Maha: Hindutva members demand exile of Muslim family over pro-Aurangzeb WhatsApp status

After reports of a young Muslim man being arrested by the Vadgaon police in Maharashtra emerged, Hindutva groups took out a rally in Sawarde village demanding the accused’s family be exiled.
According to a local Marathi news Lokmat, the accused – Mohammed Momim – had put up a Whatsapp status on Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in reference to the recent name change of the city of Aurangabad.
Momim’s status was widely shared angering Hindutva members of his village. They staged a sit-in protest demanding strict action against Momim.
Mohammed Momim was finally arrested by the police on Sunday under Section 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the Indian Penal Code.
However, matters did not end here. Hindutva organisations took out a bike rally demanding the Sarpanch of the village declare Momim’s family as outcasts. They wanted the family to leave the village for good.

The police arrested him and charged him for hurting religious sentiments.

However, the Sarpanch refused to bow down to their demands. This angered the Hindutva organisations who went ahead and burnt a sugar sack warehouse as well as a tempo, allegedly owned by one of Momim’s relations.
They then reached the Vadgaon Police station and staged a demonstration demanding sedition charges be levelled against Momim.
As tension spiraled in Sawarde and the nearby villages of Minche and Peth Vadgaon, it was only after the police came to the spot did the mob calm down.

However, when Siasat.com spoke to a Vadgaon police officer, the officer declined to comment and said the reports of a Hindutva bike rally were false.
“Everything is peaceful in the area. No bike rally was held,” the officer told Siasat.com.

Maharashtra: Man booked for WhatsApp status on Mughal emperor Aurangzeb

Kolhapur: An offence was registered on Sunday against a man from a minority community in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district for allegedly hailing Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on his WhatsApp status, police said.
Based on a complaint, a case under section 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Vadgaon police station, an official said.
The man had allegedly hailed emperor Aurangzeb on his WhatsApp status and it came to light on March 16, he said.
The matter is being probed, the official said, urging people not to post any derogatory remarks about any religion on social media.

PAN Aadhaar Link Status: A permanent account number (PAN) is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier, issued in the form of a laminated “PAN card”, by the Indian Income Tax Department, to any person who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application.
A PAN is a unique identifier issued to all judicial entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act,^{1961. The income tax PAN and its linked card are issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act. It is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT) and it also serves as an important proof of identification.}
Linking your PAN card with Aadhaar has been made mandatory for certain services, such as filing your income tax returns. As per a recent notification from the government, the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar is 31 March 2023. Earlier, the last date was 31 March 2022.

However, fines will have to be paid in case the PAN and Aadhaar are linked after 31 March 2022. The fine is Rs.500 if the linking is done between 1 April 2022 and 30 June 2022. The penalty is Rs.1,000 if the linking is done between 1 July 2022 and 31 March 2023.

- Step 2: On the e-Filing Portal homepage, go to ‘Quick Links’ and click on Link Aadhaar Status.
- Step 3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number, and click on View Link Aadhaar Status.
On successful validation, a message will be displayed regarding your Link Aadhaar Status.
If the Aadhaar-Pan link is in progress, then the below message will appear on the screen;
Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please check the status later by clicking on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on Home Page

If the Aadhaar PAN linking is successful, then it will display the following message;

- Step 1b: Alternatively, you can go to My Profile > Link Aadhaar Status.

If the validation fails, click on Link Aadhaar on the Status page, and you will need to repeat the steps to link your PAN and Aadhaar.
If your request to link PAN and Aadhaar is pending with UIDAI for validation, you will need to check the status later.

Telangana must first submit proposal to seek national project status: Centre

Hyderabad: Following regular criticism from the Telangana government, the Centre on Thursday told the Lok Sabha that in order to seek National Project (NP) status for Kaleshwaram and Palamuru Rangareddy lift irrigation schemes, the state must first file a proposal and send it to the Jal Shakti ministry.
The Bharat Rashtra Smaithi (BRS) government has been regularly demanding the Centre to sanction National Project status to any project in Telangana, especially Kaleshwaram.
Minister of State for Jal Shakti Bishweswar Tudu while replying to a question by Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, said that for inclusion of a project for funding under the NP scheme of Jal Shakti Ministry, it is required to be first appraised by Central Water Commission (CWC), and accepted by the Advisory Committee on Irrigation, Flood Control and Multipurpose Projects.
The minister held that a proposal by the state, in the prescribed format for the inclusion of the project under the NP scheme is step one to be put forward for approval, adding that the Centre and state funds ratio would be 60:40 if the NP scheme is sanctioned.
“As per norms laid down for the NP scheme, the project is then required to be considered by the ‘High Powered Steering Committee (HPSC) that will examine whether it meets the contours of the NP scheme,” Tudu added.
“On being recommended by HPSC, and as per availability of fund, the Government of India may approve the inclusion of a project under the National Projects scheme,” the minister said.

Hamas warns Israel against any change in Al-Aqsa status quo as Ramzan nears

Gaza: As the Muslim holy month of Ramzan is approaching, Hamas has warned Israel against any change in the status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, saying any change “would turn the area into an earthquake”.
Marwan Issa, deputy chief of staff of Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, made the remarks amid warnings of increased tensions between Israel and Palestine, especially in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, reports Xinhua news agency.
“There is no political process, and the enemy (Israel) has annulled Oslo treaties (signed between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993), so that the coming days will be full of events and incidents,” Issa said.
He called for “igniting and supporting resistance action in all Palestine, mainly in the West Bank and Jerusalem,” adding: “We will defend the Palestinian people with all force when direct intervention is required.”
In April 2022, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound witnessed violent clashes between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli police forces when Jews visited the holy s
ite. Dozens of Palestinian worshipers were injured.
The Hamas threats also came amid escalating tensions in the West Bank which flared up in January.
Since January, 84 Palestinians and 14 Israelis have been killed in the ensuing violence.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Jews as the most sacred site, is regarded by Muslims as their third holiest site.
The holy site has been administered by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, a Jordanian body, since 1948.
Under a 1967 agreement between Israel and Jordan, non-Muslim worshippers can visit the compound but are prohibited from praying there.

DDC Kulgam reviews status of developmental projects/ works of Irrigation & Municipalities

KULGAM, MARCH 07: To review the status of developmental projects of Irrigation department and Municipalities in Kulgam, a meeting of officers was today held under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner (DDC) Kulgam, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat at Mini-Secretariat, here.
The meeting was attended by President Municipal Council Kulgam Muneeb Ahmad Zargar; ADDC Showkat Ahmad Rather; Jt. Director Planning, Executive Engineers from Irrigation, PDD and R&B, EOs and other concerned officers.
During the meeting, the DDC reviewed the status of Slaughter House, Sumo Stand and Solid Waste Management plant, and directed Executive Engineer R&B Kulgam to complete these Projects well in time.
Moreover, Executive Engineer KPDCL and EO Municipal Council Kulgam were directed to make all street lights functional in town at an earliest.
The DDC also reviewed status and progress made in various irrigation works. He reviewed status and progress made on renovation and repairs of Chakidhara, Grimtoo, Sonman, Mav Khul, Nandi and other canals.
He instructed Executive Engineer, Irrigation department to scale up pace of work and complete the repair and renovation of canals and ensure smooth irrigation facilities to the agrarians throughout this farming season.

Biden administration expected to grant protected immigration status for Nicaraguans

Immigration groups and Florida lawmakers have pushed the Biden administration to redesignate TPS for Nicaraguans living in the U.S., which would allow them to live and work in the country without fear of deportation.
Since taking office, President Joe Biden has leaned on TPS as a tool to grant immigration relief to hundreds of thousands of people as Congress remains in gridlock over fixes to the immigration system. Biden has designated six new countries for TPS since taking office and redesignated six other nations, making an additional 712,000 U.S. immigrants eligible for the status, according to the Migration Policy Institute. Backlogs at the U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services have delayed approvals, but nearly 537,000 people had TPS as of November 2022.
Nicaraguans first received TPS in 1999 after Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc in Central America. The Temporary Protected Status designation, created by Congress in 1990, helps residents from countries struck by natural disaster, armed conflict or other “extraordinary and temporary conditions.”
There were 4,250 TPS recipients from the country in 2021, the U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services said in a congressional report.
A record-number of Nicaraguans sought to illegally enter the U.S. last year, as migrants fled political persecution and poor economic conditions in the country. In fiscal year 2022, border officials said there were 163,876 encounters with Nicaraguans.
In a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last month, federal lawmakers pointed to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s political “repression” of protesters, clergy and students.
“The increasingly totalitarian nature of the Ortega-Murillo regime and the brutal political repression Nicaraguans face in their daily lives exacerbate the urgent need for the Biden Administration to redesignate and extend TPS to Nicaragua,” the letter said.
The letter also mentioned the government’s release of over 222 political prisoners last month. The Biden administration orchestrated the relocation of the prisoners to the U.S. through its humanitarian parole program and have granted them this status for two years. Biden announced the parole program —aimed to curb the flow of Nicaraguans, Haitians and Cubans — in January.

That policy forced migrants to apply for asylum from their home country, while expelling those who try to enter the U.S. unlawfully from Mexico. Migrants were only approved if they had a verified sponsor and were allowed to enter the U.S. by air. Border encounters have dropped significantly this year, which Biden officials credit to the new policy.
Last month, the Biden administration announced a proposed rule that will bar some migrants from applying for asylum in the U.S. if they cross the border illegally or fail to first apply for safe harbor in another country. The proposal — which immigrant advocates refer to as the “transit ban” or the “asylum ban” — will take effect on May 11 and serve as its policy solution to the long-awaited end of Title 42, a pandemic-era restriction that lifts the same day.

WhatsApp now lets users report status updates on iOS beta

San Francisco: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new feature, which will allow users to report status updates, on iOS beta.
The beta testers will see a new “Report” option in the status updates, reports WABetaInfo.
With the new feature, users can report any status update that might violate the Terms of Service, which will then be sent to the moderation team.
Also, the feature makes sure that the messages, media, location sharing, calls and status updates are all protected by end-to-end encryption on all devices.
This means that the content of the messages and private calls will remain inaccessible to anyone, including WhatsApp, Meta or any third-party proxy provider.
The new feature is useful as it will make the platform safe and secure for all users.
The ability to report status updates is available to some beta testers after installing the latest beta version of the application, and it is expected to roll out to more users over the coming days, the report said.
Last month, WhatsApp was reportedly working on this feature for Android beta.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the messaging platform had announced that it was rolling out new features coming to its status, including ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ and much more.
