Telangana HC orders report on CCTV maintenance in police stations

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has ordered the Director General of Police, Anjani Kumar to submit a report on the status of CCTVs and maintenance of its footages in all police stations within the state by March 10.

Justice Kanneganti Lalitha issued these directions while dealing with a contempt case filed by Chevva Madhavulu of Thimmajipet police station in Nagarkurnool district, complaining that its sub-inspector had manhandled him inside the police station.

He sought action against the SI for refusing to listen to him and the hospital which treated him and refused to register the medico-legal case.

Following this, Madhavulu moved the High Court to contest it.

Madhavaram Rameshwara Rao, counsel for the petitioner, brought to the notice of the court that the higher authorities did not even listen to Madhavulu’s contention.

It must be noted that the High Court on September 27 had directed the SP of Nagarkurnool to consider the representation of Madhavulu and take appropriate action.

The SP delegated it to a DSP, who in turn, entrusted the job to the circle inspector, who kept the case pending, following which a contempt case was filed by Mashavulu.

The court on February 13, directed the SP of Nagarkurnool to verify the CCTV footage.

However, the government counsel informed the court that the CCTV cameras in the police station were not working for over 10 months.

In response to these remarks, Justice Lalitha recalled the Supreme Court’s instructions in a case where the police were required to keep CCTV video for at least six months.

The court faulted the Telangana police for not complying with apex court orders.

The court further directed the SP to personally look into the CCTV footage of that day and present it before the Court by March 10 in relation to the Madhavulu case,

YouTube Music now let users create customise radio stations

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google is rolling out a new feature to music streaming service ‘YouTube Music’, which will allow users to create their own custom stations based on specific artists.

Users can access the new “Radio Builder” feature by navigating to the “Your music tuner” section of the YouTube Music homepage in the iOS or Android application, reports The Verge.

Users can choose up to 30 artists when creating a custom station, and can also specify whether they want to hear music just from those artists or from artists that are similar to those they have chosen.

Also, users can instruct it to play songs they know, songs they haven’t heard before, or a combination of the two while adding filters to allow users to tune the mix.

According to Google spokesperson Paul Pennington, all users can access the feature, whether they are a paying subscriber or a free user, the report said.

Last December, it was reported that the company was testing this feature.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the music streaming platform had reportedly rolled out the redesign of the “album view” for Android and iOS.

He hoped that the enhanced tourism security would help boost up the traffic of tourists in the state.

He said several reforms were introduced in the police department after YSRCP came to power and the downloading of Disha App by about 1.20 crore women indicates the extent of support being extended to womenfolk in the state by the police.

Unlike in the TDP rule, police services are now available to people through village and ward secretariats and the government has also introduced zero-FIR system in police stations where receptionists would talk to the complainants first.

Delhi HC directs DSLSA to produce roadmap for PLVs in police stations

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) to produce a roadmap for implementing its scheme to place Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs) in 50 police stations to aid people in instances involving missing children and crimes against children and how the Supreme Court’s directions will be taken forward in the matter.

A division bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Anup Jairam Bhambhani was hearing a criminal reference to streamline the functioning of the juvenile justice delivery system under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Rules framed therein.

In September of last year, the Supreme Court had also issued an order directing all State Legal Services Authorities and Legal Services Authorities of Union Territories to develop schemes as soon as possible for the appointment of PLVs in police stations to work on cases.

It had directed the circulation of the DSLSA’s scheme to be used by the states and UTs as a model for framing the schemes.

Appearing for the AAP government, advocate Nandita Rao submitted that they are looking after it actively and that they will file a reply before the next date of hearing.

The court listed the matter for the next hearing on January 31.

“What more is required is to implement the scheme in letter and spirit. Come up with a roadmap,” Justice Mridul told DSLSA Special Secretary Sushant Chngotra.

The court said that it is within the mandate of the Juvenile Justice Act and has to be done on a war footing.

Dozens injured and police stations attacked as protests continue in Peru

    [ad_1]

Dozens of Peruvians were injured when tensions flared again on Friday night as police clashed with protesters in anti-government demonstrations that are spreading across the country.

In the capital, Lima, police officers used teargas to repel demonstrators throwing glass bottles and stones, as fires burned in the streets, TV footage showed.

In the southern Puno region about 1,500 protesters attacked a police station in the town of Ilave, said the interior minister, Vicente Romero. A police station in Zepita, Puno, was also on fire, he said.

Health authorities in Ilave reported eight patients hospitalised with injuries, including broken arms and legs, eye contusions and punctured abdomens.

By late afternoon, 58 people had been injured nationwide in demonstrations, according to a report from Peru’s ombudsman.

Teargas fired at Peru protesters as thousands try to ‘take Lima’ – video report

The unrest followed a day of turmoil on Thursday, when one of Lima’s most historic buildings burned to the ground, as President Dina Boluarte vowed to get tougher on “vandals”.

The destruction of the building, a near-century-old mansion in central Lima, was described by officials as the loss of a “monumental asset”. Authorities are investigating the causes.

Romero on Friday claimed the blaze was “duly planned and arranged”.

Thousands of protesters descended on Lima this week calling for change and angered by the protests’ mounting death toll, which officially stood at 45 on Friday.

At the beginning of the Friday’s protests, the demonstrators seemed more organised than the previous day and they took over key roads in downtown Lima.

Police appeared more combative than the day before and after standing watch over protesters that had been blocked into downtown streets, they started firing volleys of teargas.

Protests have rocked Peru since Pedro Castillo was ousted as president in December after he attempted to dissolve the legislature to prevent an impeachment vote.

Boluarte has dismissed calls for her to resign and hold snap elections, instead calling for dialogue and promising to punish those involved in the unrest.

In the Cusco region, Glencore’s major Antapaccay copper mine suspended operations on Friday after protesters attacked the premises – one of the largest in the country – for the third time this month.

  • Underwater bike garage solves Amsterdam station’s storage headache

Underwater bike garage solves Amsterdam station’s storage headache

    [ad_1]

Beneath the clear waters and pleasure boats by Amsterdam central station is a remarkable feat of engineering: an underwater garage for 7,000 bicycles.

The garage, which opens on 26 January, is the result of a four-year, €60m (£53m) project to clear heaps of rusty bikes left by hasty commuters and install rows of clean, safe parking spaces underground, where bikes can be left free for 24 hours and then at a cost of €1.35 per 24 hours.

A moving walkway takes you upwards into the train station, where more than 200,000 journeys start and end every day. On the side of the IJ harbour is another new, €25m park for 4,000 more bikes, built on pilings on new land in the IJ, just inches above the North-South metro line.

The construction of the underwater bike garage, documented in an impressive stop-motion video, began in 2019 and involved draining a lake of water by the late 19th-century station – which itself was built on three human-made islands.

    — Gemeente Amsterdam (@AmsterdamNL) January 13, 2023

There are red and green lights to show if spaces are available, and from April a dynamic system will start showing commuters which bike park has room and how many spaces are free.

“Central station is one of the busiest places in Amsterdam,” said Amsterdam municipality’s bike project manager, Pieter Visser. “A lot of bikers use this precious public space to bike and park. The municipality chose to facilitate underground bike parking (in this case, underwater) to return the public space to pedestrians, tourists and people with disabilities.”

There are more bicycles in this small country than there are people – an estimated 23.4m bikes, according to the BOVAG and RAI motor organisations, compared with a population of 17.8 million. Cycling is far and away the top form of transport in cities such as Amsterdam. According to the capital’s most recent figures, 835,000 Amsterdammers between them make on average 665,000 bike trips a day, and 36% of journeys are made by bicycle (compared with 24% by car).

For the railways, the project is about making commuting easier and more attractive. “It’s great that people can jump on their bikes, get to the station and get on their journey seamlessly,” said Jeroen Wienen, a spokesperson for ProRail, the Dutch government organisation responsible for the maintenance and extension of the national railway network infrastructure.

“The Netherlands is a real cycling country, a lot of people come to the station by bike, and we and the municipality certainly don’t want all those bikes lying around. You want to offer people a decent place where they can put their bikes safely, so the streets are nice and clean for the neighbourhood.”

Cycling experts – and Amsterdammers glad that the city waterfront is no longer a building site – greeted the project with enthusiasm. Marco te Brömmelstroet, a self-styled “cycling professor” and director of the Urban Cycling Institute at Amsterdam University, said the key to its success was in linking up forms of mobility.

“It’s a lovely project, because it’s not a cycling project,” he said. “It makes visible the real (and often invisible) success factor in Dutch mobility and spacial policy: the bike-train combination. Before, there was a temporary multistorey bike rack, which immediately flowed over. It became one of Amsterdam’s most photographed objects and the municipality was embarrassed about [it].”

There are lessons for other countries in encouraging more “last-mile” cycling by providing proper facilities at train stations, said Lucas Snaije, a research and advocacy manager at the cycling advocacy foundation BYCS. “Prioritising cycling is an incredible means of making cities more inclusive, and it also promotes community, trust and wellbeing,” he said.

But te Brömmelstroet pointed out that even this €85m investment in cycling infrastructure was minimal compared with projects for the Netherlands’ 9m cars. Walther Ploos van Amstel, a professor in city logistics at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, said the most healthy, safe and vibrant cities encourage pedestrians. “I think it’s a great project,” he said, “but my advice to cities would be: don’t forget there are also people who would like to walk.”
