Mentioning marital status not mandatory for admission: Bangladesh HC

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: The Bangladesh High Court on Thursday ruled that mentioning marital status is not mandatory for getting enrolled in educational institutions.

A bench of Justices Naima Haider and Justice Md Khairul Alam delivered the verdict after hearing a writ petition.

Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta represented the state while Aneek R Haque appeared for the writ petitioner during hearing on the rule.

On November 14, 2017, lawyers Fariha Ferdous and Nahid Sultana Jeni had filed the writ in the form of public interest litigation in the High Court following a news report titled “What will the girl do now?”

As per the report, a girl, the daughter of a day labourer, was raped in 2013 when she was a Secondary School Certificate examinee. The rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime. The rape had resulted in pregnancy and she gave birth to a baby.

However, the rape survivor was denied admission to a nursing college as she had not identified herself as “estranged” in the application form as “asked” by the college authority.

The HC on December 11, 2017 issued the rule questioning the legality of the educational institutions’ action seeking information on marital status of admission seekers.

The court issued a rule asking the government authorities to explain as to why such an action of inquiring about the marital status of admission seekers should not be declared unconstitutional.

The court also asked the authorities to enroll the female student to Rajshahi Government Nursing College.

  • Mehrauli demolition: HC directs authorities to maintain status quo on properties

Mehrauli demolition: HC directs authorities to maintain status quo on properties

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed the authorities to maintain status quo till February 16 on various properties in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area in the national capital which have been identified to be demolished as part of an anti-encroachment drive.

The high court also asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to state its stand on a batch of petitions challenging the demolition action and seeking a bar on demolition in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area in south Delhi till a fresh “demarcation report” has been prepared.

A large number of petitions on the issue were listed for hearing before two different judges Justice Mini Pushkarna and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.

Nearly 20 multi-storey buildings, a large number of shops and houses and a private school building are among the structures constructed “illegally” over the last few decades in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, which the authorities have identified as part of the anti-encroachment drive.

Without interfering with the demolition exercise at this stage, Justice Pushkarna issued notice to the Delhi government and DDA on the petition by Mehrauli Minorities Resident And Shop Owners Welfare and directed that the matter be placed before the division bench headed by the Chief Justice, where a similar matter is already pending.

The drive, which began on February 10, comes a month ahead of a proposed G20 meeting at the park in south Delhi. According to the DDA, the old park has about 55 monuments under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, state archeological department and the urban civic body.

The petitioner, who was raising the issue of demarcation report, submitted that Mehrauli has many slum clusters and several waqf properties, including mosques and dargahs, were located there.

He alleged the revenue minister of the Delhi government said on February 11 that a fresh “demarcation report” should be prepared as the present report has “certain objections” and, in the meantime, no demolition exercise should be carried out.

The DDA counsel said it is the land owning agency in the present case and the demolition exercise is in terms of the order passed by a division bench of the high court in December last year for removal of encroachments.

The lawyer contended the demarcation report is of the year 2021 and the minister cannot sit in review over it.

In the batch of pleas before Justice Arora, the court also directed the petitioners and their lawyers to meet DDA’s Deputy Director of Land Management at his office tomorrow at 3.30 PM to present their claims on respective land parcels.

It asked the DDA to file a demarcation report with respect to the subject properties by Wednesday afternoon.

Advocate Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, representing the residents of Green Apartments in Mehrauli, said there are 62 families residing in 62 flats and the entire action of the DDA is illegal because the authorities are going ahead with the drive without giving any opportunity to the residents to be heard.

He said the residents of the apartments have got their title deeds registered by the registrar and the DDA along with the Delhi government has gone ahead with the demarcation exercise without notifying the people residing there, something which is not allowed under law.

On February 10, the high court had directed the authorities to maintain status quo on 400 jhuggis of Ghosiya Slum Colony in Mehrauli, which were also to be demolished.

The land on which the alleged encroachment was made belonged to multiple agencies including the DDA, Waqf Board, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it has been claimed.

According to the demolition notice, the land on which demolition is being carried out is a part of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park and the ‘existing unauthorised encroachment’ is acting as a hindrance to its development.

On December 23, 2022, the high court had refused to stay the demolition exercise proposed in Mehrauli Archaeological Park.

The DDA had then informed the court that no mosque or graveyard was being demolished by the authorities and that only the encroachers will be removed from places in and around the park. It said the exercise will be carried out in accordance with the demarcation report.

In from the coal: Australia sheds climate pariah status to make up with Europe

    [ad_1]

papua new guinea australia treaty 83304

    Europe loves the Aussies again.

Australia was, until recently, an international pariah on climate change and a punchline in Brussels. But a new government in Canberra coupled with Europe’s energy and economic woes mean a better relationship is now emerging — one that could fuel Europe’s transition to a clean economy, while enriching Australia immensely.

“Europe is energy hungry and capital rich, Australia’s energy rich and capital hungry, and that means that there’s a lot that we can do together,” said Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen.

A little over a year ago, relations between Australia and the EU were in a parlous state. The government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison had reneged on a nuclear submarine contract — a decision the current government stands by — incensing the French and by extension the EU. Equally as frustrating for many Europeans was Australia’s climate policy, which was viewed as outstandingly meager even in a lackluster global field.

The election of Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese — whose father was Italian — last May brought a change in tone, as well as a new climate target and a trickle of policies designed to cut greenhouse gas pollution that heats up the planet.

Those moves were “the entry ticket” to dealings with Europe, Bowen told POLITICO in Brussels, the second-last stop on a European tour. “Australia’s change of climate positioning, climate policy, has changed our position in the world.”

That’s been most notable in progress on talks on a free trade agreement with the EU. Landing that deal would be a “big step forward,” said Bowen. Particularly because when it comes to clean energy, Australia wants to sell and Europe wants to buy.

Using the vast sunny desert in its interior, Australia could be a “renewable energy superpower,” Bowen argued. Solar energy can be tapped to make green hydrogen and shipped to Europe, he said.

European governments are listening closely to the pitch. Bowen was in Rotterdam on Monday, inspecting the potential to use the Netherlands port as an entry for antipodean hydrogen. He signed a provisional deal with the Dutch government to that end. Last week, Bowen announced a series of joint investments with the German government in Australian hydrogen research projects worth €72 million.

It’s not just sun, Australia has tantalum and tungsten and a host of minerals Europe needs for building clean tech, but that it currently imports. In many cases those minerals are refined or otherwise processed in China, a dependency that Brussels is keen to rapidly unwind — not least with its Critical Raw Materials Act, expected in March.

According to a 2022 government report, Australia holds the second-largest global reserves of cobalt and lithium, from which batteries are made, and is No. 1 in zirconium, which is used to line nuclear reactors.

Asked whether Australia can ease Europe’s dependence on China, Bowen said: “We want to be a very strong factor in the supply chains. We’re a trusted, reliable trading partner. We have strong ethical supply chains. We have strong environmental standards.”

But Australia has its own entanglements.

Certain Australian minerals, notably lithium, are largely refined and manufactured in China. Bowen said he was keen on bringing at least some of that resource-intensive, polluting work back to Australia.

While its climate targets are now broadly in line with other rich nations, the rehabilitation of Australia’s climate image jars with its role as one of the biggest fossil fuel sellers on the planet.

Australia’s coal exports, when burned in overseas power plants, generate huge amounts of planet-warming pollution — almost double the amount produced annually by Australians within their borders. Australia is also the third-largest exporter of natural gas, including an increasing flow to the EU. At home, the government is facing calls from the Greens party and centrist climate independents to reject plans for more than 100 coal and gas developments around the country.

But how many of Bowen’s counterparts raised the issue of Australia’s emissions during his travels around Europe? “Nobody,” he said. “We are here to help.”

    Antonia Zimmermann contributed reporting.

  • WhatsApp introduces ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ features

WhatsApp introduces ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ features

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp on Tuesday announced new features coming to its status, including ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ and much more.

The new features have started rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks, the company said in a statement.

The ‘Voice Status’ feature allows users to record and share voice messages for up to 30 seconds on WhatsApp status.

On the other hand, ‘Status Reactions’ allows users to give a quick and easy way to respond to status updates from their friends and close contacts.

“This was the #1 feature users wanted, following the launch of Reactions last year. You can now quickly reply to any status by swiping up and tapping on one of eight emojis. You can of course still reply to a status with text, voice message, stickers and more,” the platform said.

The company also introduced other features including ‘Private Audience Selector’, ‘Status Profile Rings for New Updates’ and ‘Link Previews on Status’.

With the ‘Private Audience Selector’, users can update their privacy settings per status so that they can choose who views their status each time they update it.

Moreover, the most recent audience selection will be used as the default for the users’ next status.

“With the new status profile ring you’ll never miss a status from a loved one. This ring will be present around your contact’s profile picture whenever they share a status update. It will be visible in the chat lists, group participant lists, and contact info,” the platform said.

Now when users post a link on their status, they will see a visual preview of the link content, similar to when users send a message, thanks to the ‘Link Previews on Status’ feature.

“Status is a popular way to share ephemeral updates with friends and close contacts on WhatsApp. They disappear in 24 hours and may include photos, videos, GIFs, text, and more,” the company said.

“Just like your personal chats and calls, your WhatsApp status is protected by end-to-end encryption so you can share privately and securely,” it added.

  • YSRCP to move private member’s bill in Parliament seeking special status for AP

YSRCP to move private member’s bill in Parliament seeking special status for AP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) will move a private member’s bill in the current session of Parliament seeking the special category state status to Andhra Pradesh.

The bill seeking to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 was listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha on Friday but it could not be taken up due to the adjournment of the House.

“Our long-pending demand for special category status has not been met by the government. There was no option but to bring a private member’s bill,” Lok Sabha MP from Anantapur constituency Talari Rangaiah told reporters here.

The party members and the chief minister have raised this issue several times within and outside Parliament in the past few years, but unfortunately the central government has not fulfilled its promise made during the state’s bifurcation, he said.

With this private member’s bill, the YSRCP wants to raise awareness about the issue which is important for the economic development of Andhra Pradesh, Rangaiah said and expressed confidence of getting support from the Opposition parties.

N Reddeppa, the Lok Sabha MP from Chittoor, said the party has also demanded setting up of a railway zone in Vishakapatnam, Rs 5,000 crore allocation for AIIMS in Amaravati and budgetary allocation for inter-linking of rivers project.

The party will continue to fight until the demands are fulfilled, he added.

Subhash Chandra Bose Alluri, the MP from Narsapuram, said funds are required for the development of the state. A special category status will help Andhra Pradesh attract more investments and revive its economy.

In 2014, Andhra Pradesh was promised special category status by the Congress government at the Centre during the state’s bifurcation and by the BJP during the course of its 2014 election campaign.

Manmohan Singh, who was then prime minister, had assured in the the Rajya Sabha that a special status would be extended to Andhra Pradesh for five years. This oral submission has been the basis for Andhra Pradesh’s claim to the status.

However, the granting of special category status was restricted by the 14th Finance Commission which did away with the distinction between general and special category states.

If in power, we promise ST status to Valmiki community: Nara Lokesh

    [ad_1]

Palamaner: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national general secretary Nara Lokesh, on the sixth day of his pada yatra ‘Yuva Galam’, met the Valmiki community leaders at Belupalle, and promised the Scheduled Tribes (STs) status if his party is voted top power.

Addressing the Valmiki community leaders, Lokesh said chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy had deceived them by not fulfilling his promises.

“The government has been unresponsive to include the Valmikis into the Scheduled Tribes (STs). They suffer from unemployment forcing them to migrate to neighbouring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,” Lokesh said.

Lokesh pointed out that it was during Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure as chief minister of the state when the Satyapal Committee was formed to study the issues of the Valimiki community. A resolution was passed in 2017 to include them in the STs list.

“During the TDP regime, loans were sanctioned to the community members on subsidy but the current state government did not sanction a single loan to the Valmiki community,” he said.

Lokesh promised that separate companies will be set up in this area to provide employment to those belonging to the Valmiki community.

He also met sugarcane farmers at Sake Vuru of Baireddipalle Mandal.

Interacting with them, Lokesh promised all possible assistance, including the supply of quality fertilisers and pesticides, and a decrease in labour charges
