    Saudi: Embroidered cloth pieces around Black Stone replaced

    Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has completed the replacement of the embroidery surrounding the Kaaba’s Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) in the Grand Mosque, Makkah, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

    The Agency for the Affairs of the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has finished replacing the embroidered pieces surrounding the Black Stone, and Rukn Al Yemani, the Yemeni Corner.

    The work of replacing the embroidered pieces with golden reed threads was carried out by six employees and skilled seamstresses from the compound.

    The project took 20 days to complete, considering the increasing number of pilgrims performing Umrah.

    The works were done without affecting the practice of pilgrims to greet and kiss the Black Stone, and to touch the Yemeni Corner.

    About Black Stone

    The Black Stone is located in the southeastern corner of the Kaaba or the House of God from the outside, and it is the starting and ending point of performing the Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba. It has an oval shape and is reddish-black in colour, and is 30 centimeters in diameter.

    The Black Stone is part of the four pillars of the Holy Kaaba, which is the point from which the circumambulation begins and ends, and Muslims took that ritual from the actions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

    The Black Stone consists of eight pieces from the remainder of it its face, grouped together in varying shapes.

    It is noteworthy that a few years ago a new line of embroidery was added to the Kiswah (Ghilaf-e-Kaaba) for the first time to embellish its Rukn Al-Yemani.

    What is the Kiswah?

    The term Kiswah in Arabic means clothing made for covering the body, but it is also used as a term for the silk covering of the Kaaba. It is made of high-quality black velvet backed by a heavy-duty lining.

    The covering of the Kaaba is made of 47 pieces of natural silk, each 98 cm by 14 metres. The outer layer of the Kiswah consists of 670 kg of pure silk. The lining on the inside is a strong cotton lining, which helps keep the silk on top.

    Srinagar, Mar 5 (GNS): A truck driver was injured after hit by a shooting stone along Panthayal in Ramban district, officials said.

    They told GNS that the area has been witnessing intermittent shooting stones for quite a while now and one such stone hit a truck driver, leaving him injured besides damaging the vehicle.

    The injured driver, they said, was given first aid by a local NGO, following which he was evacuated from the site to a nearby health facility for treatment. (GNS)

  • Stone quarry ban leaves thousands of families in distress

    Srinagar, Feb 20: The ban on stone quarrying in Jammu & Kashmir since 2016 has devastated thousands of households who relied on the business for a living.

    Although the Lieutenant Governor-led administration reduced sanctions on stone quarry activities in 2021 by allowing the owners to lift only piled-up loose material, those associated with the business say there isn’t much to celebrate as they have apprehensions that the stockpiles will be depleted in a couple of years.

    Bashir Ahmad, president United Quarry Association told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that after the 2016 ban, their survival has become difficult, and that the lifting of restrictive sanctions does not guarantee them a safe business.

    “Before the ban, there were around 400 stakeholders associated with stone quarrying; now with the ban in place, more than 40 percent have closed down the business,” Bashir said.

    He said the government in 2021 allowed the lifting of loose material but that too came with a condition to supply only to government contractors. There should be the complete lifting of the ban on our work, he urged.

    The Association president said that after the permission for the lifting of loose material was given, a quarry owner can hardly lift 4 to 5 loads a month.

    “The loose stone material that naturally fell down is not going to survive for long; it will drain out by the end of the next year or so, which will signal the complete shutdown of the business. We are currently in such poor financial shape that we are unable to even plan for new businesses,” he said.

    According to Bashir, they also discussed a rehabilitation programme with the government that involved moving to a different location, but that plan was never carried out.

    Another stone quarry owner, Naseer Ahmad, said his family has gone through mental stress. “We had taken loans against the business,” he said. “We were happy doing our business, everything was going smooth, and then there was a sudden ban.”

    Naseer said they were never taken on board by the authorities. “What can we do now as we have families to feed; banks are after us as they are not ready to waive off our loans. Where shall we go in these conditions,” he said.

    Ahmad claimed that after the ban on stone quarry works, the families associated with the business are struggling to make their livelihoods as their children were also in this business.

    SRINAGAR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that stone pelting has stopped in Kashmir and now there are theaters running and tourists visiting the Valley.

    “There used to be stone pelting and violence in Kashmir but now these things have stopped. There are theatres running and 1.8 crore tourists have visited the Valley in a year,” he said while speaking at an event in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

    Shah said when Article 370 of the Constitution of India granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir was abrogated, speeches were made in Parliament that blood will flow in Kashmir. But no one even pelted a single stone, leave aside the pool of blood, he asserted.

    The Home Minister said the country has seen an 80 per cent reduction in violence in Kashmir, insurgency in the Northeast and left-wing extremism under the Narendra Modi Government.

    “Today, I can say that there has been an 80 per cent reduction in violence in Kashmir, insurgency in the Northeast and left-wing extremism under the Modi Government,” he said.

    The Home Minister said visiting of 1.8 crore tourists in the Kashmir Valley in one year is a “big thing”.

    There had been investments worth Rs 12,000 crore in Kashmir in 70 years but under the Modi Government, it has got Rs 12,000 crore in just three years, he said.

    “Each home in Kashmir has been provided with tap water and electricity, which is a huge change,” Shah said.

    Insurgency has significantly come down in the Northeast, he said, stressing that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), a controversial statute, has been withdrawn from about 60 per cent of the area in the Northeast.

    PM Modi’s vision is to see India at the top in the world, said the Minister.
    Explaining the three big aims of ‘Amrit Kaal’, the 25-year period culminating in the centenary of India’s independence, mooted by PM Modi, Shah said the first goal is to showcase the sacrifices of freedom fighters before the present generation.

    The second aim is to bring before the people the progress made by the country in the past 75 years, while the third aim is to ensure that India reaches the top in all sectors in the next 25 years, said the Home Minister.

    He said India is becoming “atmanirbhar” in defence production – with 70 per cent self-reliance – and asserted that the country is turning into a manufacturing hub in the world under Modi.

    The Government has been taking decisions that are beneficial to the people, he said, adding that India will be leading the world in hydrogen production in two to three years.

    “Similarly, India will be way ahead in the field of satellites in four to five years,” he said.
    Indian start-ups are also proving their mettle to the world, he said.

    “It is really a proud movement for all of us that Jammu and Kashmir is hosting the Khelo India Games for the third time, which other states failed to”, he said.

    He said that they will soon have a number of star athletes, as the youth are highly involved in games, be it Football, Wushu, Cricket, Skiing or other sports activities.
