STF arrests suspected JMB activist from Howrah station

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police on Saturday arrested a person suspected of having close links with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen- Bangladesh (JMB) from the Howrah station in West Bengal.

The arrested person has been identified as Nannu Miyan.

“Originally a resident of Cooch Behar district, Miyan was arrested by our officers from Howrah station,” a state police official said.

    MS Education Academy

Miyan has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Miyan’s name had surfaced when the STF was investigating a case registered at the Sasan police station in North 24 Parganas district in August last year.

After cross-checking his background, it was found that his proximity to JMB started in Cooch Behar district, which borders Bangladesh.

“Since then, we have been tracking him. On Saturday, after being tipped off by our sources, the officers of STF arrested him from Howrah station. The STF is currently questioning him about his other associates,” the official said.

On April 25, the STF had arrested Nasimuddin Sheikh, a suspected Al Qaeda associate, from Hooghly district. During interrogation, he admitted that he took advantage of the Covid lockdown period to extend his network in the state.

In November last year, the STF had arrested another Al Qaeda associate, Maniruddin Khan, from South 24 Parganas district. A pen-drive was recovered from his possession which helped the STF access crucial information, including the name of Nasimuddin Sheikh.

Mob sets police station on fire protesting teen girl’s death in Bengal

    [ad_1]

Kaliaganj: Miscreants set fire to Kaliaganj police station in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Tuesday protesting the death of a teenage girl whose body was found in a canal last week.

People allegedly from the Adivasi and Rajbangshi communities organised a “Thana gherao” programme on Tuesday afternoon protesting against alleged “police inaction” in the case and claiming that the girl had been raped and murdered.

Preliminary post-mortem of the girl’s body, however, indicated she had not been raped.

    MS Education Academy

The mob broke barricades and pelted the police station with stones, an officer said.

The police personnel started a baton charge but could not stop the mob from entering the police station and setting it on fire, he said.

One vehicle was also set ablaze.

“We are trying to bring the situation under control,” the police officer told PTI.

On April 21, the body of the 17-year-old girl was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj. Alleging that she was raped and killed, locals had put up road blockades by burning tyres and set several shops on fire.

The incident triggered a war of words between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP ahead of the panchayat election in the state.

The TMC accused the saffron party of trying to “politicise and communalise” the matter, as BJP demanded a CBI probe and promised legal aid to the girl’s family.

Four police officers, all in the rank of Assistant Sub Inspectors, were Monday suspended for allegedly dragging the body of the girl on the road while removing it from the spot where it was found, amid protests by people.

A video purportedly showing the incident has gone viral.

  • Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik, who has been called by the CBI over an alleged insurance ‘scam’, and some Khap leaders held a protest at a police station here on Saturday after not being allowed to hold a meeting at a south Delhi park as they lacked requisite permission, according to officials, who rejected reports that he was detained.

Questioning the police action, Malik said he and his supporters had gone to the R K Puram Police Station to protest as he was stopped from giving food to Khap leaders at the park. According to police, they all left the police station around 2.30 pm.

Senior Haryana-based farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said the meeting was called by Malik and a group of khap leaders, but nobody was scheduled to speak at the venue. “Where is violation of rules in this?” he asked.

    MS Education Academy

The meeting was scheduled to be held at the MCD park in R K Puram and Malik was supposed to take part, a police officer said.

He said the former Jammu and Kashmir governor was informed this was not a place to hold a meeting and also that he has not taken a permission from the authorities concerned.

After that he and his supporters left the place and arrived at the R K Puram police station, the officer added.

The Delhi Police issued a statement, saying he had gone to the police station “of his own volition”, refuting reports that Malik had been detained.

“We have not detained former governor Satya Pal Malik. He came on his own choice, along with his supporters, to the R K Puram police station and we have informed him that he can leave at his own will,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said in a statement.

Speaking to the media persons before going to the police station, Malik said he wanted to give food to the Khap leaders who were at the park.

“I don’t have much space in my house, so I decided to give them food here (at the park). They (police) have orders from somewhere not to allow the gathering and let me give them the food. I told them ‘arrest me and I am coming with you’.” When asked what the police told him, he said, “(they said) will not allow.” “Why should we go to an alternative place? We will go to the police station and offer a satyagrah there…I am going to R K Puram police station and I will protest there,” he said.

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni told PTI, “I fail to understand why we were not allowed by police to hold the meeting as there was no scheduled speech of any farmer leaders there. Malik ji wanted to serve food to farmer leaders at the park. Where is violation of rules in this.” Asked whether the said meeting was scheduled in wake of the CBI asking Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir, Chaduni said, “It (meeting) was already scheduled to be held on Saturday.” Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police took to Twitter to say that reports about Malik’s detention was false.

“False information is being spread on social media handles regarding the detention of Sh. Satyapal Malik, Ex. Gov. Whereas, he himself has arrived at P.S. R K Puram along with his supporters. He has been informed that he is at liberty to leave at his own will,” it said in a tweet.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the second time in seven months that Malik, who has served as the governor of various states, will be questioned by the federal agency. Malik was questioned by the CBI sleuths in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa and finally, Meghalaya.

The CBI move comes barely a week after Malik gave an interview to “The Wire”, in which he made critical remarks about the BJP-led Centre, especially regarding its handling of Jammu and Kashmir where he served as the last governor before the erstwhile state was bifurcated into Union territories.

2 men charged with running covert Chinese ‘police station’ in Manhattan

    [ad_1]

    congressional candidate china 75052

The station identified Monday occupied an entire floor of an office building in Manhattan’s Chinatown before closing in 2022, according to prosecutors. During its operation, it was tasked with “helping locate a person of interest” to the Chinese government, prosecutors said.

The defendants were set to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said the case “reveals the Chinese government’s flagrant violation of our nation’s sovereignty.”

“Such a police station has no place here in New York City — or any American community,” Peace said in a statement Monday.

Brooklyn federal prosecutors also unsealed two other related cases Monday: one charging 34 officers of China’s national police with harassing Chinese nationals in New York and elsewhere in the U.S., and another charging eight Chinese government officials with directing an employee of a U.S. telecommunications company to remove Chinese dissidents from its platform.

Prosecutors described the 34 officers as having created a “troll farm” consisting of thousands of fake online personas on social media sites, including Twitter, to target Chinese nationals living in the U.S. who held political views in opposition to those of the People’s Republic of China or who promoted democracy in China.
