JAMMU: Five people were arrested and four detained in connection with stone pelting during an anti-encroachment drive here last week, police said on Monday.
Three policemen were injured in the stone pelting that took place on Saturday during the drive to demolish a vehicle showroom built on encroached land in Malik Market in Narwal bypass area, they said.
The owner of the showroom, Sajad Ahmed Beigh, is among those arrested, newspaper Daily Excelsior quoted police as having said.
“We have arrested five people and detained four others in connection with stone pelting that took place during an anti-encroachment drive here,” a senior police officer said.
They are being questioned at Trikuta Nagar police station, officials said.

Islamabad: The US threatened to bomb Pakistan “back to the Stone Age” after the 9/11 terror attacks if then President General Pervez Musharraf did not cooperate with America’s war on Afghanistan.
In his memoir ‘In the Line of Fire’, Musharraf wrote that the threat was delivered by the tough-talking assistant secretary of state, Richard Armitage, in conversations with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief who was in Washington on a visit at the time of the 9/11 attack.
“In what has to be most undiplomatic statement ever made, Armitage added to what Colin Powell had said to me and told the (ISI) director general not only that we had to decide whether we were with America or with the terrorists, but that if we chose the terrorists, then we should be prepared to be bombed back to the Stone Age,” Musharraf wrote, explaining the situation he faced after the twin tower attack.
He said this was a shockingly barefaced threat, but it was obvious that the United States had decided to hit back, and hit back hard.
Defending his move to join the US-led War on Terror in Afghanistan, Musharraf said that his “decision was based on the well-being of my people and the best interest of my country.” “I war-gamed the United States as an adversary. There would be violent and angry reactions if we didn’t support the United States. Thus the question was: if we do not join them, can we confront them and withstand the onslaught? The answer was no, we could not…” he wrote.
He said, however, the benefits of supporting the United States were many.
Armitage later disputed the language used, but he did not deny that Pakistan was put on notice to help America’s war effort.
Gen Musharraf wrote in his book that on September 13, 2001, the US ambassador to Pakistan, Wendy Chamberlain, brought him a set of seven demands, including blanket overflight and landing rights.
Musharraf said that he balked at some of the US demands such as turning over border posts and bases to US forces.
“How could we allow the United States blanket overflight and landing rights without jeopardizing our strategic assets? I offered only a narrow flight corridor that was far from any sensitive areas,” he wrote.
Pakistan abandoned its support for the Taliban government in Kabul and allowed US overflights of Pakistan.
Deoghar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday laid the foundation stone of a Rs 450-crore nano urea plant and township of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) in Jharkhand’s Deoghar.
Shah said it will help in reducing the dependence on import of urea and usher in development of the eastern region, particularly the Santhal Paraganas.
“Nano urea will benefit farmers, and it is already being exported to five countries,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the world’s first nano urea plant in Gujarat last year, according to IFFCO. This will be India’s fifth such plant.
“PM Modi has given priority to all works related to land conservation across the country… Many urea factories were revived by Modi, and this small liquid urea factory built on 30 acres will manufacture about six crore bottles every year, which will make India self-sufficient by reducing imports in this sector,” Shah said.
The facility will prove to be useful in increasing production not only in Jharkhand but also in Bihar, Odisha and Bengal, he said.
Nano urea improves crop productivity, soil health and nutritional quality of the produce, IFFCO said.
The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in December next year, IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi said.
Awasthi said the unit will be constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore and the township will entail an investment of Rs 150 crore.
The Jharkhand Industrial Area Development Authority (JIADA) has allotted 30 acres of land to IFFCO for the complex in Jasidih area in Deoghar district.
Shah said Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS) would now function as Common Service Centres (CSC), and farmers can avail benefits of several services including no-dues certificates and birth and death registration certificates.
Stone Crushers on State lands removed, land retrieved
Anantnag February 4: District Administration Anantnag today conducted massive anti encroachment operations against various stone crushers operating from State lands. This comes in the wake of widespread anti encroachment operations in the district in which encroachment of several influential people have been removed.
Encroachment by 3 stone crusher units at Bumthan was retrieved by Tehsildar Anantnag. Sharing details, the officials confirmed that 3 crusher units who were completely operating from State land were put to notice a few days ago and today demolition drives were held as they failed to pay heed to the Government notices. A total of 25 kanals of land was retrieved.
The officials said that while removing boundary walls allied structures, the encroachers have been given a week’s time to remove the machinery from the spot failing which the machinery will also be seized.

Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan got released in theatres on January 25 (Instagram)
Kalaburgi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the makers of Pathaan landed in various controversies before the release of the movie. SRK returned on the big screen after a long gap of around four years. The movie is directed by Siddharth Anand. Various Hindu organisations and right-wing leaders were seeking a ban on the movie but it was finally released after receiving a green signal from CBFC.
According to the reports, few incidents of stone pelting were reported across the country. Some hate mongers also raised anti-SRK slogans during their protests. One such incident occurred in Kalaburgi, Karnataka, where a cinema hall was targeted by stone throwers who were protesting against the release of the film Pathaan. A video of the incident, shared by dwentertainment on Instagram, shows several people participating in the protest and throwing stones at the cinema. Check video below.
The Pathaan team did not even promote the film on reality shows or other events to avoid further controversies but still, trolls were targeting makers and SRK. Despite all controversies, the movie collected Rs 57 crore on the opening day and set various records. Fans praised the cast of Pathaan in general and SRK in particular after watching the movie. Tickets are selling fast and it seems that hatemongers who trolled SRK failed in stopping moviegoers from watching ‘Pathaan.’
The movie also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.
Hyderabad: The Foundation stone ceremony for the Atma Gourava Bhavans of 32 BC communities in about 87.3 acres will be held at Kokapet on February 5 and Uppal Bhagayat and Peerjadiguda on February 6.
Telangana Backward Class Welfare minister Gangula Kamalakar said the construction of this building was set to be ready for the inauguration during the time of Dasara.
The meeting held by Kamalakar with 32 Backward class communities on Wednesday said that chief minister K Chandra Shekhar Rao had allotted land worth crores of rupees for the construction of the buildings for 41 BC communities separately.
Different organizations in effect from each community have submitted the application and have come together for the construction of their self-respect buildings in this regard.
“The approval for the building construction has been already obtained and will have the slabs completed by March 31. if no other communities come forward for the responsibility of the construction, the state government has to take the initiative of the construction. The BC castes should unite together for the construction of their organization to facilitate the construction of these buildings. ” he remarked.
“These buildings will comprise several facilities including function halls, conference halls, student hostels, and recreation among others”. He added further.
The Minister instructed the officials to form an ad-hoc committee with officials from the BC Welfare, HMDA ( Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority), HMWSSB (Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board), Power, and Roads and Buildings departments for better coordination and taking up the infrastructure development works including roads, power transmission lines, drinking water and drainage pipelines in these layouts.
In order to coordinate with the caste organization the government has also appointed liaison officers for each of these buildings.
