European roundup: Napoli march on to bring Serie A title dream a step closer

    [ad_1]

Goals from Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Victor Osimhen handed Napoli a 2-0 win at Salernitana 2-0 as they took another step closer to ending their 33 year-wait for a Serie A title.

Napoli controlled much of the game and Victor Osimhen thought he had given them a 35th-minute lead but was ruled offside by VAR.

The league leaders eventually went ahead during the first-half stoppage time when a cross fell to Giovanni Di Lorenzo who fired home. An unmarked Osimhen doubled the lead in the 48th minute when he tapped in a rebound after Eljif Elmas’ effort had come back off a post.

The result means Napoli have won 16 of their 19 league games and stretched their advantage over second-place AC Milan, who play Lazio on Tuesday, to 12 points.

Goals either side of half-time from Fabio Depaoli and Darko Lazovic helped Verona secure only their third league win of the season, a 2-0 home success over Lecce.

Antoine Griezmann grabbed a goal and an assist as Atlético Madrid returned to winning ways with a 3-0 home victory over Real Valladolid in La Liga.

First-half goals from Griezmann, Álvaro Morata and Mario Hermoso earned fourth-placed Atlético just their second win in their last seven league games, while a fifth straight defeat for Valladolid leaves them one point above the relegation zone in 17th.

Diego Simeone’s side seized control of the game by scoring three quickfire goals in the first half. Griezmann set up Morata for the first in the 18th minute with a clever flick, before getting on the scoresheet himself with a delightfully improvised backheel.

The Frenchman was heavily involved in the third as well, finding Hermoso with a free-kick. Hermoso’s header was denied by Valladolid goalkeeper Jordi Masip but the rebound fell back at his feet to make it 3-0 in the 28th minute.

Real Sociedad are seven points and a place above Atlético, level on points with second-placed Real Madrid but having played two games more, after a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano. Alexander Sørloth and Ander Barrenetxea scored the goals.

Martin Braithwaite scored the only goal just before half-time as Espanyol edged out Real Betis at home.

In Germany, Wolfsburg crushed visitors Freiburg 6-0 with three goals in each half as the Bundesliga restarted after a two-month World Cup and winter break.

Jonas Wind struck twice following Patrick Wimmer’s second-minute opener, with Yannick Gerhardt adding another early in the second half to seal their fifth straight league victory. Baku Ridle rattled in another in the 80th minute before a stoppage time Luca Waldschmidt penalty completed the demolition job.

The win lifted Wolfsburg to sixth on 26 points while Freiburg, who had won four of their previous five Bundesliga matches, dropped to fourth place on 30. It was also Freiburg’s heaviest league loss since coach Christian Streich took over 11 years ago.

Eintracht Frankfurt moved into second place on goal difference after goals from Jesper Lindstrom, Rafael Borre and Buta earned them a 3-0 over bottom club Schalke. Bayern Munich lead the standings on 35 points after drawing 1-1 at RB Leipzig on Friday with Union Berlin third after they came from behind to win 3-1 against Hoffenheim thanks to a second half double from Danilho Doekhi.

Cologne scored five goals inside the opening 36 minutes as they thrashed Werder Bremen 7-1 at home. Steffen Tigges was on target twice with Linton Maina, Ellyes Skhiri and Denis Huseinbasic also finding the net before Niclas Fullkrug pulled one back for Bremen before half-time. Skhiri made it 6-1 after the interval before a Marco Friedl own goal completed Bremen’s misery.

Philipp Hofmann scored twice as Bochum moved out of the relegation zone thanks to a 3-1 home win over fellow strugglers Hertha Berlin.

Ron Klain to reportedly step down as Biden chief of staff

    [ad_1]

Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s chief of staff, is reportedly set to step down from his position, in what will be the biggest change to the US president’s inner circle of advisors since he took office two years ago.

Klain will announce his departure in the coming weeks, according to the New York Times, after telling colleagues that he is ready to move on following a grueling period of successes and frustrations that stretch back to Biden’s successful 2020 election campaign.

“Two hard years,” Klain tweeted on Friday, marking the second anniversary of Biden’s inauguration. “So much to be done. But so much progress.”

The impending exit of Klain follows a period where the chief of staff worked to secure Biden’s legislative priorities, including the bipartisan infrastructure bill and last year’s inflation reduction act, which was achieved following 18 months of often torturous negotiations between the White House and lawmakers, most notably Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia.

More recently, Biden has come under scrutiny for alleged improper handling of federal documents, as well as fresh pressure from Republicans in their new majority in the House of Representatives. The new chief of staff is expected to have to mount a defense of Biden’s victories so far, as well as oversee the lead-up to a likely re-election bid by the 80-year-old president.

Klain, who is 61, has a long record in Democratic political circles, having been involved in both of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaigns, acted as chief of staff to both Al Gore and then Biden when the men served as vice president previously. Klain, a lawyer by training, also oversaw the Obama administration’s response to an outbreak of Ebola in 2014.

He was named as Biden’s chief of staff just a few days after the 2020 election victory was secured.

    ‘Can women have it all?’

It was inevitable that someone was going to ask that most cliched of questions and, voilà, they did. Shortly after Jacinda Ardern’s shock resignation as New Zealand prime minister this week, the BBC tweeted out a story about Ardern balancing motherhood with politics, with a headline asking if women can really have it all. After being accused of “staggering sexism”, the BBC deleted the headline and apologised.

Having it all. Please, someone, ban that stupid phrase already. It is 2023! I’m pretty sure we’ve spent at least a decade talking about the fact that nobody ever asks whether working dads can have it all. When Boris Johnson had two new kids during his tenure as prime minister of Britain there wasn’t a lot of handwringing about how he’d balance life with a newborn, and the responsibilities of being a father of seven with his job. When Elon Musk became a dad for the umpteenth time the BBC didn’t ask how he was going to balance fatherhood with colonizing Mars. Or, if they did, I must have missed that article.

Forget “having it all”, Ardern showed us all a powerful new model of leadership. Our current model of leadership (which, shameless plug, I’ve written an entire book called Strong Female Lead about) often treats empathy as a weakness. Ardern showed us all that kindness and compassion aren’t weaknesses, they’re strengths. Our current model of leadership prioritizes confidence over competence and tends to reward arrogance. Ardern, meanwhile, has spoken about the importance of self-doubt. “Some of the people I admire the most have that self-consciousness and that slight gnawing lack of confidence,” the politician said in a 2020 interview. When impostor syndrome creeps in, she explained, she thinks about how to use it constructively. “Does [that self-doubt] mean I need to do a bit more prep, do I need to think more about my decision making?” Wouldn’t it be nice if more politicians went through that exercise?!

For a long time, women have been told to “lean in” to a patriarchal model of leadership. They’ve been told that, in order to be successful, they have to mold themselves into the image of a leader dictated by men. Ardern didn’t do that. She led on her own terms. And, perhaps, most powerfully, she stopped leading on her own terms. “I know what this job takes,” Ardern said when she announced her resignation. “And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice.”

We tend to equate leadership with being the loudest voice in the room. But true leadership means knowing when it’s time to pass the mic. True leadership means knowing when it’s time to step back. Unfortunately most lawmakers, particularly in the US, seem desperate to hold on to power for as long as humanly possible even if it’s not for the greater good. I mean, do you know how old the average senator in the US is? 64.3 years old. That’s over 20 years older than Ardern. Joe Biden, the oldest president in American history, is 80 and is expected to run again in the 2024 election. Senator Chuck Grassley is 89 as is Senator Dianne Feinstein of California. There have been a lot of concerns about Feinstein’s cognitive health and yet she still refuses to say whether she’s going to run for another term or not. Does it really serve her constituents for her to have another term, or does it serve it her ego?

I’m not saying that there should be an age limit in politics, by the way. Experience is important. But there’s a real problem when the same people cling to power for decades and refuse to make room for new blood. Ardern, 42, says she no longer has enough in the tank to do her job justice. I’ve got to wonder what on earth some long-serving politicians in the US have in their tanks. I’ve got a feeling it may be narcissism.

Is Milf Manor the queasiest new dating show on TV?

Betteridge’s law states that: “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.” But having read this Guardian piece on a horrifying new reality show called MILF Manor I think I’ve found the exception to that law.

The Taliban bought a ‘verified’ check mark on Twitter

It now appears to have been removed after some understandable outrage.

Sierra Leone passes landmark law on women’s rights

Under the new Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act 30% of public and private jobs must be reserved for women. The law also requires some employers to give at least 14-weeks of maternity leave.

The ‘virgin speculum’: proof that medicine is still rife with outrageous myths about women

Out of the 16 million women in the UK who were eligible for a cervical screening test in 2022, only 11.2 million took one. That’s the lowest level in a decade. As Jenny Halpern Prince writes in the Guardian, women might feel more comfortable taking the test if it were updated a little bit. As it is, the speculum that is used for the examination is called a “virgin speculum”. Prince is calling for it to be renamed the “extra-small speculum” or for its medical name, the Pederson speculum, to be used. “The term virgin speculum should be removed from use by medical device advertisers and the medical profession (it is currently taught in medical schools),” writes Prince. That does seem a little bit like a no-brainer.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is having a #MeToo moment

Top athletes have accused the WFI’s president and several coaches of sexual misconduct. This goes beyond wrestling because the WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is also a lawmaker for the ruling Bharatiya Janata party.

    The week in passwordarchy

Netflix has been threatening to crack down on password sharing for a while and now it looks like it’s finally happening. During its recent earnings report the streaming service announced that it will enforce password-sharing rules “more broadly” in the next few months. Not sure this is a great idea, Netflix. You’re going to find yourself quite literally cancelled.

WFI chief to step aside till oversight committee investigates issue: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Indian wrestlers called off their protest late on Friday evening after a second meeting at the Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s residence in the national capital.

The meeting lasted beyond midnight, following which wrestler Bajrang Punia announced to the media that the other wrestlers are calling off the protest after assurance of action from Thakur against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The wrestlers have been staging a protest since Wednesday, accusing WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, sponsorship fund embezzlement, and athletes’ mismanagement.

“After receiving the assurance from our Sports Minister, we have decided to call off the protest,” said Punia.

The meeting at the Sports Minister’s residence lasted for more than five hours after the wrestlers — Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia, and others — reached at 7 p.m.

Thakur said that his Ministry have listened to the grievances of the wrestlers and steps will be taken accordingly, while adding that demands of the wrestlers will be taken care of.

“I want to thank all the players as they have provided us with valuable inputs and our discussions have been about taking forward the sports. We have seen changes in multiple sports federations in the recent past and this will be looked upon,” he added.

“The demands put in by the wrestlers will be taken care of. We will constitute an oversight committee and will announce the name of members tomorrow.”

He assured that an unbiased probe will be carried by the oversight committee on all the accusations levelled against the WFI and its President with the latter stepping aside from his post.

“The committee will investigate all the serious allegations, including sexual harassment and financial irregularities. It will be investigated properly and the committee will take further decisions,” Thakur added.

“The committee will also look into the daily affairs of the federation and the WFI President will step aside till the probe goes on. He will also cooperate in the investigation,” the Sports Minister confirmed.

Bajrang Punia also added that Thakur has also ensured safety to the wrestlers as he hoped that the committee will conclude its investigation in a month’s time.

“Thank you everyone for your valuable support. Hopefully, the committee will give results in one month and we are hopeful of an independent investigation. Our security will be taken care of as assured by the Sports Minister,” he said.
