Akhilesh to unveil Kanshi Ram statue; set to strike at BSP’s Dalit base in UP

Lucknow: Having given up all hopes of an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is now going all out to woo the Dalits.

The party will use the upcoming Ambedkar Jayanti to kick off its campaign.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav will unveil a statue of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram at a function in Rae Bareli on April 3.

    MS Education Academy

According to party sources, in his address, Akhilesh will recall BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s alliance with SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1993 and underline the need for another ‘coming together’ of the forces in the present political scenario.

SP national general secretary Swami Prasad Maurya said, “The BSP today has strayed away from the path shown by its founder Kanshi Ram and Babasaheb Ambedkar. There is an urgent need for the followers of Kanshi Ram and Mulayam Singh Yadav to join hands once again for nation building. It is time to carry forward their idea of social justice that the two leaders had first shared in 1993.”

According to sources, the SP leadership feels that an OBC-Dalit combination, in at least a dozen Lok Sabha constituencies, has the ability to be a game changer on the strength of its numbers.

In the political circles, the move is being seen as SP’s latest strategy to win over non-Jatav Dalits who had sided with the BJP in the 2022 Assembly polls and also make a dent in the BSP’s Jatav vote base.

The party’s broad frame of this strategy was also noticeable in the recently constituted national executive committee of the party. Where 62 members in the committee — around 35 per cent — were from non-Yadav OBC communities particularly from electorally influential communities like Pasi, Kurmi, Rajbhar and Nishad.

A total of six members in the national executive committee list were Dalits.

Besides, of late, Akhilesh has been seen making a conscious effort to promote Ayodhya MLA Avadhesh Prasad as the Dalit face of the party.

The nine-term MLA, who currently represents the Milkipur Assembly constituency of Ayodhya, not only shares a seat next to party president Akhilesh Yadav in the state Assembly but was also seen sharing the dais with Yadav during the two-day party’s national executive meet in Kolkata recently.

Akhilesh even tweeted a selfie with Awadhesh Prasad and Shivpal Yadav on board a flight to Kolkata, to underline the growing stature of the Milkipur MLA in the party.

His rising stature in SP is being seen as Akhilesh’s attempt to send across the message that the party is willing to give a special status to Dalits — who were till now seen as a dedicated and exclusive voter base of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

The SP, which had floated Babasaheb Vahini on Ambedkar Jayanti in 2021, now plans to strengthen the organisation within the party.

The Vahini has been asked to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti in a grand manner in all districts.

New Delhi: Another statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised at a university campus in Burnaby, Canada, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver announced on Tuesday, just days after another statue was targeted in Ontario.

In the latest incident, the statue had been placed at Peace Square at Simon Fraser Univerity’s Burnaby campus.

“We strongly condemn heinous crime of vandalising the statute of harbinger of peace Mahatma Gandhiji, @SFU Burnaby campus,” the Consulate General tweeted.

“The Canadian authorities are urged to investigate the matter urgently and bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly,” it added.

    More details are awaited.

The incident comes just after anti-India elements defaced and spray-painted a statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the City Hall in the town of Hamilton in Ontario on March 23.

While Hamilton Police said they are investigating the case, attacks by Khalistani backers on Indian installations and temples are on the rise in the North American nation.

Starting 2023, a string of attacks has been unleashed upon Hindu temples across Canada with close to half-a-dozen incidents of vandalism, spiteful graffiti, break-ins and burglaries.

In July last year, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located at the Vishnu Mandir in Richmond Hill in the Greater Toronto Area was vandalised and defaced with graphic words.

  • Hyderabad: BRS submits complaint against Bandi to Ambedkar’s statue

Hyderabad: BRS submits complaint against Bandi to Ambedkar’s statue

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan denied an appointment to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders who were protesting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s recent comments on MLC K Kavitha.

Upon not receiving an appointment with the Governor, the BRS leaders submit the complaint letter to BR Ambedkar Statue and pasted copies of the complaint on the walls of Raj Bhavan.

In the complaint letter to the Governor, BRS leaders called the Governor to take action against the “brazen comments deliberately made by Bandi Sanjay,” by issuing stern warnings.

As the Governor denied an appointment, the BRS women were prevented from entering the Raj Bhavan by the police.

Bandi Sanjay, while addressing a rally on Saturday said, “Few journalists asked me if Kavitha would be arrested. If or not arrested should Kavitha be kissed!”

His comments did not go down well with Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) cadres who protested and burnt effigies in the national capital.

In response, Bandi Sanjay’s office said the statement used by the BJP leader is a common phrase used in the Telugu language which means if someone does a crime, would you appreciate or punish?

State Women’s Commission chairperson Sunitha Laxma Reddy in a statement issued on Saturday described Bandi’s comments as derogatory and highly objectionable.

Three cases have been registered against Bandi Sanjay for allegedly using defamatory and derogatory comments against Kavitha at the Saroornagar, LB Nagar and Chaitanyapuri police stations under the Rachakonda police limits.

  • Life-size statue of Tendulkar to come up at Wankhede

Life-size statue of Tendulkar to come up at Wankhede

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In his own words, life has come full circle for Sachin Tendulkar, who is set to be honoured with a life-size statue at the Wankhede Stadium, the place where it all began for him.

The cricket icon’s journey started here under childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar, and it was at this very venue that he won the World Cup with India in 2011.

He also bid adieu to cricket at the same ground, by playing in his landmark 200th Test against the West Indies in 2013.

The statue is expected to be unveiled when he turns 50 on April 24.

“I started my cricketing journey representing Mumbai. India winning the World Cup in 2011 remains the biggest moment in my life. My last match representing India, was very memorable, and that happened in Mumbai as well,” Tendulkar told PTI.

“Life has come a full circle for me at Wankhede, which has been witness to some very special moments. When the Mumbai Cricket Association suggested about my statue at Wankhede, I was pleasantly surprised.

“I’ve always taken a lot of pride in representing Mumbai cricket, and my wonderful association with the MCA continues today as well. I’m very grateful to them for this kind of gesture,” he added.

The announcement was earlier done by Mumbai Cricket Association president Amol Kale on the sidelines of Tendulkar’s visit to the Wankhede on Tuesday.

Tendulkar is regarded as one of the game’s all-time greats, thanks to his incredible career that spanned 24 years and during which he broke a plethora of records.

The cricket icon already has a stand named after him at the Wankhede. He also has a wax statue of him at Madame Tussauds in London.
