joined the evacuation mission.

“INS Teg joins #OperationKaveri. Arrives at Port Sudan with additional officials and essential relief supplies for stranded Indians. Will boost ongoing evacuation efforts by Embassy Camp Office at Port Sudan,” he said.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last 12 days that has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

India stepped up its efforts to evacuate the Indians from Sudan as a 72-hour truce was agreed to between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following intense negotiations.

The Indian Navy said its mission deployed warship INS Sumedha was diverted for evacuation of the citizen’s stranded in Sudan.

Referring to the evacuation mission, Muraleedharan said necessary infrastructure is in place in both Port Sudan and Jeddah.

“Upon arrival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to join Team #OperationKaveri, visited the control room set up to facilitate evacuation of Indians from Sudan,” he said on Twitter.

“Necessary infrastructure is in place in both Port Sudan and Jeddah. Team is in full readiness on the ground,” he added.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday announced launch of the mission to evacuate ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back the stranded Indians from Sudan that has been witnessing fierce fighting following a power struggle between the regular army and a paramilitary force.

India on Sunday said it has positioned two transport aircraft of the IAF in Jeddah and naval ship INS Sumedha at Port Sudan as part of its contingency plans to evacuate the Indians.

Apart from the Sudanese authorities, the MEA and the Indian embassy in Sudan have been in regular touch with the UN, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and US among others.

At a high-level meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had issued directions for preparation of contingency plans to evacuate Indians from Sudan.

After the meeting, the PMO said Modi instructed officials to prepare contingency evacuation plans, accounting for the rapidly shifting security landscape in Sudan and the viability of various options.

Last week, Jaishankar spoke to his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt on the ground situation in Sudan with a focus on ensuring the safety of the Indians.

On Thursday, Jaishankar discussed the situation in Sudan with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

88 trains cancelled, hundreds of vehicles stranded amid protest for ST status

    [ad_1]

Jhargram: Eighty-eight trains were cancelled, and hundreds of vehicles remained stranded as different organisations of the Kurmi community continued their rail and road blockade in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday, demanding ST status, officials said.

The protest started at 6 am on Tuesday with the blockade of the old National Highway 6, which connects Kolkata to Mumbai, at Khemasuli in Kharagpur local police station area by Kurmi Samaj West Bengal, they said.

Another organisation of the community, Adivasi Kurmi Samaj, joined the protest on Wednesday, blocking the railway tracks at Khemasuli station in the Kharagpur-Tatanagar section and Kustaur station in the Adra-Chandil section in Purulia district, they added.

Among the trains cancelled on Thursday were Howrah-Pune Duronto Express, Howrah-Jagdalpur Express, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, Howrah-Ahmedabad Express, Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Howrah-Ranchi Express, Shalimar-LTT Express, Howrah-Mumbai CSMT Mail and Santragachi-Rani Kamlapati Humsafar Express, the South Eastern Railway said in a statement.

Puri-New Delhi Express, Mumbai-CSTM-Howrah Duronto Express and Jagdalpur-Howrah Express were also cancelled, it said.

Fifty nine express, and passenger trains scheduled for Friday and four trains scheduled for Saturday have also been cancelled, the press statement said.

On Wednesday, 46 express and passenger trains were cancelled due to the agitation.

“As a result of the agitation, a total of 223 trains have been cancelled since Wednesday,” it added. Eight trains have been short-terminated.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on NH 6, triggering massive traffic snarls even on the adjoining roads in Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts.

Officials said some vehicles were being diverted through Balibhasha in Jhargram to bypass the blockade.

Drivers of the stranded vehicles said they were facing food and water scarcity.

The organisation of the Kurmi community, which is classified as OBC at present, are protesting in different districts of the state, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Purulia, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur.

The Paschim Medinipur district administration officials held a meeting with the agitating organisations on Wednesday but ‘failed’ to reach a settlement.

“The blockade will continue until our demands are met,” said Tapas Mahato, a Kurmi Samaj West Bengal leader.

Gangtok: Army personnel rescued around 400 tourists stranded in Sikkim following heavy snowfall and later provided emergency assistance, including medical care and food, to them, defence officials said on Sunday.

Defence spokesman Lt. Col Mahendra Rawat said that around 400 tourists, including 142 women and 50 children travelling approximately in 100 vehicles got stranded on Saturday afternoon while returning from Natu La and Tsomgo (Changgu) Lake and soldiers of Trishakti Corps, in collaboration with police and civil administration, swung into action and launched rescue mission “Operation Himrahat”.

“The relief and rescue operations continued through late on Saturday night. The tourists were moved to safe areas and provided shelter, warm clothing, medical aid and hot meals. The troops arranged accommodation for the stay of all the tourists,” Lt. Col Rawat said.

He said that on Sunday morning, the road opening was taken up with assistance of the Army’s General Reserve Engineering Force bulldozers and by 9 a.m, the road was cleared to enable movement of the vehicles to Gangtok.

The quick reaction by the troops provided relief and comfort to the stranded tourists under inclement weather conditions and ensured early clearance of road to enable movement of vehicles to Gangtok. The stranded tourists and civil administration expressed their deep gratitude for the immediate relief provided by the Army.

  • Highway remains closed, around 1000 vehicles stranded: Officials

    [ad_1]

Says No Fresh Traffic To Be Allowed On Thoroughfare Tomorrow

Srinagar, Feb 10 (GNS): Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed on Friday, leaving over 1000 light and heavy motor vehicles stranded on the thoroughfare, officials said.

They said that the highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, remained closed since last night due to mudslides, shooting stones at Cafeteria, Mehar and Panthyal.

“The highway is still blocked. The MeT department has already predicted heavy rainfall for tomorrow (Saturday). People are advised not to travel on the highway without confirmation from TCUs (Traffic control units),” a traffic department official told GNS.

Due to heavy rainfall, mudslides at Cafeteria-Mehar, Ramban and shooting stones at Panthyal and other locations, he said, approximately 1000 vehicles, both HMVs and LMVs, are stranded on the strategic road.

“Tomorrow on 11-02-20232, if weather permits, only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move to their destinations, subject to traffic worthy road conditions,” he added.

The Mughal road, which connects Shopian district of Kashmir with Poonch district of Jammu division, as well as Srinagar-Leh highway are already closed for traffic for this winter. (GNS)

  • Farmers block railway tracks in Punjab, trains stranded

Farmers block railway tracks in Punjab, trains stranded

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: Members of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee on Sunday squatted on railway tracks in Punjab to demand a legal guarantee on MSP and withdrawal of cases registered against farmers during the farm laws stir, among other things.

The blockade from 1 pm to 4 pm disrupted the movement of trains on several routes including Amritsar-Delhi, Amritsar-Khemkaran and on the Jalandhar-Jammu rail section, according to official sources.

In Amritsar district, hundreds of agitating farmers led by Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) leader Sarwan Singh Pandher squatted on the Amritsar-New Delhi railway track in Jandiala town, nearly 25 km from Amritsar.

Pandher said the farmers blocked railway tracks from 1 pm to 4 pm at 13 places in 11 districts of Punjab.

The protesters also blocked railway tracks on Amritsar-Delhi, Amritsar-Khemkaran, and Amritsar-Pathankot routes besides those in Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Moga, Muktsar, Mansa, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana districts.

In Hoshiarpur, the blockade was on the Jalandhar-Jammu rail section at the Tanda railway station.

According to the official sources, train no. 12920 Malwa Superfast Express and Superfast Jammu-Mumbai train were stranded at Dasuya and Bhangala railway stations respectively due to the rail blockade.

The protesters are also seeking stringent action against those who had allegedly attacked a group of farmers during the agitation against the now-repealed farm laws at Delhi’s Singhu border in January 2021.

  • Stranded seal pup rescued after being spotted outside kebab shop in Norfolk

Stranded seal pup rescued after being spotted outside kebab shop in Norfolk

    [ad_1]

A seal pup has been rescued after it was spotted wandering past an arcade and kebab shop in Norfolk.

Marine and Wildlife Rescue was called to the scene at 11pm on Friday after the organisation was sent pictures of the grey seal pup outside Istanbul Delight kebab shop in Hemsby, hundreds of metres inland.

“We spoke to a couple of people that were milling around there and thought it was a wind-up, they were like: ‘No, you won’t find a seal around here mate,,” Dan Goldsmith, chair of the Great Yarmouth-based rescue centre, said.

“After searching the area for some time, we eventually found the seal shuffling along on a path outside an amusement arcade called the Mirage.

“The pup must have just been looking for some shelter, but got disoriented and kept heading inland.”

Goldsmith, 38, said the juvenile marine mammal was in good health and he and a colleague loaded it on to a stretcher to carry it back to the beach.

He added that such sightings of seals inland are becoming more common as a result of surging populations in the UK in recent years.

“This was more the unusual end of what we do, but this is becoming more of a common occurrence … we responded to one the day before funnily enough, it was out on a road quite a few miles inland,” Goldsmith said.

“I remember 20 years ago we didn’t get hardly any calls about seals, maybe two a week … I get probably at peak times 15-20 calls for different seals a day at the minute.”

Grey seal numbers in the UK dropped as low as 500 in the early 20th century, but there are now estimated to be 120,000 – and it is this population boom, coupled with the recent pupping season, that Goldsmith said is behind the rise in sightings.

Goldsmith, from Gorleston-on-Sea, warned those spotting seal pups inland not to approach them and to call for expert help.

“We do get people that mean really well, that want to help and they’ve done things in the past but have been injured,” he said.

“Call a rescue organisation like us to assess because we’re used to working with them.

“They’re very quick and responsive … and they can look very docile and friendly, but they’re not, they are really quite hostile things.”
