Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was questioning Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy for the second consecutive day on Thursday in former minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.
Avinash Reddy, who was grilled for about eight hours on Wednesday, appeared before the agency at its regional office here at 10.30 a.m.
The CBI officials were also questioning Avinash Reddy’s father Y. S. Bhaskar Reddy and another accused Uday Kumar Reddy for a second day. The duo was brought from Chanchalguda Jail to the CBI office.
On the first day, the CBI officials had questioned them separately and it is not clear if Avinash Reddy will be questioned in the presence of his father and Uday Kumar Reddy.
The CBI team is gathering information from the accused about the reasons for the murder, events of the day when the crime was committed and their movements on the day.
Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has to appear daily before the CBI till April 25, as per the direction of the Telangana High Court.
This was the fifth time that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP appeared before the CBI.
The Telangana High Court had on Tuesday directed the CBI not to arrest Avinash Reddy till April 25.
In its interim order on anticipatory bail petition of the MP, the court directed him to appear before the CBI daily till April 25.
The CBI had summoned Avinash Reddy for questioning on April 17 but the agency twice deferred the questioning due to hearing of his anticipatory bail petition.
The final order on the anticipatory bail plea will be delivered on April 25.
On Tuesday, the CBI sent Bhaskar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy to CBI custody for six days. They will be questioned every day between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16 while his follower Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.
Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.
The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.
The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.
The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year after Suneetha Reddy raised doubts about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh.
With the Supreme Court setting April 30 as the deadline for the CBI to complete its investigation, the agency has expedited the probe with the arrest of Bhaskar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy and questioning of Avinash Reddy.
BERLIN — German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is heading to China to represent Berlin, but she’ll likely have more explaining to do about Paris in the wake of French President Emmanuel Macron’s explosive comments on Taiwan.
As Baerbock embarked on her two-day visit Wednesday evening, officials in Berlin were eager to stress that Germany and the EU care about Taiwan and stability in the region, arguing it’s mainly China that must contribute to de-escalation by refraining from aggressive military maneuvers close to the island nation.
Baerbock’s trip comes amid international backlash against Macron’s comments in an interview with POLITICO, arguing Europe should avoid becoming America’s follower, including on the matter of Taiwan’s security. Although German government spokespeople refused to comment directly on the French president’s remarks, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry specifically called out Beijing when expressing “great concern” over the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
“We expect all parties in the region to contribute to peace. That applies equally to the People’s Republic of China,” the spokesperson said, adding: “And it seems to us that actions such as military threatening gestures are counter to that goal and, in fact, increase the risk of unintended military clashes.”
Nils Schmid, the foreign policy spokesperson for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), said he expects Baerbock to “set the record straight” during her trip to China, which will involve meetings with Beijing’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Vice President Han Zheng and top diplomat Wang Yi.
“We clearly defined in the [government] coalition agreement that we need a changed China policy because China has changed. The chancellor made that clear during his visit. Above all, Scholz also issued clear warnings about Taiwan during his visit [last year],” Schmid wrote in a tweet. “I assume that Foreign Minister Baerbock will repeat exactly that and thus set the record straight and make a clarification after Macron’s botched visit.”
Berlin traditionally has been much more in sync with the U.S. on foreign and security policy than France has, which is why many politicians and officials in the German capital reacted with horror to Macron’s comments. The French president said Europe should not take its “cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction,” suggesting the EU stood between the two sides, rather than being aligned with its longtime democratic partners in Washington.
Macron gave the impression to some in the U.S. that Europeans see Beijing and Washington as “equidistant” from Brussels in terms of values and as allies, said SPD foreign policy lawmaker Metin Hakverdi, who is currently on a parliamentary visit to the U.S.
“That was foolish,” Hakverdi told POLITICO, adding that “Macron potentially damaged the peaceful status quo around Taiwan” by giving “the public impression that Europe has no particular interest in the conflict over Taiwan.
“The issue of Taiwan is not an internal matter for the People’s Republic of China. Anything else would virtually invite Beijing to attack Taiwan,” Hakverdi added. “I am confident that our foreign minister will make that clear during her trip to Asia — both to Beijing and to our Asian partners.”
Katja Leikert from the main German opposition party, the center-right CDU, criticized Macron’s comments as “extremely short-sighted,” and added: “Should China decide to strike Taiwan militarily, either by invading it or by starting a maritime blockade, this would have significant political and economic repercussions for us. We cannot just wish that away.
“What we actually need to do right now is strengthen our defense against aggressive measures from Beijing,” Leikert said.
For Berlin, Macron’s comments also come at a particularly bad moment for transatlantic ties. The German government is keen to mend cracks in its relationship with Washington that have emerged over the controversial benefits for U.S. businesses under Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. Europe hopes to reach an agreement so that its own companies may also be eligible for these subsidies.
Macron’s comments “will not help in renegotiations on the Inflation Reduction Act, nor will they help Joe Biden in the election campaign against populist Republican candidates,” said the SPD’s Hakverdi.

The German foreign ministry spokesperson was quick to stress that both France and Germany were involved in shaping a joint EU-China policy, which was also done in cooperation “with our transatlantic partner.”
During her trip to China, Baerbock plans to raise the situation in the Taiwan Strait; Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine; the human rights situation in China; as well as the fight against climate crisis, the spokesperson said.
Baerbock’s foreign ministry is also currently drafting Germany’s first China strategy. A draft of this seen by POLITICO last year vowed to take a much harder line toward Beijing. Baerbock and her Green party are at the forefront of pushing such a tougher position, while Scholz has long preferred a softer approach.
Incidentally, however, the German government said Wednesday it is reassessing whether to potentially take a firmer stance and ban Chinese state company Cosco from going through with a highly controversial move to buy parts of a Hamburg port terminal.
Scholz had strongly pushed for the port deal ahead of his own trip to Beijing last year, but the future of the transaction is now in doubt after German security authorities classified the terminal as “critical infrastructure.”

New Delhi: The proceedings in Parliament were disrupted for the third straight day on Wednesday as the political slugfest between the BJP and the Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s democracy remarks and the Adani issue intensified and the opposition parties took to the streets.
The BJP stepped up the ante against Gandhi, saying India’s democracy is not in peril but the Congress party has been brought to “political perish” by the people while the opposition party escalated its offensive, accusing the government of “undermining and weakening” democracy in the country by stalling Parliament to save a businessman.
The Congress along with several other opposition parties also took out a protest march from Parliament House to hand over a complaint to the Enforcement Directorate on the Adani issue. However, they were stopped by the police at Vijay Chowk.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the police did not allow the opposition MPs of around 18 parties to march in protest and present their case for a detailed investigation into the Adani issue.
Later, opposition leaders emailed a letter to ED Director S K Mishra. The parties told the probe agency that “it cannot turn around and abdicate its jurisdiction”.
The letter was signed by leaders of the Congress, CPI, CPI-M, JDU, SS (UBT), RJD, DMK, JMM, AAP, IUML, VCK, Kerala Congress and others.
The logjam continued in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
In Lok Sabha, opposition members stormed into the Well of the House, raising placards and slogans, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani matter while the BJP slammed Rahul, accusing him of insulting India and cast aspersion against the Speaker of the House.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla repeatedly urged the members to return to their seats and allow the house to run.
“This house is meant for holding discussions and dialogues. Let’s talk about policy and have a good discussion on issues related to public welfare. If we want people’s welfare and consider this house a temple of democracy, I will request that at least don’t comment on this house,” Birla said.
“It is not right to comment, either inside (the house) or outside. Talk about issues and policy here. It is not right to bring placards like this here. I am warning you. This is wrong,” he said.
Rajya Sabha proceedings were also disrupted amid uproar over the BJP’s demand for Gandhi’s apology for his “democracy under attack” remark made in London.
Both houses have failed to transact business so far in the second leg of the Budget session of Parliament that began on Monday.
Gandhi, during his recent UK visit, had alleged that the structures of Indian democracy were under “brutal attack” and there was a full-scale assault on the country’s institutions.
His remarks triggered a massive political row, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions and the Congress hitting back, citing instances of Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising internal politics abroad.
Outside the Parliament also, the BJP kept the heat on Rahul Gandhi with Union minister Smriti Irani saying India’s democracy is not in peril but the Congress party has been brought to “political perish” by the people for the kind of behaviour its leader (Rahul Gandhi) exhibited overseas,
Gandhi’s grudge with Prime Minister Modi has taken the shape of a grudge with India, she charged, demanding that the Wayanad MP of the Congress apologise to Parliament for his remarks.
Addressing a press conference, Irani alleged that “at the feet of India’s colonial past” Gandhi lamented the “lack of foreign intervention” in India’s democracy. This is to bring to a halt India’s resilient growth story under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, she said.
She said the “lies that became a foundation of the Congress leader’s conversation in England” were many.
At the last gridiron he attended in 2018, Pence found himself as the punchline, not its deliverer. Trump, who had agreed to speak that year, took aim at Pence: “I really am proud to call him the apprentice.” Trump told the crowd that to prepare, he had talked to some “of the funniest people around the White House, starting with my No. 2: Mike Pence! Oh, I love you, Mike. Some of you may think that Mike is not a comedian, but he is one of the best straight men you’re ever going to meet. … He is straight!”
Pence sat with Karen to Trump’s left, red-faced and seemingly embarrassed by his boss’ potshot
Since then Pence has struggled to emerge from Trump’s shadow. In recent months, he has done more than perhaps any of his GOP competitors to distinguish himself from Trump — on his actions on January 6, on his wobbling support for aid for Ukraine, on not committing to backing Trump as the nominee.
Pence is not the first national politician who has struggled to let his full self into public view. There was Mitt Romney, who popular culture and commentators portrayed as stilted and awkward in his 2012 presidential bid. But Greg Whiteley’s 2014 Netflix documentary “Mitt” revealed him in more intimate moments as a mischievous wit. And Bob Dole, the former presidential candidate from Kansas, had a dust bowl-dry sense of humor that didn’t always register. Pence, for his part, is well aware of the Dole parallel, according to Atterholt, who has urged Pence to let his more gregarious self shine through. “Here’s a situation where these attributes are extremely flattering, and they’re unfortunately hidden,” he told me.
It’s doubtful Pence would ever try a Sununu-style roast of Trump. But can he dial up the heat, even a little? After all this is a guy who went out of his way to celebrate the creator of Garfield on the House floor. Garfield!
But for this humor gambit to actually work, Pence will have to embrace it and not just at a single inside-the-Beltway event. Whether Pence can let the world see this authentically goofy and charming part of his life story could be a decisive factor in how he fares in the up close and personal crucible of campaigning in early primary states such as Iowa. For a man who improvised his way through thousands of hours of calls from radio listeners, who can dash off a compelling caricature of a new acquaintance in a matter of seconds, who can deadpan his way through a speech on the stump, it’s not impossible to imagine that person doing well in a presidential campaign.
Can Mike Pence become the candidate Americans want to have a non-alcoholic beer with? That is a question only Pence can answer, Atterholt told me. “It’s not his staff who is holding him back,” he said.
Last November, in a Raleigh hotel conference room, at the end of an interview with Pence, I asked Pence to give me a taste of his vaunted “Dubya” imitation.
“Well, you got to be in the moment,” Pence demurred.
“You got to give him two minutes,” Marc Short, his longtime senior adviser, urged Pence. “Tell him the story of you going to the immigration meeting.”
Pence conceded and told me a story about going to the Oval Office to meet Bush during the immigration reform debate in 2006, during which Pence had co-authored a guest-worker proposal that was going to be part of the final package.
“President said, ‘Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?” Pence recounted, nailing W.’s Crawford, Texas, twang. “Well, I noticed you’re not exactly from a border state,” Pence’s W. continued. It was legitimately funny. But despite the laughs he got, Pence didn’t milk the moment. He quickly dropped the mimicry and shifted back to his more familiar earnest mode.
We soon said our goodbyes and then he ducked out to a donor lunch, and then a Senate campaign event.
I haven’t seen much evidence of his lighter side since that encounter. But he’s got a show Saturday night.

Valentine’s Day was earlier this week and while I don’t personally observe Valentine’s Day, I do appreciate that it usually provides a few morsels of tasty gossip. We get to see defiant social media posts about being newly single, sweet posts about new sparks and of course – people soft and hard launching new relationships.
Often Instagram related, “soft launching” a new relationship means that you post a picture that shows you’re with a new someone, but with no identifying features. It’s a photo of two wine glasses and someone else’s arm in the frame. It’s a blurry, dark photo taken in bed, as if you’ve started dating someone who is also in witness protection. A “hard launch” is explicit. It’s the couple kissing, or a full-face photo (tagged) and some love heart emojis. Or perhaps a water emoji. There’s no room for doubt.
This Valentine’s Day we got the special treat of a celebrity hard launch.
If you aren’t aware of these two, I’ll give you a quick rundown. Eric André is a successful comedian and actor known for his alt-absurdist comedy. Emily Ratajkowski first came to prominence appearing in the controversial Blurred Lines music video and has a successful modelling career. She’s also released a book, and published a well-received essay about her experience fighting to own her image. She’s good friends with rising comedy star Ziwe, so she’s probably funny in her own right.
They are two successful people, so why has this caused such a stir online? Well, it’s because people’s minds are blown that she is one of the most beautiful women in the world – and he is Eric André. Although obviously many people find him attractive (he is!), lots of people are finding it necessary to point out that he’s maybe not quite on her level, looks wise.
Luckily for Eric it doesn’t matter either way. This is because he is a graduate of the School of Being Funny Enough That Hot Babes Like You. I very much relate to this, and can also speak to this, because I am a fellow alum.
For context, I am a fat lesbian (shock!), so I am not what is considered a traditionally attractive woman. Before I go on here, my girlfriend has insisted that I have to tell you all that “I am hot”. However, for most of my life it was made clear to me by society how unlikely it was that I would ever find people who were attracted to me. I believed it for a really long time. Luckily – or perhaps mindfully as a way to cope – I became funny. I developed a good personality and varied interests. I am nice. This, shockingly, was enough. Cool and interesting people started wanting to go on dates with me, they like hanging out with me – and sometimes they’ve even fallen in love with me!
It turns out that a lot of what women want is an interesting and/or funny person to talk to. If that person will also listen to them and care about them as a human being and treat them like one, you’re on to a winning formula. As a whole, I think women are far more accepting and able to enjoy different body types and levels of attractiveness in their partners and I don’t think this is a quality appreciated enough by men. Because I am fat, I know that my romantic life would probably be a lot harder if I had to find straight men who wanted to date me. But I don’t, I get to date women. And so do straight men!
Even though it’s a pretty damn good deal, there’s a not-insignificant amount of men who still insist on focusing on the wrong things. Instead of looking at pairings like this and seeing that women are clearly dating men because they are funny, smart and ambitious, and deciding to work on themselves so that they become more appealing, there’s still a lot of men who treat dating women like some sort of machiavellian scheme.
Straight men need to get the message. They should stop listening to other men who clearly despise women, like Andrew Tate, and take a page out of the book of men like André, or Pete Davidson. Davidson is another funny guy with his own vibe who dates a slew of beautiful and successful women, often to the confusion of other men. But look at them and take notes – it’s not that complicated. Women just need you to not be threatened by their success, to be fun, and to treat them nicely, or even just normally.
Even if you’re not the hottest person around, women don’t need to be tricked into dating you, or controlled into enjoying your company, or talked into spending time with you. I have seen a lot of men respond to this argument by saying “but Eric André is famous and rich, it’s not the same!” This is correct, but I would guess that Em Rata is richer than him. If she wanted to, she could (and has) dated men who are richer than both of them put together and also incredibly classically good looking. But instead, she is now dating a cool guy who makes her laugh. I don’t mean that every man needs to be a professional comedian, but it’s always going to work out better for you if you try to be a fun and interesting person, or at the very least a genuinely interested person.
Become a person you like, and chances are you’ll find people who like you too.
