Battlelines over ‘Kerala Story’ harden as legal notice on ban is sent by filmaker

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Amidst a raging controversy over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announced ban on the screening of the controversial film ‘The Kerala Story’ in the state, political battlelines hardened over the decision.

This happened as filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri on Tuesday said he has sent a legal notice to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for defaming his movie “The Kashmir Files”.

The BJP continued to maintain the move was aimed at appeasing the minority, while a right-wing cultural organiation which had been promoting viewership complained of high handedness by the state government.

    MS Education Academy

The TMC for its part defended the move which it termed as one which ensured communal harmony in the state, which its rivals in the saffron camp were trying to disrupt.

By banning the film, TMC has proven it follows a policy of appeasement, despite all talk of freedom of expression, BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said.

“The film is against terrorism and Islamic State. The film exposes their modus operandi. This (ban) has been brought to appease a section of the minority community,” Ghosh told PTI Tuesday.

Sagnik Sengupta, a spokesperson of Voice of Hindustan, a right-wing cultural organisation which has been promoting watching the film in large numbers, told PTI “we protest the decision of the West Bengal government to take away the right of citizens to watch the film … Once The Kerala Story was cleared by the Censor Board, this government has no right to unilaterally stop its screening”.

TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar however told PTI that “the BJP and RSS have an agenda of disrupting communal and social harmony and ties by promoting the Kerala Story”.
While the film’s makers’ have claimed to the authorities that “the film was fictional, outside the police station and courtroom they are claiming it was entirely based on real life incidents of conversion,” Majumdar said.

On the other hand, CPM central committee member Sujan Chakraborty maintained to PTI the banning of the film will strengthen the hands of BJP and right wing forces.

“Kerala Story carries a false propaganda about conversions of thousands of Hindu women, banning the film after its release was a wrong decision as it will raise interest about the film which can now be watched on internet-based platforms over which the state doesn’t have any control,” Chakraborty said.

Banerjee on Monday ordered a ban on the screening of “The Kerala Story” in the state to avoid “any incident of hatred and violence,” according to officials.

Agnihotri said he had sent the legal notice along with his actor-wife Pallavi Joshi and producer Abhishek Agarwal.

He shared a copy of the document in his Twitter post.

“I have, along with @AbhishekOfficl & Pallavi Joshi, sent a LEGAL NOTICE to the Chief Minister, Bengal @MamataOfficial for her false & highly defamatory statements made with malafide intention to defame us & our films #TheKashmirFiles & upcoming 2024 film #TheDelhiFiles,” the filmmaker tweeted.

Directed by Sudipto Sen, “The Kerala Story” on women being forcefully converted and recruited by the terror group Islamic State (IS), released on May 5 to a huge political debate. It has been made tax free in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, while multiplexes in Tamil Nadu have cancelled its screenings.

INOX Regional Director Amitava Guha Thakurta told PTI “the film was being screened in 100 audi units of INOX across West Bengal with around 70-80 per cent occupancy on an average on two weekend days.”

“Once we got the notice from the government, we suspended the remaining night shows and refunded the money to the audience,” he said.

Satadip Saha, the distributor of the film, also confirmed to PTI, the screening has been stopped.

Patna: Union Minister Giriraj Singh Tuesday urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to declare the film ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free in Bihar.

The film, directed by Sudipto Sen, has been declared tax-free in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh among other states.

The union minister on Tuesday wrote to the Bihar CM urging to make the movie tax-free in the state.

    MS Education Academy

“The recently released movie ‘The Kerala Story’ is very important and based on contemporary social issues. The movie has already been declared tax-free in several states including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh etc. So I request you to give necessary instructions to the authorities concerned to make it tax-free in Bihar as well,” Singh said in his letter.

He also shared the letter on his Twitter handle.

The film ‘The Kerala Story’ has been at the center of a controversy since it was released last week. BJP leaders have supported the film and urged other states to follow suit. The West Bengal government announced a ban on the film on Monday to “maintain peace” and avoid any incident of hate crime and violence.

‘The Kerala Story’, which stars Adah Sharma, highlights the issue of alleged forced conversion and radicalisation of women in Kerala, which sparked controversy as soon as its trailer was released. Sen and producer, Vipul Amrutlal have said that the film is based on true events.

  • SC agrees to examine a plea against ‘The Kerala Story’ on May 15

SC agrees to examine a plea against ‘The Kerala Story’ on May 15

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear, on May 15, a plea against the Kerala High Court’s refusal to stay the film “The Kerala Story” – the fourth time when the apex court would consider the plea related to the movie.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha, agreed to examine the matter on Monday after a plea for urgent hearing was mentioned before the bench by senior advocate Kapil Sibal on behalf of the petitioners.

The plea challenged the May 5 order passed by the high court declining any relief, saying there was nothing offensive against Islam or Muslims in the film.

    MS Education Academy

Meanwhile, it is learnt that producers of the movie have moved a petition in the apex court challenging the ban on the film by the West Bengal government and also the decision not to release the film in theatres in Tamil Nadu. The plea has claimed that it is against artistic freedom. They are likely to mention the matter on Wednesday for urgent hearing.

On the day of the release of the film, the Kerala High Court, while hearing petitions seeking the ban of the film, categorically, in the midst of the hearing, pointed out that in a secular state like Kerala, nothing is going to happen.

“Nothing is going to happen if the film is screened in Kerala. On examining the teaser and the preview of the film, there is nothing which is against any religion and Islam is not portrayed in poor light. There is a reference to IS and, in the country, there have been several films which refer to IS,” said the court.

“Fail to understand how this film would be against society as even the Censor Board has given the certification. The premise of the film is fictional in nature and when fictional themes have been cleared in the past, how can one prevent the screening of this film,” it asked.

The apex court had, as many as three times, rejected a plea to stop the release of the film, saying that it must also be considered that a filmmaker invests a lot of money and time in making a film and actors also put in a lot of work.

The film, produced by Sunshine Pictures Private Ltd and directed by Sudipto Sen, was released on Friday across the country.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that ‘The Kerala Story’ will be declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh.

“‘The Kerala Story’ will be made tax-free in the state,” the Chief Minister tweeted in Hindi on Tuesday.

Reacting to the UP government’s decision, deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, “Making ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free is a very good decision. I want the people of Uttar Pradesh to watch this film and understand how our sisters have suffered. We will also go and watch the film.

    MS Education Academy

“The people in West Bengal will not accept the ban on this film.”

‘The Kerala Story’, helmed by Sudipto Sen, claims to portray the story of some women from the state who were converted to Islam and recruited by terror outfit IS.

This comes a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee decided to ban the movie, citing “threat to law and order in the state”.

Uttar Pradesh has become the second state after Madhya Pradesh to make the controversial film tax-free.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several BJP leaders on Monday watched a show of ‘The Kerala Story’ at a cinema hall in walled city with a number of female students from the Delhi University, invited by them, among the viewers.

The media relations department of the party’s state unit had booked an exclusive show at Delite cinema hall in Daryaganj.

The exclusive show was attended by Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, state president Virendra Sachdeva, and former Union minister Harsh Vardhan.

    MS Education Academy

The politicians were joined in the screening by members of ABVP, the RSS student wing, a group of DU girl students, some local traders, and members of press, the Delhi BJP said in a statement.

Sachdeva claimed the film to be based on Kerala women who were “forced love jihad and conversion victims.”

It raises awareness against dangers of “love jihad” across the country, he said.

The film which has been mired in controversy even before its release has been directed by Sudipto Sen and has been boycotted in several districts of Kerala, and across Tamil Nadu by theatre owners.

The central claim of the film that 3,200 women from Kerala joined ISIS remains unsubstantiated. The producers of the film even removed the claim from all its social media posts after it was asked to do so by Kerala High Court. The film was released on May 5.

The state BJP has asked the Delhi AAP government to exempt the film from entertainment tax and hold its special screenings for girls in the 15-16 age group.

In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor had asked him to watch the film, claiming the film was based on the “serious issue of love jihad”, “religious conversion” and pushing innocent girls into “terrorism.”

Junior home minister G Krishna Reddy had in 2020 informed parliament that the term ‘love jihad’ is not defined in law, and no police cases have been filed under it.

Union minister Smriti Irani will watch the movie in a theatre in Chanakyapuri on Tuesday evening, Kapoor said.

West Bengal bans ‘The Kerala Story’, makers to seek legal options

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal banned the film ‘The Kerala Story’ citing “maintenance of peace” and to avoid incidents of “hatred and violence” in the state.

West Bengal became the first state to ban the film, which narrates the ordeal of three women who are trafficked to ISIS camps after being converted to Islam through marriage.

There’s a continuing political outcry around the movie even as it has been made tax-free in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

    MS Education Academy

On the decision to ban the film, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “It is to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, and maintain peace in the state.”

Also raking up the ‘Kashmir Files’, a film on the alleged genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, which ran to packed houses despite evoking protests from the Opposition, the Bengal CM said, “What was ‘The Kashmir Files’? It was meant purely to humiliate a particular section of society. What is ‘The Kerala Story’? It is a distorted story.”

The CM directed the state chief secretary to remove the movie from all theatres where it is being screened.

Reacting to the ban, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the producer of the film, said they will pursue legal options against the decision. “If state government won’t listen to us, we will explore legal avenues. However, whatever course we take will be based on legal advice,” Shah told ANI.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film evoked sharp opposition from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who called it “RSS propaganda”.

Congress MP from Kerala, Shashi Tharoor accused the makers of “misrepresenting” Kerala.

Campaigning for the BJP in poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, weighed in on the controversy, accusing the Congress of standing with terrorists.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in lead roles.

A massive controversy erupted around the film after its trailer claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. However, in the face of protests, the contentious figure in the trailer was later withdrawn.

Its trailer description was later changed to a story of three women from Kerala.

Unveiling the truth: A ‘Kerala Story’ rooted in facts

    [ad_1]

Kerala, the southernmost state of India, is currently in the headlines over the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ which made several controversial claims.

However, as per another ‘Kerala Story’ rooted in facts, the state has always been known for its high literacy rate, progressive outlook, and social indicators. In recent years, Kerala has emerged as a hub of non-resident Keralites (NRKs) who have been contributing significantly to the state’s economy.

Non-resident Keralites contribute 34 pc of all NRI remittances

In 2020, NRK remittances stood at 2.3 lakh crores, which is 34 percent of all NRI remittances.

    MS Education Academy

The per capita income of Kerala is 60 percent higher than the rest of India, and only 0.71 percent of Keralites are below the poverty line, whereas the national average is 22 percent.

Kerala’s literacy rate is 96 percent, which is much higher than the national average of 77 percent. Moreover, the infant mortality rate in Kerala is six, which is far less than BJP-ruled states such as Assam, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Claims by ‘The Kerala Story’ movie

The recently released movie, “The Kerala Story,” claimed that Kerala women are forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS. The original claim made by the movie’s trailer was that 32,000 Kerala women were forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS. However, as the controversy erupted over the claim, the number changed to three. Ever since the release of its trailer, ‘The Kerala Story’ has been in the news due to its alleged communal content.

The film, starring Adah Sharma, created a major controversy when it claimed that 32,000 women had left the state. As a result, a petition was filed before the Kerala High Court seeking a ban on the screening of the film.

Reviews of the movie have been overwhelmingly negative, with critics calling it “distorted,” “melodramatic and manipulative,” “ghastly,” “poorly made rant,” and “steeped in damned lies and comically exaggerated propaganda.”
